Harry once ran 97 yards on a punt return for a game-winning touchdown against foe Texas A&M.
After graduating with a BA in education, Harry took a bride, Stella, who was by his side for 64 years.
Harry and Stella moved to Arizona and settled in Phoenix with their three boys, Marshall, Carl and Harry Jr. Harry excelled as a teacher and was awarded teacher of the year. Later, inspired by his love of sports, Harry became an award-winning school football, track and basketball coach.
Summers off gave Harry time with his boys. Camping, hunting, fishing, working around the home and planting a bountiful vegetable garden complete with a scarecrow (to the delight of his grandchildren!) kept Harry busy.
But, part of the summer was spent returning to the family farm in Oklahoma where Harry taught his sons how to work by helping with the harvest, tending cattle and cultivating the land for future crops.
Tragedy struck in 1966 when Harry Jr. was killed in Vietnam.
But Harry and Stella were strong and had six grandchildren to continue the fishing trips with. When retirement came, Harry and Stella enjoyed an active social life, travel and square dancing with the Swinging Stars several times a week.
After Stella’s death in 1998, Harry lived happily with his son Marshall in Fountain Hills, traveling around the world and inspiring his family to live a good life as he had.
