Allen Wade Head, known as “Shorty” to his family and friends, died peacefully in his home, September 11, 2010, after a short and agonizing battle with lung cancer. Shorty was the fourth son of Elmer and Ethel Head and was born March 04, 1945. He grew up on the beautiful farm where they lived on Holly Springs road. There on the banks of the Quachita River the boys and their friends rode horses, played in the river and worked with their father in the log woods. He was 65 years old at the time of his passing. Shorty was raised with a strong work ethic which he carried over into his later business dealings. He and his brother Elba operated as Head Brothers Construction for many years, then later he worked on his own running the heavy equipment that he loved. He took great pride in his work and was in his own way an artist as he smoothed and shaped the building sites of many homes and buildings which now stand in Mena and the surrounding area.
Shortly is survived by his loving and grieving wife Lauralee Darr, with whom he shared 28 happy years. Together they delighted in attending the horse races at Oaklawn Park and other racetracks across the country, and also in traveling abroad as much as his work allowed. He is also especially mourned by his “right hand man”, his brother Roger, and his cousin and best friend since childhood, Farrell Cole and his wife Sharon. He was preceded in death by his parents and elder sister, Opal Blackwell, and leaves behind his four brothers, two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
He will be greatly missed by all those who loved him, not the least by his precious dogs, Jack, Spookie, Scruffy, and Ladybug.
