Constance W. McCalmont
Constance W. McCalmont, 69, of Fountain Hills, passed away on Oct. 12. A parishioner at Church of the Ascension, McCalmont was born Feb. 12, 1934, Perryopolis, Penn.
She is survived by her husband, William; sons Charles of Fountain Hills, Bill (Julia) of Scottsdale, David (Lisa) of Glendale and Jim (Kari) of Anthem.
McCalmont is also survived by a daughter, Susan Rogers (Steve) of Scottsdale; mother Ida P. White of Connellsville, Penn.; brother Robert A. White (Mary) of Springfield, Va.; sisters Kathryn Satterwhite (Len) of Greenville, Penn. and Carole Swartz (Ted) of Lawrence, Kan.; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation was Oct. 14, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary with a service planned for Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. at Church of the Ascension, located at 12615 E. Fountain Hills Blvd. Interment will take place at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.

Elizabeth Huebert
Elizabeth Koop Huebert, who empowered 170 of her family by leading the way out of Russia to freedom during the battle of Stalingrad, died Sept. 6, 2003 in Winnipeg, Canada.
She is immortalized as one of the most amazing heroines to have emerged from Russia during that time in a book published by Trafford, Canada: I Heard My People Cry, One Family’s Escape from Russia, by Fountain Hills author Elizabeth Lenci-Downs, a friend of the family.
Mrs. Huebert’s daughter, Louise Huebert Gerig, widow of art connoisseur Virgil Gerig of Scottsdale, is now in Winnipeg, returning to winter and stay with friends in Fountain Hills.
Elizabeth Koop Huebert was abandoned at the age of seven in the siege of Taganrog, Russia, during the Great Russian Revolution. She survived Ukrainian civil wars and Stalin’s purges to empower her people and save her children, carrying them out of Russia and away from Hitler during World War II.
All of Mrs. Huebert’s children were at her bedside when she passed away.

Olaf Skaar
Olaf Alfred Skaar, 77, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 6, 2003 at his residence.
Born Sept. 1, 1926 in Brooklyn, N.Y., he worked as a mechanical engineer for Boeing in Mesa and Lockheed in Burbank, Calif. His hobbies included fishing and photography.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran from World War II who worked as a machinist.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Skaar of Fountain Hills; sister, Sonja Fredricksen of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Lillian Torkelsen of Pawcatuck, Conn.; five nieces; one nephew; and many aunts, uncles and cousins in Norway.
All services were held in Ohio. Interment was at Miami Memorial Park in Covington, Ohio.
John P. Andreasen
John Phillip Andreasen, a 20-year winter resident of Fountain Hills, died March 15, 2004 at Hospice of the Valley Eckstein Center, Scottsdale.
John and wife Donna are also Bloomington, Minn. residents. He is also survived by four children and four grandchildren.
Services will take place Monday, March 22, in Minneapolis, Minn.
Brainerd D. Crofoot
Brainerd Daniel Crofoot passed away Saturday, March 13, 2004. He was born in Lake Hendricks Township, Brookings County, S.D. where he grew up on his father’s farm with four brothers and two sisters.
At age 22 he entered the military serving in both World War II and the Korean War. After 20 years of service, Major Crofoot retired from the Army and worked as an insurance adjuster for the next 15 years.
He enjoyed his membership in Toastmasters International. Golf was one of his favorite pastimes. After fully retiring he moved to Arizona where the rugged mountains and beautiful desert prompted him to call his home in Fountain Hills Shangri-la.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Elaine Wright, three brothers, Ted, Herman and Reuben, and one sister, Selma.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters, Bonnie Klemp and Melanie Allen; Grandson Ian Klemp; granddaughters Shelly Graves and Robyn Klemp; stepchildren Scott, Cindy, Steve and Mike; step grandchildren, Jessica, Jackie, Alec, Zach, Walter, Sierra, Tayler, Howie, Evan, Logan, Sophia; a sister Lillian Johnston and brother Grant Crofoot.
A service of remembrance for family and friends will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 Saguaro Blvd. Fountain Hills.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Research. His loved ones and friends will greatly miss his kind spirit and warm heart.
Donald G. Boos
Donald G. Boos died Saturday, March 13, 2004 at Fountain View Village in Fountain Hills. He was 81.
Mr. Boos was born July 21, 1922 in Buffalo, N.Y. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, and graduated from Villanova University with a degree in economics. He had a career as a sales representative for transportation companies.
Mr. Boos social and professional memberships included the Tan Tara Country Club, the Transportation Club of Buffalo, N.Y., a 26-year member of the American Philatelic Society, Fountain Hills American Legion Post 58 and Fountain Hills VFW Post 7507. He was a volunteer at the Fountain Hills Library and a golf ranger at Fountain Hills Desert Canyon Golf Club. He was an avid golfer and bowler.
Mr. Boos is survived by his wife Lillian Boos, and daughter Lori Boos, both of Fountain Hills.
A memorial service for Mr. Boos will be held Saturday, March 20, at 3 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 Saguaro Blvd., Fountain Hills.

Wayne M. Etter
Wayne M. Etter, 84, of Rio Verde died March 12, at the Eckstein Center in Scottsdale.
Mr. Etter was born Feb. 11, 1920 in Brownton, Minn. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and flew as a commercial airline pilot.
Mr. Etter is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Rio Verde; a daughter, Jean Palmer (Gary) of Henderson, Nev.; and two grandchildren, Evan and Alan Palmer. He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Etter in 2001.
Interment will be a Big Fork cemetery, Big Fork, Mont.
Winthrop ‘Red’ Bryan
Winthrop “Red” Bryan, 84, of Fountain Hills died April 29, 2001 at Mayo Clinic Hospital.
Born Dec. 18, 1916 in St. Paul, Minn., Mr. Bryan was president of Bryan Rock Mining Company. He also was a member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Bryan of Fountain Hills; son, Bill Bryan (Phyllis) of Prior Lake, Minn.; daughter, Nancy Doheny (Michael) of Lakeville, Minn.; brother, Phil Bryan of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Margo Anderson of Rapid City, S.D. and Rhoda Bennett of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Michael Doheny of Farmington, Minn. and Matt and Eric Bryan of Prior Lake.
A memorial service will be held in Burnsville, Minn.

June Eileen Dietrich
June Eileen Dietrich, 79, of Fountain Hills passed away on March 29, 2004, at Fountain View Village Skilled Nursing in Fountain Hills.
Mrs. Dietrich, a school secretary, was born on Oct. 11, 1924, in Hammond, Ind.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Dean Dietrich, of Fountain Hills; her son, Ronald Dean Dietrich of Gaithersburg, Md.; her daughter, Susan Elaine Marrs, of South Lake Tahoe, Nev. as well as by two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 3, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

Sherry L. Furdiga
Sherry L. Furdiga, 61, of Phoenix, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with ALS on March 27, 2004 at home with her loving husband holding her hands and her three children by her side.
She was born in Meadeville, PA on June 10, 1942. She married Leon Furdiga on Nov. 9, 1968 and together they raised three children. In November 1977, Sherry and Leon moved to Fountain Hills, AZ to begin their life in the Southwest. She was a homemaker and an active member of the First Baptist Church of Fountain Hills.
All who encountered Sherry will remember her warm personality, loving and generous nature, infectious laugh and her ability to make one feel welcome.
A devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, she will be missed by all. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Leon Furdiga, three children, Pamela Kuchan (Bill) of Prescott, AZ; Shawn (Jerrie) Furdiga of Cave Cree, AZ; and Dawn Furdiga of Los Angeles, CA. Three grandchildren, Ryan and Justin Kuchan, and Mason Furdiga. Her father, Stanley Shea, and brother Donald (Nancy) Shea of Meadville, PA. A loving niece, Wendy (Kevin) Oliver of St. Louis, MO. She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 3 at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church of Fountain Hills, 10215 N. Saguaro Blvd. in Fountain Hills.

Hammand (Ham) Hauck
Hammand (Ham) Hauck, 81, of Fountain Hills died March 29, 2004.
Hauck was born on March 17, 1923 in Philadelphia, Penn.
During WWII he served in the Army Signal Corp in Iran. Upon return he married Jean Feb. 10, 1945.
Hauck worked for Eastman Kodak in Rochester, N.Y. for 40 years.
Upon retirement he moved to Fountain Hills 23 years ago. He so enjoyed Fountain Hills including the golf and the area.
He is survived by his wife Jean, son Bruce Hauck (Judy), daughter Nancy Wheeler (Ron) five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Services were at Church of the Ascension Tuesday, March 30.

Jeffrey W. Minich
Jeffrey W. Minich, 49, of Fountain Hills passed away on March 27, 2004. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Oct. 30, 1954.
Mr. Minich, an operations manager for Bank of America, was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mr. Minich is survived by his parents, Michael and Lois Minich of Fountain Hills; his brother, Michael Minich of Livonia Mich.; and nephews Jason and Scott Minich, also of Livonia.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 31, from 4 to 6 p.m., with scripture service at 5:30 p.m., at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Interment will follow at Glen Eden cemetery in Livonia, Mich.

Marie J. Perini
Marie J. Perini, 86, passed away on March 19, 2004. Mrs. Perini was born Feb. 19, 1918.
She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Lido, who was also a neighbor of hers for 12 years in Corona, N.Y.
Mrs. Perini is also survived by her daughter Linda Ferington and son-in-law James Ferington as well as granddaughter Natalie Towne. Son Raymond, daughter-in-law Carole, grandson Nicolas and granddaughter Joanna also survive her.
Although physically small, Marie was a giant in love and understanding. Anyone who met her never forgot her smile of love and understanding.
Marie didn’t have an easy life. She had to quit high school in the first year because the depression caused her father to lose his job as a construction worker on the Empire State Building. She had to go to work to help support the family.
At the death of her father at the age of 48, being new in the social security system, the family was not eligible for any benefits. This made it even more urgent that she continued to work and she sacrificed her education to support her family.
By 1942, a younger sister, Molly, was married and her younger brother, Nicholas, reached working age, relieving Marie of the family burden.
In 1942, Lido and Marie were married. They had little money but they both worked until the children came and then Marie stayed home to raise the children. It was never a rich family but it was a family surrounded by love.
Through her wise money management, the family finally achieved middle-income status. It was always and is today a family full of love for one another and that is the richness of their lives.
She now goes to rest leaving a void that cannot be filled except that we have the assurance that this love of ours will continue beyond the grave and into eternity. This seed of love was planted in New York City and extended to Arizona and will go beyond the grave and into eternity.
This is from Lido Honey, I do not what lies beyond the grave but I do know that you are waiting for me preparing my place beside you. In that promised land that the good Lord has promised awaits us in the heavens.

Margaret Duff
Margaret K. Duff, 87, passed away in Taos, New Mexico, on April 25, 2003. Born in Walton, Ind. on Jan. 4, 1916, she was a 1937 graduate of Butler University with a B.A. in English literature.
In 1966 she earned a Master of Library Science from Case Western Reserve University. She also studied painting, sculpting and drawing at Cleveland Institute of Art.
Music was always of great importance to Margaret. At the age of 5 she began taking violin lessons. She toured Indiana with her brother Hal, sister Mary and mother as a musical family group, the Kapp Classical Quartet, and later studied at Jordan Conservatory (now Butler University) in Indianapolis.
On Oct. 26, 1940 she married Cloyd E. Duff, timpanist of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. In 1942 they moved to Cleveland where for the next 39 years Cloyd was principal timpanist with the Cleveland Orchestra.
Married for 59 glorious years, they lived in Cleveland until their retirements in 1981. Following retirement, they divided their time between their homes in Fountain Hills, Ariz. and Livermore, Colo. After Cloyd’s death in March 2000, Margaret moved to Taos, N.M., to be near her daughter, Barbara, and son-in-law, Andrew Flack.
Margaret worked in the Cuyahoga County Public Library in Cleveland, Ohio, as a children’s librarian in the Solon Branch, South Euclid and Gates Mills from 1966-1981. She developed and directed the Puppet Center from 1975-1981 and gave workshops, demonstrations and shows on puppeteering throughout the state.
Margaret also gained a reputation as children’s book author. Under the name Maggie Duff, she wrote and published four children’s books: Johnny and His Drum, Walck, 1972, Rum Pum Pum: A Folk Tale from India, Macmillan, 1978; The Princess and the Pumpkin: Adapted from a Majorcan Tale, Macmillan, 1980; and Dancing Turtle, Macmillan, 1981.
Rum Pum Pum and The Princess and the Pumpkin were on the "best books" list issued by the New York Public Library system. Rum Pum Pum was named a best book of 1978 by the School Library Journal and has been printed in foreign editions. In 1979, she created and performed Rum Pum Pum, a puppet play, set to Poulenc’s Carnival of Animals, for the Cleveland Orchestra Key Concerts. A Japanese stage production of Rum Pum Pum is currently touring in Japan.
Margaret was also an accomplished artist and exhibited paintings and sculptures in Cleveland, Indiana, and Arizona, including juried shows at Cleveland Museum of Art, John Herron Art Museum in Indiana and the 59th annual exhibition of the Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers Society of Washington, D.C. Her paintings are in public and private collections around the country.
She was a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Women’s Committee, 1960–65; the Cleveland Institute of Music Women’s Committee, 1970-76; a member of the American Library Association; International Board on Books for Young People; Mu Phi Epsilon, Pi Beta Phi and was elected to the prestigious Caldecott Committee for 1981.
She was listed in Who’s Who of American Women, 1982, the Sixth Book of Junior Authors and Illustrators, and Something about an Author, Vol. 37.
She is survived by daughter Barbara and husband Andrew Flack, living in Taos, N.M.; and son Jonathan and wife Joan-Marie, living in Atlanta, Ga.; and sister Mary Allton, living in Hawaii.
