Molly Fasthorse
Amalia "Molly" Fasthorse, 91, of the Fort McDowell Indian Community died Oct. 10, 2000 at Paradise Heights Adult Home in Scottsdale.
Born June 1, 1909, she retired as a clerical worker at a defense factory.
She was born at the Stafford mining camp outside Congress Junction, Ariz. and after her father passed away, her mother married Frank Smith. She and her family came to live at Fort McDowell.
After she finished school, her path led her to Los Angeles, Calif., where she worked at a defense factory and then for the Salvation Army, from which she retired. She returned back to Fort McDowell about 1980.
Molly Starr Fasthorse had two dreams growing up – to have her own library and then later donate her collection to a worthy facility.
She collected many fine books and tapes during her life, fulfilling her first dream, and then on May 27, 1998, she presented the collection to the Fort McDowell Library, fulfilling her second dream.
Members said at the time it was truly a generous gift from her heart.
Survivors include many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation was held Oct. 15 at the Fort McDowell Recreation Center with a service Oct. 16 at the Fort McDowell Presbyterian Church Arbor. Interment was at the Fort McDowell cemetery.
Margaret Puype
Margaret Anne "Peggy" Puype, a long-time Fountain Hills educator, passed from this life on Oct. 13, 2000 in Scottsdale.
Born Oct. 20, 1957 in Phoenix, she attended Thunderbird High School and Glendale Community College. She received her bachelor of science degree from Arizona State University and her master of arts degree from the University of Arizona.
She taught at the Marana Unified School District, the Cave Creek Unified School District and the Fountain Hills Unified School District.
She was "teacher of the year" for the Marana School District for the 1988-89 school year.
Ms. Puype was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church in Scottsdale. She taught CCD classes at several churches, most recently at St. Bernard’s. She also was the camping mom for her daughter Dani’s Girl Scout troop.
Ms. Puype is survived by her parents, George and Anne Puype of Glendale; daughter, Danielle Covey of Fountain Hills; four sisters, Sherry Aviano of Gilbert, Lisa Lawrence of Fountain Hills, Susan Pickering of Fountain Hills and Lara Puype of Wickenburg; brother, Mike Puype of Santa Anita, Calif.; two nieces, Andrea and Michelle Lawrence of Fountain Hills; and one nephew, Thomas Pickering of Fountain Hills.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. Don Lawrence, pastor of Christ’s Church and Ms. Puype’s brother-in-law, officiated the service.
A Catholic Mass Funeral will be held Oct. 18 at Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills. Fr. Thmas O’Dea will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Missionaries of Charity in honor of Mother Teresa and in memory of Ms. Puype. Donations may be sent to Missionaries of Charity, 1414 S. 17th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85007.
Patricia Smyth
Patricia Louise (Pfau) Smyth died Oct. 10, 2000. She was born June 18, 1930 in Jamestown, N.D., the third of six children born to John and Zita Pfau. The family settled in Littlefork, Minn., just outside of International Falls, Minn.
Although Pat grew up in what is routinely the coldest spot in the United States, she lived much of her adult life in the desert. She fell in love with the Arizona desert 55 years ago while visiting her grandparents and spent most of her married life in Saudi Arabia.
Pat left home at 17 to attend the Northwestern Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis, where she became a medical lab technician. After graduation, she and several friends traveled through the south, landing jobs in labs, until they reached Texas.
There, the Minnesota Yankee met Guy Smyth, an Amarillo native. They married on Oct. 6, 1951. Shortly thereafter, Guy left for Saudi Arabia to work for what was then the Arabian American Oil Company. Pat had to wait almost 18 months before the company built adequate housing for families. During that time, she gave birth to Stephen Guy Smyth in Littlefork.
The newlyweds built a life and a family in the Arabian desert. Like other Aramco wives, Pat learned to share resources – clothes for her growing family, hard-to-find fresh foods, or luxury items then unattainable in nearby desert cities. Far away from home, Pat and Guy forged strong friendships and a surrogate extended family in Ras Tanura and later, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
She gave birth to Valerie in Dhahran in 1954 and to twins Melanie and Melissa in 1963.
Pat enjoyed playing bridge, crocheting, bowling, good food and conversation and spending time at the beach in Ras Tanura.
Pat and Guy began a life-long love affair with travel – vacationing throughout the Middle and Far East and Europe.
The family moved to Scottsdale in 1970 but moved back to Saudi Arabia in 1974. Pat and Guy retired to Fountain Hills in 1988.
They traveled in the United States and cruised the Caribbean. When home, Pat loved spending time at her cabin in Pinetop and with her children and grandchildren, Merideth and Grant Smyth, Stephen, Sammy, Silas and Jamie Sprout and Ryan and Emily Bordow.
She is survived by her husband, children and grandchildren; four sisters, Maxine Thorson, of Littlefork, Minn., Phyllis Boyd, of Phoenix, Kathryn Swedback, of Scottsdale, and Dede Welling of Mesa; one brother, John Pfau, of Phoenix; and her mother-in-law, Evelyn Smyth, of Mesa.
A memorial service was held Oct. 14 at the Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills.

Lucille Davidson
Lucille Davidson (Dempsey), 78, of Scottsdale passed away Aug. 22, 2000.
She was born Jan. 28, 1922 in Canton, Ohio to Dennis and Zella (Garthwaite) Dempsey. She raised her family in Euclid, Ohio and retired from the Euclid Ohio Library system. She moved to Sagamore Hills, Ohio before coming to Fountain Hills.
Ms. Davidson is preceded in death by her brother, Walter, and her sisters, Zella McCoy and Dorothy Dempsey. She is survived by Harold, her husband of 56 years; and daughters Barbette Lobella, Deborah Zdanowicz, Claudia Irwin, Lydia Schlenkert and nine grandchildren.
Memorial services for Ms. Davidson were held at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church on Aug. 28.

Dorothy Hunnicutt
Dorothy "Dottie" Eunice Hunnicutt, 78, of Fountain Hills died Tuesday, Aug. 22, in Goodyear, Ariz.
Ms. Hunnicutt, a bookkeeper, was born in Sandy, Ore. Survivors include a sister, Lorena Dietrich; a brother, Aaron Updegrave; three daughters, Phyllis Lee, Carol Hudson and Susan Condon; a son, James Gregg; and 11 grandchildren.
Private services for Ms. Hunnicutt are to be held in Glide, Ore.
The family is suggesting memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Mary Ann Neuleib
Mary Ann Neuleib, 85, of Fountain Hills, died Aug. 25 at the Eckstein Center in Scottsdale.
Ms. Neuleib was born Jan. 20, 1915 in Winnipeg, Canada. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Ascension and a volunteer at the Mayo Clinic.
Ms. Neuleib is survived by two sons, James Phillips (Tiki) of San Francisco and Donald L. Phillips of Fountain Hills; two daughters, Patricia Ann Loll (Paul) of Battle Lake, Minn. and Geraldine Martino, Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A funeral Mass for Ms. Neuleib was held on Monday, Aug. 28 at Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills. Interment is at Riverside cemetery, Longville, Minn.
James Treptow
James E. Treptow, 72, of Fountain Hills died Aug. 26, 2000, the date of his 50th wedding anniversary.
Born March 28, 1928 in Fon du Lac, Wis., Mr. Treptow was an Arizona resident since 1959 and had lived in Fountain Hills since 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, Jeff of Phoenix and Gary of Mesa; daughter and son-in-law, Debi and Kevin Kealey; and grandchildren, Christopher and Heidi Ann Treptow and Sean and Nicole Kealey.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, with Pastor Scott Von Lanken of Fountain Hills Assembly of God officiating at Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale.
Janet E. Alford
Janet Elizabeth Alford, 85, of Fountain Hills died Tuesday, Dec. 26.
Mrs. Alford was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 17, 1915. She had lived in Fountain Hills the last seven years, moving from Bolinas, Calif.
Survivors include her husband, Bill; two daughters, Shireen Rhoades of Fountain Hills and Diane Penn of Camino, Calif.; two sons, Casey Alford of Apache Junction and Mickey Alford of Mesa; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Jan touched the lives of so many and the family is blessed with unforgettable treasured memories. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Stanley Pawlak
In loving memory of our father, Stanley C. Pawlak, 92, who was born Nov. 8, 1908 and died Jan. 6, 2001.
Born In Cicero, Ill., he worked for 45 years at Western Electric as a machinist. Mr. Pawlak had lived in Fountain Hills for the past 10 years.
Survivors include his children, Leonard Pawlak and Barbara Struna of Fountain Hills and James Pawlak of Wisconsin; grandchildren, Richard, Eileen, Laurie and John; and great-grandchildren, Jenna, Jacob and Joshua of Fountain Hills.
A 10 a.m. memorial mass will be said at Church of the Ascension Friday, Jan. 12. Burial will be in the Chicago area.

Ruth L. Van Damme
Ruth L. Van Damme, 72, of Fountain Hills, died Jan. 7 at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn.
Mrs. Van Damme was born on March 26, 1928 in Morris, Ill. She was a retired purchasing agent for an insurance company.
Her husband, George Van Damme, also of Fountain Hills; daughter Donna Nelson; son David Van Damme; sister Louise Evans; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, survive her.
There will be a visitation on Thursday, Jan. 11 from 4 to 5 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.
A service will be held on Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, located at 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd.

William J. Westerlage
William J. Westerlage, 84, of Fountain Hills, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.
Mr. Westerlage was born on Nov. 30, 1916 in La Marque, Texas. He was a comptroller in the oil and gas industry and served in the U.S. Army in World War II.
His wife, Marjorie Westerlage of Fountain Hills; daughter Terri Crews of Mesa; brother Henry W. Westerlage of Shreveport, La. and his granddaughter Laura Crews survive him.
A memorial service was held Monday, Jan. 8 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

John L. King
John L. King, 74, of Fountain Hills died Jan. 9, 2001 at his Fountain Hills residence.
Mr. King was born on Jan. 23, 1926 in London, England. He worked as a reinsurance broker for property and casualty insurance during his career, which began at Lloyd’s of London before he and his wife, Vivien, moved to Montreal, Canada in 1955.
He attended the Minchenden School in Southgate, London and served in the Royal Air Force as a navigator during World War II.
Mr. King is survived by his wife, Vivien of Fountain Hills; daughter, Allison (Dan) Olinger of Carrollton, Texas; Sally Baribault (Rey) of Coppell, Texas; four grandchildren, Luke and Megan Olinger and Sarah and Benjamin Baribault; his niece Laura (Michael) Aira of Ascot, England and grand-nephews Alexander and Nicholas Aira of Ascot, England.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 13, at Christ’s Church of Fountain Hills.

Judy P. Dobbs
Judy P. Dobbs, 58, of Fountain Hills died Jan. 15, 2001 in Fountain Hills.
Mrs. Dobbs was born on April 17, 1942 in Monroe, Mich. and was a homemaker.
Husband Ken; mother Dorothy Daniels of Tennessee; son Kenneth D. Dobbs of Michigan; daughters Kristine Falkenberg of Michigan and Kandy Miracle of Kentucky; brother David Daniels of Tennessee and six grandchildren survive her.
All services will be held in Michigan.
Dorothy Bevis
Dorothy Higgs Bevis, 81, a former Fountain Hills resident, died Jan. 15, 2001 at her home in Colorado Springs, Colo.
She was born Nov. 29, 1919 in Somerville, Tenn. to John and Sallie (Earnhardt) Higgs. Mrs. Bevis was a homemaker and retired secretary.
Survivors include her husband, "Biff" Bevis; daughter, Terry Jones; sister, Elizabeth Croft; and one grandson. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Tempel.
