Betty Lee Spitler
Betty Lee Spitler, nee Bennett, died Nov. 28 at the age of 91. Betty had a long history in Glendale, beginning with her grandfather, Archie Bennett, the first mayor of Glendale. She met her husband Clarence, at Glendale High School and they were married for 67 years. Betty worked in accounting for the City of Glendale, was a member of the Glendale Historical Society, enjoyed sewing, ceramics, cooking and needlework. But her first love was her family and she was a much loved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence. She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Ted) Christy and Vicki Resch, grandchildren, Scott Menke, Kim Menke, Jennifer (Gabe) Castle, Paul (Sarah) Resch and Courtney (Curtis) Pulley, and great-grandchildren Tatum, Chase and Gabriel Castle and Emily, Samantha and Alex Pulley. Services will be Sat., Dec. 6 at Menke Funeral Home, 12420 N. 103rd Ave, Sun City; visitation at 10 with services at 11. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley or your favorite charity.
Elizabeth Joyce Boyd
Elizabeth Joyce Boyd, 76, of Peoria, Arizona passed away November 20, 2014. Elizabeth was born in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to Arizona in 1977. She was preceded in death by her husband Ronald in 2012. Survivors include her son Gary and grandson Ryan Boyd. Private family arrangements have been made.
Robert McGuire Walters
Our beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away at Banner-Boswell Hospital on Oct. 30, 2014. He was 91.
Bob, a WW II veteran served under Patton and fought in The Battle of the Bulge. He married Betty Schomaker in 1948 and worked as an executive for ConTel Corp. in Minnesota for 30 yrs. Betty preceded Bob in death in March 1993.
Robert was an active member in the Sun City community. He was the President of the Optimist Club, the Tennessee Club and served for 10 yrs. as Chairman of the Board for the Bos/Web Condo Assoc. As a 30 yr volunteer at Boswell Hospital, Bob was often the first to greet patients and visitors upon their arrival. He was also a long time member of the Shepard of the Desert Lutheran Church in Sun City.
Robert is survived by his wife of 20 yrs, Barbara. Daughters Gail Starck and spouse Charles, Deborah Jennings, Son-in-law Mike Jennings and spouse Trish, Granddaughters Shannon Lopez and spouse Geo, Michelle Augustine, Grandsons Rob Jennings and spouse Hillery, Todd Jennings and spouse Shelly, Great Grandchildren Tatum and Maguire Jennings. Stepdaughter Leslie Jordan.
A private ceremony for the family will be at a later date.
Patsy Lynn “Treguboff” Boorn
Patsy Lynn “Treguboff” Boorn, 81, of Surprise, AZ passed away Nov. 6, 2014. Patsy was born in Mt. Vernon, AR to Buck and Madge Shelton. She moved to Glendale, AZ in 1942 and was a Valley National Bank retiree. Pasty was preceded in death by her first husband Leo J. “Rusty” Treguboff in 1987 and her second husband Billie B. Boorn in 2011. She is survived by her children John G. Treguboff (Diana) and Cyndee Overson (Rocky); step-children Tim Boorn, Tracy Boorn, Tonni McCartney, Terri Foster and their families; sisters Sharon Eldridge, Donna Stewart, Jeri McLouth and Sammie Rudd; grandchildren Wendy Quinonez, Lisa Stookey, Jacob, Timothy & Matthew Treguboff, 4 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and her dearest cousin Peggy. Private services will be held.
Patricia Gayle Jacobs Blackburn
Patricia Gayle Jacobs Blackburn (Gayle) passed away November 25, 2014. Gayle was born April 6, 1956 in Phoenix, AZ to Richard P. and Dora (Hutchison) Jacobs. She grew up in the West Valley where her parents were dairy farmers. She graduated from Glendale High School. Gayle was the former Co-owner of J&B Meat Company. Gayle married her high school sweetheart Gary and raised her 3 children in Glendale. Anyone who knew Gayle knows the rest of the story. She is survived by the loves of her life, Jason, Jodi and Justin, her sisters Georgia and Cindy, and her grandchildren Tatum, Tori and Jayden. A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday December 6, 2014 at the Avondale Moose Lodge 1572 S. Cotton Lane. Contributions may be made in Gayle’s name at Gofundme.com.
Mary Niece Brooks
Mary Niece Brooks of Sun City, Arizona passed away November 08, 2014 at the Cook Health Care facility in Youngtown where she had resided for the past two years since suffering a stroke. She was overcome by deteriorating health due to that stroke.
Born in a small town in Wisconsin on June 30, 1924 to Martin and Luna (Wells) Oudenhoven, she lived and worked in Waukesha, Wisconsin. After World War II, she married her first husband, Leslie Edward (Felix) Niece and the years following moved to Arvada, Colorado. Her career highlight was being the executive secretary to the Chief of Police in Arvada, Colorado, retiring after 19 years of work.
After the death of her first husband, she remarried and with her second husband, Albert Oscar Brooks, they spent much of their time between Littleton, CO and Zapata, TX. Upon his death, she spent her remaining widowed years in Sun City enjoying the companionship of Bennett Erickson, with who she loved to go dancing, fishing, trailer camping and sitting on the back porch.
Mary will be greatly missed and is survived by her brother, Martin Samuel Oudenhoven; sister, Luna Moretti Fish. Also her children Bonnie (Niece) Oakley of Albuquerque, NM, Marty Niece of Bellevue, WA, Randy Niece of Haymarket, VA, Linda (Knepp) Niece, deceased and Kenneth Niece, deceased, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Per her final instructions, there will be no funeral or memorial service. She will be cremated and her remains laid to rest in the Prairie Home Cemetery in Waukesha, Wisconsin near her mother and father.
James Robert (Bob) Wilson, 87
Sun City West resident, Bob Wilson, died Saturday evening November 15, 2014 shortly before 6:00 pm.
He is survived by Merri, his wife of 62 years; Craig Wilson, a son; Becky Jincks, a daughter; and Robin Clark, a daughter. A daughter-in-law, Lisa Wilson; two son-in-laws, Ken Jincks and Bob Clark.
He was known as Pap Pap to seven grandchildren, James Rueck, Jason Rueck, Bonnie Forssell, Bud Clark, Jenny Guzman, Amy Schasteen and Seth Krause and twelve great grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Bill Wilson of Palm Desert, CA; Tom Wilson of East Liverpool, OH; Gary Wilson, of Minneapolis, MN; and one sister, Connie MacElravy of Warren, OH.
Bob was born in East Palestine, Ohio and attended nearby Wellsville High School as part of the Class of ’46 when the family moved there to a larger home. He played on the school Football, Baseball and Basketball teams and is a WWII veteran having served in the US Army Air Corps on the South Pacific island of Okinawa. He was a member of American Legion Post 94.
A long time member of the Sun City West First Baptist Church, serving there as an usher. He also did volunteer work with SCW Prides and The Food Bank in Surprise. He enjoyed playing cards, domino’s and table games with friends and grandchildren. Also, he was well known for his adept Bocce skills with the SCW Recreation Center teams.
His last years were happily and comfortably spent at home while living with Alzheimer’s Syndrome and under the care of his wife, Merri. Death came quickly and easily to him when an Abdominal Aortic Aneurism ruptured in his chest and he quietly fell into his eternal rest.
Memorial services will be held at SCW First Baptist Church, 17419 N. Conquistador Drive, Sun City West on December 8, 2014, 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SCW First Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
Patricia Ann “Pat” McKinney
Patricia Ann McKinney was born in Kanasas City, Missouri on June 28, 1935 to Harold and Eugenia Chalmers. She was preceded in death by her husband Burless “Ken” McKinney and brother, Robert Chalmers.
At an early age, Patricia and her brother moved to her mother’s family home near Warm Springs, Georgia. Growing up a Georgia girl on a dairy farm in the area, she lined up with early classmates to greet FDR, was crowned May Queen and graduated from Manchester High, and commuted via weekend train rides to her first big job at an Atlanta bank.
In the early 1970’s, Patricia moved with husband and son to Arizona and started the Western half of her life. Working most of her life, she took great pride in her work and time spent in banking, legal, insurance and government administration. Her favorite Arizona job and friendships were derived from many years spent with the Arizona Department of Education.
Patricia shall be so greatly missed and is survived by her sister, Nancy Nelson of Roswell, Georgia; son John McKinney (Holly) and 2 grandchildren.
Visitation will be Noon-1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2014 at Menke Funeral Home followed by graveside services at 2:00 p.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, Arizona.
