Herbert Ronald ‘Herb’ Jackson
1937 - 2009
Herbert Ronald “Herb” Jackson was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma, December 30, 1937. He later moved to California and worked for Lockleed Aircraft Company in Burbank for 20-plus years, before moving to Clarkdale, Arizona in 1993, to work at the Phoenix Cement Plant, until he retired in 1996.
While working there, and being an avid fisherman, he opened up and ran Culpepper Bait and Tackle Shop in Cottonwood until 1999. He was an active member of the American Legion, the Elks Lodge, and the VFW, and was an avid bingo player at all three.
Following an extended illness, Herb passed away November 16, 2009 at his home at 1261 Mark Street, Clarkdale, Arizona. Herb is survived by three children; son, James R. Jackson who lived with him in Clarkdale, two daughters, Lisa Wada of Mission Viejo, California and Kim Jackson of Pahoa, Hawaii, as well as six grandchildren; Dayton, Christina, Chris, Sharon, Bart, and Guy Jackson, also of Pahoa, Hawaii.
Herb was a professing Christian. Although not a member of any church, he did on a couple of occasions, attend Clarkdale Baptist Church, where his son Jim is a member. He had a number of friends, including Pastor Boldin.
Herb will be greatly missed by his family, neighbors, and friends. A memorial service for Herb was held Monday, December 21 at Clarkdale Baptist Church.

LaVerta Katheryn Weatherspoon
1928 - 2009
LaVerta Katheryn Weatherspoon, 81, of Camp Verde, passed away December 11, 2009.
She was born May 7, 1928 in Luray, Missouri to the late Chester and Mildred (Williamson) Locke. LaVerta is survived by her daughters Judy M. Milam of Eugene, Oregon and Sharol R. Howell of Camp Verde; her sister, Freda S. Funk of Dacoma, Colorado; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren and six great-great-greandchildren. Visitation will be held this evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.at Bueler Camp Verde Funeral Home, 143 W. Arnold Street, Camp Verde. Funeral services will be 10:00AM Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Parkside Community Church, 401 Camp Lincoln Rd., Camp Verde. Pastor Randy Strickland will officiate the Services. Thurel R. Majors
1924 - 2009
Thurel R. Majors, 85 of Cottonwood, passed away December 16. He was born on December 14, 1924 in Yuma, Colorado to Floyd Majors and Grace Smith.
Mr. Majors attended Boulder High School. He worked with Hutchinson Homes for 27 years.
He was a master painter and loved traveling, hunting, fishing, cars and his family.
He is loved and missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Majors is preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys M. Majors and daughter Karen L. Felt. He is survived by son Larry Majors (Sandie) of Centennial, CO; sisters Lenora Strobel of Littleton, CO and Betty Majors of Englewood, CO; 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Estelle ‘Pat’ Tolliver
1923 - 2009
Estelle “Pat” Tolliver, 86, of Cottonwood died December 10. She was born December 6, 1923 in Willmington, California, the daughter of Andy and Hilda C. Waymaster.
She graduated from Banning High School. She worked in security, as a caregiver and as a retail clerk.
She was a member of the Rebekkah Lodge and was a volunteer at the Verde Valley Senior Center.
Pat will remembered as being devoted to her pets and her friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 37 years, Virgil B. Tolliver.
She leaves a brother, Andy Waymaster and sister in law Johanna of Hemet, California as well as many friends.

Margaret Jekel
1908 - 2009
Margaret Jekel, age 101 years, died peacefully on December 14 at her home in Cornville with her family around her. Margaret was born October 7, 1908, in Anderson, Missouri to W. Ed and Bertha Dunn Roark, the fifth of eleven children.
She graduated from the University of Missouri and taught high school physical education before marrying Dr. Louis G. Jekel in 1933. Margaret and Louie moved to Phoenix in 1938, where she was active in many local charities, among them Medical Auxiliary and Girl Scouts, as well as being a wife and mother.
After her husband’s death, Margaret moved in 1972 to her home in Cornville, which had been the family’s summer home since 1950.
Many family members, friends, and children’s friends have wonderful memories of their visits to Margaret at “the ranch.” She was always willing to extend her hospitality and help to anyone who wanted or needed it. She was also active in local groups such as Audubon Society, Republican Women’s Club, University Women, and Westerners hiking group.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband Louis Jekel and her daughter Judy Cienfuegos, as well as all ten of her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her son Louis Jekel, Jr. and his wife Karen of Scottsdale and Alexandria Bay, New York; daughter Ginny Barrett and her husband Chuck of Cornville; son-in-law Michael Cienfuegos of El Cajon, California; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren.
There will be a visitation on Thursday, December 15 from 5-7 p.m. at Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood; burial with a graveside service will be Friday, December 16 at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Memory, Van Buren Blvd at 27 Avenue in Phoenix.

Keith C. Kallsen
1934 - 2009
Keith C. Kallsen, 75, of Bridgeport (in Cottonwood) passed away Friday December 11. He was born in Keystone Iowa, the son of Walter and Dora ( Knoke) Kallsen.
He served his country in the U.S. Army.
He worked through Operating Engineers Local #428. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his brother Marvin and his sister Lois.
Mr. Kallsen is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kay; a son Keith W. Kallsen (Rita) of Bridgeport; a daughter Kimberly Kallsen King (George) of Chandler; a brother Homer Kallsen; sisters, Audrey Ritter, Sylvia Limley, Delores Modro, Ardath Paulson and Della Rupert; two grandchildren Fletcher King and Lily King.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 18 in the Peace Lutheran Church at 10 AM.

Anthony B. Moreno
1948 - 2009
Anthony B. Moreno, 61, known to the his family and friends as Tony Boy, died December 15, 2009 in Verde Valley Medical Center.
He was born in Jerome, AZ on March 17, 1948 to Antonio L. Moreno and Vera Brown Starr.
He grew up in Ajo, AZ., where he attended and graduated from Ajo High School Class of 1966.
On September 23, 1978, he married Lydia (Ontiveros) Moreno in St. Cecilia Mission Church, Clarkdale, AZ. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
He worked at the Phoenix Cement Plant for 13 years. After the strike he started working for the Yavapai-Apache Nation Tribal Housing as a heavy equipment operator; maintenance supervisor; and he was also the executive director for 3 years and he was currently the warehouse supervisor. He also was on the Gaming Board for three years.
He enjoyed his music, camping, BBQ’s and going for a cruise; he was happy cruising out of town.
The family will miss him dearly and he has left a big void in their hearts, but he is without pain and suffering.
Tony Boy is preceded in death by both of his parents, Antonio L. Moreno and Vera Brown Starr.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lydia Moreno of Clarkdale, AZ; his only sister Pietra Brown Moreno of Clarkdale and by his brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws. He also had a lot of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and Godchildren.
A memorial will be held on January 9, 2010 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Bill Gray Road in Cottonwood, AZ. Rosary will be at 10am, funeral mass to follow after the rosary by Father David Kelash. Burial will be at Valley View in Clarkdale, Arizona.
