Robert James Stoll
The Music Man, Robert James Stoll, age 82, of 416 A. Pleasant View Road, Plymouth, Wisconsin, passed away on Sunday, October 31st, 2010, at his home. He was born on Christmas Eve, 1927 in Bay View, Wisconsin, ahead of his twin brother, Richard. He attended grade school and high school in Cudahy, WI and it was during this time he began his life-long relationship with the piano and music. Following high school, he worked as a commercial artist in Milwaukee until he was inducted into the Army in 1946, where he was stationed in Germany. After serving his country, he continued his education at UW-Milwaukee, earning his Bachelor of Science degree. Later, he would earn his Master of Music degree from UW-Madison.
It was in a music class at UW-Milwaukee that Bob met a young singer, Alice Petzold, whom he would marry in 1951. The piano player and the singer would make music together for nearly 60 years and create a family of seven children. He led his family with a sense of humor, a dedication to their well-being as witnessed by the long hours and multiple jobs he was willing to work for them, and was always ready with an open ear to listen to their problems and provide his measured wisdom.
Bob created music throughout his career as a choral director in elementary schools in Stephenson, MI and Fond du Lac, WI, as well as in the Wisconsin high schools at Rhinelander and Plymouth. His choirs were known for their excellence, earning many state competition honors. He was the innovative driving force behind many successful high school musicals, cabarets, and swing choirs, giving so many of his students a chance to shine on the big stage. In all his work, he strove for two things – perfection and his favorite adjective, "pizzazz". He typically achieved both. His music-making extended beyond schools and into the communities at large where he lived. His choral directing included stints with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (where he infamously entered the stage one night by sliding on a rope from the balcony, suffering rope burns on his hands), Lakeland College Summer Camp, the Rhinelander Male Chorus, Barbershop groups in Plymouth, and church choirs in Plymouth (St. John the Baptist), Three Lakes, WI (St. Theresa), and Sun City West, AZ (Prince of Peace, Our Lady of Lourdes, and the Sun City Congregational Church).
Bob enjoyed many hobbies, including photography (which led to many family night slide shows), biking (he owned four bicycles – at the same time), flying (earned his private pilot's license, achieving a life-long dream), fishing (known for countless hours and casts off the end of his pier at Medicine Lake), and walking (consistently made the 2-mile walk from home to Plymouth High School and back regardless of the weather). In retirement, Bob and Alice spent time in both Sun City West, AZ (he claimed he was "solar-powered", thus the choice of Arizona) and at their lake cottage in Three Lakes.
Survived by his wife, Alice Mae (Petzold) Stoll and their seven children of Plymouth, as well as his twin brother, Richard (Mary Ann) Stoll.
Special Thanks: Celebrate Choir members and The Breakfast Boys.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Bob's name to further a Plymouth High School choral department student's musical education or donations can be made for a memorial fund to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth, WI.
A memorial mass will be held at a future date at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City West, AZ. The Suchon Funeral Home and Cremation services is serving the family.
