Bruce Curley
Bruce Curley, 59, of Flagstaff, AZ, died April 13, 2009 in Salt Lake City, UT.
He was born March 2, 1950 in Winslow, AZ to Reuben, Sr. and Ardith Curley. His maternal clans are Kin’yaa’aanii (Towering House) and Todich’llnii (Bitter Water), paternal clans are Ashiihi (Salt) and Haashkaan (Bananas)
Bruce enlisted in the Army on November 18, 1970, he served in Germany where he was a sharp shooter and received the National Defense Service Metal. He was honorably discharged on September 19, 1972.
He loved to go fishing every chance he got. He also loved the time he spent weight lifting with his son, Dallas. Bruce enjoyed listening to music while cooking and reading books and traveling.
Bruce is survived by his daughters Denise and Doris Curley and son Dallas Lee Curley, parents Reuben Curly, Sr. and Ardith Curly, sisters Etta, Helen and Mary Jane Curly, bothers, Reuben, Jr. Walks Alone, and George Curley, and 3 grandchildren
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 10:00 am at the Indian Bible Church, 10 West Cherry Ave, Flagstaff, AZ, interment will follow at Citizens Cemetery veterans section.
Esfrada (Effie) Santillan
Esfrada (Effie) Santillan, 76 of Flagstaff, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008 peacefully with family by her side.
Ms. Santillan was born August 3, 1931 in Salado, Arizona to Luis Romero, Jr and Tomasita Griego.
She moved to Flagstaff in 1942. She was a retired business woman who liked to spend with family. She also liked to watch baseball (she loved her Dodgers), football, and soap operas. She loved to cook, play cards with family and going to Laughlin.
Effie is survived by her three sons, Tony (Dianna); Ray, Jr.; David (Brenda), and one daughter Emma Martinez, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. One brother, Ernest Romero and one sister Ruth Romero.
She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother Eddie Romero.
Evening Vigil and Holy Rosary is Sunday April 13, 2008 at 7:00 pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel, 224 S. Kendrick, Flagstaff, AZ. Funeral Mass will be Monday, April 14, 2008 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel, interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Dianne Lynn Varga Fernicola
Dianne Lynn Varga Fernicola, age 59, passed away on August 16, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Dianne was born April 26th 1945 in New Brunswick, NJ. She was the daughter of Eugene A. and Margaret E. Widdis Varga. She grew up in Edison, NJ, graduating from Edison High School in 1963. She was employed by Edison Township for seventeen years in the Engineering Department. Dianne was very active in the Edison Young Democrats Club for many years.
She moved to Flagstaff in 1982.
Dianne was employed by the Office of Navajo and Hopi Indian Relocation in Flagstaff for twenty two years, retiring in June of 2004, due to health reasons.
Dianne’s interests included astrology, photography, travel, craft fairs and concerts. Her favorite places to visit were New York City, Las Vegas and New Orleans.
She was devoted to her family and friends and would light up a room with her smile. Her love for animals and pets was never ending.
Dianne excelled at Radio Trivia and could be heard almost daily on the Flagstaff radio stations, winning many contests.
Civic achievements included Co-chairman of the Board of Directors for the Combined Federal Campaign of N. Arizona (United Way) as well as a member of the Northern Arizona Special Emphasis Committee for the Federal Government. She was also Chairperson for Coconino County Aerobic Winter for ONHIR.
Dianne will be missed by many because she was Dianne. Through her ever present smile and optimistic outlook even at the time when she faced her greatest challenges, was an inspiration to all. She understood what life was about and what was important; family, friends and community.
Dianne is survived by her loving husband of twenty two years, Tony Fernicola, her loving daughter, Donna Golden of Flagstaff, three grandsons Nicholas and Zachary Bithell of Flagstaff and Brandon Bithell of Minnesota. She is also survived by her mother Margaret Varga and sister Jeanne Varga of New Jersey. Dianne is also survived by her devoted Schnauzer, Casper. She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Varga, who passed in 1990.

Ruth Romero
Ruth Romero died Thursday, April 16, 2009 in Flagstaff. She was born in Flagstaff, AZ on November 19, 1944 to Louis and Tomasita (Griego) Romero. Ruth was a very loving and caring person. She would welcome you with open arms and a smile with no end. She loved spending time with her family. Even though she had no children of her own, she treated her nieces and nephews, as if they were her very own. Family was very important to her and she would help out no matter what the cost. She loved to go bowling, playing games on her computer, watching Disney movies, playing cards and making tortillas. She was getting ready to retire and was so excited, but the one thing that she was going to miss was all the people that she worked with. Her family and friends are going to miss her laughter and her kindness.
She is survived by her brother Ernest Romero, Niece Emma Martinez, Nephews Tony (Dianna) Santillan, Ray Santillan, David Santillan and many other nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Effie Santillan and brother Eddie Romero.
An evening vigil and holy rosary will be on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at 7:00 pm and funeral mass will be held on Monday, April 20, 2009 at 10:00 am both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel, 224 S. Kendrick. Burial will follow service at the Calvary Cemetery, 210 W. University.
Robert Eugene Welch
Robert Eugene Welch, age 77, died Monday, November 8, 2004 in Flagstaff.
He was born September 17, 1927 in Oglesby, Illinois, a son of Richard Perry and Marguerete Mizysak Welch.
Robert married Bonnie Beth Bartlett on December 31, 1954 in San Diego, California.
He was raised in Illinois and then moved to San Diego where he married Bonnie Bartlett on December 31, 1954. They moved to Flagstaff twenty-three years ago.
Robert was a civil servant for thirty-five years. He also served in the Navy.
Robert enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved his animals and most of all life. Robert had a second degree black belt in Judo.
He is survived by his son Thomas Robert Welch, his daughter Bonnie Marie Stewart, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two brothers Perry Welch of Idaho and Jim Welch of Missouri.
Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie, three sisters and two brothers.
Karleen Mae Wirth
Karleen Mae Wirth, 72, passed away in Flagstaff, AZ on June 18, 2009 from Parkinson’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. She was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on September 22, 1936 to Julia Ann and Alex Yenny, Sr.
Karleen graduated from high school in Eau Claire and attended the University of Minnesota, becoming an x-ray technician, working at Besthesda Hospital in St. Paul. She was married to Dale Wirth from 1960 to 1973. They moved to Flagstaff in 1961, and had four children. She worked as an x-ray technician at Flagstaff Medical Center, and also transcribed medical reports for several physicians. Karleen moved to Sedona in 1979, and retired from Sedona Medical Center in 2001. Upon retiring, she moved to Rimrock, AZ, and then moved back to Flagstaff in 2008.
Karleen had a passion for baking and sewing and was an excellent seamstress. She enjoyed socializing with the Red Hat Ladies and her friends at Curves. She especially loved to go shopping at any time. Her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends and enjoyed any social gatherings with them. She loved watching her kids and grandkids play sports, and she was very proud of them all. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend and will be missed very much. She will be remembered for her kind heart, generous ways, and quick wit.
Karleen is survived by her sons, all from Flagstaff, AZ, Greg Wirth; Dan (Ronda) Wirth; Steven (Stacey) Wirth; and her daughter Karoline (John) Pinson from Litchfield Park, AZ. She is also survived by her 8 grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lois Yenny in Montana; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Karleen is preceeded in death by her mother and father, Julia Ann and Alex Yenny, Sr.; her two sisters Dorothy Shea and Elizabeth Yenny; and a brother Alex Yenny.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 22, 2009 at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 16 W. Cherry Avenue, Flagstaff, AZ. Viewing and visitation will be held prior to the services at 10:00 a.m.
Pearl Marie Fry
Pearl Marie Fry, age 99, died Sunday, November 7, 2004 at Olivia White Hospice Home in Flagstaff.
She was born February 10, 1905 in Rogers, Arkansas, a daughter of Alpheus Lee and Bernice Harriett Phelps Irvin.
Pearl married Harry Fry on October 1, 1925 in Joliet, Illinois.
She retired from the Flagstaff Unified School District where her duties were attendance secretary for the school district. Prior to that, she was a cook at Eddies’ Drive-In and manager of the Carnation Stand on Route 66.
Pearl was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for seventy years. She helped establish the Auxiliary unit in Hebron, Indiana.
She enjoyed traveling, fishing, reading, painting, crocheting, cooking and being with people.
Pearl is survived by her son Donald G. (Anita) Fry of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; her daughters Kathryn Wiltfang of Hebron, Indiana and Connie Fry of Flagstaff, Arizona; five grandchildren Carolyn Wiltfang, Mark (Bobbie) Fry, Thomas (Michele) Fry, of Hebron, IN, Nancy Piper of Flagstaff, AZ and Steven (Cheryl) Wiltfang of Portage, IN; four great grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her sister Doris (Howard) Gaston of Apache Junction, Arizona.
She is preceded in death by her husband of forty-seven years, and her brother Leland Irvin.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Flagstaff Mortuary 2545 N. 4th Street. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 in Hebron, Indiana with internment at Cornell Cemetery, Hebron, Indiana.
