Betty L. Spear

Betty L. Spear, 65, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at Yavapai Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 11, 1932, in San Diego, Calif., to Edwin and Betty Hollenbeck.

Mrs. Spear married Gerald Spear on March 6, 1969, in Yuma. They moved to Prescott Valley eight years ago from Escondido, Calif., where she worked as a waitress for many years before retiring in 1990.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald; sons, Bill Kenyon of Valley Center, Calif., and Lonnie of Lakewood, Wash.; daughters, Nelcha Price of San Diego, Calif., Mary Anderson of San Marcos, Calif., Lois Cords of Saratoga, N.Y., and Becky Spear of Tacoma, Wash.; brothers, Glenn of San Marcos, Calif., and Ken of Holtville, Calif.; sister, Aline Powers of Prescott Valley; and 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sunrise Funeral Home in Prescott Valley with the Rev. James Cunningham officiating.

John Papa

John Dewayne Papa, 48, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at his home in Prescott.

He was born Aug. 28, 1949, in Hayward, Calif., to Joseph and Nola M. Papa.

He moved to Prescott this year from Phoenix where he lived since 1986. Prior to that, Mr. Papa lived in Nevada. He was in the manufacturing industry for many years.

He attended Prescott Community Church and was active in Promise Keepers, as well as the New Horizons.

Survivors include son, Dylan of Prescott; friend, Suzette Poellot of Prescott; mother, Nola of Taylorsville, Utah; and sister, Barbara of Taylorsville, Utah.

Memorial contributions may be made to a trust fund for Dylan Papa at Norwest Bank in Prescott.

Memorial services will be 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Prescott Community Church, 3151 Willow Creek Road, Prescott, with Pastor Bob Myers officiating.

Patricia Ann Mahoney

Patricia Ann Mahoney, 77, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at her home in Prescott Valley.

She was born Feb. 9, 1920, in Chicago, Ill., to Bart and Pauline (Frankowski) Ahern.

Mrs. Mahoney moved to Prescott Valley in 1990 from Phoenix where she lived since 1952, moving there from Chicago.

She was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Phoenix.

Mrs. Mahoney was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Mahoney, Sr., in 1985 and son, John J. Mahoney, Jr., in 1995.

Survivors include daughters, Pat Watson of Dewey, and Judy Malumphy of Eureka, Calif.; brothers, Jack Ahern of Egg Harbor, Wis., and Bart Ahern of Tucson; sisters, Jewel Lane of Chicago, Ill., and Ann Daniel of Yuma; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 8 a.m. at St. Germaine Catholic Church in Prescott Valley, with the Rev. Gerald Yaeger officiating. Burial will be private at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix at a later date.

Ruth C. Akerly

Ruth C. Akerly, 98, died Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, in Prescott.

She was born Feb. 22, 1899, in Chicopee, Mass., to Alfred and Grace (Dow) Chapin.

She married Byron Partridge in 1919 and they moved to Prescott, where she resided continuously until her death. She was preceded in death by Mr. Partridge in 1954.

Mrs. Akerly then married Fred Akerly, who has also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Akerly worked for the state of Arizona Welfare Department as a secretary for 10 years before retiring. She was also a lifelong member of the Order of Eastern Star in Prescott.

Survivors include daughter, Ruth Ann Kizer of Prescott; two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

Mike Malyjurek

Mike Malyjurek, 78, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Phoenix.

He was born June 30, 1919, in Allison, N.M., to Mike Malyjurek Sr. and Annie Toneck.

Mr. Malyjurek had worked for the Iron King Mine in Humboldt as a purchasing agent. He also worked for Cyprus Bagdad for one year. He retired from the Arizona Department of Transportation.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of the Arizona Bushmasters, Company D, 137th Infantry Battalion, during World War II.

Mr. Malyjurek came to Prescott at an early age. He attended schools here and graduated from Prescott High School in 1938. He attended Sacred Heart Church, was a former member of the BPOE #330 of Prescott, the American Legion Post #78 in Humboldt, and the Bushmasters organization. Following his retirement, he enjoyed ceramics, gardening, sports, and reading.

He married Mildred Applebaum on July 12, 1945, in Little Rock, Ark.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred "Midge" of Humboldt; daughter, Sue Aycock of Chandler; son, Gary of Lake Forest, Calif.; sisters, Rose Boyer of Prescott, Karen Siritt of Lakewood, Calif., and Margaret Longmore of Lancaster, Calif.; brother, Bill of Lakewood, Calif.; and four grandsons.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church, 150 Fleury Ave. A reception will follow in the forum at the church.

The family suggests memorials to The Center, Adult Day Care Services, Inc., 826 Sunset Ave., Prescott, AZ 86301, or the American Diabetes Association, Research Division, 9034 N. 23rd Ave., Suite 8, Phoenix, AZ 85021.

Paul Cooke

Paul D. Cooke, 80, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997, at Yavapai Regional Medical Center.

He was born March 18, 1917, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Harry and Laura (Lohr) Cooke. He married Winifred Lynch on Sept. 25, 1943, in Pittsburgh.

Mr. Cooke served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a supervisor for the Neward Enterprises in California, before retiring in 1985. He moved to Dewey four years ago from Ontario, Calif.

Survivors include his wife, Winnie of Dewey; son, Daniel of California; daughter, Diane Nichols of Prescott; sisters, Edith Protine of California and Marcia Drummonds of Ohio; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Alicia Castro

Alicia Castro, 89, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997, at a local nursing home.

She was born Jan. 11, 1908, in Havana, Cuba. She moved to Prescott two years ago from Florida.

Survivors include her daughter, Maria A. Suarez of Prescott Valley; sisters, Rosa Villamil and Margot Aeullo, both of Florida; and one grandson.

Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Reorganized Church 0f Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2970 Willow Creek Road, with Elder Mark Mottet officiating.
