Henry Parker, Jr.

Funeral Services for Henry Parker, Jr., 48, will be held at 10:00 AM (DST), Thursday, April 22, 2010 at theDilkon Church of the Nazarene, Dilkon, Arizona. Interment to follow in Indian Wells Cemetery, Indian Wells, AZ.

Henry Parker, Jr. passed away on April 19, 2010 in Phoenix, AZ. He 'was born on September 5, 1961 in Winslow, AZ. He was a very generous person always willing to donate his time.

He had a catering service, was a rancher and owner of livestock and a rug weaver. He had a traditional knowledge of his culture in ceremonies and preparation of traditional foods.

Henry is survived by his father and mother, Henry Parker, Sr. and Jennie Parker; brothers, James Parker of Las Vegas, NV, Lorenzo Parker of Phoenix, AZ and Homer Lee Parker of Phoenix, AZ.; sisters, Verna Bia of Chinle, AZ and Dorothy Parker of Dilkon, AZ.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Agnes Shorty.

Martina Wise
1916 - 2010

Martina Wise, 93, of Clarkdale, died July 6, 2010, in Cottonwood. She was born September 26, 1916, in Victoria, Kansas, the daughter of Alexandria and Rosa Schumacher.

Martina was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Louis Wise, who died in February 2000.

Martina and Louis owned and operated businesses in both produce and seafood venues in California much of their lives. They lived and worked for many years in the Redding area of Northern California. Martina also was a professional seamstress and clothing designer. In Arizona, she and Louis worked as ombudsman for the elderly at several facilities in the Verde Valley area. She most recently volunteered at the Good-Buy Shoppe thrift store in Cottonwood. Gardening and grandchildren were two of her favorite activities.

Martina is survived by her two daughters, Marta Inman and Starlett Stevens; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. “Grammie” will be lovingly missed by all of them.

A private family memorial will be held.

Anyone who knew Martina is asked to join her family in celebrating her life. If Angels truly walk among us, Martina is one.

John Frederic Ireys
1952 - 2010

John Frederic Ireys passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 18, 2010.

John was born on May 28, 1952 in Prescott, Arizona. He was raised on the Dead Horse Ranch by parents Cap and Marney Ireys.

John is pre-deceased by his parents and also his younger brother, Peter. He leaves behind many who loved him, including his brothers Chip from Alaska, Dave from California and his sister, Tere from Cottonwood.

Le Roy McArthur
1949 - 2010

Le Roy McArthur, 61, died June 20, 2010 at Verde Valley Medical Center. He was born in Stockton, California to, father Carl McArthur, and mother Margaret Martin. Le Roy worked as a warehouse forklift operator. He was a Viet Nam veteran serving in the Army. He is survived by his wife Pamela McArthur of Camp Verde, a brother Coleman McArthur, he is preceded in death by a brother Douglas McArthur, he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, He loved fishing and gardening and enjoyed working as a medical transport.

Nadean Joyce ‘Dee’ Zabel
1920 - 2010

Nadean Joyce “Dee” Zabel, 90, of Cottonwood, Arizona died Wednesday, June 9, 2010 in Sedona, AZ

She was born February 19, 1920 in Manhattan, Kansas the daughter of John Coder and Mabel Coder

She excelled in school and was a member of the National Honor Society. Following her graduation, she was employed as the secretary to the Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University, but after she married, she devoted all of her time to her husband and daughters. The family resided in Wichita, Kansas, from 1956 through 1971. There she was active in school and church activities, serving as a room mother and President of the PTA. She taught Sunday school and Bible school and was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church.

She enjoyed traveling, and the family traveled through the United States visiting National Parks and historic sites every summer. She indulged her children’s love for pets. After moving to Arizona, she continued her work in the Presbyterian Church and was instrumental in the founding of the Verde Valley Presbyterian Church in Cottonwood, which was to be her lasting church home. Her travels expanded to include the world. She always found a kind word to say and made friends wherever she went.

She was preceded in Death by her husband of 62 years, Dale Zabel; Sisters, Mynette Farmer and Marjorie Coder and a brother Robert Coder

She is survived by daughters: Marjorie Meyer ( Lynn) of Tucson and Nancy Jenson (Michael) of Chicago, Illinois; Sister, Gladys Manly (Ralph - deceased) of Lacey, Washington and grandchildren: Bjorn, Monique, Sasha, and Mekaela Meyer

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Verde Valley Presbyterian Church, 1500 E. Hombre Dr., Cottonwood, AZ 86326

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Verde Valley Presbyterian Church

Faye Carol Humphrey
1935 - 2010

Faye Carol (Bean) Humphrey passed away at the Verde Valley Medical Center on Wednesday morning June 16th in Cottonwood, Arizona. Carol was born in Jerome, Arizona on September 24, 1935 and spent many years of her life in the Verde Valley. She resided both as a child and an adult in Clarkdale and attended Mingus High School. Carol was a well loved member of the families Knowles, Bean, McCord, Reedy and Esty who resided in Jerome. Her father, Dan Bean, came to Jerome to play semi-professional baseball. He also ran the “cage” in the mine. Her mother, Faye Bean, and her sister Nancy lived in Clarkdale for many years.

After high school Carol moved to Kansas City where brother Jackie Bean operated a construction company. She had come to Kansas City to pursue a modeling career, but soon returned to the Verde Valley where she met Morris Humphrey. They married in 1955.

As a Navy wife she followed her husband as he was stationed in various parts of the world, which included several years in Japan. But her heart was always here in the Verde Valley and she returned to live in Clarkdale and later in Cottonwood.

Locals will remember Carol as a member of businesses in the Valley, particularly the Valley Bank. Carol was an active member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary for several years before becoming a member of the Elk’s Lodge #1361. She was one of the first women to be installed into the Lodge and the first lady secretary of that Lodge, serving for three years.

Carol is survived by two children, Patricia and Michael, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and nieces Holly and Heather Fair. Carol’s passing is succeeded with the remaining members of her immediate family — Gene Reedy of Grants Pass Oregon, James McCord of California and Jerry Knowles of Salida, Colorado.

A special memorial to be held in late July in Clarkdale will be announced in the near future. Friends and acquaintances may contact Patty Orphanidis at (520) 747-0681.

Helen Turner
1906 - 2010

Helen Turner, 103 of Cottonwood, died June 4 in Sedona. She was born July 25, 1906 in the Oklahoma Territory, the daughter of Arthur Dewey Loomis and Eva Loomis.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed teaching china painting. She loved all arts and crafts. A member of Mountain View United Methodist Church, she loved her church activities. She was a bright shining light to many people. She was a good listener to many and always remained happy and positive.

Her husband, Charles Turner preceded her in death.

Mrs. Turner is survived by her daughter Betty McClure (Bruce) of Cottonwood; two grandchildren Kevin McClure and Lucinda Taylor; two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held July 13, 2010 in the Mountain View United Methodist Church at 10 AM with Pastor Michael Anderson will officiate.

Lois Beatrice Chapman
1912 - 2010

Lois Beatrice Chapman died July 1, 2010 at the age of 98 with her loving caretakers from Gracious Granny’s Assisted Living in attendance.

Lois was born April 10, 1912 in Oklahoma the second of six children of Homer Lee McDaniel and Mattie Arlena McDaniel. When Lois was a child the family relocated to New Mexico where her dad homesteaded.

In 1940 as a young woman Lois moved to Flagstaff where she lived and worked for the next 25 years. During that time she married Happy Chapman. Together they owned and operated Chapman’s Market in East Flagstaff.

Retirement came in the early 1960’s with a move to Cornville, AZ where they resided for many years. Their next move was to Cottonwood Village and Lois’ final year was spent at Gracious Granny’s Assisted Living.

Lois was always active and outgoing. She and Happy spent many years involved in square dancing all around the state. Lois sewed matching clothing for them to dance in including her beautiful full squaw skirts. She also used her creative talents to play the organ and make wonderful wood carvings of animals and birds.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of more than 50 years, Happy; an infant daughter, Beatrice; her only sister and two brothers.

Lois is survived by her brothers Snooke McDaniel of Carrizozo, NM, H.D. McDaniel of Titusville, FL; step children Jane Marks (Norm) of Cottonwood and Jim Chapman (Carol) of Palisade, CO. She is also survived by numerous step grandchildren and nieces and nephews including nieces Nancy (George) Cronin of Belen, NM and Karen Hopkins of Cottonwood, AZ.

There will be a celebration of life at Gracious Granny’s Assisted Living, 1420 Bates Road, Cottonwood, AZ on Friday, July 23, 2010 at 4 p.m.
