Susan Yonan
Susan M. Yonan, 94, of Fountain Hills died April 9, 1998 at Scottsdale's Shadow Mountain Healthcare.
Born Jan. 10, 1904 in Baz, Turkey, Mrs. Yonan was a homemaker.
Survivors include her daughter, Janet Kepka of Fountain Hills; grandchildren, Susan Bury of Fountain Hills and James Kepka of Chicago; and three great-grandchildren.
Lois Sturgeon
Lois Marie Sturgeon passed away at her home Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, following a two-year battle with cancer.
Mrs. Sturgeon and her husband of 55 years, William, built their retirement home in Fountain Hills in 1986 on Ruskin Lane.
Mrs. Sturgeon was born May 8, 1924 in Tallmadge Township, Ottawa County, Michigan. She wed William Sturgeon on Dec. 22, 1943, just before he was shipped to Europe in the U.S. Army.
Together they raised four children. Diane Masucci resides in Monroe, N.Y. David Sturgeon lives in Fountain Hills. Mark and Todd Sturgeon both reside in Scottsdale.
Mrs. Sturgeon has seven grandchildren — Mrs. Lisa Griffiths of West Chester, Pa., Mrs. Tina Mortiz of Salt Lake City, Robert Masucci attending New York State University in Plattsburg, Brent Masucci attending Michigan State University, Mindy Masucci of Monroe, N.Y., Ryan Sturgeon attending Fountain Hills High School and Brett Sturgeon attending Fountain Hills Middle School.
Mrs. Sturgeon also is survived by her sister Alice Griesbach, who lives in Fountain Hills with her husband Melbourne. Mr. and Mrs. Griesbach attend Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, and services will be held there on Thursday, Jan. 14, at 3 p.m.
Memorial contributions should be donated to Christ the King Lutheran Church, 10030 N. 32nd Street, Phoenix.
Bob Waldrop
Bob Waldrop, 71, of Fountain Hills died Jan. 10, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.
Born April 17, 1927 in Shawnee, Okla., Mr. Waldrop was retired from a career in chemical sales. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Waldrop was an active member of The Club and the Fountain Hills Square Club.
Visitation was held Jan. 12. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 13, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd.
Survivors include his wife, Pat, of Fountain Hills; daughter, Diana Latino, of Annandale, N.J.; sons, Steven Waldrop of Chicago and Stanley Waldrop of Scottsdale; sister, Elizabeth Rhodes, of Chambersburg, Pa.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Hospice Family Care, 1125 E. Southern, Mesa, AZ 85204, Attn: Foundation.
Donald Siegelen
Donald Siegelen, 72, a 20-year resident of Fountain Hills, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999.
Mr. Siegelen was a military veteran, was a retired engineer from the railroad and at one time owned Scottsdale Exterminating.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gail; daughters, Donna Manchester of Kansas City and Diana Fritz of Fountain Hills; son, Don Siegelen Jr. of Fountain Hills; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Delbruegge.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Scottsdale Healthcare Hospice. Green Acres Mortuary of Scottsdale handled the arrangements. Visitation was Jan. 12, but a funeral service will be held at Green Acres at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 13.
Chester Zralka
Chester C. Zralka, 75, died Jan. 4, 1999, a resident of Fountain Hills for the past 15 years.
Mr. Zralka was the beloved husband of Rita, who survives him; and loving father of three children — Pamela Bolton (husband Keith), Deborah Kucera (husband William) and Gregory (wife Sparrow); eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He also is survived by a sister, Charlotte September of Fountain Hills; and a brother, Albert, of Sonoma, Calif.
Mr. Zralka was born July 9, 1923 in Chicago, Ill. He served in World War II and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Zralka owned and operated C.R. Way Furniture store in Chicago.
A memorial service was held at Church of the Ascension Jan. 9.
Delbert Harry
Delbert "Beaver" Harry, 60, a resident of the Fort McDowell Indian community, died Friday, Jan. 22, at Plaza Healthcare in Scottsdale.
Mr. Harry was born Feb. 3, 1938 in Phoenix and was a resident of Fort McDowell. He was an ironwork welder by trade.
Mr. Harry was a 1955 graduate of Phoenix Indian School and served in the U.S. Navy. He was one of the builders of the Presbyterian Church Arbor at Fort McDowell.
Mr. Harry is survived by two daughters, Allyson Harry of Fort McDowell and Cynthia Harry of California; one brother Perry Harry of Fort McDowell; one sister, Letitia Harry of Fort McDowell; and three grandsons, Vincent George, Dion Isaac and Louis Harry.
Services for Delbert Harry were held Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Fort McDowell Presbyterian Church Arbor.
Robert Pollock
Robert Pollock, 70, of Fountain Hills died Jan. 19, 1999.
Born Nov. 12, 1928 in Seneca, Mo., Mr. Pollock worked in the automobile manufacturing industry as a public affairs director before retiring to Fountain Hills.
A graduate of the University of Missouri in 1950, Mr. Pollock was active during his time in Fountain Hills.
He was a former board member of the Noon Kiwanis Club and served as a trustee on the Road District Board. An honorary member of The Club, Mr. Pollock served as secretary and newsletter editor for the organization.
He also was a member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church. His favorite saying was, "Do something especially nice for someone else today."
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Pauline Pollock; son, Robert D. Pollock of Branson, Mo.; daughter, Melinda K. Pollock of Chandler; two grandchildren, Robert John and Gregory Michael Pollock; and two sisters, Rosalee Dutton of Moraga, Calif. and Flora Kupchin of Walnut Creek, Calif.

Henry Kelley
Henry Kelley, 54, of Fountain Hills died Jan. 20, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.
He was born March 5, 1944 in Boston, Mass., but Mr. Kelley grew up in Pasadena, Calif. He was retired from IBM after a 27-year career, and he was an Army veteran. Mr. Kelley also was a member of the Pasadena Elks Lodge No. 672.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Fountain Hills; step-daughter, Linda Branham of Bristol, Va.; stepson, Michael Puglise of Nashville, Tenn.; mother, Henriette Dail of Pasadena; father, Herbert Kelley of Vallejo, Calif.; brother Charles Dail of Burbank, Calif; three grandchildren; and one nephew.
No services are planned. Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary handled the arrangements.
Wilfred Passow
Wilfred "Wil" Henry Passow of Fountain Hills, a renowned Arizona outdoorsman, active volunteer and teacher, died Jan. 21, 1999.
A World War II veteran who served in the Navy, Mr. Passow received his B.S. degree from Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, and moved west in 1959 at age 34 with his wife and two children, finishing the Master Business and Management Program at Arizona State University while working for Motorola.
He was an active member of Voice of Motorola Toastmasters for over 20 years, receiving numerous awards for his leadership and public speaking. Through Rio Salado Community College, he taught business and public speaking, and he was involved in Junior Achievement in the Scottsdale schools.
He was a retiree from Motorola's Purchasing Department.
Perhaps his greatest passion was the experience and preservation of the world's natural heritage. He was a YMCA Volunteer of the Year for his key role in founding of the International Y-Trekker Adult Hiking Group in 1983, which has taken hikers all over the world, including the Alps, New Zealand, a coast-to-coast walk across England and an annual rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike.
He was named volunteer of the year by the Arizona Trail Association for his work in helping to establish, build and maintain the cross-state trail that is now nearing completion. He was an active member of the Arizona Historical Trail Association.
Other awards included the national Vibram/National Hiking Association Volunteer of the Year for 1998 and the Presidential Sports Award in 1983.
Mr. Passow believed that to facilitate an interest in preservation, it was important to create an experience of the backcountry. Through those ideals, he was active in the Sierra Club, held many of the offices through the years, including president of the Grand Canyon chapter.
Through the Sierra Club he lobbied on behalf of an airplane-free Grand Canyon, he led hikes and service trips nationally, and he taught local backpacking classes through which inner-city kids were able to experience the Superstition backcountry.
He celebrated his 70th birthday in 1994 with a party at the top of Camelback Mountain, which he climbed three times a week for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, who resides in Fountain Hills; his daughters Karen Nixon (San Diego) and Robyn Fisher (Olympia, Wash.) and son David Passow (Virginia Beach, Va.); his four grandchildren, Sandi (Gilbert), Jacob, Jordyn and Jamie (Olympia); and his great-granddaughter Megan (Gilbert); and also by sisters Betty Evans, Iva George and Irene Foley (Minnesota) and Lois (Wisconsin), and brothers Robert (Montana) and Armond (Illinois).
He also is survived by hundreds, perhaps thousands, whose lives were touched and enriched by his wisdom and his love of the earth and walking it with boots on one's feet and a pack on one's back.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Green Acres Chapel of Light.

Anne Canny
Anne L. Canny, 82, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 29, 1997.
Born July 27, 1915 in Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Canny was a homemaker. She also was a member of Church of the Ascension and a former member of St. Joseph parish in Springfield, Ill.
Survivors include her husband, Edward B. Canny of Fountain Hils; sons, John M. and Edward P. Canny of Springfield, Ill.; daughters, Nancy Lockhart of Minneapolis, Minn., Ginny Meinen of Baldwin City, Kan. and Mary Campbell of Mesa; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial mass was held Saturday, Nov. 1, at Church of the Ascension. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.
Della Harrison
Della Harrison, 47, of the Fort McDowell Indian Reservation died Oct. 31 at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital North.
Born Oct. 24, 1950 in Phoenix, Mrs. Harrison was employed as a housekeeper by various resorts throughout the valley.
She is survived by two sons, Jesse of Fort McDowell, and Dennis Kaiser of California; one daughter, Dawn Kaiser, who lives in California; two sisters, Joselina Green and Lucinda Denny, of Fort McDowell; and one grandchild.
A visitation will be held today at 8 a.m. at the Fort McDowell Arbor, followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the Fort McDowell cemetery.

Dr. James Schneider
Dr. James A. Schneider, 73, of Fountain Hills died July 25, 1998 at Desert Samaritan Care Center in Mesa.
Born March 29, 1925 in Brookfield, Ill., Dr. Schneider received his training as a radiologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He practiced in Oregon and the Middle East. He retired four years ago to Fountain Hills.
Dr. Schneider also was a U.S. Army veteran from World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Margot Schneider of Fountain Hills; son, Joseph Schneider and wife Jenean; daughter, Paula Johnson; step-son, Christian Mrozek; brother, Don Schneider; grandson, Bret Lindholm; nieces and nephews and many friends and colleagues.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.

Joseph P. Coyne
Joseph P. Coyne, 59, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 11, at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea hospital.
Mr. Coyne was born April 18, 1944 in Bridgeport, Conn. He had a career as a banker and was an avid golfer.
Mr. Coyne is survived by his wife, Diana, of Fountain Hills; a brother, Kevin Coyne, of Shelton, Conn.; a sister, Catherine Schulman of Taramac, Fla.; and other extended family members and friends too numerous to mention.
A memorial service for Mr. Coyne will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 Saguaro Blvd. in Fountain Hills.

Stephen Hnatt
Stephen Robert Hnatt recently of Fountain Hills, Ariz., died at his home in Flagstaff, Ariz., on July 19, 2003.
Stephen was born in Chicago, Ill. to Stephen John Hnatt and Irene Rose Cybulski on Aug. 27, 1936. His parents and a brother, Bill, preceded him in death.
Stephen served in the Korean War from 1953 to 1956 with the United States Marine Corps. After the military he became a police officer for the City of La Grange, Ill. In 1960 he worked as a narcotic agent for the U.S. Bureau of Narcotics and later as narcotic inspector for the Illinois State Division of Narcotic Control. Stephen worked as special agent for the American Insurance Association, Fraud and Arson Bureau until 1970.
At that time he became employed by the U.S. Treasury Department as Resident Agent in Charge (RAC) with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) in Madison, Wis., and later Des Moines, Iowa, where he met Janice Leonard Cooper (Steve and Janice would share 23 wonderful and precious years.).
Stephen and Janice moved to Kansas City, Mo., where Steve assumed the position as RAC for BATF. Several years later they moved to Huntington Beach, Calif., where Stephen continued his career with BATF in Los Angeles. Steven was a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators and the California Conference of Arson Investigators.
Stephen retired from BATF in January, 1988 and upon his retirement was awarded the esteemed Albert Gallatin Award for service by the Secretary of the Treasury.
His retirement was only temporary as one day later he embarked on a new career with American Background Investigations and later as Security Consultant with AMSEC International of Winchester, Va., from 1993 until his death.
During his second career, Stephen and Janice moved to Fountain Hills in 1995 and after being five-year summer residents of Flagstaff decided to make Flagstaff their permanent home.
Stephen loved the tall pines, clean air, easy pace and small town atmosphere of Flagstaff. He truly loved their lives together and had no regrets. Steve was a trusted confidant, greatly respected by his peers and those who knew him will never forget his quick wit.
Stephen was at home at the time of his death with his loving wife and dearest friend, Janice, along with children Kelly Hnant of New York, Kathy Harmon of Simi Valley, Calif., and Stephen J. Hnatt of New York and stepson Scott Cooper of Cave Creek, Ariz. The children’s spouses, his grandson and friends were also in attendance.
A brother, Robert Hnatt of Carpentersville, Ill., also survives Stephen, as do Janice’s parents, Henry and Audrey Leonard of Manchester, Iowa who loved Stephen as their own son.
Stephen requested those who knew and loved him get together to celebrate and share memories of all the wonderful times they spent together; therefore no formal memorial was held. Norval Owens Mortuary handled arrangements for his cremation.
Janice, the children, friends and acquaintances miss Stephen a great deal and he shall forever hold a special place in their hearts and minds.
