Former NHS teacher killed in accident
Jon Richardson
Jon Richardson, a former Nogales High School English teacher and media specialist, and his 11-year old son Raymond Richardson-Hart, were killed Dec. 14, 2003 when their minivan was struck from behind by a semi tractor-trailer.
Richardson's wife Jacinta, also a former NHS English teacher, was severely injured but his 12-year-old daughter Elizabeth was treated for minor injuries and released. Jacinta Richardson was recently released from intensive care but is still recovering from her injuries, said Judy Richardson, Jon's sister who lives in Tucson.
Jon and Jacinta taught at NHS in the 1980s. Jon arrived first, following teaching stints in his hometown of Willcox and Page. Jacinta was recruited from Iowa.
After they married they moved to Peach Springs, Ariz., and later to Iowa where Jon completed a degree in library science. After a few more moves, the pair were able to move into their "dream home," a Iowan farm with their two children who they adopted six years ago.
The accident occurred as Jon was driving on Interstate 80 near West Branch, Iowa. Traffic had slowed to a near stop, and as Jon slowed, the vehicle was hit by the tractor-trailer, throwing the minivan into a third car, which rear-ended a fourth vehicle. No one except the Richardson family received injuries.
Jon and Raymond enjoyed playing soccer together. "He was a soccer parent-coach," said Bob Caldwell, a West Branch city councilor. "I don't know how long he'd been playing, but he seemed to know a lot about soccer and was trying to pass that on to his son."
Raymond Richardson-Hart was described as someone who always had a ready smile for everyone. He enjoyed both sports and music and was becoming a talented piano player.
In addition to his sister Judy, his brother Joel survives Richardson. Both his parents and a sister predeceased him.
