Elizabeth “Betty” Joly, 84, died May 7, 2010. She was born in St. Louis, Mo. and moved to Fountain Hills in 1979.
She graduated from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy to practice her lifelong career in pharmacy.
She is survived by her husband, Paul M. Joly; her son, Ed Joly; daughter, Beth Joly; and sister, Nancy J. Brown.
She will be missed greatly by her family and friends. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.
Peter Klauss
Peter Phillip Klauss, 86, WWII Navy Veteran of Fountain Hills and previously of Antioch, Skokie and Chicago, Ill., entered into God’s glory April 28, 2010.
Loving husband to Lynda Rose (nee Connelly); beloved father of Keith Thomas (Lynne), Russell Peter (Cyndee), Martin Paul (Indra), Deborah Ruth (nee Stannard) (David), Robert Scott Stannard, Elizabeth Jean (nee Klauss) (Ron); dear grandfather to Jenna Andrea, Amanda LeAnne, Ryan Matthew, Rebecca Lyn, Elizabeth Anne Fox, Logan Alexander, Colton Jameson, Rhys Martin, Nicole Elizabeth Stannard, Jonathan Austin Wanner, Kaylie Andrea Konazeski and great grandfather to Bear Von Stout.
Memorial services are May 15, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 13770 N. Fountain Hills Boulevard.

Eleanor M. Kureski
Eleanor M. Kureski (nee: Parendo, Kirppu-Siran) age 82 of Fountain Hills died on April 21, 2010 at Hospice of Arizona in Scottsdale.
Eleanor was born on Jan. 18, 1928 in Sauk Center, Minn. to Theodore (Ted) and Hildegard (Hilda) Stadtherr-Genrich.
After finishing school, Eleanor moved to Duluth, Minn. She was employed by Western Electric and then continued her education and graduated from the Carey-Gaspard School of Business.
She worked at the Davidson Publishing Company and the Bomark Missile Base as a secretary. She then continued her career as an executive secretary and retired after 28 years from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, Department of Communication Disorders.
Eleanor was involved in many activities during the years she lived in Duluth. She was also an avid golfer attaining a hole-in-one her first year of golfing. She enjoyed spending summers in Duluth staying in UMD student housing, Heaney Hall.
Eleanor and her husband, Raymond moved to Fountain Hills in 1990. She continued golfing in Arizona and also became an active volunteer at the Heard Museum of Indian Art in Phoenix.
Eleanor is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond, and her brother, Richard. She is survived by six sisters and one brother, a plethora of nieces and nephews and many friends throughout the United States.
A memorial service for Eleanor was held at Fountain View Village where she had resided for nine months. Memorials may be made to the Heard Museum Student Art Card Scholarship Program.
Betty I. Lind
Betty I. (Elizabeth) Lind, age 78, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 2, 2010 in Fountain Hills.
Betty was preceded in death by loving husband, Hans V. Lind; parents, Lillian and Robert Spedding; and brother Raymond Spedding.
She was born in Detroit, Mich. and graduated from Pershing High School. She was office manager at W.H. Greenwalt Co., in Southfield, Mich. when she retired.
Betty and Hans were married in 1957 and resided in Royal Oak, Mich. prior to moving to Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
They were members of Bayview Yacht Club where Hans enjoyed sailboat racing. He crewed local races for the club and especially enjoyed the annual Detroit to Mackinac Island race for many years. Betty looked forward to meeting him at Mackinac Island at the conclusion of the race.
Together, they enjoyed traveling, downhill skiing, tennis, hiking and socializing with friends. They were members of Club Mirage in Fountain Hills.
After Hans’ death in 1997 Betty made Fountain Hills her permanent home. She developed lasting friendships with women who celebrated birthdays together and other occasions such as Cinco de Mayo.
Betty is survived by nieces, Lynne (Ole) Stavedahl of The Villages, Fla., Laura (Paul) Geisel of Redondo Beach, Calif., Laura (Roger) Stanwich of Frankfort, Mich., Elaine (Bob) Meredith of Ada, Mich.; nephew, Bob (Nancy) Lind of Atlanta, Mich.; sister-in-law, Frances Spedding of The Villages, Fla.; brother-in-law Robert (Viv) Lind of Frankfort, Mich.; many cousins in England and New Zealand; great-nieces and nephews, loving dog Sami, and wonderful friends in Fountain Hills.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 15, at 11 a.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd. (480) 837-5588.

Brad W. Barnett
Brad William Barnett, a Marina del Rey, Calif. resident and former resident of Fountain Hills died Sunday, June 6, at the age of 60.
He was born in Oakland, Calif. on Oct. 13, 1949. He is survived by his older brother, Rick Barnett of Fountain Hills; and his fiancée, Renee Baldwin of Marina del Rey.
A UCLA graduate with a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology, his great love for the outdoors led him to become a professional boat captain for many years, as well as an ordained minister to perform weddings at sea.
Brad was the skipper of “Seasmoke,” the fastest catamaran ever built back in the early 1970s that belonged to James Arness of the famed TV series “Gunsmoke.”
Having been licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard, he worked on many television and movie productions, including nearly every Steven Cannell production, “Rip tide,” “Hardcastle and McCormick,” “A-Team,” “Rockford Files,” and movies, “Winds of War,” and “War and Remembrance,” and also, many commercials for television. He also operated the tourist fleet for years for the Marina del Rey Hotel for RPM.
At one time Brad was the general manager of Stats Sports Bar and Grille, the first pure sports bar in Los Angeles (not counting Legends in Belmont Shores).
Brad was an avid golfer and worked at Orangetree in Scottsdale. He loved to travel, and to hang out with his dogs, Barney and then Elwood. Friends say Brad will always be remembered for his gentle, kind heart, his loving and generous nature, and his unconditional friendship. His desire to give was exemplified by his decision to be an organ donor, giving others a chance at a renewed life.
A memorial celebration in honor of Brad’s life was held Saturday, June 12, at the Villa San Remo Courtyard in Marina del Rey. Per his request, his ashes will be scattered at sea at a later date.
Mildred I. Devlin
Mildred I. Devlin passed away peacefully at her home Tuesday, June 8, 2010. Millie, as she was affectionately known by many, was 91 years of age. Her daughters, Patricia and Catherine, were at her side.
Born Mildred Irene DeJong and raised on a farm in Iowa, Mildred attended the University of Iowa Nursing School, graduating and becoming a registered nurse. She met her future husband, Henry B. Devlin, on a blind date while at the university and they married on Sept. 2, 1941.
They moved to Detroit, Mich., Dr. Devlin’s home town, where he worked at Parke Davis and Co. his entire career. Mildred’s nursing career included working for a blood bank, hospital work and chair-side assistant for an oral surgeon. During that time the couple raised their two daughters.
Mildred and her husband were among the early investors in Fountain Hills, visiting the area on a McCulloch sponsored trip and telling their daughters that they “weren’t going to buy anything.” But they purchased a lot, then sold it and found a house on Boulder. They moved to Fountain Hills in 1976 when Dr. Devlin retired.
But Mildred was not ready for retirement. She worked part-time in a stitching shop in Scottsdale. Then she went to Jerry’s Fountain Hills Pharmacy from the mid-80s until 1991 when the store closed.
Mildred’s interests were many. There were always new dresses for the girls for occasions like Christmas and Easter, sewn carefully by Millie. Later, she tried her hand at macramé, decoupage, stenciling, stamping, embossing and quilting. Playing bridge with her friends was another activity she enjoyed.
Mildred had a very healthy lifestyle and faithfully walked one to two miles a day until near her 90th birthday. Daughter Catherine worked abroad in Mexico, Hong Kong and England, and Mildred traveled to visit her several times.
A thimble collector, Millie joined Thimble Collectors International and attended many of their conventions nationwide. She took great pleasure in her collection of thimbles from all over the world.
Not afraid of a computer, Mildred also enjoyed creating beautiful greeting cards. Needlework of all kinds was her passion even before leaving Michigan, and Mildred won several ribbons at the Arizona State Fair. When her eyesight started to fail, that didn’t stop Millie. She began knitting and joined the Hooks and Needles group at the Fountain Hills Senior Center.
Millie also volunteered, helping in the Presbyterian Church office, delivering Meals on Wheels and working in various capacities for the homeowners association. A very generous person, Millie sponsored a child through the Compassionate Child Program.
Millie is survived by her daughters, Patricia, of Fountain Hills, and Catherine, who lives abroad with her husband, Maarten; three grandsons, Roland, Meikle and Peter Prochaska, all of Washington State; three step grandsons who live abroad; three nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, parents, one sister and two brothers.
A memorial service celebrating Mildred’s life was held Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church where Millie was a long-time member.
The family wishes donations to be made to the American Cancer Society, Senior Services at the Fountain Hills Senior Center, or the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church earmarked for maintenance and upkeep of the Columbarium area.
Wilma “Sally” Mason
Wilma “Sally” Mason, who was a Fountain Hills resident for many years, passed away June 9, 2010 at the age of 89.
Sally was born in Oklahoma City on Nov. 20, 1920. She is preceded in death by her parents, her older sisters, Ethel and Marguerite, and her beloved husband, Clifford.
Sally was a homemaker who enjoyed bridge, golfing, volunteer work, and entertaining. She had a zest for life that was remarked upon by all who knew her.
She is survived by her three children, Mary (Tim) Loehnis, John Mason, and Cyndy (John) Finnigan; as well as her three grandchildren, Patrick, Jennifer, and Timothy Finnigan.
A memorial service will be held at Saint Ann’s cemetery in Stoughton, Wis. Donations in Sally’s memory may be made to Hospice of the Valley.
Judith A. Mortimer
Judith Anne Mortimer, age 71, passed away peacefully at her home in Fountain Hills on June 9, 2010 after courageously battling a rare illness.
She was born on April 4, 1939 in Chicago, Ill. to Leslie and Beatrice Murray and moved to Glen Ellyn, Ill. as a child.
Judy graduated from Glenbard High School in 1957 and attended Western Illinois University. She had a special gift for writing poems and children’s stories and published two books, Once in a Dream and Lucy Anne Pickle. Her other passions included decorating and art.
Judy touched the lives of so many with her warm heart, her love for the Lord, and her ability to encourage others through His word.
She is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, George; a brother, Don; her five children and 13 grandchildren.
Judy was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Heather; her brother, Ken; and her parents.
Judy’s love and genuine regard for others touched so many lives, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Visitation was held on Friday, June 11, at Messinger’s Fountain Hills Mortuary. A funeral service was held on Saturday, June 12, at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.

Lawrence E. Ruggiero
Lawrence E. Ruggiero was born June 26, 1934 and passed away July 22, 2010.
He was born in New York City and moved to the Valley in 1978 after retiring from the New York City Police Department.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Angela Ruggiero; sons, Lawrence Jr. (Cheryl), Edward (Kelly) and Andrew (Annette). He was the grandfather of 11, Dominick, Anna, Frank, Samantha, Nicole, Lawrence, Angelina, Vincent, Anthony, Nicholas and Matthew; and the great-grandfather of Gina and Giada.
Services will be held Saturday, July 31, 2010, 11 a.m. at Church of the Ascension Catholic Church, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd. A reception will follow immediately at Phil’s Restaurant, 16852 E. Parkview Ave., Fountain Hills.

Jerome R. Stack
Jerome (Jerry) Raleigh Stack was born Sept. 30, 1922 and died July 24, 2010.
Jerry was born in Chicago, Ill. to Thomas and Mary Stack. He was a World War II veteran in the South Pacific. He worked for the Rock Island Railroad as a freight manager retiring after 42 years.
He moved to Fountain Hills in 1989 with his wife, Gloria, his mate of 61 years. He enjoyed many years of retirement, golfing, bowling and playing pinochle.
Jerry was liked by everyone. He was very quick witted and enjoyed telling stories and entertaining all who met him. He was well loved and will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria Dorothy (nee Williams); loving father of Gail M. Copley, Sheila J. Cassidy (Ralph), Bonnie J. Lockwood (John), Kathleen A. VanderJack (Kevin) and Gary J. Stack (Kathy).
He was the grandfather to Karen (Andy), Jeanine (Rusty), Lauren (Chris), Sondra, Brenna (Dan), Heather (Sean), Brian, Megan, Amy, Julie, Melanie, Dana, Craig, Joey, and Alex; and great-grandfather of eight; also an uncle to many loving nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by brothers Joseph, Anthony (Joan), Edward (Mary); and sister, Lucille.
A Catholic funeral mass will be held at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., on Thursday, July 29, at 10 a.m. A burial will be held following mass at National Memorial cemetery of Arizona at 12:30 p.m. Please omit flowers.
Byron Balderaz
Byron Balderaz was born Aug. 25, 1963 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix to Bruno Balderaz and the late Fayrene Teresa Talakte.
He is the grandson of the late Elsie Dickens and the great-great-grandson of the late Pauline and Richard Dickens, all of Fort McDowell.
He leaves behind his wife, Vera Harold Balderaz; one daughter, Gabriela; and two sons, Kendall and Breylan.
Also surviving are two sisters, Claudette Rivera and Alicia Balderaz; two brothers, Ruben Balderaz and Rick Balderaz; nieces, Rose, Josie, Sarah, Aubrey, Ariana, Marjorie, Ardena and Julie; nephews, Donald, Peter, Richard and Conner; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Richard H. Keen
Richard Hartzell Keen was born May 29, 1920, and died Sept. 6, 2010.
Richard was born in Alliance, Ohio to Joseph Ross and Mabel Keen. He was the second son of three siblings.
He graduated from Alliance High School in 1938. He worked during his high school years as a custodian at the Christ United Methodist Church in Alliance where he and his family were members.
He met and married Beverly Rae Robb, also of Alliance, in 1943. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in May.
They moved to Columbus, Ohio where Richard became employed by Lennox Furnace Industries, later called Lennox International. He attended Ohio State University and became Division Controller for Lennox. He retired after 42 years of service.
Richard was an active member in the North Broadway Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio, where he loved singing in the choir.
In 1974 Richard transferred to Stuttgart, Ark. with Lennox. He became a member of the 1st United Methodist Church.
He and Beverly relocated to Fountain Hills in 1986. They were members of the Fountain Hills United Methodist Church and later became members of the Scottsdale Bible Church where they enjoyed the fellowship of the Hearty Souls.
They were also in the Fountain Hills Newcomers Club and Richard was a member of the Lions Club International.
A year ago they moved to Fountain View Village and enjoyed their time there.
Richard passed away on Sept. 6, 2010, at age 90.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Ross and Mabel Hartzell Keen, and his brother, Donald Keen, of Alliance, Ohio. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughters, Karen and Patricia of California, and Cheryl of Indiana, and their spouses; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Virginia Robart of Sebring, Ohio. Also surviving are his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, John and Elsie Roush, of Fountain Hills.
He will be greatly missed.
