Florence Nickel
Florence Nickel, 93, of Fountain Hills died Feb. 2, 2005 in Arizona.
She was born Jan. 4, 1912 to William (and Alma Schick) Humbracht in Bartlett, Ill.
She married Roy Nickel on Nov. 18, 1933 in Bartlett, Ill. at the Immanuel United Church of Christ where she was a member for many years. Much of her later years were spent in Minong, Wis., where she was presently a member of the Presbyterian Church of Gordon, Wis.
She is survived by two daughters, Rita (Wm.) Shaw of Elgin, Ill., and Minong, Wis., and Marilyn (Clair) Engle of Cody, Wyo. and Fountain Hills; and a son, Roy (Mary Ann) Nickel of Elgin, Ill., Fountain Hills and Minong, Wis.; and eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, in 1984, and two brothers, Harold (Butch) Humbracht and Wm. G. (Bill) Humbracht, as well as an infant sister.
Arrangements for a memorial service and burial are being made for a later date by Brown Funeral Home of Minong.
The family suggests that any memorials be made to the Minong Senior Center of Minong, WI 54859 or the Presbyterian Church of Gordon, WI 54838.
Janice Warren
Janice Joy Warren, 69, of Fountain Hills passed away Feb. 2, 2005.
She was born in Harland County, Kentucky on Feb. 14, 1935.
Janice is survived by her sons, Jeff Henson, Doug Henson (Trinh Tran) and Mike Henson (Julie Churchill); sister, Virginia Lee Murphy; brother, Arthur Warren; and five grandchildren, Phoebe, Nick, George, Henry and Nora.
Visitation was held Feb. 5 at Hansen Desert Hills Chapel.
Sara Jane Wasilewski
Sara Jane Wasilewski of Rio Verde passed away Jan. 31, 2005.
Sara Jane was born Jan. 22, 1939 to Henry and Elizabeth (Paddock) Wulff in Cambridge, N.Y. She will forever be a member of the 11th generation of the Puritan New England Harrington family which had it origins in the 11th century in the ancient Town of Harrington, Cumberland, England.
Sara Jane is survived by her husband of 45 years, Frank A. Wasilewski; her son, Henry A. Wasilewski; and devoted family members Vera Noxin, William Wulff, T. Richard Wulff, Violet Cloris and Carl Wulff, all of New York; and Zigmund Wasilewski, Mary Tarsa, Stanley Wasilewski, Leo Wasilewski and Eleanor DeMarco.
Sara Jane was an extraordinary and talented woman who touched the lives of her family and friends and will be deeply missed and remembered forever.
Visitation services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 Saguaro Blvd., Fountain Hills.
Services will be held Thursday, Feb. 10, at 4 p.m. at Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church, 6502 E. Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek.
A memorial service will also be held Thursday, Feb. 17, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Turnbull, Conn. and on Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Episcopal Church in Cambridge, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church, 6502 E. Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek, AZ.
Mary Waud
Mary J. Waud, 88, of Scottsdale died April 13, 2002.
Born Oct. 23, 1913 in Pontiac, Mich., she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her son, Roger Waud (Katie) of Alexandria, Va.; daughter, Jennifer Kayser (James) of Fountain Hills; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Phoenix Symphony.
Rosemary Hale
Fountain Hills resident Rosemary Hale, 83 years old, died Aug. 16 in Scottsdale. She was born Nov. 27, 1918 in Numa, Iowa and was a homemaker.
Her survivors include her sons, William J. Hale (Susan) of Scottsdale, David Hale (Paula) of Broomfield, Colo.; daughters Linda Holloway (Ted) of Hoboken, Ga. and Teri Hale of Fountain Hills; grandchildren Nick Hale of Fountain Hills, Gizette Anderson of Fort Collins, Colo., Tanya Hale of Broomfield, Colo. and Julie Fields of Hoboken, Ga. and one great-grandchild Jay Parker Fields of Hoboken, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth (Bill) Hale.
A memorial service is planned for today, Aug. 21, at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, mourners should donate to the charity of their choosing.
Harry F. Griffith
Harry F. Griffith of Rio Verde gently passed away on August 6, 2002 surrounded by loved ones.
Mr. Griffith was born July 12, 1928 at Grosse Pointe, Mich., where he lived and worked for 17 years with the Detroit Edison Company.
He served in the U.S. Army with the occupational forces in Japan following World War II and graduated from Wayne State University with a Masters Degree in Business Administration.
During his career he held positions with IBM, Stone and Webster Consulting Co. in New York City and KN Energy in Denver, Colo.
Mr. Griffiths and his wife, B.J. took early retirement and moved to Rio Verde in 1984. Even though golf and travel were loved hobbies, he found it necessary to seek an opportunity to tell other people about this community. He obtained an Associate Broker’s license and worked for a number of years in the real estate industry – the latest association being with Russ Lyon Realty Company.
Church was always an important part of Mr. Griffith’s life, and he enjoyed singing with the choir at Rio Verde Community Church.
Mr. Griffiths is survived by his wife, one brother, two daughters, two stepsons and nine healthy and happy grandchildren.

Bud Shaffer
Frederick I. "Bud" Shaffer Jr. passed away Oct. 16, 2002 at his home in Fountain Hills.
He was born Dec. 21, 1922 in Hutchinson, Kan. He attended Hutchinson High School and Kansas University, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. On March 5, 1946, he married June Lowrey.
He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson, Kan.; he received the Kansas Distinguished Parks Commission Member award; served on the Hutchinson, Kan. Recreation Commission; the Recreate for Life Foundation; the Dillon Nature Center, Shadduck Park Community Center, Elmdale Community Center, Rice Park, Sand Hills State Park, the Wellness Center, Keller Leisure Arts Center; he earned the Silver Beaver Award after his leadership in the Boy Scouts for 25 years; he received the "Take Pride in America," "Bob Artz" and "Pioneer" awards.
He was chairman of the Kansas State Park Authority and a member of the Cultural Exchange in Russia on leisure time affairs. He served in the Army Air Force, on the NJCAA board, which brought the National Junior College Basketball Finals Tournament to Hutchinson; the American Legion; and an associate member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, June L., and four sons: Rick, Ron, Tim and John, with their families, and eight grandchildren; two sisters, Martha Chabin and Adella (Sissy) Bowden; many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Monday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.

Larry Sand
Larry Sand, 69, passed away Oct. 7, 2002.
He was born April 4, 1933 In Brooklyn, N.Y. He served two years in the Army working with the CIA in Germany during the Korean conflict.
After service he pursued his college education in Pennsylvania at Philadelphia Textile and Science.
After graduation he worked 25 years for Seneca Textile, a division of U.M.&M. He was a vice president, department head of purchasing, production, dyeing and inventory control.
His next challenge was at Carousel Curtain, where he was general plant manager. He was known as "management who fought for the rights of the worker," a rare quality in today’s business environment. When textiles went abroad he moved to Arizona to get ready for retirement, which was more than 11 years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Myrna, of 47 years; and his son, Marc, of Fountain Hills.
Contributions in his honor can be made to hospice, cancer research or Parkinson’s. Newcomer Family Mortuary of Scottsdale assisted the family.
Dr. Boris Belko
Dr. Boris Belko died Oct. 23, 2002 in Palm Springs, Calif. He was born Nov. 1, 1934 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Walter and Jennie Belko.
He had one older brother, Ivan, who shared his passion for music at a very young age.
In 1939 his family left New York to move to Glendale, Calif. until the threat of wartime separation forced their family to relocate to College Place, Wash.
In the third grade Boris found his first real love, the trumpet, and over the next several years became an outstanding musician, winning many competitions.
He moved only once from this area, during his sophomore year when he hitchhiked to La Sierra to "see the big city." He graduated from Walla Walla College in 1957 and married Sharon Spillman that same year.
Dr. Belko served as the dean of men at Maplewood Academy in Hutchinson, Minn. from 1957 to 1958, and the following year served as a ministerial intern with his father-in-law, Don Spillman.
He had his first child, a son named Bret, in 1958, and a daughter named Bobbi in 1961. In 1966, in an act of compassion, he became the legal guardian of a 15-year-old daughter, Marian Radke.
Dr. Belko began dental school at Loma Linda University in 1958 and graduated with the class of 1963. He began a practice of children’s dentistry in Riverside and continued that practice through October of 1999.
In 1983 Dr. Belko met Debbie Gates-Claycomb at an Adventist Singles Camp Meeting in the Colorado Rockies, and after a four-month and seven-day courtship he took her as his bride on Jan. 7, 1984. They resided in Riverside for the next 17 years with Debbie’s son, Lloyd, and her daughter, Kresha.
Over the next 11 years Dr. Belko traveled to Magadon, Siberia three times, Moscow twice, Kiev, Nizhniy, Norgord, St. Petersburg, Guatemala City and Mwanza, Tanzania, Africa sharing his gift of music as performed by the Belko Brass and leaving hundreds of Bibles in his wake.
He retired in 1999 and built a home near Palm Springs where he has lived for the past year.
He is survived by his loving wife and dedicated partner, Debbie, of Palm Springs; his children, Marian Wagner (Bob) of Redlands, Calif.; Bret "Buddy" Belko (Stephen) of Fountain Hills; Bobbi Belko (Casey) of Chico, Calif.; Lloyd Claycomb (Leonor) of Denver, Colo.; and Kresha Britton (Henry) of Riverside, Calif.; four grandchildren; and his friend and loving mother of his children, Sharon, of Fountain Hills.
A Celebration of Life Service for Dr. Belko was held Oct. 27 at Loma Linda University 7th Day Adventist Church, Loma Linda, Calif.

Fred DeFreitas
Fred DeFreitas, 78, passed away Oct. 28, 2002 in Scottsdale.
He was born on Nov. 6, 1923 in New York City, N.Y. He had worked in the printing industry as a lithographer.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
Mr. DeFreitas is survived by his daughter, Paula DeFreitas, Tempe; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Grogan and Cydney Grogan, both of Tempe.
Funeral services were held Nov. 1 at Green Acres Chapel of Light in Scottsdale.
Fred and Vi moved to Fountain Hills in 1982 and were among the original purchasers in the Clean-Aire subdivision. In his later years, Fred was a familiar sight as he "motored" around Fountain Hills in his electric cart.
He was affectionately called "The Mayor of Clear-Aire."
He wrote that his fondest memories were getting out of the service in 1944, marrying Vi in 1945, and his wonderful friends in the Fountain Hills – "The best people ever!"

Lila Mae Saubert
Lila Mae "Bobbie" Saubert, of Fountain Hills, formerly from McCall, Idaho and Florence, Ore., died Nov. 3, at Arizona Fountain Terrace where she has lived the past three years.
Bobbie was born Aug. 3, 1918, to Myron and Agnes Jones in Leavenworth, Wash. where she lived until she married Jack Saubert. They were married 57 years before he preceded her in death in 1995.
Survivors include two daughters, Joan (Terry) Cummings of Rio Verde and Bigfork, Mont., and Jean Saubert of Bigfork, Mont.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Jack and Bobbie were early residents of Rio Verde, building there in 1976. She was a very accomplished musician, playing the church organ, teaching music and accompanying may vocalists in the various locations the family lived in Oregon, Utah and Idaho.
Bobbie worked as a bookkeeper, and she and Jack traveled extensively after his retirement from the U.S. Forest Service. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw, Florence, Ore.
No local services are planned. Burial will be at Pacific Sunset cemetery in Florence, Ore. Funeral arrangements are being made by Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary and Florence Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley.
John Teschner
John J. Teschner of Fountain Hills passed away Nov. 8, 2002.
He was born in Chicago, Ill. on Dec. 23, 1918 and married Sue Lampos on Oct. 3, 1940. Sue preceded him in death on May 12, 2000.
A daughter, Jean Putman of Fountain Hills, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a sister, Catherine Hynes of Glen Ellen, Ill., survive him. A sister preceded him in death.
John served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World World II. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and frequently shared his WW II experiences with students at area schools.
John served two terms (1992 to 1994) as commander of VFW Post No. 4826 in Hoopeston, Ill. and as post advocate (1998 to 1999) of VFW Post No. 7507 in Fountain Hills. He also was a life member of the American Legion and a member of Fountain Hills Post No. 58.
John belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was a third degree knight.
The family requests donations to Hospice of the Valley in lieu of flowers.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, at Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills. Interment will be at the Veterans National cemetery, Phoenix.
