Charles J. Buel
Brigadier General Charles J. Buel, U.S. Army, retired, died Friday, March 15, at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix after undergoing surgery for an aortic aneurysm. He was 68-years-old and lived in Fountain Hills.
Gen. Buel retired from the Army in 1968. He held a variety of command and staff positions, culminating with his assignment as the Defense and Army Attache to Mexico, Defense Intelligence Agency, with duty in Mexico City.
Other key assignments included Commander, U.S. Army Field Artillery Training Center, Fort Sill, Okla.; Systems Manager, Multiple Launch Rocket System, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Monroe, Va.; staff officer in the Security Assistance Division in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, the Pentagon; Commander, Second Battalion, Second Field Artillery, Fort Sill; Joint Plans and Operations Officer, U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group, Dominican Republic and the Advisor to the Republic of Vietnam Army, Vietnam.
Gen Buel was born in Washington, Miss., the son of James W. and Olga A. Buel. He graduated in 1956 from the University of Missouri where he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Field Artillery and where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. He also had a Bachelor of Science degree in Military Science from the University of Maryland and a Master of Arts degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida.
His military education included graduation from the Field Artillery advanced course at Fort Sill; the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; the National War College at Fort McNair and the Foreign Service Institute of Washington, D.C. He was a Latin American Foreign Area Specialist.
Awards and decorations Gen. Buel received included the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Serice Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry (with palm), the Meritorious Military Medal (Mexico); the Parachutist Badge and the Army General Staff Badge.
Gen Buel was a passionate runner and completed many marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 1992. After retiring, he served in several community organizations helping to organize the Mount Scott, Okla. chapter of Kiwanis International and serving last year as the president of the Retired Officers Association in Mesa. He was a member of the Military Order of World Wars and the National Association for Uniformed Services.
Gen. Buel is survived by his loving wife, Nancy of Fountain Hills; their three devoted children Jeffrey A Buel of Scottsdale, Dr. Jessie Ann Buel, D.V.M., of Austin, Texas and Julie Lee Butner of Fort Worth, Texas; son-in-law Gregory W. Butner; daughter-in-law Nancy Lee Buel; loving sister Ruth Ernst of Des Moines, Iowa; brother Robert W. Buel of St. Louis Mo. and adoring grandson, Jeffrey Alexander Buel, Jr.
Clarabell F. Pineda
Clarabell F. Pineda, a Fort McDowell resident, died March 19, 2002 at Fort McDowell. She was 41.
Ms. Pineda was born Sept. 3, 1960 in Phoenix. She was a homemaker and member of the Fort McDowell Presbyterian Church.
Her mother, Susanna Wathogoma, boyfriend Johnny Murphy, sons Antonio, Lupe and Jesse Pineda, and brother Anthony Wathogoma (Joanne), all of Fort McDowell, as well as sisters Isabelle and Patricia Wathogoma and grandchildren Dorian and Antonio Pineda Jr., survive her.
A visitation was held Friday, March 22, at the family residence and the service was Saturday, March 23, at the Fort McDowell Presbyterian Church Arbor. Ms. Pineda was buried at the Fort McDowell cemetery.
Richard E. Felts
Richard Edwin Felts of Fountain Hills, formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away Jan. 19 surrounded by his family.
Born Dec. 12, 1917 in Fort Wayne, Ind., the son of the late Fern and Charles Felts, he is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen, daughters Jenny (Lynn) Moore, Judy (Tom) Arnold and son Jeffrey (Donna) Felts, all of Cincinnati, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Felts was retired in 1985 as the president of the Hamilton Mutual Insurance Company of Cincinnati and moved to Fountain Hills that same year. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Desert Canyon Mens’ Golf Association. He also enjoyed travel, photography and mentoring at Four Peaks Elementary School.
He was a member of the Mother Church – the First Church of Christ Science, Boston, Mass.
Services will be today, Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

Jack Lawrence
Jack Lawrence, 69, of Fountain Hills died Jan. 17, 2002.
Born Feb. 19, 1932 in New York City, he was a graduate of the University of Connecticut, served in the U.S. Army and was a regional manager for the Ridge Tool Co.
Mr. Lawrence was a member of The Men’s Club, the Noon Kiwanis Club and volunteered for Home Delivered Meals as well as the American Red Cross.
Survivors include his wife, Jan, of Fountain Hills; daughters, Terri Bowen of East Aurora, N.Y., Gayle Perl of Moon Township, Pa.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Jan. 19, 2002 at Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills.
Lois Allen
Lois Helen Allen, 73, of Fountain Hills died Feb. 25, 2002 in Scottsdale.
Born Jan. 5, 1929 in Midlothian, Ill., Mrs. Allen worked as an office manager in retail sales.
She was a member of Four Peaks Community Church and was involved with the community Bible study at First Baptist Church in Fountain Hills.
Survivors include her daughter, Lenore Babka (Larry) of Scottsdale; brothers, Bob, Ray, Lee, Larry and Jim; sisters, Betty, Phillis and Delores; grandchild, Kimberly Sarmento (Steve) of Phoenix; and one great-grandchild, Hannah Sarmento.
Visitation was held March 1 followed by funeral services at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Interment was at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, 2929 S. 48th Street, Tempe, AZ 85282.
Frances Russo
Family and friends will celebrate a memorial Mass for Frances Russo, who passed away on Feb. 9, 2002.
The Mass will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 8, at the Church of the Ascension.
Richard Peterson
Richard F. Peterson, 83, of Rio Verde passed away Sunday, March 10, 2002.
Born on Dec. 27, 1918 in Duluth, Minn., he graduated from Central High School and from Drake University in Iowa.
He was in the Air Force as an air operations specialist in the Pacific Theater.
His business career was in industrial relations for the Twin City and later the Connecticut hospital associations. He was a guest lecturer in Yale University master’s degree program for hospital administrators.
In personnel at Erie Mining Co. in Minnesota, he became the first mayor of Hoyt Lakes.
Survivors include his wife since 1943, Hazel; a daughter, Sue Engle (Tommy); two sons, Del (Gloria) and Gary (Jullie). He will be missed by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 15, at 10:30 a.m. at Rio Verde Community Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1028 E. McDowell Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85006 or Sunshine Acres Children’s Home, 3405 N. Higley Road, Mesa, AZ 85215.
Elmer Batin
Elmer J. Batin, 70, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 19, 1997 at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-Osborn.
Born June 29, 1927 in Dayton, Ohio, Mr. Batin was retired from the electrical warehouse staff for Cleveland Electric Illuminating.
He was an Air Force veteran as well.
Survivors include his wife, Laura, of Fountain Hills; son, Greg Batin of Mesa; daughter, Kathy Zaranec; and two grandchildren, Bobby and Melissa.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd.
A 10 a.m. funeral service will be held Friday, Oct. 24, at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.
Theresa Greco
Theresa Greco, 78, of Fountain Hills died Dec. 18, 1997 at Scottsdale Memorial Osborn Hospital.
Born Nov. 2, 1919 in New York City, Mrs. Greco was a seamstress in the garment industry.
She is survived by a son, Alexander Greco of Long Island, N.Y.; a daughter, Connie Barczak of Fountain Hills; two sisters, Mary Macchio and Lillian Caperna; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service was held last Saturday morning at Church of the Ascension.
She was buried at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.
Arrangements were made by Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.
Raymond L. Moloney
Raymond L. Moloney, 77, husband, father, teacher and friend, died Dec. 15, 1997 after several years battling chronic lung disease.
While recognized by his peers and students as "Doctor" Moloney, he always preferred to be called Ray. Ray was born on July 13, 1920 in the little Spanish settlement of San Luis, Colo. He was very proud of his Spanish and Irish heritages, and spoke both Spanish and English from childhood.
His family moved to Monte Vista, Colo. in 1927, where he grew up and graduated from high school at age 16. He served as a translator for the FBI during World War II.
He began his teaching career during his sophomore year at Colorado University in 1948 as an instructor. He then proceeded to complete both his Master’s and Doctorate in Spanish and Portuguese at CU, in Boulder, in 1953. His first full-time university teaching position was in 1953-54 at Miami University, Ohio. From 1954 to 1958, he was an assistant, and then associate, professor at the University of Wisconsin. He advanced to full professor in 1959 at the University of Portland, Ore. At age 39 in 1959, he became one of the youngest chairmen of a university department in the country, back at Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio, where he resided for the remainder of his teaching career.
He taught not only Spanish and Portuguese languages and literature, but also shared his wisdom and philosophy of life with scores of students whose lives remain touched today.
During retirement, he served as a volunteer Spanish translator for the Fountain Hills Municipal Court. He lived by his principles of truth, honesty, equality and integrity.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pat; his son Mike; daughters Anita and Charlotte; grandchildren Jason, Chandra, Camile, Sean, Daniel, Erek, Yusef and Brett; and great-grandson Weston. Also surviving are his sister Marie and brothers LeRoy "Bud," Emmett and Paul.
Private memorial services will be held in Fountain Hills on Dec. 28.
Irene Thompson
Former Fountain Hills resident Irene Thompson died Sept. 24, 1997 in a nursing home at Sedro Wooley, Wash.
She and her husband, Charlie, who preceded her in death, first moved to Fountain Hills in the early 1970s.
Mr. Thompson worked for McCulloch Properties at the time.
Born Aug. 23, 1915, Mrs. Thompson was an early member of the Fountain Hills Women's Club, belonged to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and was an avid bridge player.
Survivors include her three children, Frank, Delores and Charlene.
Glenn Stiefel
Glenn W. Stiefel, 35, a former Fountain Hills resident, died Sept. 26, 1997 at St. Joseph's Medical Center in West Paterson, N.J. after a long illness.
He was born in Irvington, N.J. and lived in Arizona for 11 years before moving to Independence, N.J. a year ago.
Mr. Stiefel was an auto mechanic for 15 years. He worked at various automotive shops in Fountain Hills for 11 years, the last one at Red Rock Auto Service.
Survivors include his mother, Janice of Independence; a brother, Richard of Hackettstown, N.J.; two sisters, Debbie of Hackettstown and Donna Vnenchak of Flanders, N.J.; and two nephews and three nieces.
Clarence S. "Clunk" Lund
A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 28, for Clarence S. "Clunk" Lund, one of Fountain Hills' most active early-day volunteers.
The retired advertising executive almost single-handedly initiated the community's first tourism promotions during years of volunteer service with the Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Lund, 81, died at Life Care Center of Scottsdale Friday, May 24, after a long illness. He was born in Eau Claire, Wisc., and was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin.
After college, he went to work for the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency, which was the largest in the world for many years. He worked his way up to senior vice president and was one of the executives in charge of the multi-million dollar Kraft Foods account.
After retirement, he and wife Helen moved Winetka, Ill.,to Fountain Hills, building one of the first homes on Glenbrook Boulevard.
He soon became active with the newly-formed Chamber of Commerce and chaired the Advertising and Tourism Committee from 1976 to 1980. He also served on the Chamber's board of directors in 1978.
Some of the projects he is credited with are:
• Getting Fountain Hills listed on state highway markers on Shea Boulevard, McDowell Road and the Beeline Highway.
• First Fountain Hills tourism brochure.
• First Fountain Hills billboard.
• Served on the first Fountain Festival of Arts & Crafts Committee.
• Served on the first Economic Development Committee and developed advertising that brought in numerous inquiries from the Wall Street Journal.
• Served on the planning committee for 8's Great Sunday, which evolved into the Fountain Hills Great Fair.
• Chaired the Civic Association's Community beautification committee which bought trash cans that were placed throughout the business district and awarded homeowners for outstanding landscaping.
• Served on the community's first incorporation committee.
Mr. Lund was also a charter member of The Club, a private men's organization. He served as president one year.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Judy Kaff of Scottsdale; Barbara Wickershan of St. Louis, Mo.; Mary Corrigan of Scottsdale; and Martha Vanderwerf of Scottsdale; ll grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
Interment was at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.
