Vernon Cleo Patterson
Vernon Cleo Patterson, 78, of Stuttgart died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Allegiance Specialty Hospital in Little Rock.
Mr. Patterson was born Sept. 30, 1930, near Stuttgart, the son of Curtis Franklin Patterson and Thelma Baker Patterson. He was a Methodist and a farmer, and a member of Ulm Hunting Club.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Duch.
Survivors are his wife, LaVerne Morris Patterson; two daughters, Valerie Ann Patterson of Stuttgart and Vivian Renee Fisher (Gus) of Little Rock; a sister, Leona Carter Swain of Bay City, Texas; three grandchildren, Dalton, Cassady and Emma; a nephew, Lance Carter; and two nieces, Carol Pyatte and Nancy Duch.
A memorial service, officiated by the Rev. Larry Kelso, will be 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church.
Local arrangements are by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart.
Margaret Eileen Hale
KINGWOOD, Texas - Margaret Eileen Hale, 91, a former Stuttgart resident, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Houston Northwest Hospital.
Mrs. Hale was born July 1, 1917, to Daniel Roth and Wilda Carter Roth. She was a homemaker and member of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit E. Hale; and sisters, Virginia Cox and Mary Gibson.
Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Malinda Duvall Hale of Kingwood, Texas; two grandchildren, Dana Lindeneau and husband Jim of Atascocita, Texas, and Greg Hale and wife Ireneof Naperville, Ill.; and two great-grandchildren, Rachel Leigh Hale and Alyssa Ann Hale.
Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. George Rook, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church with burial following in Lone Tree Cemetery
by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart.
Pauline Ives Hahn
Pauline Ives Hahn, 83, of Stuttgart, widow of Raymond E.H. Hahn, passed away Monday, April 20, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Hahn was born July 21, 1925, in San Antonio, Florida, to Harry H. Ives and Elizabeth Burger Ives. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Arkansas Post Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and several other genealogy societies. She was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Stuttgart Rotary Club.
She will be remembered as the pianist for Stuttgart’s local civic clubs for over 30 years.
Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Ives Crox.
Survivors are her daughter, Sharon H. Derden of Stuttgart; and three granddaughters and their families, Amber and Masoud Pourmehdi and their children Meena, Adam and Marcus of West Fork, Ark., Pollyanna and Steven Ford and their children, Sullivan and Catherine of Aubrey, Texas, and Sunny and Jeremy Bueker and their children, Elizabeth, Sydney, Taylor and Rhett of Stuttgart.
Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Jack Gillam, are 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church with burial following in Lone Tree Cemetery
by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Turpin Funeral Home.
The family requests memorials be made to St. John’s Lutheran School or St. John’s Lutheran Church.
John Garrich Jr.
John Edward Garrich Jr., 80, of Slovak, died at his home Monday, April 20, 2009. John was born Feb. 16, 1929, in Little Rock to Rosie and John Edward Garrich Sr. and was a lifelong resident of Slovak where he was a farmer. He was a member of St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and a member of the Knight of Columbus where he had held the office of Grand Knight and had also been the chairperson for the annual Slovak Oyster Supper for 35 years. John had served on the board of Farm Credit Services and was a constable of Slovak for six years and he also loved to play in gin tournaments.
In 1950 John joined the Army at Fort Smith, Ark., where he was assigned to the Infantry 2nd Division 38th Artillery. He advanced to the rank of sergeant and fought in the
Korean War, namely in the Battle of Old Baldy and Heartbreak Ridge. John received several medals before his discharge on Feb. 9, 1953.
On June 3, 1954, John married Kathleen Kreimeier and they had three children, Sandy, Diane and John III.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Tommy Garrich; and one nephew, Nicky Garrich.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathleen Garrich; one son John Edward Garrich III and wife Michelle; two daughters, Sandy Maybry and husband Tom and Diane Ford and husband Wendell; one sister, Rosemary Plafcan; and six grandchildren, John Taylor Garrich, Lucy Garrich, Houston Garrich, Morgan Ford, Natalye Chudy and Khristina Chudy.
Visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Wednesday followed by the rosary at St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.
Funeral mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with Monsignor Jack Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church or to Arkansas Hospice.
Betty Brands Oliphant
Betty Brands Oliphant, 80 of Stuttgart passed away peacefully Friday, April 24, 2009, at Baptist Health Medical Center – Stuttgart with loved ones at her side.
She was born July 6, 1928, in Ulm, Ark., to John and Eugenia Ramick Brands. She was a long-time member of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors are her husband of 57 years, Rhett Oliphant; two daughters, Kim and husband Tommy Oliver of Stuttgart and Kandy and husband Kenny Gray of Roe; two sisters, Onita Kimes of Stuttgart and Elizabeth and husband Charles Ashcraft of Hot Springs; five grandchildren and their spouses, Lane and Erin Oliver, Loren and Michelle Oliver, Megan and Skylar Lawless, Kortney and Megan Gray and Lindsey and Darren Walker; and numerous other relatives. "Bam-bea" will be greatly missed by her eight great-grandchildren, Hannah, Luke, Leah Kate, Holden, Forest, Graylie, D.J. and Conner.
Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. George Rook, will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church with burial following in Lone Tree Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday in the church’s fellowship hall.
Memorials may be made to Grand Avenue United Methodist Church.

Albert Carl Leder Jr.
Albert Carl Leder Jr., 94, of Stuttgart passed away Monday, April 27, 2009, at Baptist Health Medical Center-Stuttgart.
Mr. Leder was born Aug. 24, 1914, in Arkansas County, the son of Albert Carl Leder Sr. and Emilie Scheiderer Leder. He was a farmer and member of Ulm Hunting Club and Ulm Civic Club, and a Farm Bureau member. He was also a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry Leder and Howard Leder; and two sisters, Vernice Mason and June Leder.
Survivors are his wife of 70 years, Elda Trede Leder; one son, Lowell Leder and wife Susan of Ulm; two daughters, Sharon Leder of Allendale, Mich., and Margaret Schneider of Seymour, Ind.; two brothers, John Leder of Stuttgart and Lester Leder of Ulm; one sister, Frances Hinson of Stuttgart; five grandchildren; Laurie Sanders (Bill), Dale Leder (Cindy), Bert Leder (Farah), Jeff Schneider (Kristi) and Michelle Smith (Bryan); and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Johnny Graham, are 11 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church with burial in Ulm Cemetery
by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Turpin Funeral Home.

Sister Shirley Looper
Shirley Faye Hodges Looper, 69, of Stuttgart, widow of Rev. Buddy Looper, went to be with her Lord Sunday, May 3, 2009.
She was born June 29, 1939, in Wisner, La., to Homer and Ruth Hodges. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan David Looper; and a sister, Irene Parker.
Survivors are one sister, Lillian Hayes and husband Curtley of Meadville, Miss.; four children, Rev. Guy Looper and wife Lesa of Stuttgart, Kathryn Waddles and husband Billy of Scott, Ark., Claudia Harlin and husband Carl of Stuttgart and Rev. Homer Looper and wife Jodi of Silsbee, Texas, (and Randy Rankin and wife Sherrie); daughter-in-law, Rhonda Looper of Stuttgart; 12 grandchildren, Earl Looper and wife Heather, Eric and Lorene Looper, B.J. Waddles and wife Natasha, Kerri Uzzle and husband Brandon, John Looper and wife Lindie, Whitney Herring and husband Justin, Micki Michele Wallace, and Tammy, Tiffany, Teri and Toni Looper; and four great-grandchildren, Colton and Hannah Looper, Lilliauna Waddles and Lee Uzzle.
She married Rev. Buddy Looper in 1958 and moved to Stuttgart and became the pastor’s wife of Jesus Name Church of Christ. For 42 years, they faithfully labored together. Besides being the pastor’s wife, she was a homemaker, school teacher and mother to, not only her five children, but to a flood of other teens that stayed in her home. She dedicated her life to her church and to her children and grandchildren. She was an outstanding musician and singer and was an inspiration to everyone who met her. She will be greatly missed by not only her friends and family, but also by the community where she lived.
Funeral services, officiated by Bro. Guy Looper and Bro. Homer Looper, are 12 p.m. Tuesday at Jesus Name Church of Christ with burial following in Lone Tree Cemetery
by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart.
