Thurland Henry "Jack" Reay
Thurland Henry "Jack" Reay died Dec. 12, 2001 in Spanish Fork, Utah, at the age of 90. His wife Doris and daughter Penny were by his side.
Thurland was born Dec. 15, 1911 in Thatcher. Jack was the former owner of Gordon's Market in Willcox.
A funeral service for Thurland was held Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Morris David's Safford Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at the Memorial Garden Rest Haven cemetery in Safford.
Arrangements for services were under the direction of Morris David's Safford Funeral Home.
Viola C. Kendrick
Viola C. Kendrick, of Willcox died May 9, 2002 in Tucson at the age of 88.
She was born in Mountain Park, Okla., on Dec. 7, 1913 to J.W. Blackwell and Chloe May Blackwell.
Viola came to Willcox in 1983 from Santa Maria, Calif., and attended Victory Baptist Church.
On April 5, 1977 in Las Vegas, Nev., she married Ed Kendrick.
Survivors include her son Ernest Preast of Willcox; and her daughter Faye G. Parks of Jet, Okla.
Also surviving is her sister Wilma Faye Spangler of Texas; and her brother Wayne Blackwell of Las Vegas, Nev.; along with numerous grandchildren and a few great-grandchildren.
Her husband predeceased her on July 13, 1996 and her parents.
Cremation has taken place at Westlawn Crematorium with a Memorial Graveside service to be held Thursday, May 16, at 1:30 p.m. at Sunset cemetery in Willcox. Contributions may be made to the Circle B Care Home, 418 N. Austin, Willcox, AZ 85643 or Charles Wm. Leighton, Jr. Hospice, 319 W. Grant, Willcox, AZ 85643.
Services are under the direction of Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox.
Margaret Pringle
Margaret Pringle, of Willcox, died Dec. 19, 2001 in Willcox at the age of 66. She was born in Beloit, Wis., to Henry Quirk and Julia E. Quirk on July 13, 1935.
Margaret was a schoolteacher and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband Wesley; and sons Wayne (Susan) Pringle of Westland, Mich., and Terry Pringle of Tucson. Also surviving are two grandchildren; her sister; Sister Catherine Ann Quirk, CSA of Fond Du Lac, Wis.; and her brothers John Quirk of Monroe, Wis., and Terry Quirk of Addison, Ill. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. Her parents; and six sisters, Joann Quirk, Catherine Quirk, Pearl Brewer, Mary Ellen Poole, Sister Mona CSA and Patricia Quirk; along with three brothers Paul, Jerome and Ned Quirk, preceded her in death.
Visitation was Thursday, Dec. 27, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at Bring's Broadway Chapel in Tucson with funeral mass at 11 a.m., at the Our Mother of Sorrow Catholic Church in Tucson and entombment in the Our Lady of the Desert Mausoleum. Local arrangements were made by Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox.
Stanley Fields
Stanley Fields, of Pearce -Sunsites, died Feb. 28, 2002 in Willcox, at the age of 84.
He was born on April 16, 1917 in New York City to Louis Feitelson and Anna (Levine) Feitelson.
Stanley proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WW II, and retired from Wolf Shoe Company as a salesman.
He came to Bisbee, in 1991 and to Sunsites in 1995. He was a member of the Shadow Mountain Country Club in Sunsites. He enjoyed golfing, loved to play music on the organ and piano, was an avid artist and held several national titles for table tennis.
Survivors include his wife Virginia (Haymes) Fields of Sunsites; sons, Robert Fields of Los Angeles, Calif., and Ben Fields of Sunsites; daughters, Betty (Robert) Smith of Phoenix, Billie Anne (Chris) Sondberg of Nags Head, N.C., and Bonnie (James) Caiopoulos of Rockville, Md.
Also surviving is his brother Walter O'Toole of Whidbey Isle NAS, Wash., and a sister Nancy Stroble of Pittsburgh, Pa., along with 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
His parents and one sister preceded him in death.
Private family services were held with cremation conducted at Westlawn Crematorium.
Contributions may be made to the Northern Cochise Nursing Home, 901 W. Rex Allen Dr., Willcox, AZ 85643. Arrangements were under the direction of Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox.
Earl J. Christiansen
Earl J. Christiansen, of Gleeson, died April 9, 2002 in Mesa, at the age of 74.
He was born on Aug. 11, 1927 in Bisbee, to Harry Christiansen and Pearl Johnson Christiansen.
Earl was a lifelong resident of Cochise County and was a cattle rancher.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his daughters, Polly Anna Best of Ashfork, Penny Jaeger of Mesa, and Robin Carrasco of Chandler; sons, John Christiansen of Chandler, and Jack Christiansen of Mesa; and 12 grandchildren.
Also surviving are his brothers, Roy Christiansen of Glendale, Danny Christiansen of Elfrida, and his sisters Ruth Wells of Chandler and Rose Townsley of California. Preceding him in death were his parents.
Graveside services were conducted on Sunday, April 14, at 10 a.m. in the Gleeson cemetery.
Services were under the direction of Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox.
Conception L. Martinez
Conception L. Martinez, a lifetime resident of Benson, died, May 26, 2002, at the age of 104.
She was born Jan. 20, 1898 in Benson to Francisco and Isadora Ruiz Lopez.
She loved sewing and crocheting, gardening and tending her numerous animals and birds. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Benson. She worked as a seamstress at Jacomes Dept. Store in Tucson.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, a son and 13 brothers and sisters.
Services were held Friday, May 31, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Benson, with interment following at High Street cemetery with Rev. Bartolome of Sierra Vista's St. Andrew the Apostle Church officiating.
Services were under the direction of Richardson's Benson Mortuary, in Benson.
Robert 'Bob' Adami
Robert (Bob) Adami, of Naco, died Feb. 25, 2002 in Tucson, at the age of 65.
He was born in San Francisco, Calif., on Nov. 28, 1936 to Gabriel Adami and Geraldine (Carevich) Adami.
Bob proudly served in the U.S. Army and worked at Curtis Smith Industries in California as a salesman. He came to Arizona in 1995.
Survivors include his daughters Denise, Nadine and Heather Adami all of California, and a granddaughter Aimee.
He also has an extended family to include Darrell Armstrong, Alicia Main, Nathan Main, Dakota Armstrong, Dillyn Armstrong, all of Naco; Kenny (Linda) Cook of Elfrida, and Randy Armstrong and Dusty Cook both of Sierra Vista.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 2, at 4 p.m., at Westlawn Chapel in Willcox, with private cremation following at Westlawn Crematorium with Pastor Gary Jones officiating.
Services were under the direction of Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox.
Maxine Reed
Maxine Reed, of Willcox, died April 10, 2002 in Marion, Iowa at the age of 64.
She was born in Marked Tree, Ark., on April 26, 1937 to Louis Turner and Pauline McClung Turner.
Maxine came to Willcox in 1970 with her husband Bobby. She was a homemaker and a waitress.
Survivors include her sons Gary (Diane) Truschke of Willcox, Darren (Lori) Reed and Donald Truschke both of Chicago, Ill.; a daughter Laura (Jim) Truschke Ozanic of Marion, Iowa; and daughter-in-laws LuAnn Reed of Fulton, N.Y., and Judy Poretta of Willcox.
Also surviving are her sisters Donna Lane of Illinois, Charlene Smith of Kentucky, and Shirley Turner; along with 16 grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband Bobby in 1994 and her two sons Joe Reed and Robert Reed both in 1997.
Visitation was held on Sunday, April 14, at Westlawn Chapel with funeral services on Monday, April 15, at 11 a.m. at Westlawn Chapel with burial following in Sunset cemetery in Willcox.

Carmen L. Ray
1919 - 2002
Carmen L. Ray, former Pearce-Sunsites resident, died in Phoenix on August 30, 2002, at the age of 82. She was born in Jennings, Okla. on September 15, 1919 to Roy Spurgeon and Leah Arnold Spurgeon.
Carmen served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was the first woman recruiter for the WAACS. She was City Clerk for the South Miami, Fla. and was very active in the Republican Party in both state and local level. She was also instrumental in the building of the Sunsites Senior Center, was a member of the Cochise Stronghold Lioness Club and the Willcox United Methodist Church.
On July 3, 1975 in Miami, Fla. she married George E. Ray and they moved to the Sunsites area in 1977.
Preceding her in death was her husband George on April 5, 2000. Survivors include her daughters Sherry Vance of Sunsites and Melinda (Sonny) Stokes of Danville, Ill.; and sons Kevin Ray of Danville, Ill., and Kenneth Ray of Travis AFB, Calif.; along with one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at the National Memorial cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, on Thursday Sept. 5, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Ernest Norman Wakefield
Ernest Norman Wakefield, of Windsor Heights, Iowa, died Dec. 26, 2001 at the age of 90. He was born April 16, 1911 in Yorkshire, England, to Edward Ernest and Edith Wakefield.
Norm's family moved to the United States when he was 3 years old. He spent most of his life in Ionia, Mich., where he met his wife, Josephine Wood, and married her there on Aug. 11, 1935.
Norman worked for FW Woolworth. Then, when WWII escalated, Norm entered the Navy and served in the South Sea Islands. Upon returning from the war he returned to Lyons, Mich., and opened his own grocery store. Norman later worked for the state of Michigan for 25 years and retired as a state employee. During his time in Michigan, he was able to serve as Deacon of his church, a Sunday school teacher, the president of the school board, and he volunteered for whatever else needed to be done. When he retired, he and his wife lived in Lyons, Mich., Willcox, and recently moved to Windsor Heights, Iowa.
Norman Wakefield is survived by his wife Josephine of Windsor Heights, Iowa; his three sons, Terrance William Wakefield of Grand Junction, Colo., Jann (Jake) Eward Wakefield of Windsor Heights, Iowa, and Norman Lynn Wakefield of Brandywine, Md.; his sister Mary Carter of Greenville, Mich.; seven grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Dec. 29, at at 9:30 a.m., with services at 10 a.m., at the Caldwell Raddatz Funeral Home in Urbandale, Iowa. Burial followed at Oakdale cemetery in DeSoto, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa, at 5820 Winwood Drive, Johnston Iowa, 50131.
