Hector F. Evans, Jr.
Hector Fredrick Evans, Jr., Lt. Col. USAF, Ret. died Oct. 2, in Tacoma, Wash. He had previously been a Fountain Hills resident for more than 15 years.
Mr. Evans was born July 16, 1931 in Boston, Mass. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 31 years of dedicated services to his country. He was an active member of the Air Force Association and a graduate of the University of Nebraska. He was also an avid fisherman.
Mr. Evans is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Marie Johnson Evans; a son Bruce (Cheryl) Evans; three daughters, Karen (Edward) Hallac, Susan (Dwayne) Aaron and Nancy (Robert) Kaplan; three brothers, Kenneth (Kitty) Evans, Walter (Marge) Evans and Ronald Evans; a sister Marjorie (John) Jingo; and nine grandchildren, Patricia, Neal, Ellen, Cara, Dan, Evan, Joel, Daniel and Dylan.
A memorial service for Mr. Evans was held at All Saints Episcopal Church in Tacoma, Wash. Interment will take place at Arlington National cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorial contributions to Tomorrow’s Children’s Fund at Hackensack Hospital, 30 Prospect Ave., Hackensack, N.J. and the Tacoma Opera Company.

Eric Jacobsen
Eric Jacobsen, 75, of Fountain Hills, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002. Mr. Jacobsen was a World War II Army Veteran. He was also a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and past president of the American-Electro-Platers Socety, Chicago Branch. Mr. Jacobsen was also a past president of the Chicago Metal Finishes Association. He was the owner/operator of James Precious Metals, Inc. since 1951.
Mr. Jacobsen is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marion. He is also survived by three children; Kenneth, Diane and Gail as well as a sister, Lillian Anderson. Mr. Jacobsen has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held in Illinois at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd. in Fountain Hills.
Carol Miller
Carol A. Miller, 34, of Rochester, Minn., daughter of Walter and Rita Miller and sister of Cindy Miller, of Fountain Hills, died Oct. 23, 2002 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
She lived at Hiawatha Kings Run in Rochester, where the homes were started by families with mentally retarded children.
Without Carol and other earth angels, group homes, etc. would not have been started. This was Carol’s purpose in life and her lesson for everyone. She was a quiet spirit who enjoyed classical music and spending time with loved ones. Her sister in heaven, Cathy, called her home to come and play with the angels and celebrate her accomplishments. It’s a blessing she came to earth and now is set free.
Services were being held Oct. 30 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Litomysl, Somerset Township, Rural Steele County. Burial followed at the church cemetery. Memorials will go to Hiawatha Kings Run.
Eleanor Arbanas
Eleanor Arbanas, 82, of Fountain Hills died Nov. 20, 2002.
Visitation was held Nov. 23 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, with a service being held Nov. 23 at Church of the Ascension.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Church of the Ascension’s building fund.
Milly Harris
Millicent E. "Milly" Harris died Nov. 17, 2002 at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Scottsdale.
Born Dec. 1, 1917 and raised in Twin Falls, she developed a lifelong passion for the West.
Her father, William Eldridge, homesteaded in Idaho and was a Twin Falls pioneer at the turn of the century. He was the clothier and mayor of Twin Falls, and his mother Grace was the town librarian.
Mrs. Harris graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash. and was a proud member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
She met and married Jack Harris during World War II. He was a decorated B-17 captain during the war and they were happily married for 56 years. Milly lived much of her life in Glenview, Ill., where she raised three sons and held a career as a junior high school teacher.
Milly and Jack moved to Rio Verde in 1982. Active in the community, Milly spent several years organizing the Rio Verde Library. Always known for a positive, cheerful attitude and can-do spirit, her interests included reading thousands of books.
She moved to Classic Residence at Gray Hawk after her husband’s death in 1999.
Survivors include sons, William E. Harris and Diantha of Chicago, Ill., John R. Harris and Barb of Alpharetta, Ga., Dewey Harris and Anne of Chesterfield, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service was held Nov. 23 at Rio Verde Community Church. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation, P.O. Box 38, Columbus, OH 43126-0038, RE: Millicent E. Harris, Whitman College.
Judith A. Kulaga
Judith Adele Kulaga passed away on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend. She is survived by her husband Ted; sons Jeffrey, Steven and David; two grandchildren; and three daughters-in-law, Mary, Renee and Colleen.
The joy of Judith’s life came from her children, grandchildren and her many friends. Her kind and giving spirit has touched too many lives to count. She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
Judith was employed by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office for 10 years and was working at the Fountain Hills substation.
Visitation and a scripture service were held Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Whitney & Murphy Arcadia Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 5045 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix. Interment is at St. Frances cemetery and Mausoleum in Phoenix.

Anthony Bianco
Anthony Bianco, a resident of Estes Park, Colo. and Fountain Hills, passed away Nov. 27, 2002 at the age of 83.
He was born in Panni, Italy to Mr. and Mrs. Carmine Bianco. The family came to the United States when Anthony was five years old and made their home in Danvars, Mass.
Anthony enlisted in the Marine Corps following high school graduation. He was a paratrooper in World War II. He served in the Philippine Islands, Iwo Jima, Taipan and Bouganville. Following his honorable discharge from the Marines, he attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. On Nov. 17, 1951 he married Imogene (Amy) Nuxell in Enterprise, Ore.
Mr. Bianco was a registered laboratory and X-ray technician before becoming a licensed hospital administrator. He was a hospital administrator at Long Prairie Hospital in Long Prairie, Minn., Pacific Community Hospital in Newport, Ore. and the first administrator at the Estes Park Hospital.
Anthony was known for the beautiful wildflowers he grew. Visitors would stop and admire the results of many hours of work that were also his joy.
He is survived by his wife Amy, daughter Tonilyn, sons Stephen and Tim, four brothers, two sisters, one granddaughter and two great granddaughters.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be made to the Estes Park Medical Center Foundation in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 1302 Graves Avenue, Estes Park, CO 80517.
Rodney Ernest Hunter
Rodney Ernest Hunter passed away on Dec. 5, 2002 in Prescott, Ariz. He was born on April 27, 1931 in Richmond, Maine to Wallace L. and Hazel G. (Baxter) Hunter.
Rod moved to Fountain Hills, Ariz., in 1992 from Glendale, Calif. At the time of his retirement, he was the Manager of Technical Facilities at KABC-TV in Hollywood. He moved to Prescott in 2001.
As a Mason, Rod was a member of Hiram Lodge No. 180 in South Portland, Maine. He also was a member of the American Radio Relay League and the National Rifle Association. Rod was an amateur radio operator, an astronomer, a photographer and a watercolor artist. He also enjoyed target practice as a firearms enthusiast.
Rod served in the Army during the Korean War as a Chief Radio Operator of an anti-aircraft radar system, then as a Platoon Sergeant in a training battalion.
Survivors include his wife, Nan Hunter of Prescott; sons and daughters-in law, Bob and Cindy Hunter of Pecatonica, Ill., and Ernie and Debbie Hunter of Holts Summit, Mo.; daughter and son-in-law, Kaye and Ed Collins of Lehi, Utah; brothers and sister-in-law Floyd Hunter of Syracuse, N.Y. and Russ and Dottie Hunter of Conway, N.H.; sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Paul Bowden of Gales Ferry, Conn.; grandchildren, Susan, Elijah, Matthew, Josilyn, Colby, Parker and Reed and great-grandchildren, Jordan, Madison and Jobe.
A Masonic Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2003 at Merry Meeting Bay Cemetary in Bowdoinham, Maine.

Felix Putterman
Felix M. Putterman died on Dec. 8, 2002 at his home in Fountain Hills at the age of 83.
Born in the Bronx, N.Y., on Oct. 10, 1919, to Achilles Boas and Pia Iberall, Felix was raised in Gloversville, N.Y. Married in 1942 to his wife of 38 years, Ethel Berlin, Felix attended New York University, Yale University and was graduated from George Washington University with a degree in economics.
After serving in the European theater during World War II, Felix began his professional career in Washington D.C. as an economist with Robert R. Nathan and Associates, later becoming a legislative assistant to John Foley, a congressman from Maryland. Following his employment on Capitol Hill, he served as both the Legislative and Executive Director of the Jewish War Veterans of America.
In 1975, Felix and his artist wife, Ethel, left their home in Maryland to open an art gallery in Orleans, Mass., on Cape Cod. After Ethel’s death in 1982, Felix spent the final years of his professional life as a legislative aid to Gov. Michael Dukakis in Boston, Mass.
Felix is survived by a daughter, Julie, of Chicago, Ill.; sons Bert and Peter of Fountain Hills; Bert’s wife, Darice, and their three children, Tyler, Jared and Kira.
A memorial gathering will take place on Sunday, Dec. 15, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Putterman residence at 16856 Last Trail Drive.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for support of National Public Radio and KJZZ radio.
Linda Sue Jackson
Linda Sue Jackson, daughter of Bob and Evelyn Littfin, died Nov. 7, at her home in Kyle, Texas.
Ms. Jackson was one of six children and was preceded in death by her sister, Bonnie Jo Littfin in 1963.
She is survived by her parents; two sons, Chad Jackson of Fountain Hills and Jason Jackson of Austin Texas; two sisters, Peggy Sauerwald of Michigan and Valorie Imgarten of Delaware; and two brothers, Jeffery Littfin of Montana and Rob Littfin of Colorado (formerly of Fountain Hills).
A memorial mass was said Nov. 13, at Santa Cruz Catholic Church in Buda, Texas.
The Littfin family members wish to express their gratitude for all the many cards, calls and prayers offered by their friends in Fountain Hills.
Jennifer H. Maland
Jennifer Hunter Maland, born April 17, 1965 in Chicago, passed away Jan. 7, 2003 – moving on to peace and serenity.
Her favorite occupation was as a white water guide, for numerous years, from the mountains of West Virginia to the high Sierras of Northern California. She had a creative mind and adventurous spirit, loving and living in the outdoors.
Jen was preceded in death by her mother Judith Perkins Maland, and survived by her father, David Maland (his wife Trish), her sister Susan Ludewic (her husband Will) and their children Cole and Kyle, her maternal grandmother, Dorothy Vetter (her husband Ed) and her fraternal grandmother Iola Maland.
A memorial service will be held at Fountain Park, Golden Barrel Ramada, on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 3 p.m. A celebration of life reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Niffer’s Wilderness Ventures Memorial Fund.
Conrad H. Schaefer
Conrad H. Schaefer, a 20-year-resident of Fountain Hills, passed away Jan. 25, 2003.
An Air Force veteran of World War II and former insurance salesman, Schaefer is survived by two sons, Robert and Gary; three grandchildren, David and Andrew Schaefer and Sandraclaire Little as well as and five great grandchildren.
Inurnment at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fountain Hills will be held at a later date.
Al Baardseth
Al (Bob) Baardseth, 72, retired captain of Western Airlines, passed away Sept. 17, 2003 in Fountain Hills.
On Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at 12:40 p.m. a memorial service will be held at the Veterans cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.

Joseph Fernandez
Joseph A. "Tony" Fernandez, 92, of Fountain Hills died Sept. 20, 2003 in Scottsdale.
Born May 30, 1911 in Cherryvale, Kan., Mr. Fernandez was a retired bookkeeper with American Oil Company (Amoco, now part of British Petroleum).
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Olga Helton of Cherryvale; brother-in-law Francis E. Brooks of Cherryvale; a nephew, Frank Helton Jr. of Fountain Hills; and a niece, Sue Shaffer of Dayton, Ohio.
Services were held at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary and at the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale. Interment was at St. Francis Catholic cemetery in Cherryvale.
Jean Tollefsrud
Jean A. (Niemi) Tollefsrud, 60, wife of Dalmon, passed away Sept. 23, 2003 after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Marquette, Mich. Nov. 7, 1942 to Arne and Katherine Niemi.
She enjoyed being with her family and friends, enjoyed traveling and the outdoors – especially hiking and biking – and also enjoyed doing needlework and quilting with the ladies at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
She devoted many years to the care of others during her nursing career.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Reino.
She is survived by her husband, Dalmon; two sons, Jeff of Red Wing, Minn. and Paul of Hastings, Minn.; one sister, Marlene Deegan of Salt Lake City, Utah; four nieces and two nephews.
Donations can be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation or Morris Animal Foundation. A special thank you to hospice team members for their loving care.
Services were held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Sept. 27 with the Rev. Joel Bjerkestrand officiating.
