Barbara Barley
Barbara Barley passed away on February 15, 2001 at Y.R.M.C. in Yuma, Arizona. She was 57 years old. She was born on April 4, 1943 in Somerton, Arizona. Barbara, a member of the Mormon Church, worked as residential aide at the Shire Home in Somerton, Arizona, was a cook at the Clarlen Home and a day-care assistant at the Cocopah Day-care.
Barbara is survived by her daughters Veronica Mack, Brenda and Donelle Mills all of Somerton, AZ, Victoria Hernandez of Tucson, AZ and Miranda Mills of Yuma, AZ; sons Russell and Cyril Mills of Winterhaven, CA and Pete and Marlan Rose of Somerton, AZ; sister-in-law Angelina Barley of Blackwater, AZ; 26 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 1 niece; and 3 nephews.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Miles and Rosalie Barley; sister Colleen Mack; and brother McGee "Mac" Barley.
Funeral Services will be held at the West Cocopah Indian Reservation on February 21, 2001 at 5 PM, with a cremation held on February 22, 2001 at 6 AM. Pallbearers include Cyril, Dushane, Gilbert and Anthony Mills and Marlow Jose III. Honorary Pallbearers include Robin, Joseph and Derrick Mack, Willard Golding Jr. and Lymon Golding
Douglas "Doug" W. Lowe
Douglas W. Lowe, age 57, died suddenly in Tucson on Friday, February 16, 2001. For the past several years, Doug was engaged in volunteer charitable work. Prior to that he was the City Administrator of Yuma from January 1984 to January 1994. He served as City Manager of Watertown, New York in 1983 and was Borough Manager of Carlisle, Pennsylvania from 1975 to 1983. He worked in city management in Roseville, Minnesota from 1972 to 1974.
Doug earned his Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Denver in 1972 and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from George Washington University in 1967. He graduated from Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Terry, of Yuma; his son, Andy Lowe, of Tucson and daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Paul Lowe Hlavacek, of Tucson. He is also survived by his father, Arthur Lowe, Jr., of Tucson; his brothers and their wives, Art Lowe III and Ann of Columbus, Ohio and Roger Lowe and Kay of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; his parents-in-law, Ed and Faith Gray, of Yuma and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
The funeral mass will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 24, at St. John Neumann Catholic Community, 11750 South Mesa Drive in the Foothills. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a memorial fund for Doug at St. John Neumann.
Jean L. R. Carlson
Jean L. R. Carlson, 80, of Yuma, AZ, died Sunday, February 11, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She is survived by her Sons, Edward F. York III and his wife LeeAnna, of Wendover, NV; Robert York and his wife Donna, of Sierra Vista, AZ; Daughters, Frances Couture and her husband Alvin, of Rapid City; Jana Carlson and her friend Peggy, of Valley Springs; Faye Carlson Gravitt and her husband Bob, of Boise, ID; one Brother, Ben Blumenthal and his wife Marjorie, of Naples, FL; 10 Grandchildren; and 17 Great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are being held Wednesday, February 14, 2001.
Burial will be held at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.

Ervin F. Gall, Sr.
Ervin F. Gall Sr., age 77, of Wonder Lake, IL, passed away February 19, 2001 in Woodstock, IL.
Mr. Gall retired from the Chicago Fire Department in 1980 after 31 years of service. Following retirement, he spent winters in Yuma.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Wilma; a son, Ervin Gall Jr. and two granddaughters, Kristina and Breana, all of Wonder Lake. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael and four brothers.
The visitation and funeral service is Wednesday, February 21, 2001 at Junsten's Wonder Lake Funeral Home, 7611 W. Hancock Drive, Wonder Lake, IL 60097.
Inurnment will be in St. John Cemetery, Johnsburg, IL.

L. B. Loyd
L. B. Loyd passed away on February 18, 2001 in Yuma, Arizona. He was 71 years old. He was born on November 10, 1929 in Walters, Oklahoma.
L. B. is survived by his wife Ruby Loyd; son Joe Loyd; daughters Pat Baughtman and Elaine Loyd, all of Yuma, AZ; 4 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and 2 brothers.
Visitation will be held at Johnson Mortuary on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 from 5PM - 8 PM. Graveside Services will be held at Desert Lawn Memorial Park on Thursday, February 22, 2001 at 10AM. Chaplain Wayne Whittaker will officiate.
Anna Mae McCarty
Anna Mae McCarty, 89, passed away in Yuma on February 19, 2001 at Life Care Center. She was born July 19, 1911 in Weatherford, TX. She was employed by J.M. McDonald Department Store. She was a member of Eastern Star for 50 years and a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors are her daughter, Juanita M. White; grandson, Bruce (Sandy) Levens; two great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clyde W. McCarty.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, February 22, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Rick Seltzer will officiate. Desert Lawn Memorial Park will be her final resting place.

Grace Madeline Rath
Grace Madeline Rath was born on April 18, 1918 in Montana and lived in Tacna. She passed away February 19, 2001 at Yuma Nursing Center.
Survivors include many friends and her late husband's family.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2001 at 2:00 PM at the Salvation Army Chapel, 475 W. 13th Street.

C. LUND DIES AT 81
A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 28, 1996 for Clarence S. "Clunk" Lund, one of Fountain Hills' most active early-day volunteers.
The retired advertising executive almost single-handedly initiated the community's first tourism promotions during years of volunteer service with the Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Lund, 81, died at Life Care Center of Scottsdale Friday, May 24, after a long illness. He was born in Eau Claire, Wisc., and was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin.
After college, he went to work for the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency, which was the largest in the world for many years. He worked his way up to senior vice president and was one of the executives in charge of the multi-million dollar Kraft Foods account.
After retirement, he and wife Helen moved Winetka, Ill.,to Fountain Hills, building one of the first homes on Glenbrook Boulevard.
He soon became active with the newly-formed Chamber of Commerce and chaired the Advertising and Tourism Committee from 1976 to 1980. He also served on the Chamber's board of directors in 1978.
Some of the projects he is credited with are:
Getting Fountain Hills listed on state highway markers on Shea Boulevard, McDowell Road and the Beeline Highway.
First Fountain Hills tourism brochure.
First Fountain Hills billboard.
Served on the first Fountain Festival of Arts & Crafts Committee.
Served on the first Economic Development Committee and developed advertising that brought in numerous inquiries from the Wall Street Journal.
Served on the planning committee for 8's Great Sunday, which evolved into the Fountain Hills Great Fair.
Chaired the Civic Association's Community beautification committee which bought trash cans that were placed throughout the business district and awarded homeowners for outstanding landscaping.
Served on the community's first incorporation committee.
Mr. Lund was also a charter member of The Club, a private men's organization. He served as president one year.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Judy Kaff of Scottsdale; Barbara Wickershan of St. Louis, Mo.; Mary Corrigan of Scottsdale; and Martha Vanderwerf of Scottsdale; ll grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
Interment was at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.
Esther Barragan
Esther Barragan, 67, of Phoenix died May 7, 2001. She was born in Ajo on May 2, 1934. She was graduated from Ajo High School and later attended beauty school in Phoenix. She is survived by her husband, Jose Esparza, by her sons, and by many other family members. Services were held on Thursday, May 10, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Phoenix.
Marcus Sylvester Childs
Marcus Sylvester Childs, 62, died May 12, 2002, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was born on May 16, 1939, to Amelia (Marquez) and John Childs. He lived in Ajo until moving to Los Angeles. He married Gloria Flores on September 10, 1995, in Las Vegas. He was a musician and a truck driver. He is survived by his wife, sons, stepchildren, and many other family members. Services were held in Douglass Funeral Home; burial was in Childs Cemetery at Ten Mile Ranch.
Marion Isobel Morton
Marion Isobel Morton, 76, died May 12, 2002, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She was born November 21, 1925, in Verdun, Quebec, Canada, to Mary Ann (Reed) and Norman Bean. A resident of Cayley, Alberta, Canada, she and her husband John bought a winter home in Ajo in 1991. She is survived by her husband, daughters, and many other family members. Funeral services were held in Canada.
Gordon T. Alley
Gordon T. Alley, 63, died in a Tucson hospice on November 27, 2001. He was born in Ajo to G.T. "Tom" and Frances Alley and was graduated from Ajo High School. He earned his law degree from the Uni-versity of Arizona and practiced in Tucson. In 1990 he was appointed to the Superior Court bench in Pima County and became presiding judge in 1999. He is survived by his son, daughters, and other family members. A memorial service was held on November 30 at St. Phillips in the Hills in Tucson.
James L. Cordy
James L. Cordy, 68, died in Ajo on November 27, 2001. He was born September 18, 1933, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Daisy (Waite) and Raymond Cordy. He came to Ajo as a youth. A banker, he worked for a federal bank in Oklahoma City before retiring. He returned to Ajo in 1989 where he was an active member of the Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Cordy, his mother, Daisy Ross, and by his children and other family members. Memorial services were held in Ajo Calvary Baptist Church on December 1. Burial was in the Ajo Cemetery.
Pauline Marie Lehman
Pauline Marie Lehman, 78, of Mesa, died Tuesday, December 12, 2000, in Mesa. Mrs. Lehman lived in Ajo for many years while her husband, the Rev. Olin F. Lehman, was pastor of the Ajo Federated Church. She was preceded in death by her husband on June 21, 2000. Mrs. Lehman is survived by her children and other family members. Memorial services were held Saturday, December 16, at the First United Methodist Church in Gilbert.
Andrew M. Montijo
Andrew M. Montijo, 72, died December 21, 2000, in Mesa. He was born February 4, 1928, in Ajo, the son of Felisardo & Marcela Montijo. A lifelong resident, he was graduated from Ajo High School and was a blasting foreman for Phelps Dodge before he retired. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hill Montijo. He is survived by his children and other family members. Services were conducted by the Rev. Rob Johnston in Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 30. Burial was in the Ajo Cemetery.
Francisco Ortiz
Francisco Ortiz, 77, died December 11, 2000, in Indio, California. He was born December 4, 1923, in Ajo, the son of Aniceto & Francisca Trejo Ortiz. He grew up in Ajo and lived here until his retirement from Phelps Dodge in 1983 after thirty years of service. He then made his home in Coachella, California. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosina Rendon Ortiz. He is survived by his children and many other family members. Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Soledad Catholic Church on Friday, December 15. Burial was in the Coachella Valley Cemetery.
Candelaria N. "Connie" Avalos
Candelaria N. "Connie" Avalos, 85, died January 3, 2001, in Tucson. She was born February 2, 1915, in Guanajuato, Gto., Mexico, the daughter of Jose & Vicenta (Ramirez) Negrete. She and Meliton R. Avalos were married February 8, 1933, in Prescott. In 1950 they moved to Ajo from Cottonwood. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Meliton R. Avalos, who died May 15, 1993. She is survived by her children and many other family members. Mass was celebrated by Father Fernando Manzo in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Tuesday morning, January 9. Burial was in the Ajo Cemetery next to her husband.
Melody Yazzie McMillin
Melody Yazzie McMillin, 47, died in a New Years Eve car accident in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was a Tucson lawyer who devoted much of her career to Native American issues and had recently made an unsuccessful bid for the Pima Community College Governing Board, losing by a tiny margin. During her campaign she made many friends in Ajo. She is survived by her husband of four years, Dave McMillin, and by the children in their blended family. Memorial services have been held in Tucson.
Adam R. Mitchell
Adam R. Mitchell, 86, died January 1, 2001, in Phoenix. He was born February 28, 1914, in Belford, North Dakota, the son of Joseph & Christina (Shook) Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell came to Ajo from Washington in 1950, and lived here until moving to the Arizona Pioneers Home in Prescott in 2000. Before retiring, he worked for Phelps Dodge in the ore dressing division of the mill. Mass was celebrated Saturday morning, January 6, by Father Richard Rego in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial was in Ajo Cemetery.
Theodore W. "Ted" Ozanne
Theodore W. "Ted" Ozanne died December 25, 2000, in Phoenix. He was born October 29, 1918, in Ajo, leaving as a youth. After World War II, he and his wife, moved to Ajo and opened a gift shop called The Copper Shingle in the Plaza. They left in 1947. At the time of his death he made his home in Phoenix. Mr. Ozanne was preceded in death by his wife in August 2000. He is survived by children and other family members.
Abe Parra Gray
Abe Parra Gray, 68, of Sonoyta, Sonora, Mexico, died in St. Mary's Hospice in Tucson on January 12, 2001. He was born September 18, 1932, in Sonoyta, Sonora, Mexico, to Bartola (Parra) and Abraham Cope Gray. A rancher, he owned his own ranch, Los Vidrios. He had worked at Paloma Ranch for many years. He also worked at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in the late 1950s. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Briones Gray of Sonoyta, Sonora, Mexico, and by many other family members.
Virginia R. Moody
Virginia R. Moody, 79, died in Tucson on January 9, 2001. She was born May 5, 1921, in Brooklyn, New York, to William & Frieda (Haase) Reiman. She married Roland G. Moody in New York on October 16, 1944, and they moved to Ajo from New York City in 1955. During her working career in Ajo, Mrs. Moody worked in the Phelps Dodge Mercantile office, was a bartender at the Brass Knob, and a cashier at Circle K. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland G. Moody, who died July 17, 2000. She is survived by her daughters and many other family members. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 19, at Douglass Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Stacy officiating.

Petra Soila Nogales, 82, died in Sunbridge Estrella Care Center in Avondale on Wednesday, January 10, 2001. She was born in Ajo on June 29, 1918, to Agueda Parra Reina. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pedro Nogales. She is survived by her daughters and many other family members. Mass was celebrated by Father Richard Rego in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Saturday morning, January 13. Burial was in the Ajo Cemetery.
Gary Michael "Mike" Williams
Gary Michael "Mike" Williams, 56, died in Phoenix on Wednesday, January 10, 2001. He was born in Ajo on July 22, 1944, to Ethel (Rosenberger) and Kenneth Grady Williams. He attended school here and was graduated from Ajo High School, later attending a year of college. He and Jeanette Runge were married on March 12, 1981. Mr. Williams was an mechanic. He taught auto shop at Ajo High School from 1981 to 1984. He was head mechanic for Bob Alford Chevrolet. On February 5, 1985, he and his wife opened Mike's 5th Street Garage. He was a volunteer firefighter for many years. Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Jeanette Williams of Ajo and by his daughters and other family members. Mr. Williams was given a fire department funeral at noon on Saturday, January 13, in the Ajo Cemetery.
Wilfred Patricio
Wilfred Patricio, 66, died January 17, 2001, in Sells Hospital. He was born on August 24, 1934, in Sells. He came to Ajo in 1952 from Tucson and worked for Phelps Dodge for 31 years 9 months before retiring as a pipe fitter foreman in 1983. Before moving to Sells he enjoyed roping at Doyle's arena. He loved working with horses until the time of his death. He is survived by his children and many other family members. Burial was on Tuesday, January 23, at San Miguel Village.
Jennie Campos
Jennie Campos, 83, died Saturday, January 27, 2001, in her home in Ajo. She was born July 5, 1917, in Guanajuto, Mexico, to Jesus & Antonia (Esquivel) Luna. She married Farnk Campos in 1934 and they moved to Ajo from Jerome in 1950. A homemaker, she loved to work in her garden and yard and to walk. She was preceded in death by her husband and by a daughter, a son, and a grandson. She is survived by many other family members. Funeral mass was celebrated by Father Rego in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 31. Burial was next to her husband in Ajo Cemetery.
Bruce Gerald Kostling
Bruce Gerald Kostling died October 12, 2000, at his home in Ajo. He was born May 7, 1944, in Marysville, California. He served for thirty years in the US Navy as a marine diesel engineer. After he retired, he lived for a time in Mexico before moving to Why and then Ajo. He is survived by his children. Military funeral arrangments were made by Desert Rose Mortuary.
Felix "O'oje" Miranda Sr.
Felix "O'oje" Miranda Sr., 62, of San Lucy, died January 22, 2001, in Phoenix. he was born in Ajo on March 2, 1938, to Manuel & Josephine (Orosco) Miranda. He lived in Ajo for 32 years before he moved to San Lucy near Gila Bend in 1970. He worked for Viikam Doag Industries. He is survived by his wife, Lucyanna (Lopez) Mranda, and by his children and many other family members. Mass was celebrated in Saint Lucy Church near Gila Bend. Burial was at Darby Well Cemetery.
Virginia Stevens
Virginia Stevens, 80, died January 27, 2001, in El Dorado Hospital in Tucson. She was born April 25, 1920, in Lancaster, Wiconsin, to Anna Laura (Trowbridge) and Harley Allen Fay. She moved to Glendale from Redmond, Oregon, in 1982, and came to Ajo a year later. She operated a personal charity she called Angel Wing for many years and was known to those she helped as Mother Angel. She helped animals as well as people and frequently sheltered homeless cats. She is survived by her sons and other family members. Private services were planned.
Jefferson D. Jordan
Jefferson D. Jordan, 89, died February 1, 2001, in Tucson after a short illness. He was a native of New Mexico and a long time resident of Arizona. Mr. Jordan was employed a an official of Phelps Dodge Corporation for many years before his retirement. He is survived by a sister, Mary Lou Smith of Santa Barbara, California, and by one grandson and several nieces and nephews. No services are planned.
Blanche Payne
Blanche Payne, 95, died January 25, 2001, at her home in Callahan Village, Roseburg, Oregon. She was born November 27, 1905, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to George & Gertrude Kent. The family moved to Keyes, Oklahoma, where she met and married Johnson VanDyke Payne when she was sixteen. The couple first moved to Ajo in 1923 and made Ajo their permanent home in 1937. They moved to Tenmile, Oregon, in 1962. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.V. Payne. She is survived by her sister, Faye Stewart of Ajo, and by many other family members. Services were held on Thursday, February 1, in Oregon. She is buried next to her husband in the Tenmile cemetery.
Gregorio N. Cruz
Gregorio N. Cruz, 80, died May 1, 2001, in Phoenix. He was born in Ajo on March 15, 1921, to Josefa (Nevarez) & Jose Cruz, and was a lifelong resident. Goyo, as he was known to his many friends, worked at the local lumberyard for 57 years, seeing the business name change many times from the days it was known as the O'Malley Cole Lumberyard to its present incarnation as Ajo True Value. He was its manager for many years. He loved to tinker with electrical appliances. Many houses in the Gibson area had their plumbing and wiring installed by him. He is survived by his wife, Adelaida Cruz of Ajo; by his son and daughters, and by many other family members. Rosary was recited Friday evening, May 4, in Immaculate Conception parish hall. Mass was celebrated by Father Muņoz on Saturday morning, May 5, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Graveside services in Ajo Cemetery were led by Fr. Muņoz with military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
William C. Reid
William C. Reid, 85, of Black Canyon City, died April 23, 2001, in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Phoenix. He was born October 13, 1915, in Sierra Blanco, Texas, to Otis & Eulah (Price) Reid. He came to Arizona when he was four years old and lived in Parker before moving to Harquahala Valley where he lived from 1931 to 1935. He came to Ajo in 1941 and worked for Phelps Dodge in the mill before moving to Phoenix in 1943. He joined the Army in 1943 and served in Germany during World War II. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he lived in Phoenix and had a sand & gravel pit at the Salt River and Washington Street. He drove a truck delivering sand, gravel, and dirt to people in Phoenix. Mr. Reid was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella, who died October 27, 1998. He is survived by his daughter, and many other familoy members. He was buried with full military honors on May 1 in the National Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Cave Creek Road in Phoenix.
Donald Tapp
Donald Tapp, 64, died May 1, 2001, in Tucson. He was born June 11, 1936, in Kenton, Ohio, to Maribel (Crook) & Louis Tapp. He served in the Army and Air Force for eleven years. He worked as a construction carpenter for many years. He is survived by his mother, Maribel Tapp of Ohio, by his sons and daughters, and by many other family members. Graveside services in the Ajo Cemetery were led by the Rev. Ken Kermode with military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
Esgardo M. Lopez
Esgardo M. Lopez, known to his friends as Tojo, died April 13, 2001, in Goodyear. He was 76. He was born in Ajo on December 19, 1924, to Carlota (Martinez) and Alfredo Lopez. He grew up here and was graduated from Ajo High School before attending the University of Arizona for two years. In 1965 he married Guadalupe Carmelo in Ajo. He worked for Phelps Dodge Corporation and was working as a carpenter when he retired from the company. Mr. Lopez is survived by his wife, Lupe Lopez of Ajo; by his sons & daughter, his grandchildren, his great-grandchild, and many other family members. Rosary was recited Wednesday evening, April 18, in Douglass Funeral Home. Mass was celebrated by Father Richard Rego in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Thursday morning, April 19. Burial was in the Ajo Cemetery.
Clyde D. Peed
Clyde D. Peed, 73, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, in the Tucson Medical Center hospice. He was born May 29, 1927, in Grandfield, Oklahoma, to Edna (Warrant) and Clyde D. Peed Sr. He came to Ajo from San Diego in 1950. After his high school graduation he attended Baylor College in Texas for a year. On July 3, 1953, he married Martha Quiroz in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. A boilermaker, he was retired from Phelps Dodge Corporation. He is survived by his wife, Martha Peed of Ajo; by his son & daughter, by his grand children and great-grandchildren, and many other family members. Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in Douglass Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated by Father Richard Rego in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 26. Burial will be in the Ajo Cemetery.
Bertha Perez
Bertha Perez, 78, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. She was born in Ajo on December 8, 1922, the daughter of Cruz (Gonzales) & Tranquilino Rojo, and was a lifelong resident here. She was preceded in death by her husband, Severiano Perez, who died September 8, 1983. Mrs. Perez is survived by her sons and daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and many other family members. Rosary will be recited in Douglass Funeral Home at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 27. Mass will be celebrated by Father Richard Rego in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. Burial will be in the Ajo Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Julio Perez, Gregorio Perez, Felix Perez, Abel Rios, Jose Vega, and Manuel Martinez.
Charlie Davis
Charlie Davis, 74, died on Thursday, April 12, 2001, at his home in Ajo. He was born in Indiana on August 11, 1926, to Minnie (Humphrey) & Charles Davis Sr. He came to Ajo in 1940. In 1954, he married Ann Pudlas in Fort Ord, California. He worked for Phelps Dodge Corporation for 30 years and was a shovel operator when he retired. He also ran an exterminating business he started in the 1970s, Charlie Davis Pest Control. He is survived by his wife, Ann Davis of Ajo, by his son, and by many other family members. Mass was celebrated by Father John O'Rourke in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Tuesday morning, April 17. Burial was in the family plot in Ajo Cemetery.
Mary Jo "Jody" Walker
Mary Jo "Jody" Walker, 70, died in the early morning on Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in Tucson. She was born in North Little Rock, Arkansas, on July 27, 1930, the daughter of Joe and Ruby Hefner. She came to Ajo as a child in 1942. Soon after her graduation from Ajo High School in 1948 she married E.S. "Bud" Walker. She is survived by her husband and her sons, and by many other family members. Services were held at Adair Funeral Home, Avalon Chapel, in Tucson on Saturday, April 14. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Ajo Foundation, 641 W. Soaring Hawk, Oro Valley, Arizona 85737.
Jesse F. Clemmer
Jesse F. Clemmer, 88, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at the Prescott VA Medical Center. He was born in Hamilton, Texas, on December 27, 1912, to Emma E. (Sewell) & John B. Clemmer. He served in the Army during World War II and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the VFW. Mr. Clemmer came to Ajo in 1937. He worked for Phelps Dodge Corporation here and was a tailings pump operator at the time of his retirement. Mr. Clemmer moved to the Pioneers Home in Prescott but came back to his home here every year to visit with family and friends. He is survived by his brother, C. W. Clemmer of Sierra Vista; by several other family members. Services were held Monday, April 9, in Ajo Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Mitch Vader and pastor Odell Henderson officiating.
Troy Whitfield Leatherwood
Troy Whitfield Leatherwood, 80, died April 4, 2001, at La Colina Nursing Home in Tucson. He was born December 2, 1920, in Boswell, Oklahoma, to Sarah (Richardson) & Jackson L. Leatherwood. He came to Ajo from Comada, New Mexico, in 1941. On February 4, 1942, he and Thelma S. Branch were married here. During World War II he served in the US Marine Corps. He worked for Phelps Dodge Corporation for 35 years, 8 months, retiring as a locomotive engineer on May 26, 1976. He also built eight houses and also worked on the Ajo Assembly of God Church. Dozens of homes have additions he built and roofs he put up. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Thelma S. Leatherwood of Ajo, by his sons, and by many other family members. Memorial services were led by the Rev. Gary Stacy in Douglass Funeral Home on Monday afternoon, April 9.
Roy Stanley Shelly
Roy Stanley Shelly, 74, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, in Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Phoenix. He was born in Ajo on January 31, 1927, to Josie (Maddox) & Ellis D. Shelly. He grew up here and was graduated from Ajo High School. He also completed a year of college. During World War II, he served in the Army. Mr. Shelly held many jobs during his lifetime, including law enforcement. He worked for Ajo Improvement Company and Phelps Dodge Corporation as a plumber and pipe fitter, retiring in the early 1980s. He was active in the community. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Catherine Shelly of Ajo, by his children, and by many other family members. Services were led by the Rev. Roger Smith in Ajo Federated Church on Friday morning, April 6. Burial was in the Ajo Cemetery.
Robert Alba "Bob" Allen
Robert Alba "Bob" Allen, 70 died February 4, 2001, in Chandler Regional Hospital. He was born July 2, 1930 in Phoenix to A. A. "Jimmy" & Hazel King Allen. He lived in Ajo from age four until retiring from Phelps Dodge as a journeyman electrician in 1979 at age 49 when he moved to Page with his family. There he worked for Salt River Project at the Navajo Generating Station until retiring in 1984. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Geneeta L. Allen, and by many other family members. Services will be Wednesday February 7, at 1 p.m. at the Meldrum Mortuary, 52 N. Macdonald St. in Mesa.
Mark F. Alley
Mark F. Alley, 51, died January 29, 2001, at his home in Ajo. He was born January 7, 1950, in Phoenix to Peggy L. (Fisher) and Perry C. Alley. He grew up here and was graduated from Ajo High School. He lived in Arizona most of his life. He owned a men's clothing store in Flagstaff. He is survived by his parents, his children, and many other family members Private services have been held.
Reynaldo Hernandez
Reynaldo Hernandez, 81, of Prescott Valley, died January 6, 2001, in the VA Medical Center. He was born November 6, 1919, in Mayer, the son of Francisco & Maria Hernandez. Mr. Hernandez worked as a truck driver for Phelps Dodge before retiring in May 1977. Mr. Hernandez was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hernandez, and a daughter. He is survived by his duathers and many other family members. Celebration of Life was on Thursday, January 11, at Sacred Heart Church, led by Father Joe. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery with a miltary honor guard.
Norma R. McKay
Norma R. McKay, 64, died February 4, 2001, in Thunderbird Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. She was born December 29, 1936, in Ajo to Helen (Trujillo) & Manuel Rendon. A lifetime resident, she was graduated from Ajo High School. She was employed by Ajo Unified School District 15. She is survived by her husband, James P. McKay of Ajo; by her mother, Helen T. Rendon of Ajo; by her son and daughter, and many other family members. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, at Douglass Funeral Home. Funeral services will be led by the Rev. Robert Johnston in Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 9.
