Mary Piper
Mary E. Piper, 75, of Fountain Hills died here on Nov. 11, 1999.
Born Aug. 22, 1924 in Akron, Ohio, Piper was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II and later was a self-employed accountant.
She was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels programs in Fountain Hills as well as a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey J. Burton (Jan) and Richard E. Burton, both of Chandler, Ariz.; three daughters, Marie McDonald-Frame (Niel) of Golden, Colo., Christie K. Burton of White Lake, Mich. and Dana D. Burton-Arning of Walled Lake, Mich.; a brother, John P. Peard of Rush City, Minn.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. yesterday at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Mary Piper Memorial Fund, 1411 W. Temple Plaza in Chandler, Ariz., 85224.
Nina Rice
Nina L. Rice, 83, of Rio Verde died on Nov. 12, 1999.
Born on Jan. 31, 1916 in Athelston, Iowa, Rice was employed as a homemaker.
She is survived by her daughters, Muriel Witt and Elaine Szalay both of Rio Verde; three brothers, Gerald Walston of Jefferson, Iowa, Elvin Walston of Bedford, Iowa and Marvin Walston of Waverly, Iowa; two sisters, Hazel Hoover of Rio Verde and Elise Preston of Lenox, Iowa; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers Donald, Vance and Verle Walston and sisters Pearl May and Cora Sue Walston.
A memorial service for Nina Rice was held yesterday at Rio Verde Community Church. Interment was scheduled to take place at Crown Hill cemetery in Twinsburg, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street in Phoenix, 85014-5669.
Carl Becherer
Carl Victor Becherer, DDS, died after a brief battle with cancer on Dec. 23, 2000.
Dr. Becherer was born in Belleville, Ill. on Aug. 6, 1925 and moved to Milwaukee at the age of 17 to attend Marquette University. His wife, Helen P. Hoffman, to whom he was married for 56 years, survives him.
His children, Sue Spalatin, Dr. Jeff Becherer, Bill Becherer, Mary Beth Stilp, Dr. John Becherer and Dan Becherer, also survive him.
He will also be missed by his grandchildren Jen Spalatin, Sally More, Ann and Chris Spalatin, Sarah, Joe, Dizzy, Katie, Julie and Alex Becherer, Peter Stilp and Ali and Sami Becherer and great grandchild Sorin Moore.
Also brother and sister-in-law Paul and Anita Becherer, Mary Lou Adeline, Juanita and Jack Grundy, James and Betty Becherer and a multitude of wonderful friends, nieces and nephews.
Dr. Becherer graduated from the Marquette School of Dentistry in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, receiving numerous military honors.
He was a Wauwatosa dentist for 40 years, Professor Emeritus at MUSOD, Dental Alumnus of the year in 1977, Past President of the Dental Forum-Milwaukee, Fellow in the International College of Dentists and a member of several other professional organizations.
Dr. Becherer, a devoted Catholic, tennis enthusiast and remodeling buff, sang like an angel every chance he got. Family and friends agree that with his many talents, abilities and energies, he left the world a better place even as he sang, "I Did It My Way."
A celebratory mass will be held today, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. with a luncheon to follow at the Church of the Ascension, located at 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd. There is a life celebration planned in Milwaukee on Jan. 12, 2001.

Michalena Petroff
Michalena Petroff, 83 of Fountain Hills died Dec. 24, 2000 in Scottsdale.
Born Feb. 13, 1917 in Detroit, Mich., she was a manufacturing factory worker during her working years.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Petroff of Fountain Hills; daughter, Rita Tinsley of Michigan; six brothers and sisters; and five grandchildren.
Marjorie Taylor
It is with sadness that her family announces the passing of Marjorie Joy Taylor, 82.
She was born in Shanghai, China, raised in England and moved to the United States in 1975.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Shirley Hampson Taylor, her daughter and son-in-law, Hilary and Goey Quinton, and her grandchildren, Toby, Victoria, Emma and Giles.
She will be greatly missed.
Sylvester Aimone
Sylvester V. "Sy" Aimone, 80, of Fountain Hills died Dec. 22, 1999, in Scottsdale.
Born in Witt, Ill., Mr. Aimone was a long-time Fountain Hills resident who was a U.S. Army veteran from World War II, worked as a manufacturing engineer for Fort Motor Co. before retiring and was active with the Fountain Hills Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred, of Fountain Hills; daughters, Michele Johnson of Lacey, Wash., Sylvia Aimone of Fountain Hills and Lisa Marsh of Fountain Hills; a son, Michael Aimone of Fairfax, Va.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Dec. 27 at Mountain View Presbyterian Church in Scottsdale. Messinger Mortuary & Chapel of Scottsdale handled the arrangements.

Eric Cuniff
Eric Cuniff, 47, of Fountain Hills died Dec. 25, 1999.
Born Sept. 15, 1952 in Highland Park, Mich., Mr. Cuniff was self-employed.
Survivors include a brother, R.T. Cuniff (Robin) of Oceanside, Calif.; and friend, Bill Lutz of Fountain Hills.

Stella Stancati
Stella Celeste Stancati of Fountain Hills died at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea on Dec. 26, 1999 at the age of 82.
Born Stella Celeste Biscardi on Aug. 4, 1917, she was the 18th child of Italian immigrant parents.
She grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., attended school there and was a member of an active, church going family.
True to her name, Stella Celeste (which means "heavenly star") became the "star" of her husband, Frank, and their children.
She and her family moved to Rockaway, N.Y., where they strove to be active in the church community.
As empty nesters, she and Frank moved to Valencia, Calif. to retire in 1989.
An earthquake on Jan. 17 of 1994, considered to be one of the most severe in California’s history, prompted the couple to move to their final home in Fountain Hills, where they were soon joined by their children.
Stella was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1996 and a grandchild, Lisa Stancati, who died in 1992.
She is survived by daughters Gloria Coleman and Sylvia Beufve, sons Vincent and Timothy Stancati and a host of grandchildren.
A visitation for Stella was held yesterday, Dec. 28, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary followed by an evening funeral service.
A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 29, at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.
Debra Haas
After a long and enduring battle with cancer, Debra Haas passed away on Nov. 27, 2000. She was 48.
Her final days were spent at home with her family at her side. Right to the end she continued to amaze all with her courage and sense of humor, but none of her stars shone brighter than the love and caring that she constantly shared with all who surrounded her.
She always put everyone else first, especially her family and the children who she worked with at McDowell Mountain Elementary School, where she was often seen bent over or kneeling down to hug and comfort a child. Everyone was blessed for the time that she was here.
Mrs. Haas is survived by her son Michael, her greatest treasure, and her husband Rob, of Fountain Hills, her mother-in-law Doris of Mesa, her mother Florence Nash of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., her sister Darlene and brothers Vince and Doug and their extended families.
The grief in her passing is only overcome by the love and memories that she gave to family and friends during her lifetime and that she has left behind as her legacy. She is loved and will be missed.
Services will be arranged for Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001 with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be given to the special education department at McDowell Mountain School, 14825 N. Fayette Drive, Fountain Hills, AZ 85268, Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014 or any children’s charity.
Vernon H. Lent
Vernon H. Lent, 72, of Fountain Hills died Nov. 29, 2000 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea hospital.
Mr. Lent was born April 18, 1928 in Aurora, Ill. He was a former employee of Pacific Bell where he worked as a systems technician and in network special services.
Mr. Lent is survived by his wife, Madeline, of Fountain Hills; one son, Donald (Anna) Lent of San Jose, Calif.; one daughter, Nancy; two sisters, Winifred (Don) Drake of Fountain Hills, and Lois (Fran) Bills of Scottsdale; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Two sons, Arthur and Reed, preceded Mr. Lent in death.
Interment will be at Los Gatos Memorial Park, Los Gatos, Calif.
Barneta Bennett
Barneta M. Bennett, 98, of Phoenix died Nov. 29, 1999 at the Life Care Center of Scottsdale.
Born April 20, 1901 in Pennsville, Ohio, Mrs. Bennett worked as a food service cashier during her adult career.
Survivors include her daughters, Joyce Moore of Fountain Hills and Phyllis Crump (Cameron), also of Fountain Hills; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters.
A memorial service was held Dec. 5. The family suggests memorial contribution be donated to Monte Vista Baptist Church, 2409 N. 36th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85008.
Robert Intorf
Robert J. "Bob" Intorf, 49, of Fountain Hills died recently.
Mr. Intorf was born Jan. 9, 1950 in Berkley, Calif. He was employed in restaurant management.
Mr. Intorf is survived by his wife, Sharon; a daughter, Heather and a son, Dylan. He is also survived by his father, Arnold Intorf, of Tahoe City, Calif.; a brother, David Intorf of Tahoe City, Calif.; and a sister, Joan Intorf-Fox of Reno, Nevada.
No memorial services will be held.

Kathleen Langan
Kathleen Veronica Langan, 88, died on Nov. 30, 1999 at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion, Neb.
The daughter of Walter and Emma (Lawler) Gordon, Mrs. Langan was born on Sept. 21, 1911 on a farm south of Cedar Rapids, Neb.
She was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
Mrs. Langan received her elementary education at St. Anthony’s School and graduated from St. Anthony’s High School. She attended the University of Nebraska for one year and taught school at Boone County District 48 south of Cedar Rapids for four years.
She married Willis W. Langan on Feb. 24, 1936 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. The couple made their home in Cedar Rapids.
Mrs. Langan was a homemaker and news reporter for The Cedar Rapids Press for ten years. She and her husband moved to Wolf Good Samaritan Memorial Center in 1998.
She enjoyed crocheting, baseball games, playing cards, cooking and music. She was an avid Cubs fan who was also proud of her Irish heritage.
Mrs. Langan was a lifetime member of St. Anthony’s, where she participated in activities of the Altar Society, the Sunshine Club and the Rosary Club.
Survivors include her husband and seven children: daughter Lorraine Hoff and husband Dallas of Norfolk, Neb., son David Langan and wife Connie, daughter Peg Reeder and husband Tom, daughter JoAnn Miller and husband Fritz all of Cedar Rapids, son Michael Langan and wife Diane of Columbus, Neb., daughter Patricia Selle and husband Jerome of Grand Island, Neb. and daughter Nancy Dobson and husband Rich of Fountain Hills.
Other survivors include brother Tom Gordon and wife Joan of St. Louis, sister Eileen Harding of Lincoln, Neb., 28 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Langan was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, Joseph, a sister, Margaret Langan, and one grandchild, Tony Reeder.
Visitations for Mrs. Langan were held on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3 at Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. Interment took place at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church cemetery.
Alexander Swartz
Alexander Michael Swartz, grandson of Michael and Carol Khazai of Fountain Hills, died Nov. 29, 1999, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix.
Alexander was just eight months old having been born March 10, 1999.
He is survived by his parents, Mitra and Gregory Swartz of Phoenix; maternal grandparents, the Khazais; and paternal grandmother, Rosalie Swartz of Indianapolis, Ind.
A memorial service for Alexander Swartz was held Friday, Dec. 3, 1999 at Palo Cristi Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley.
