Mary C. Pavone Jester
1921-2004
Mary C. Pavone Jester, of Willcox, died Oct. 9, 2004 at the age of 82.
She was born in Hornell, N.Y. on Dec. 25, 1921, to Leon and Bridgett (Caparulla) Shiner.
Mary was a cook and school bus driver in Olean, N.Y., and moved to Willcox in 1983 from Olean.
Survivors include her husband Frank Jester of Willcox; daughters Carol (Gary) Chandler of Smethport, Pa., and Sandy Gardner of Phoenix; and her sons, David Pavone of Tucson and Raymond Pavone, Jr. of Delaware.
Her brothers, George Shiner of Tennessee, and Bill Shiner of Ohio; her sister Patsy McEvoy of N.Y.; and 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, also survive her.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Northern Cochise Nursing Home.
They were very efficient and the care was wonderful.
At Mary's request, no services will be held and her cremains will be buried in Olean, N.Y.
Arrangements were under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary and Crematorium of Willcox.
Mary W. Sul
1915-2004
Mary W. Sul was born March 4, 1915, in Royalton-Hartland Township, N.Y. She died Oct. 7, 2004 in Willcox.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, Charlotte Barratt Wilson and Samuel Wilson; husbands John H. MacKenzie and Joseph Sul; brother Thomas Wilson and an infant sister; and grandson Gary David Nasser.
She is survived by sister Winifred Jessie Couturier; daughters Patricia M. Fiegl and Judith A. Smith; step-sons Joseph Sul, Kenneth Sul, Roger Sul and David Sul; grandchildren David Fiegl and wife Kim, Scott Fiegl, Christopher Fiegl, Jennifer [Fiegl] Foster and husband Michael, Stephen Nasser and wife Ronda, Thomas Nasser and wife Stacie, Gordon Nasser and wife Jennifer, and numerous step-grandchildren.
She is also survived by great-grandchildren David, Sarah, Jacob, Mitchell, Julie, Emily and Amy [all Nasser] and Jonathan and Matthew Foster and Nicholas Condren, as well as step-great-grandchildren.
Mary Sul was born and raised in Western New York, but later moved to Ohio and then to Arizona in 1957.
She had two daughters, Pat and Judy and enjoyed fun times with her sister Jessie and brother Tom and their families.
She was employed as a bookkeeper for both private companies and the Maricopa County Highway Department before retiring.
She was an avid ballroom dancer and square dancer, enjoyed bowling and fishing for a number of years, and became a world traveler, visiting Russia, China, Europe, Great Britain, the Scandinavian countries, the Holy Land, Hawaii, Alaska and most states within the continental United States.
She and Mr. Sul enjoyed traveling and camping in their motorhome, as well as world traveling by cruise ship.
In early 2002, Mary Sul was moved to Willcox, Arizona, to reside in the Circle B Ranch Home under care of the Charles Wm. Leighton, Jr. Hospice, Inc.
The family is deeply grateful to the "special angels" of Hospice who provided extraordinary medical and spiritual care and to the warm and loving caregivers at Circle B Ranch.
A viewing and memorial service were held in Mesa, on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 10, under the direction of the Rev. Stewart Lewis, pastor of Velda Rose United Methodist Church of Mesa.
The family suggests contributions to either the Charles Wm. Leighton, Jr. Hospice, Inc., in Willcox, or the American Heart Association.
Arrangements were made by Westlawn Mortuary of Willcox and Melcher's Chapel of Roses in Mesa.
Margaret "Maggie" Iago Cannon Richardson
1918-2004
Margaret "Maggie" Iago Cannon Richardson, of Willcox died Oct. 17, 2004 at her home at the age of 86.
She was born in Phoenix on August 16, 1918, to Joseph Darnell and Margaret Eugenia (Igoe) Cannon.
Maggie was a lifelong Arizona native.
She graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1937, and moved to Willcox in 1980.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Holy Trinity Monastery in St. David, Lambda Chi Omega Sorority-Alpha Chapter, Willcox Art League and Northern Cochise Democratic Club.
Survivors include her children Michael (Claudia) Foster Richardson of Phoenix, and Susan (John) Arbuthnot of Willcox.
Also surviving are her grandchildren, Michael (Shelley) Richardson of Japan, William Edward (Ranale) Richardson of Pasco, Wash., Matthew (Christina) Richardson of W. Richland, Wash., Sarah Richardson of Seattle, Wash., Robert (Shannon) Arbuthnot of Mesa, Mark (Cathy) Arbuthnot of Tempe, and David (Stacie) Arbuthnot of Phoenix, along with 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was her husband William Foster Richardson on Sept. 24, 1981, her parents, two sisters Lucy Cavness and Aline Kienitz, and one great-grandchild Kortney Richardson.
Maggie was a devoted mother, grandmother, devout Catholic, a staunch Democrat and a world traveler.
Contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Parish, Holy Trinity Monastery, and St. Mary's Food Bank in Phoenix or South East Arizona Food Bank in Willcox.
Cremation was conducted at Westlawn Crematorium.
Memorial Mass will be offered on Friday, Oct. 22, at 10 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Services are under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary and Crematorium of Willcox.
Herbert R. Scott
1920-2004
Herbert R. Scott, of Willcox, died Oct. 12, 2004 at the age of 84.
He was born in San Angelo, Texas, on March 31, 1920, to Roy and Inez (Bosley) Scott.
Herbert served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was retired chef who was instrumental in opening the Queen Mary in 1963, and had the opportunity to cook for Ronald Reagan.
He was a retired builder, which was his first passion.
In 1998 he moved to Willcox from California.
In 1966 in Sun Luis, Mexico, he married Margaret Atkinson.
Survivors include his wife Margaret of Willcox; daughters Victoria Scott of Malibu, Calif., and Bonnie Jo Jones of Wenatchee, Wash.
Also surviving is his twin brother Roy of Selmar, Calif., and brother Donald; and his sister LaJolla Isen of San Diego, Calif.; along with six grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; and his cousin Howard Bosley of Willcox.
A celebration of Herbert's life will be held on Friday, Oct. 22, beginning at 1 p.m., at the home of Wayman and Loretta Hopkins, 415 E. Old Stewart Road, Willcox.
Cremation was conducted at Westlawn Crematorium.
Arrangements are under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary and Crematorium of Willcox.
Flora Von Jolly
1938-2004
Life-long Sulphur Springs Valley resident Flora Von Jolly, 66, passed away Tuesday evening, Nov. at her Elfrida home in the arms of her husband Don Jolly, of an apparent heart attack.
Flora is the daughter of the late Gail and Lucille Price of the pioneer Price Ranching family. She was born in Douglas, April 30, 1938.
Flora was more commonly known as "Sis" or "Memo" and served as a "mom" for children of all ages and to many elderly as well!
She was recognized locally, statewide, and nationally for her achievements in 4-H and was a graduate of Valley Union High School at Elfrida.
She was involved in many community activities that benefited the youth and played a major role in the periodic school reunions at Valley Union High School.
She will be sorely missed by the entire community.
She is survived by her husband, Don Jolly; and two brothers, Guy, 63, of Tempe and Clifford, 59, of Phoenix. Guy's family includes his wife Elaine, their son Scott, his wife Kelley and their two children, Zachary and Kelsey, who reside in Chandler and Jami Neu and her husband Joe and their three children, Kayla, Joe and Dan of Peoria.
Flora's surviving children include Craig Middlebrook, most recently of Los Angeles, Calif., and his grown children Ryan, Jake and Nikki, of Raton, N.M.; Patrick Middlebrook and wife Jody and their two children, Price and Dustin, of Sunizona.
Craig and Pat are also sons of Flora's first husband Gary Middlebrook of Silver City, N.M.; and her youngest son, Dean Ray Jolly, who recently returned to serve on the staff at Cochise College near Douglas.
A viewing was conducted at the Brown Page Mortuary at 910 F Ave., in Douglas, from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13.
The funeral was held at the Southern Baptist Church in Elfrida on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m.
Final resting place and site of graveside services was at Julia Page Memorial cemetery in Douglas.
Serving as pall bearers were Benjhy Bojorquez, Franky Bojorquez, Omar Mancinas, Justin Warren, Joe Neu and Josh Steinberg.
Honorary pall bearers include Scott Price, Gene Kennedy, Ernesto Leon, Cody Durham, Dale Mortenson, Bert Lippse and Ken Patterson.
Natividad "Nati" Almodova
1913-2004
Natividad "Nati" Almodova, of Bowie, died Dec. 5, 2004 in her home at the age of 91.
She was born in El Paso, Texas, on Feb. 19, 1913, to Marcial and Petra (Mariscal) Garcia.
Nati moved to San Simon in 1929 and then to Bowie in 1957.
She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, and had many hobbles to include embroidery, crocheting, word search game books, and best of all, since she was a young girl, reading True Story magazines.
Nati did washing and ironing for people to earn money to help her husband raise their family, as the railroad didn't pay much at that time.
People in the community would come to her to cook beans and tortillas because theirs weren't as good as hers, and they would pay her.
She prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary everyday and her favorite flower was the rose.
On April 19, 1933, in Lordsburg, N.M., she married Francisco Almodova and was married through the church on June 10, 1933.
They had nine children. Nati and Francisco were married 69 years until his death in July of 2002.
Nati was one of 11 children.
One sister, Manuela Garcia Carrillo of El Paso, Texas, survives her.
Also surviving are her sons Raymond and Francisco (Marta) both of Tucson, Luis (Sun Tae) of Alexandria, Va., and Julian (Marion) of California City, Calif.; her daughters Bertha Almodova of Bowie and Martha (Jim) Westberry of Mesa; and her daughter-in-law Anna Almodoba of Willcox; along with 32 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband Francisco July 13, 2002; sons Henry and Marcial and her daughter Mary Jo Almododa.
Visitation will he held on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 6 p.m., with a Rosary being said at 7 p.m., at Westlawn Chapel.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Dec. 10, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bowie.
Burial will follow in Desert Rest cemetery.
