Richard A. 'Pat' Patterson
Former Verde Valley Man of the Year Richard Atwood Patterson died Feb. 18, 2000.
He was born May 5, 1924 in Carey, Idaho the son of James Wilford Patterson and Jenny Atwood Patterson.
Mr. Patterson was a World War II veteran serving with the U.S. Navy.
A resident of Cottonwood since 1947, he was a rancher and owner of Cottonwood Feed and Seed.
Active in his community, Mr. Patterson served as a member of the Mingus Union High School Board for 20 years. He was instrumental in getting the land donated for the current campus.
Mr. Patterson served as president and board member of the Verde Valley Fair Association and as a member of the Rural Electric Association. He helped establish electric services to South Cottonwood, Bridgeport, Camp Verde and Sedona.
Along with his wife Eudora, Mr. Patterson was responsible for bringing Cub Scouting to the Verde Valley with continual service to the Boy Scouts of America for 40 years. He was the recipient of the organization's highest council award, the Silver Beaver.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he served as branch president and as bishop in the Verde valley area. He also served in the stake presidency of the Prescott and Camp Verde Stakes and as a missionary with his wife in Western Australia.
Survivors include his wife Eudora; a sister, Ella Hilverda; his children, Richard Atwood Patterson Jr., Vicki Jo Anderson, Jack E. Poland, Mary Carol Fullerton, Fred Everett Patterson, Princess Karen Patterson, Ted Tenney Patterson; 27 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Richard "Pat" Patterson was loved as a husband, father and a friend to all. He was an honest man who always did for others what they couldn't do for themselves.
A public viewing for Mr. Patterson will take place Saturday, 12:30-1:30 p.m., at Mingus Union High School. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. in the Mingus auditorium.
Richard F. Bryant
Camp Verde resident and U.S. Navy veteran, Richard Fremont Bryant died Feb. 16, 2000 in Prescott.
A memorial service was held Friday in the Westcott Funeral Home with Paul Whitcomb of the Grace Family Church officiating. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7400 provided military honors.
Mr. Bryant was born Feb. 8, 1920 in San Diego, Calif.
A Camp Verde resident for 10 years, Mr. Bryant was a retired automotive parts salesman.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1938 to 1941.
Mr. Bryant was member of the American Legion Post 93 in Camp Verde and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. While residing in California he was a member of the Kiwanis club.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Marcella Bryant; three sons, Kenneth L. and Gary T. Bryant, and Christopher Hertz of San Diego; three daughters, Jay Tuell and Cindy Gunnarson of Camp Verde and Melissa Cowan of California; 17 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by a daughter, Jill Sprinkle.

Betty A. Owens
A celebration of life was held in Camp Verde on Friday for Arizona native and Camp Verde resident Betty Owens.
Mrs. Owens died Feb. 17, 2000 at the age of 63.
She was born in Prescott.
Mrs. Owens was a bookkeeper for Agrophosphate in Yuma before retiring six years ago to Camp Verde.
She worked for the U.S. Forest Service in the summers in their "Over 50" program. She was active in the organization of the For Your Information program in Camp Verde.
Mrs. Owens was an avid gardener and a member of the Camp Verde Garden Club.
Survivors include her husband Leo, "Roy" Owens; two daughters, Cozette Ridge of Oklahoma and Leslie Coble of Kentucky; a son, Jesse M. Owens of Camp Verde; five grandchildren and her parents, Fred and Katie Shaffer of Cottonwood.
Sylvia B. Snyder
Sylvia Snyder died in Cottonwood Feb. 19, 2000 at the age of 91.
She was an avid bridge player and had many friends in the area.
No services are planned but donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, NCICFUL, PO Box 102454 Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.
She leaves no survivors.
Olive E. Lodge
Lake Montezuma resident Olive Lodge died Feb. 21, 2000.
She was 91 years old.
Mrs. Lodge was born in New Hampshire Feb. 2, 1909.
A former resident of California, she had lived in Arizona for 43 years.
Before retiring, Mrs. Lodge had been employed as a private secretary.
Her hobbies included baking, playing canasta and golfing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin R. Lodge in 1969.
Burial is scheduled in Palisado Cemetery
in Connecticut.
Survivors include her son, Everett "Eddie" K. Lodge of Lake Montezuma.

Louis Wise
Louis Wise of Clarkdale died Feb. 9, 2000. He was 82 years old.
Lou was born July 1, 1917, in Seattle. He came to Arizona 15 years ago after having lived in California.
Lou worked it he seafood and produce business. He was a life-long fisherman and also enjoyed golfing. He loved to work in the garden and was particularly fond of flowers.
He also had a deep fondness for bird watching and had many birdhouses at his home.
He is survived by h is wife Martina Wise of Clarkdale; two daughters, Marta Inman and Starlet Stevens of California; his sisters, Nancy Frank of Seattle and Sophia Misner of California; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Private family services were held under the direction of Westcott Funeral Home.

Joseph William Cuvelier
Private family services were held for Cottonwood resident Joseph William Cuvelier, who died Jan. 17, 2000. He was 71 years old.
Mr. Cuvelier was born Aug. 30, 1928, in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He was a resident of Arizona for 14 years, previously living in California. He had been self-employed.
He is survived by his former wife Helen Cuvelier of California; son and daughter-in-law Daniel and Donna Cuvelier of California; son David Cuvelier of Phoenix; granddaughters Carrie Cuvelier of California and Lanae Cuvelier of Colorado; and grandson Eric Cuvelier of California.
Charlotte M. Schoellerman
A visitation is scheduled for noon today in the Westcott Funeral Home for Cottonwood resident, Charlotte M. Schoellerman. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. conducted by Pastor John Davis. Burial services are scheduled at Cottonwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Schoellerman died Feb. 18, 2000 in Phoenix at the age of 83.
She was born July 10, 1916 in Chicago, Ill.
Trained as a nurse, Mrs. Schoellerman worked at hospitals and nursing homes in California before retiring to Arizona 25 years ago.
Mrs. Schoellerman was a devoted Christian who participated in the Catherine Coleman Crusades while living in the Palm Springs area. She worked as a counselor for the Trinity Broadcasting Network and led many bible study groups both in California and Arizona.
Survivors include a son, Irvin L. Mauk of Cottonwood; a sister, Louis Parker of California; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Ralph S. Laws
Lake Montezuma resident Ralph Spencer Laws died Feb. 22, 2000.
He was 88 years old.
Mr. Laws was born Jan. 31, 1912 in Stratford, Conn.
Raised in Bridgeport Conn. Mr. Laws was a member of the first graduating class of what is now Bridgeport University.
The Laws lived in Whittier, Calif., for 30 years before retiring to Arizona in 1980.
Mr. Laws was a member of the Church of the Red Rocks in Sedona. He was a 32nd degree member of the Free and Accepted Masons and a member of SAR.
He was athletic and enjoyed playing golf and tennis. He possessed a wonderful singing voice and sang with many choruses and church choirs.
He will be remembered as a sweet, quiet man, an adoring husband and loving father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Jean R. Laws of Lake Montezuma; two daughters, Mary J. Laws and Donna L. Barry; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ralph David Laws.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Red Rocks in Sedona.
Ora D. Laswell
Cottonwood resident and homemaker Ora Dell Laswell died Feb. 20, 2000.
She was born March 25, 1911 in Kansas City, Mo.
Mrs. Laswell was 88 years old.
A visitation is scheduled for Feb. 25 from noon to 1 p.m. in Phoenix at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary, 719 N. 27th Ave. Funeral services are scheduled at 1 p.m. followed by burial in Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty C. Staley of Sun Lakes; son-in-law, John F. Staley; a grandson and his wife, Gregory B. and Cauleen Staley of Phoenix; a granddaughter and her husband, Julie Ann and Tom Rodriguez of Phoenix; a grandson, Scott Staley of Mesa and a great-grandson, Michael B. Rodriguez.

Joe D. Mitchell
Memorial services were held Feb. 23 at the Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood for Lake Montezuma resident and veteran Joe Daniel Mitchell.
Mr. Mitchell died Feb. 18, 2000 at the age of 75.
He was born in 1923 in Oakwood, Texas.
Mr. Mitchell bravely served on Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands with the First Marine Air Wing during World War II.
In the 1950's he was a golf pro in Southwest Texas and was later the Athletic director for the Shiprock Public Schools in New Mexico. From 1967 until his retirement in 1985, Mr. Mitchell was the principal of the Lemon Valley Elementary School in Nevada. Upon his retirement the local community center was named in his honor.
While living in Lake Montezuma he was an avid golfer at the Beaver Creek Golf Club.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Mitchell of Lake Montezuma; six children, Marilynn Seeman of Oregon, Joellen Nicola and Danalee Buhler of California, D'nelle Bloechl of Virginia, Deanne King of Washington and Daniel Mitchell of Phoenix; his step-children, Dianne Thowe of Page, Richard Schuler of Flagstaff, Fred Schuler of Virginia and Gary Schuler of Idaho; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Mitchell will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
