Armando P. Banco
Peter Banco, 76, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at home after a two-year battle with lung cancer.
Peter was born in New Jersey and lived in various locations before settling in Fountain Hills with his loving wife of 21 years, Christine.
In addition to Christine, Peter is survived by a sister, Amilia Honey; three sons, Dino, Anthony and Loren; a daughter, Renee Daniels; two stepsons, Jeff and Robert Knudsen; a granddaughter, Maya Daniels; and step-grandchildren, Eric, John, Demitrie and Jon.
Peter served in the U.S. Navy and will be laid to rest with Military Honors at the National Memorial cemetery of Arizona on Tuesday, March 26. He will be dearly missed.

Lillian L. Harwood
Lillian Lorraine Harwood of Wauwatosa, Wis. (nee Sattler) entered eternal life on Saturday, March 16, 2013.
Lil was born Sept. 22, 1928 in Wauwatosa, Wis. to Jacob and Rose Sattler. She graduated from Wauwatosa High School and St. Xavier University School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital in Chicago, the Milwaukee Veterans Administration Medical Center and 23 years at the Home for Aged Lutherans in Wauwatosa.
She married James Richard Harwood on Aug. 25, 1951 in Milwaukee.
Lil was active in social and volunteer activities in Wauwatosa and Fountain Hills. She and Jim enjoyed bridge, curling, golf and traveling.
Friendships were important to Lily and she had many friends, including Kindergarten pals, Group pals, St. Pius X pals, Friday coffee pals, Brandy bunch pals, Desert Teresian pals, Fountain Hills pals, Girl Scout Troop pals, St. Vincent de Paul pals, and many others.
Lillian is survived by her seven children: Beth (Stephen Raymonds) of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; Jane (Bob Petrosik) of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; Timothy of Milwaukee; Thomas (Linda) of Scottsdale; Peggy Heuler of Elm Grove, Wis.; Daniel (Vibeke) of Barrington, Ill.; and Nancy Nedland (Jon) of Libertyville, Ill.; 19 grandchildren, Adam Raymonds (Sonia), Lindsey Harwood (fiancé Graham Thieren), Laura Raymonds, Maryann Harwood (fiancé Richard Neward), Charles Petrosik, James Raymonds, Robert Petrosik (Brittany), Timothy Harwood, Michael Raymonds, Jamie Heuler, Sally Harwood, Madeline Harwood, Lily Nedland, Joey Nedland, Kennedy Harwood, Sophie Harwood, Derek Nedland, Emily Harwood, Isabella (Ivy) Raymonds; and by her sister, Margy Van Beckum; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Lil was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; parents, Jacob and Rose Sattler; sisters, Rose Mary Pluckhahn and Pauline Ruskusky.
A visitation and memorial mass were held at the San Camillo Chapel, Wauwatosa, Wis. on Thursday March 21, 2013, presider Bishop Don Hying.
In lieu of flowers memorials have been established in her name with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the San Camillus Foundation.

Robert Johnson
Robert W. Johnson, May 4, 1924 to March 20, 2013, passed away peacefully at his Fountain Hills home surrounded by family.
A proud first-generation American and lifelong Minnesotan at heart, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Betty Bremer Johnson; his parents, Axel and Evelyn Johnson; and his in-laws, Edward and Emily Bremer.
He is survived by adoring children and their spouses, Beth (Jack) Hult, Susan (Stu) Kantor, Leigh Johnson and Ken Kradle, Edward (Britt) Johnson, David (Mary) Johnson and Rick (Mary) Johnson and 13 loving grandchildren.
Bob attended the University of Minnesota on a Naval ROTC scholarship and graduated from the U of M School of Business Administration and the U of M Law School.
He proudly defended his country as a “Tin Can Sailor” on the USS Walker in the Pacific theater.
Bob started his professional career as a certified public accountant and tax counsel at Minneapolis Honeywell Regular Company. He left Honeywell for private law partnerships. Eventually, he started his own firm, Robert W. Johnson, PA.
He was also a lobbyist for Minnesota’s Independent Telephone Companies, the Hotel/Motel/Hospitality Group, and sanitation workers.
From 1963 to 1975, Bob represented St. Paul’s Highland neighborhood in the Minnesota House of Representatives. In 1978, he ran for Governor of Minnesota as an Independent Republican.
Thirty-five years ago, when Fountain Hills was hardly a city, Bob built Minnesota Flats on a hill overlooking the Fountain. He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Fountain Hills. He also loved The Farm, near Pelican Rapids, Minn., where he raised polled Herefords and planted several hundred acres.
Bob leaves behind friends and supporters too numerous to name and from all walks of life and corners of the globe.
Our family thanks Arizona Professional Care Services in Scottsdale and Encore Senior Services in Excelsior, Minn. for their kind, respectful caregiving. Services will be held in Minnesota.

Russell Kress
Russell Kress, 61, of Fountain Hills lost his battle with cancer on March 19, 2013 after a good fight.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y. in 1951, Russell moved to Arizona as a young man and graduated from Scottsdale High School. Russell had a successful 30-year career at Motorola.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Russell and Rita Kress. Russell is survived by his wife, Gene Kress; and three children, Angie (Dave) DeBellis, Ryan (Bianca) Kress and Rob (Shelly) Kress; and six wonderful grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a local animal shelter. Private services are to be held.

Ruth-Marie Lyons
Ruth-Marie Lyons, beloved mother, grandmother and friend to all, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2013.
She was born on Sept. 6, 1917 in Ann Arbor, Mich., the daughter of Henry and Anna Werner. She grew up in Chelsea, Mich. On June 16, 1936, she was united in marriage to Alfred W. Lyons. Their blessed marriage lasted 58 years until his passing in 1994. Three children were born to this marriage, Alfred W. Lyons, II, Barbara J. Hansen and Margaret M. Spear.
Ruth-Marie moved to Fountain Hills after her husband’s death to live near her daughter, Barbara Hansen. Ruth-Marie had seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Living in Kalamazoo, Mich. her entire married life, Ruth-Marie was a homemaker, working only at election time when she was an election chairman for 30 years in her precinct.
Her love of sewing was her greatest pleasure. It was well known that anything that could be done on a sewing machine, she could do it. Family members maintain there wasn’t a crossword puzzle anywhere that could stump her. Though she did not share her husband’s love of golf, she was a great bowler.
Ruth-Marie’s gentle and loving spirit combined with her wit and wisdom were her greatest charms and will be so missed by the family. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and was President of the Workers of Mary.
One of the highlights of her life was when Al joined the Knights of Columbus, working through all the chairs until he became the State Deputy of Michigan. She truly enjoyed being first lady of the Michigan Knights. The Lyons traveled all over Michigan visiting KofC Councils and had a wealth of friends. Her favorite place to go was to the Knights of Columbus State Convention at Mackinac Island.
They returned every year and their daughter, Margaret, was married on the island during a state convention and had her reception at the famous Grand Hotel. Ruth-Marie was invited back to Mackinac Island for the convention every year as the honorable wife of the past state deputy.
She and Al were able to travel to Rome and had an audience with the Pope. She also treasured the memory of attending John F. Kennedy’s inauguration and attending the inauguration balls.
When she moved to Fountain Hills she became very involved in Four Peaks Women’s Club, once again contributing her sewing abilities. She was a member of Church of the Ascension.
Ruth-Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Al; daughter, Margaret Marie Spear; brothers, William and Paul. Surviving are son, Alfred William II, Silver Springs, Fla.; and daughter, Barbara J. Hansen (Fred), Fountain Hills; grandchildren, Laurie Anne Stamas (James), Scottsdale, Mark Andrew Lenderink (Pam), Kalamazoo, Mich., Robert Michael Lenderink (Heidi), Phoenix, Dierdre M. Spear, Woodstock, Ga., John Hall Spear, II (Melissa), Chicago, Ill., Paul Lyons, Kentwood, Mich. and Patricia Lyons, Oakland, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Alexia and Stephanie Stamas; Cole, Corbin, Mckenna and Macie Lenderink; Christian and Olivia Petee; beloved nephews, Henry (Barbara) Werner, Tucson, Paul (Mila) Werner, Fairfax, Va. and Jeanne Marie Valliere (Vaughn) Johnstown, Colo.
Also surviving is her dearest friend, Bob Moore, Fountain Hills, who has lovingly been at her side for 15 and one half years.
Cremation has taken place and a family service will take place in Michigan in June. The family expresses its gratitude to Sunflower Assisted Living in Fountain Hills for the tremendous care Ruth-Marie has received over the past two years. They treated her as family for which we will be forever grateful.

Veronica E. Reilly
Veronica Emma Reilly (nee Jordan) passed to the care of our Lord on March 21, 2013.
She was born Jan. 17, 1931 to Mary Emma Jordan and raised by the Goerls along with her adopted family of five other girls.
She married Thomas (Tom) Reilly Nov. 25, 1950. She is survived by her husband, Tom; three sons, Tom Jr., Ken and Bill, and five granddaughters, Kelly, Megan, Kate, Evelyn and Mary.
Mom was a member of the Sweet Adelines and everyone enjoyed her singing.
She was mom, raising three boys and rarely missed a beat. Whether it was showing us to clean a fish, ride a bike, sew a button or emphatically to remove the dead snake from the house, she was there for us.
When the family moved to Arizona in 1974 she handled the bookkeeping for Tom’s construction company until they both retired to Prescott in 2003.
Roni, mom or nana will always be a loving and warm memory for all her family and wonderful, caring friends.

A private family gathering will be followed by internment at the National cemetery in Phoenix.
William H. Shappley
William Harold Shappley, 88, of Fountain Hills, passed away March 20, 2013. He was born June 1, 1924 in Memphis, Tenn.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific during WWII aboard the battleship USS Maryland. His ship survived two kamikaze attacks and one torpedo attack while he was aboard. He was honorably discharged in March, 1946.
He married Genevieve Welle in Bellflower, Cal. on Dec. 10, 1945. They lived in Memphis for 10 years. In 1956-57 he worked as a photographer for the Memphis newspaper The Commercial Appeal just when Elvis Presley was starting to become famous.
They returned to Long Beach, Cal. in 1957. He worked as an insurance adjuster for Commercial Credit/Control Data until his retirement in1985. They moved to Fountain Hills in 1991.

Lloyd C. Billings
Lloyd C. Billings, 92, born Sept. 11, 1920, passed away peacefully at the Eckstein Center, Scottsdale, April 4, 2013. He was surrounded by his loving wife Shirley and close dear friends. The Billings were married for 65 years.
Lloyd was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, Pacific Fleet, during WWII. He was stationed at the end of the war in Australia and it was there he met his future bride.
Lloyd achieved his Ph.D. in economics at the University of Arizona and taught the subject at the University of Arizona and Eastern Washington State University, Spokane.
He retired from Eastern Washington State in 1984 and moved to Fountain Hills in 1986 where he enjoyed his retirement with good friends, tennis and bridge. Lloyd is a former member of the Fountain Hills Rotary Club and Club Mirage Tennis and Swim Club.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Shirley; two brothers, William Billings and Joseph Billings, of Kansas City, Kan.; 17 nephews and 10 nieces.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 10, at 3 p.m. at the Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 Saguaro Blvd.
Lloyd will be honored with a full military service at the Veterans cemetery Thursday, April 11, at 1 p.m.

Michael Buchanan
Michael D. Buchanan of Alton, Ill., 48, passed away March 30, 2013 at home with his loving family by his side.
He was a devoted father to his two children, Travis Allen and Angela Sandra Buchanan.
He is survived by his sister, Rhonda Schlitz of Nevada; brothers, Jack Alan Buchanan of Illinois, Paul Buchanan of Arizona and Mark A. Buchanan of Arizona; and his father, Jack Austin Buchanan of Fountain Hills.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Carol A. Wyman (Buchanan).
Visitation and services were held at the Paynic Home for Funerals in East Alton, Ill.
Roger Lee Dailey Sr.
Roger Lee Dailey Sr.; Aug. 31, 1937 – April 4, 2013.
Roger was born in Breckenridge, Minn. on Aug. 31, 1937 to Russell Edwin Dailey and Margaret Genevieve Fleming Dailey; he grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa and was the third son of his parents’ four boys. Roger’s other brothers are Leonard (deceased), Murray, (Fountain Hills by way of Sea Ranch, Calif.) and Gary (Fountain, Colo.)
Roger attended Storm Lake High School, class of ‘55; he served in the US Navy from January 1956 to 1960, and after his discharge, he headed back to Iowa and began his sales career in Des Moines as a Wearever salesman (yes, pots and pans).
One day Roger knocked on Darlene Marie Luger’s door, hoping to sell her some pans. Roger said their 50-plus year marriage was evidence that he was a great salesman. Their marriage produced two children, Dawn Marie Dailey Luke and Roger Lee Dailey Jr.
Roger was a gentle, sweet man; it was evident as a child and the gentleness continued throughout his life. He found good in everyone. He loved God, his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers, in-law and extended family with his whole being. His legacy of love and kindness is a gift to the ones who are left behind.
Roger, we know you as Honey, Dad, Duke and Roger. We will miss your smiling blue eyes. We will miss the dancing, either as your partner or watching you and Darlene from the audience. We look forward to joining you again one day with our Heavenly Father.
Roger is survived by his wife, Darlene; and children, Dawn and Lee. The immediate family includes spouses, Maureen Dailey and Brady Luke and six grandchildren, Wesley, Mitchell, Rolee, Spencer, Mikaela and Emma. The surviving extended family includes Gary and Margaret Dailey, Murray Dailey, Michelle and Gary Holcomb, Doug and Pat Luger, Dale and Patti Luger and Gene and Torrie Lloyd.
Services were held Tuesday, April 9, 2013. The celebration of Roger’s life was at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Fountain Hills.
