Agatha Munson
Agatha B. Munson, 89, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000 in Prescott.
She was born on July 30, 1911 in Elkton, Mo., to Ethmer C. and Mabel Ora (Vannoy) Fisher.
Mrs. Munson lived for many years in the Ojai, Calif., area, and moved to Chino Valley in 1984. While in Ojai she owned a restaurant, "The Mighty Bite, " and a bar, "The Elbow Room."
She collected Indian jewelry and artifacts and loved the desert and Native American culture. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid outdoors woman. She was preceded in death by her husband Victor.
Survivors include her guardian Harry Cumming of Easthampton, Mass.
There was a private cremation at Bradshaw Crematory in Prescott Valley and burial was in the Nordhoff Cemetery in Ojai, Calif.
Francis McBurnie
Francis McBurnie, 63, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000 at his home in Chino Valley.
He was born on Feb. 20, 1936 in Bethlehem, Pa., to Hugh and Hope (Hickman) McBurnie.
Mr. McBurnie worked as an auto mechanic for nine years with the Prescott Unified School District and was retired medically.
He moved to Prescott from San Diego, Calif., in 1977, and later moved to Chino Valley.
Mr. McBurnie enjoyed the outdoors, going camping and fishing. He had a passion for tinkering with cars and in his spare time he would draw. Francis loved to visit with friends over coffee, he was proud of his drawings and sketches as with all of his collected artwork.
Survivors include his sons, Robert and Howard, both of Prescott; sisters, Faith Savage and Agness Shalfant, both of Pennsylvania; and Caroline Mousetes of Ohio.
A private cremation was held at Bradshaw Crematory in Prescott.
Lennie Koepcke
Lennie Darnell Koepcke, 41, died on Feb. 22, 2000 in Prescott, Arizona. She was born on July 10, 1958 in Heidelburg, Germany to Andrew and Karen (Wells) Butcher.
Lennie was very active in the A.I.D.S. Foundation.
She is survived by her husband Pastor Kevin Kyle Koepcke of Chino Valley, daughter Rhonda O'Hara Setterlund of Washington, son; Thomas A. Setterlund of Chino Valley, parents Andrew and Karen Butcher of Alabama, sisters; Donna Pruitt, Connie Butcher of West Virginia.
Memorial services were held on Feb. 27, at Universal Life Ministries. Memorial contributions can be sent to Universal Life Ministries, 944 N. Hwy 89, #12, Chino Valley, Arizona, 86323.
James Powell
James L. Powell, Sr., 79, died on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000.
He was born on Dec. 7, 1920 in Prairieview, N.M., to Oscar and Lily Mae (Hite) Powell.
Mr. Powell married Charlene B. Burch on Dec. 26, 1944, and she died in 1995.
Mr. Powell served for three years in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a tail gunner, and was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Silver Star. James and Charlene moved to Phoenix in 1953 from Albuquerque.
He worked for 27 years as a maintenance supervisor at Garrett Air Research.
After his retirement in 1981, Mr. Powell moved to Chino Valley. He became known as "Grandpa" to the whole town of Chino Valley. He was a charter member of the Chino Valley United Methodist Church. There he was a member of the Emmaus community, served in the liturgies and worked on the building committee. He was the architectural draftsman who drew the plans for the new church building.
Many other buildings in Chino Valley were also of his design. Mr. Powell was also involved in the Mounted Sheriff's Posse and the Garrett Corp. Retiree's Club.
He enjoyed team roping and really loved his horses. His part-time occupations included everything from construction to horse-trailer repair. He never said, "I can't help you" to anyone. He was always ready to help those who asked.
Survivors include his daughter, Bettye Williams of Laveen, Ariz.; son, Larry Powell of Chino Valley; brothers, Marvin of Lovinton, N.M., Weston of Denver City, Texas, Norman of Hobbs, N.M.; sisters, Rosie Lawson of Big Springs, Texas, Lawanda Ellis of Hobbs, N.M.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were on March 1 at the Chino Valley United Methodist Church. A private cremation was at Bradshaw Crematory in Prescott Valley.
John Walker
John Duane Walker, 67, died on Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000 at a local care center in Prescott. He was born on March 12, 1932 in Belle Fourche, S.D., to Newman D. and Zeta (Smith) Walker.
Mr. Walker had been a resident of Arizona for the past 54 years and of the Prescott area for the past 21 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a carpenter and enjoyed gardening, fishing and sports but most of, he enjoyed his family. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his wife Onita Walker of Chino Valley; daughters, Karen Ann of Gilbert, Ariz. And Kathryn Crew of Chino Valley; step-sister, Shirley Miller of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services were on March 4 at the Mountain View Cemetery with Dr. B. Edwin McDonald officiating.
Keith Jones
C. Keith Jones, 80, died on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000 at the Las Fuentes Care Center in Prescott. He was born on May 5, 1919 to Clarence Ray and Luella (Schaum) Jones, in Buffalo, N.Y. Prior to relocating to Arizona from West Virginia with his family in 1959, Mr. Jones was employed as a journeyman machinist in the Developmental Engineering Department of the Westinghouse Corporation in Pennsylvania and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Upon settling in Prescott, Mr. Jones was active with the First Baptist Church, Boys Club and enjoyed many years as a real estate agent for Pauley and McDonald Realtors and as owner-broker of A.R.C., Realty & Insurance.
Survivors include his sons, Neal and Noel both of Prescott; brothers, Zane Jones of Everett, Wash., long time companion, Susan Collins of Chino Valle; and four grandsons. There were no funeral services. Burial was at Mountain View Cemetery in Prescott.
Kenneth Hansen
Kenneth Nielsen Hansen, 75, died on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000 in Camp Verde.
He was born on Sept. 27, 1924 in Tempe. After graduating high school in Tempe, Mr. Hansen served his country during World War II in the Army-Air Force as a radio operator in a B-29 bomber. He married Betty Jean Stansberry on May 2, 1945 in Lincoln, Neb. After the war, the Hansens moved back to their native Arizona and had five children: Sterling, Barbara, Vyvyan, Denny and Tina.
Mr. Hansen was an original member of the Cowboys Turtle Association, which became the RCA and is now the PRCA. He rodeoed on the circuit for 19 years from New York to California, working all seven events, specializing in saddle bronc, bareback bronc and bull riding. At one point in his career, Mr. Hansen was ranked 6th in the work in bareback and 8th in the world in bull-riding event.
The Hansens moved to Chino Valley in 1956 where Mr. Hansen worked on ranches and farmed his own ground. Mr. Hansen served with the Yavapai County Sheriff's office for 19 years. When he was forced to retire after being injured in the line of duty, he was the department's chief investigator. He was a charter member of the Arizona County Attorney's and Sheriff's Association. In 1990 the Hansens realized their life-long dream when they purchased and operated their own ranch, The Pipeline Ranch, located in the southwest corner of Yavapai County.
Survivors include a sister, Eleanor Hunter of the Tempe area; daughters, Barbara Guest, Vyvyan Valentine and Tina Shelton; son, Denny Hansen; 14 grand children and numerous great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Chino Valley Cemetery. The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
Raul Corrales
Raul Corrales, 69, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000 in Chino Valley.
He was born on Dec. 21, 1930 in Tierras Nuevas, Chihuahua, Mexico to Joaquin and Francisca (Carrasco) Corrales. Mr. Corrales started to be a cowboy at 8 years of age.
Mr. Corrales came to the United States in 1942. He married Cinderella Lara in 1954, and they moved to California in 1957. There he took night classes to learn English and to earn his U.S. citizenship. He learned upholstery, and then welding, construction and carpentry.
Mr. Corrales' wife died in 1986. He married Susan Ulry Largent in 1988.
In 1998 Mr. Corrales bought his ranch in Chino Valley and moved here, building his own house in only eight months.
Mr. Corracles was a true outdoorsman and loved to go horseback riding and packing, camping, hunting, and fishing. He was also a great dancer.
His smile was as big as the outdoors, and he was a friend to everyone whom he knew.
Survivors include his wife Susan of Chino Valley; sons, Raymond and Ruben of Sylmar, Calif.; daughter Marina Corrales of LaGrande, Ore.; sisters, Micaela Corrales of Juarez, Mexico, Irene Cordova of Bernalillo, NM, Alisia Corrales of Midland, Texas; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were on Feb.16 at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church in Chino Valley. A private cremation followed at Bradshaw Cremator in Prescott Valley.
Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family.
