David Warren Bliss
1953-2004
David Warren Bliss passed away Dec. 9, 2004, at his home, in McNeal, following an extended illness.
A memorial service to celebrate his life was held on Thursday, Dec. 16, at 10 a.m. at Brown - Page Mortuary, 910 F. Avenue in Douglas, and was conducted by Chaplin Ken Keat of the Arizona State Prison.
Interment with military honors followed at the McNeal cemetery.
David was the youngest of eight children born to Theron Lloyd and Barbara Frances (Chick) Bliss. He was born in Kingman on May 14,1953.
David served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict aboard the USS Patton and was a gunner on a helicopter in Dinang Vietnam.
He received a Vietnam Service Medal twice while saving his country.
He worked for several years as a security guard, and for the last 11 and half years served as a correctional sergeant at the Arizona State Prison in Douglas.
David was devoted to his family and loved being with them.
They were the light of his life.
He had interests such as hunting and fishing; fixing up and remodeling their home, gardening, caring for animals, etc. He also enjoyed cooking and cross-stitching.
David was loved by his family and friends and highly respected by all who knew and worked with him.
He will be greatly missed by everyone.
David is loved by his wife of 28 years, Hazel Ann (Davidson).
They have three children: a son Andrew Lloyd of McNeal; and two daughters, Anne Marie of Tucson, and Wanda June of McNeal; along with two grandchildren Ty Robert Lloyd Bliss of Zion, Ill., and Anastasia Alyssa-Marie Bliss of Tucson.
He is survived by a brother, Joseph Garth (Katherine) Bliss of Show Low; and three sisters, Belva Anne (Daniel) Klump of Willcox, Margaret Ruth (Jerry) Allen of Florence, and Jessie Kathryn (Keith) Klump of Willcox.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles Donald Bliss; and two sisters, Wanda Lorraine Bliss and Martha Rose Poole.
Ernest Soto Martinez
1920-2004
Ernest Soto Martinez, of Tucson, died Dec. 12, 2004, at the age of 84.
He was born March 10, 1920, in Willcox.
He was a WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy, and was a Friend of Bill for many, many years.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe, Gilbert, Ray and Albert Martinez; three sisters, Delfina Roberts, Irma Gomez and Mercedes Sanchez.
He is survived by his wife, Chonita Martinez of Tucson; brother John Martinez; two sisters, Lina Valerio and Annie Leyba; grandchilden, Gerry, Duane, Michael and Susan Gamez, Ronnie Rodriguez and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass was Friday, Dec. 17, at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 601 E. Ft Lowell Rd.
Visitation was Thursday, Dec. 16, from, from 4 - 8 p.m., with Rosary at 7 p.m.
Services were under the direction of Evergreen Mortuary, on N. Oracle Rd. and W. Miracle Mile.
Sebastian S. Rubio
1912-2004
Sebastian S. Rubio, of Willcox, died Dec. 13, 2004, at the age of 92.
He was born in Magdalena, Mexico, on Feb. 25, 1912, to Lucas and Manuela (Sanchez) Rubio.
Sebastian came to Willcox in 1944.
He retired from the City of Willcox as a heavy equipment operator, and he also worked at the Johnson Mine and for Southern Pacific Railroad.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include his sons Juan (Shirley) and Manuel (Bobbi), both of Willcox; and his daughter Josie (Robert) Sinohui, of Willcox; along with eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Preceded him in death was his parents, his wife Nellie and second wife Rosalia; and two sons Roberto and Jose.
Rosary was said Thursday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m., at Westlawn Chapel.
Funeral mass was celebrated Friday, Dec. 17, at 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with cremation following.
Burial of his cremains was in Sunset cemetery on Monday, Dec. 20.
Services were under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary and Crematorium of Willcox.
Joe R. Jobe
1931-2004
Joe R. Jobe, of Willcox, died Dec. 18, 2004, at his home at the age of 73.
He was born in Waco, Texas, on Nov. 11, 1931 to Henry and Lela (McCrae) Jobe.
Joe lived in Arizona for 55 years and farmed in Marana for many of those years. He moved to Willcox in 1984.
He married his wife Bobbie Mahar in Lordsburg, N.M.
Survivors include his wife Bobbie of Willcox; daughters Carol (James) Fellers of Bellingham, Wash., and Sandy DeBusk of Willcox; and his son Danny of Tucson.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 10:30 a.m., at Westlawn Chapel.
Burial will be in Safford cemetery in Safford.

Sammy Glenn Bailey
1949-2004
Sammy Glenn Bailey, 54, passed away Oct. 29, 2004, in Seattle, Wash.
He was the beloved husband of Catherine and father of Kristien (Brian) Tary and Patrick Bailey.
Sam was born Oct. 31, 1949, to Samuel M. and Glindeene Bailey, and was brother to Cydnee (Joe) Lundberg and Kelli (Mason) Hughes.
Sam was born in Lubbock, Texas.
He spent the first eight years of his education in Friona, Texas.
Sam's family moved to Willcox in 1964, where Sam attended and graduated from Willcox High School in 1968.
After high school, he attended ASU and went on to graduate from mortuary school in San Francisco, Calif.
During Sam's 38-year career in the funeral service, he managed a number of funeral homes including Purdy & Walters with Cassidy in Everett, Wash., and Bonney-Watson and Capitol Hill in Seattle, Wash.
He was a member of St. James Cathedral Parish.
True to his roots, he was a southern gentleman.
His smile, infectious personality, propensity for collecting stuff, and "managing by piles" were hallmark traits.
The family received friends between 3 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Purdy & Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home in Everett, Washington.
Funeral Mass was on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 1:30 p.m. at St. James Cathedral in Seattle, Wash.
Entombment followed at Floral Hills cemetery in Lynnwood, Wash.
Gordon Ewing
1925 - 2004
Gordon Ewing passed away peacefully in his sleep on Nov. 23, 2004.
Born on April 7, 1925 in Willcox, he served in the Navy from 1943-1946.
He earned a bachelor's degree from University of California, Berkeley, before deciding to pursue a show business career.
Gordon was a successful actor in all mediums, but primarily in TV commercials.
He also sung in musical comedy, opera, and concerts including his own one-man show.
He lived continuously in Glendale with his wife Nancy from 1959 until his death.
Gordon is survived by his wife Nancy, sons Mark and Brian, and four grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 1 p.m., at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.
Leeado "Lee" Lawson
1923 -2004
Leeado "Lee" Lawson, former Willcox resident, died Dec. 13, 2004, in Crossett, Ark., at the age of 81.
She was born in Rubottom, Okla., on Oct. 16, 1923, to Andrew and Beulah (Hall) Barrick.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Lawson and daughter Royce Garber.
Lee is survived by her seven children: Jack Lee Brintle of Leon, Okla., Saundra Hitchcock of Mesa, Joyce Martin of Gilbert, Sonny Lawson of Gene Autry, Okla., Jerry Lawson of Prescott, Judy Ford of Davis, Okla., and Carrie Fletcher of Crossett, Ark.
Also surviving are 25 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Lee was married to Roy Lawson and spent most of her life in Arizona.
Some of her best years were at the White House Ranch near Benson, where Roy was the foreman.
In 1977, she and Roy moved to Willcox until failing health caused her to move to Crossett, Ark.
While in Crossett, she attended Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and was very active with the Senior Citizen Group.
She loved Arizona and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation was held on Sunday, Dec. 19, at Westlawn Chapel, with funeral services on Monday, Dec. 20, at 1 p.m., at Westlawn Chapel in Willcox.
Burial followed at Sunset cemetery in Willcox. Contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
Services were under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary and Crematorium of Willcox.
Donald W. DeVillers
1923 -2004
Donald W. DeVillers, of Willcox, died at his home on Dec. 19, 2004, at the age of 80.
He was born on Dec. 20, 1923, in Luxemburg, Wis., to William and Lena (Vanderel) DeVillers.
Don attended Luxemburg High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II.
He owned and operated several bar and grills, including the Riverside Bar Room, The Store Club, Office Lounge and Charcoal House.
He was also an avid carpenter and a Green Bay Packers fan.
Don was a member of the American Legion, Willcox Elks Lodge # 2131 and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law Christine and Bernie Erickson, and four granddaughters and their families.
Also surviving is his brother Mick (Helen) and sister-in-law Fran.
Preceding him in death was his parents, son Paul, brother Earl, and his sister Evelyn and brother-in-law Joe.
At his request no services will be held and cremation has taken place at Westlawn Crematorium.
