Lois Burke

Lois E. Burke, 46, of Fort McDowell died April 18, 2001 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.

Born Jan. 18, 1955 at San Carlos, Mrs. Burke was a homemaker.

She is survived by her mother, Evangeline “Angie” Jones; companion, Eli Smith; sons, Clayton Delano and Elliot Jones; daughters, Traci and Juleigh Burke; brothers, Johnnie G. Jones, Sylvester Jones (Bonnie), Gilbert Jones Jr. (Veronica) and Duane B. Jones (Cornelia); sisters, Sharon Dolan, Velma Jones, Karen M. Jones and Harlene K. Bullis (Vernon); and one granddaughter, Brigett Hailey Delano – all are from Fort McDowell Indian Community.

She was preceded in death by a son, Dean Jones, in 1995.

Visitation was held April 22 at the family residence, and a service was held April 23 at the Fort McDowell Presbyterian Arbor. Interment was at Fort McDowell cemetery.

Elaine Klieger

Elaine Delores Klieger, 84, of Fountain Hills died May 2, 2001.

Born Oct. 24, 1916 in Milwaukee, Wis., she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Jack A. Klieger, and her loving parents, Clarence and Cecelia Walderon.

Mrs. Klieger is survived by her loving daughter Jackie Klieger of Houston, Texas and nephews Christian Klieger of Martinez, Calif. and Douglas Klieger of Wayne, Pa. along with numerous friends.

A special tribute goes to Mrs. Klieger’s recent caregivers, Karen, Annie, Vivian, Mary, Shelly, Lois, Gerri, Marlis, Carolyn, Christine and Debbie.

Memorials may be made to the Medical College of Wisconsin Eye Institute, 925 N. 87th St., Milwaukee, WI 53226 or the Dr. and Mrs. Jack A. Klieger Library Fund c/o St. Joseph’s Hospital, 5000 W. Chambers St., Milwaukee, WI 53210.

A celebration of life gathering and service was held Monday, May 7, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

Annie Rayburn

Annie Rayburn, 53, of Fountain Hills passed away March 20, 2001 at the home of her parents in Cottonwood.

She was born on Long Island, N.Y. on Oct. 25, 1947. She attended high school in Glendale and attended the University of Iowa. She lived in Alaska where she worked on the Alaskan pipeline.

Most recently she had been self-employed as a massage therapist and spiritual healer in Fountain Hills.

Annie is survived by her son, Eric Rayburn, of Tennessee; her parents, Louis and Domenica Chavez of Cottonwood; two brothers, Tim Chavez of Cottonwood and Val Chavez of Ilwaco, Wash.; two sisters, Mary Brimhall of Show Low and Michelle Cutting of Anchorage, Alaska; several nieces and nephews; and her dog and constant companion, Pancho.

Annie was preceded in death by her brother, Michael.

Annie will be missed dearly by her friends and the many people she touched through her work and her uncompromising spirit.

Roy John Newhard

Roy John Newhard, 71, of Fountain Hills died May 7 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea hospital.

Mr. Newhard was born March 6, 1930 in Orchard Park, NY. He worked in wall system sales. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Newhard was active in the Fountain Hills social scene as a member of the Men’s Club, Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, a former member of Sunset Kiwanis Club and the Automobile Club.

A loving husband, father and dear friend, Mr. Newhard is survived by his wife, Yvonne of Fountain Hills; three daughters, Debra (Eric) Kloor of Lafayette, CO, Nancy (Greg) Bailey of LaMesa, CA and Susan (Anthony) Pinto of New River, AZ; and three grandchildren, Noah and Sophie Kloor and Nicholas Pinto.

A memorial service for Mr. Newhard will be held Thursday, May 10 at 11 a.m. at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 Fountain Hills Boulevard.

The family requests memorial contributions to the Southwest Autism Research Center, 1002 E. McDowell Road, Ste. 8, Phoenix, AZ 85006.

Goldie C. Chieger

Goldie C. Chieger, 83, of Fountain Hills died Aug. 1, 2001 in Scottsdale.

Mrs. Chieger was born on Feb. 15, 1918 in Detroit, Mich., where she lived until 1979. Upon the retirement of her husband, George Chieger, an executive with Fruehauf Trailer Corporation, the Chiegers moved to Santa Fe.

A resident of Fountain Hills since 1994, Mrs. Chieger was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Chieger is survived by her husband of 59 years, George; daughters, Kathryn J. Chieger of Evanston, Ill. and Roxann L. Chieger of Denver; sisters, Anne Armstrong of Southfield, Mich. and Virginia Kanyo of Novi, Mich.; and her brother, Louis G. Payor of Winter Park, Fla.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church, corner of Fountain Hills and Palisades boulevards.

Velma B. Schessler

Velma Bechtold Schessler, 68, a former longtime Minot, N.D. resident died Thursday, Aug. 2 in her Payson home.

Her funeral service will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with interment to follow in Rosehill Memorial Park. There will be a memorial service on Aug. 14 in Payson at 2 p.m. at Shepherd of the Pines Church.

Velma Busch was born Sept. 28, 1932 near Sawyer, N.D., and was the daughter of William and Irene (Hankel) Busch. She was raised and educated in Sawyer Township of Ward County and graduated from Sawyer High School.

She was united in marriage to Benjamin “Bennie” Bechtold on June 17, 1950 in Minot. They made their home throughout the years in Minot where they raised their six children along with being owners of Bechtold Excavating and Paving Company for a number of years. Bennie dies on Aug. 10, 1993.

Velma was united in marriage to Ralph Schessler on July 7, 1997. They made their home in Arizona until her death.

Velma was very active with the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Minot where she had served with the Ladies Auxiliary and sang in the church choir.

Survivors include: husband Ralph Schessler of Payson; daughters Edith (Daniel) Lade of Velva, N.D., Gail (Dan) Spilovoy of Bismark, N.D., Laurel (Vern) O’Brien of Fountain Hills, Beverly Williams of Fountain Hills, son Jerry (Elvira) Bechtold of Colorado Springs, Colo.; fifteen grandchildren; one great-great child; sister Marjorie Bechtold of Minot and brother Ronald Busch of Grand Forks, N.D.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bennie, son, Donald, brothers Vergil and Larry Busch and sister Adeline Melhoff.

Visitation will take place on Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home in Minot.

Memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Dakota Boys Ranch, ALS Lou Gehrig’s Foundation or the Hospices RTA, Payson.

Mary Lou Winzenburg

Mary Lou Winzenburg, 76, of Fountain Hills died July 31, 2001 at her residence.

Born Sept. 26, 1924 in Little Falls, Minn., she was a retired school teacher.

Mrs. Winzenburg was a member of the American Association of University Women (A.A.U.W.), Fountain Hills Historical Society, C. Jung Society and was an active parishioner at Church of the Ascension.

Her life was truly a journey toward finding the presence of God in all that she encountered.

Survivors include her sons, Mark (Pamela) of Naperville, Ill., Robert (Bev) of North Mankato, Minn. and Eric (Paris) of Baltimore, Md.; daughter, Mary Winzenburg of Burlington, Vt.; brother, Dr. Edward G. Huppler (Sylvia) of Little Canada, Minn.; sisters, Margaret McMillen of La Mirada, Calif., Sister Faith Huppler of Albuquerque, N.M. and Kay Mikkelson (Dale) of Fountain Hills; and 10 grandchildren.

A Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial was held at Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills as well as a Memorial Mass and burial at Church of the Good Shepherd in Jackson, Minn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, 420 W. Watkins St., Phoenix, AZ 85002.

Robert Zicarelli

Robert Francis Zicarelli, 77, of Rio Verde, born Feb. 20, 1924 in Kenosha, Wis., passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 2, 2001.

He was a nationally honored pioneer of the venture capital industry, directly and indirectly responsible for thousands of new jobs and the success of countless businesses.

He was active in his church and community, quietly supporting the growth and development of individuals with whom he came in contact.

Mr. Zicarelli served in the Army Air Force during World War II, received B.S. and MBA degrees from Northwestern University, and worked as an investment analyst for Northwestern University and the Allstate Insurance Company.

He joined Norwest Growth Fund in 1961 and served in several capacities including vice president, director, president and chief executive officer.

Norwest Growth Fund and its successor companies were one of the largest venture capital groups in the country.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary; four sons, John, Jim, Tom and David; and grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Friends of the Orphans, 424 E. Southern Avenue, suite 102, Tempe, AZ 85282; Rio Verde Community Church, 25603 Danny Lane, Rio Verde, AZ 86263; or to Faith Counseling Center, 10505 N. 69th Street, suite 600, Scottsdale, AZ 85253.

Services will be held at the Rio Verde Community Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11.

Joseph Coombs

Joseph Coombs, who designed Lake Havasu City and much of the original master plan for Fountain Hills died Sunday, Sept. 22, in Prescott.

He was 75.

Coombs was also instrumental in assisting with the purchase of London Bridge and its relocation to Lake Havasu City.

He also was involved with the construction of the World’s Tallest Fountain in Fountain Hills.

No formal services are planned.

Stella Czaplicki

Stella Czaplicki, 78, of Fountain Hills died Sept. 27, 2001.

Born June 17, 1923 in Jersey City, N.J., Mrs. Czaplicki was a homemaker.

She is survived by her daughter, Joy Rasmussen (Richard) of Fountain Hills; granddaughter, Cheryl Shea (Bart) of Fountain Hills; and two great-grandchildren, Mark and Katelyn Shea of Fountain Hills.

Private services will be held.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Social Concerns Fund, P.O. Box 17444, Fountain Hills, AZ 85269.

`Kirk' Kirkpatrick Jr.

"Kirk" Kirkpatrick Jr., 63, of Fountain Hills died Dec. 2, 1997 at the Eckstein Center, Hospice of the Valley, Scottsdale.

Born June 30, 1934, Mr. Kirkpatrick was involved in the transportation industry as a bus driver with Greyhound Bus Lines.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran from the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Joanna Kirkpatrick of Fountain Hills; sons, Robert and Joseph Kirkpatrick; daughters, Donna Kirkpatrick of Fountain Hills and Josie Beard of Denver, Colo.; brothers, William Barton, Leo Barton and Michael Barton; sisters, Joan Courture, Carol Kinsey, Shirley Fabrizzi, Marrie Bianchi and Patty; and four grandchildren.

Visitation was Dec. 4 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, with a service Dec. 5 at First Assembly of God.

Interment was at National Memorial cemetery in Phoenix.

Irene Thompson

Former Fountain Hills resident Irene Thompson died Sept. 24, 1997 in a nursing home at Sedro Wooley, Wash.

She and her husband, Charlie, who preceded her in death, first moved to Fountain Hills in the early 1970s.

Mr. Thompson worked for McCulloch Properties at the time.

Born Aug. 23, 1915, Mrs. Thompson was an early member of the Fountain Hills Women's Club, belonged to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and was an avid bridge player.

Survivors include her three children, Frank, Delores and Charlene.

Glenn Stiefel

Glenn W. Stiefel, 35, a former Fountain Hills resident, died Sept. 26, 1997 at St. Joseph's Medical Center in West Paterson, N.J. after a long illness.

He was born in Irvington, N.J. and lived in Arizona for 11 years before moving to Independence, N.J. a year ago.

Mr. Stiefel was an auto mechanic for 15 years. He worked at various automotive shops in Fountain Hills for 11 years, the last one at Red Rock Auto Service.

Survivors include his mother, Janice of Independence; a brother, Richard of Hackettstown, N.J.; two sisters, Debbie of Hackettstown and Donna Vnenchak of Flanders, N.J.; and two nephews and three nieces.

Samuel W. Vancel

Samuel W. Vancel, 53, of Fountain Hills died Dec. 26, 2001 in Fountain Hills.

Mr. Vancel was born Feb. 13, 1948 in Tazewell, Tenn. He was owner of U.S. Industrial Fastener Supply Company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Vancel is survived by his father, Rev. Hugh Vancel of Tazewell, Tenn.; his wife, Lillian Vancel of Fountain Hills; a son, James Vancel, and a daughter, Samantha Vancel, both of Fountain Hills; a brother, Joe Vancel (Wanda) of Tazewell, Tenn.; and a sister, Cornie Belle McCloud of Nashville, Tenn.

Visitation was held Saturday, Dec. 29, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Graveside services were held at Paradise Memorial Garden in Scottsdale with a memorial service at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.

The family is requesting memorial contributions to the Alliance for Lung Cancer, P.O. Box 849, Vancouver, WA 98666.
