Robert Joseph Cornell
Robert "Bob" Joseph Cornell, 70, passed away Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at his home in Dolan Springs. He was born July 10, 1940, in Walla Walla, Wash.
Bob is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lori; mom, Barbara; sister, Fay; three children, Randy, Pat and April; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
After serving eight years in the United States Army Reserves, Bob went on to become a transmission specialist. His last place of employment was Kermit's Transmission in Kingman where he worked on just about every car in the Kingman area.
For the last 16 years, Bob and his wife Lori have resided in Dolan Springs where the two of them personally built their retirement home.
Bob loved working on his property with Lori and enjoyed taking her out to eat at the local VFW. They rang in many New Year's at the VFW where they would visit with friends and dance the night away.
Although he was considered a quiet man, Bob had the biggest heart and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, at the VFW in Dolan Springs.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Bob's name to the local VFW or DAV chapters.
Clara Louise Essig Smith
Clara Louise Essig Smith was born Nov. 28, 1921, in Lebanon, Ore., to Robert, a World War I veteran, and Mae Andrews Essig.
She lived in Oregon with her parents and grandparents on a farm outside of town until she was 9 months old. Her parents then relocated to Kingman, where her father worked as a truck driver for a mining supplies company and her mother worked for Mohave County Hospital. Her father later worked for the Kingman Post Office.
Clara attended elementary school in Kingman at the "little red schoolhouse." During her eighth-grade year, she contracted scarlet fever and attended school for only several months but still managed to graduate at the top of her class. She then attended high school at Mohave Union High School, graduating in 1939 as valedictorian. She continued her education at Arizona State University, Tempe, graduating as valedictorian in 1943 with a Masters in English.
Her first teaching assignment was in Ajo. She taught there for a year and then returned to Kingman, teaching English at the high school. Her brother, Robert, was one of her students. She also coached the girl's basketball team.
Clara and Albert H. Smith were good friends through their school years in Kingman and kept in contact during the war. He proposed by telegram returning from Marine Corps duty in the Pacific during WWII. They were married Dec. 30, 1945, and relocated to Brawley, Calif., in 1946. Mrs. Smith began teaching in the Brawley Elementary School system in 1961. She was a kindergarten teacher and taught at Witter, Phil Swing and Oakley. She retired in 1996. Clara was an avid gardener with two green thumbs. She also loved playing bridge with her friends. She was an accomplished piano player and loved all kinds of music.
Clara and Albert have four children, Kathleen, Teri (Roger) Smelser, Byron (Joanne) and Richard (Pattie), three grandchildren, Derek (Kari) and Matthew (Lisa) Smelser and Melissa Smith, and three great-grandchildren, Paige, Anson and Rhett Smelser.
Clara was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2007. She passed away on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010.
Clara is survived by her husband, Albert H. Smith; her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, June Walker of Phoenix; nephews, Dennis Walker and family of Phoenix, and John Essig and family of Peoria, Georgina, Joline Morgan and family, Norma Barros and family.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4, at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley, with internment at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Mountain View Cemetery in Kingman.
Francis Anthony "Frank" Smith, Jr.
Francis Anthony "Frank" Smith, Jr., age 84, of Scottsdale, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010. Frank was the eldest of identical twins born Feb. 15, 1926, in Boston to Francis A. Smith and Catherine Cullen Smith, both deceased. Twin Gerald J. Smith of Bel Air, Md., survives.
The twins enlisted in the U.S. Navy early in 1942. Frank served on USS Ramsden and LST 759 as a Radar man in the World War II Anti-Submarine Campaign of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, later was assigned to the Amphibious Forces for the Battles of the South Pacific, ending with Okinawa, April 1, 1945. Frank was honorably discharged in October 1945. He chronicled his war experiences in a self-published memoir titled, "The Happy Hooligan."
Frank was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, the girl next door, Lorraine R. Brodeur, the first daughter of Leo and Simone Gingras Brodeur of Boston. Frank and Lorraine followed the call of the West, relocating to Kingman in July 1949. Frank was elected American Legion commander of the Kingman Post 14 and stayed on as an unpaid volunteer adjutant for 12 years, transferred his membership to the Scottsdale Sipe-Peterson Legion Post and was a 63-year member. He was a Life Member of the Kingman Elks and a Life Member of the Phoenix Chapter 1 of the Disabled American Veterans. During his 20-year residence in Kingman, he was advancement chairman for Boy Scouts of America, Mohave County District. He was a 3rd Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Council as well as the secretary and financial secretary of the Council. He was elected to four terms on the Mohave County Democratic Central Committee.
Frank retired after 35 years of service in the U.S. Postal Service, first working the Kingman City Delivery Service, then as the first city carrier. He transferred to the U.S. Postal RPO Railway Mail Service on the Santa Fe Railroad, on the main line from Los Angeles to Chicago. At the discontinuation of Railway Mail Service, Frank and his family transferred to the Phoenix U.S. Postal System. He retired as the USPS training department senior scheme examiner July 1, 1988.
Frank loved his family, music, dancing, working with tools and technology, was an avid ASU football fan, and was proud of his Irish Catholic heritage and his service to his country. Frank was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Scottsdale.
Frank is preceded in death by a sister, Anne Panarello. In addition to brother Gerald (Janet) Smith, he is survived by a sister, Barbara (Ernie) Ludwig; his three daughters, Patricia (Patrick) Smith, Elizabeth (Bernard) Doerning and Catherine (C. Thomas) Ethington; grandchildren, Daniel (Nancy) and Andrew (Leslie) Smith; Luke, Robert and Carolyn Doerning; Laura and David Ethington; three grandchildren, Kaylee and Kloe Smith, and Timothy Smith; many nieces, nephews, extended family, and his faithful buddy these past two years, Duncan, the gentleman's beagle.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Road in Scottsdale. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 7655 E. Main St. in Scottsdale. A reception will follow the Mass at church.
Following the reception, a committal service will take place at 1 p.m. at The National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road in Phoenix.

Andrew 'Andy' Lee Szabo
After enduring many years of pain, our beloved son, brother, cousin, nephew and friend went into the loving arms of God on Monday, Aug. 23, 2010.
Andy was born on Sept. 27, 1979, in Kingman; graduated high school in Laughlin, Nev., and lived the remainder of his life in Bullhead City.
Andy enjoyed engaging in conversations with people and touched many lives with his care and concern. Andy loved the simple things in life, like taking a walk, watching a sunset, and he definitely loved thunder and lightning. He was an avid reader and also loved to "chase storms" with his cousin, Del.
Andy was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Retha Osborn, and his uncle, Bill Osborn; both resided in Kingman.
He is survived by his mother, Bonnie J. Wood, and brother, Steven Szabo of Bullhead City; his father, Dean A. Szabo and step-mom, Janet A. Szabo of Bonney Lake, Wash.; paternal grandmother, Ethel Ellico of Kingman; his aunt, Betty M. Peterson, and cousin, Del Peterson of Kingman; three uncles, John Szabo of Hesperia, Calif., and Jeff Ellico and Brad Ellico of Kingman; and many other friends and his church family of the Potter's House.
A "Celebration of Andy's Life" service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at The Potter's House in Bullhead City.
A private memorial by family and close family friends will be held at an undetermined time at Mountain View Cemetery in Kingman.

James Baker
James Baker, 81, of Golden Valley passed away Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, in Golden Valley. He was born Oct. 14, 1928, in Louisville, Ky. He moved to Mohave County 33 years ago from California.
James was the owner/operator of Valley Inn Bar in Golden Valley. He served in the U.S. Army.
James is survived by his wife, Mary J. Baker of Golden Valley; his niece, Lana Kushner of Phoenix; and his nephew, Bill R. Baker of Golden Valley.
Betty L. Ross
Betty Lanice (Smith) Ross, 71, passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2010, at 12:07 a.m., after a bout with lung cancer. She passed away at home on the Turkey Creek Farm in Stockton, Mo., with her loved ones at her bedside. Betty was born May 3, 1939, in DeKalb, Texas. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend to all who knew her, and she will truly be missed. She leaves behind many wonderful memories of the places we went and the reunions we shared with her.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Eston "Sunny" Ross; a son, Eston "Skip" Ross; and two daughters, Mary Sherwood and Alisa Ross; three sisters, Frances Tilton, Charlene Steed, both of Kingman, and Paula Ashley of Gulfport, Miss.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ruben Navarette Alvarez
Ruben Navarette Alvarez, 84, of Kingman died Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, in Kingman. He was born Oct. 9, 1925, in Valle De Guadalupe, Mexico.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with the Rosary at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Sycamore Ave. The service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at Mountain View Cemetery, 1301 Stockton Hill Road.
James Siokos
James Siokos, 72, of Kingman died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, in Kingman. He was born July 18, 1938, in Chicago. Sutton Memorial Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Paul D. Srout
Paul D. Srout, 58, of Golden Valley passed away Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, in Kingman. He was born Jan. 18, 1952, in Old Fields, W.Va., and came to Golden Valley 21 years ago from Yuma.
Paul obtained an associate degree in Criminal Justice and served as a deputy sheriff in Yuma County and Imperial County in California. He also worked for the Department of Defense as SWAT captain, Drug Enforcement. He served in the United States Marine Corps, was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and worked at the Golden Valley Food Bank for 19 years.
Paul is survived by his wife, Mildred Srout of Golden Valley; and three sons, Robert Turk of Yuma, Richard Turk of Windsor, N.Y., and David W. Srout of Florence, Ariz. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26, at Golden Valley Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to M. Srout, c/o Golden Valley Baptist Church, 100 S. Higley Road, Golden Valley, AZ 86413.
Lillian Ellen Johnson
Lillian Ellen Johnson, 97, of Kingman died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, in Kingman. She was born June 28, 1913, in Huron Lake, Minn.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 302 E. Spring St.

Helen Mary Ball and Willard Harold Ball
Helen Mary Ball, 70, of Golden Valley was born Jan. 2, 1949, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and passed away Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, in her home in Golden Valley.
Willard Harold Ball, 71, of Golden Valley was born July 11, 1939, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, and passed away Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, following Helen, in their home in Golden Valley.
Willard and Helen married March 21, 1963, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. They moved to La Puente, Calif., in 1963, then in 1997 moved to Golden Valley to retire.
Mom and Dad leave five kids, Cathy Bryant of California, Kim Ball of Nevada (deceased), Kevin Ball of Arizona, Tony Ball of California and Jackie Wroten of Arizona; 11 grandkids, and eight great-grandkids.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Sycamore Ave.
Myrtle Aline Tidwell
Our beloved mother left to be with the Lord and our Dad on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010. She was born in Texas on May 9, 1918.
She came to Arizona in 1941 where she lived in Buckeye until Dad died, and she moved to Golden Valley to be close to us. She was 92 years old.
She was Mom to all, and we will miss her so very, very much. We love you Mama, Nana, friend and Granny.
She leaves two sons, Gene Tidwell and wife Marlene, and Bill Tidwell and wife Janie; three daughters, Betty Keith and husband Bill, Marie Wade and Bill (deceased), and Peggy Capps and Woody (deceased).
She is also survived by lots and lots of grandkids, great-grandkids and great-great-grandkids.
She was preceded in death by her son, Larry, in 1950. We will miss you so terribly much. We love you, Mama.
Memorial services will be held later in Buckeye.
Kay Leone Marcum
Kay Leone Marcum, 76, of Golden Valley died Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, in Kingman. She was born Dec. 27, 1933, in Santa Monica, Calif.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m., and the service will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Golden Valley Assembly of God, 3355 N. Magma Road. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery, 1301 Stockton Hill Road.

John Henry Odam
John Henry Odam, born Dec. 4, 1932, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010. John was husband, Dad, Granddad to all. He was loved by all. This world will truly miss him.
He was a retired ironworker from Local 433 Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
John is survived by his wife, Elma Odam; sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters. They will all truly miss him.
