Pauline Lorene Lammers Pauline Lorene Lammers, 87, of Hot Springs, formerly of Stuttgart, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Lammers was born on July 21, 1921 in McCrory, Ark., to John and Martha Armstrong. She was retired from Producers Rice Mill and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Clarence Lammers. Survivors are one son, Charles Lammers of Stuttgart; one step-son, Clarence A. Lammers of Lodsen, S.C.; two daughters, Carolyn Maier (Kenneth) of Stuttgart and Claudia Wilson of Hot Springs; one step-daughter, Clara Clark of Natchez, MS; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, Emanuel Lutheran Church by Pastor Glenn Larsen with burial in Lone Tree Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home. The family suggests that memorials be sent to Emanuel Lutheran Church. Mickey Ann Frizzell Mickey Ann Gingerich Frizzell, age 71, loving mother and devoted grandmother, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, as a result of a train-car accident. Mickey Ann was a lifelong resident of Stuttgart and a dedicated member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Mickey Ann was born June 27, 1937, to Milton and Bertha James Gingerich. She attended Concordia College and the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, obtaining a degree in early childhood education. Mickey Ann used that degree for 30 years as a teacher at St. John’s Lutheran School. She was a member of the Clara Kleinman Guild and the Altar Guild of St. John’s, was active in volunteer work with the Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie, the Red Hat Society, and loved playing bridge. Mickey Ann married Bobby Carroll Frizzell on Dec. 20, 1959, and they were married for 34 years. Mickey Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby; her parents, Milton and Bertha Gingerich; her brother, Joe Ronnie Gingerich; her in-laws, Edgar and Jessie Frizzell; and two nephews, Brady Frizzell and Eddie Payer. She is survived by her children, sons Sammy (Angie) Frizzell and Morgan (Beverly) Frizzell and daughter, Tammy (Stephen) Browning; grandchildren, Samantha Frizzell, Landon Frizzell, Beau Browning and Caleb Hall; sister, Nan Johnson; sisters-in-law, Gerry Gingerich, Martha Frizzell, Betty Payer and Pat Ables; brothers-in-law, Wayne Frizzell, Billy Payer and Tim Ables; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Jack Gillam and Pastor Jon Beyer, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Lone Tree Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Turpin Funeral Home. The family requests memorials be made to St. John’s Find-Us-Faithful Fund or ABCD Memorial Scholarship Fund. Cyril Paul Plafcan Cyril Paul Plafcan, 88, of Stuttgart departed this life on Monday, September 22, 2008. Mr. Plafcan, born June 30, 1920 in Slovak, Arkansas, was the eldest son of John J. and Maria Franko Plafcan. He attended Wylie Elementary School. Upon graduation from Subiaco Academy in 1939, he returned to Prairie County to pursue a lifelong career in farming. He was a lifelong member and faithful parishioner of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Slovak where he served as the first Parish Council President in 1973. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Slovak Council #3998, serving as Grand Knight, as well as other offices, and became an Honorary Life member. He served on the Stuttgart Grain Dryer Board of Directors for 23 years. He was also on the Boards of Directors for Prairie Farmers Association and Farm Bureau for many years. Mr. Plafcan officially retired from farming in 1985. Among his interests were his family and grandchildren, woodworking in his shop, and in the later years, “farming on a small scale” – his garden and yard work. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters: Veronica Plafcan, Sue Murawski, Mary Bodak, and Sister M. Cyrillus RSM; one brother, Johnnie S. Plafcan; and a grandson, Christopher Michael Hatfield. Cyril is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen Basler Plafcan; two daughters and their spouses, Rebecca P. Johnson (Sonny) of Slovak, and Jennifer P. Bowe (Ed) of Little Rock; one brother George J. Plafcan (Sue) of Slovak; two sisters, Frances P. Plafcan of Slovak and Sister Dorothy Ann Plafcan RSM of Little Rock. He has seven grandchildren: Sarah, Rick, and Katherine Hatfield, Reb, Ryan, Zachary, and Caitlin Bowe, and numerous nieces and nephews. Rosary will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 24th at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Slovak with visitation beginning at 5:30 p.m. Funeral services, officiated by Msgr. John A. Janesko, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, September 25th at Sts. Cyril and Methodius with burial at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart. Memorials may be made to Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church or a charity of your choice. Katherine Dyer Katherine Watkins Dyer, 86, of Stuttgart passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Crestpark in Stuttgart. Luther Watkins and Rosie Lee Wooldridge were married in Terrell, Texas at age 19 after traveling in a buggy to be married. They had three children including Katy who was born Oct. 25, 1921. George Edward Dyer and Minnie Lea Katherine Watkins met at the Cotton Belt Railway station in Clarendon, Ark., in 1946. Katy was working for the Cotton Belt Railway, staying with George’s aunt who lived only 1/2 blocks from George’s home. George had just gotten home from the Air Force after flying 51 missions in a B24 bomber from Venosa, Italy over European countries. Katy also worked at Fair Oaks, Ark., at the time riding the train to and from each station. Her hours at the Clarendon station were 3-11 p.m. not allowing any time for a normal day. Clarendon was located on the White River and George being a hunter from childhood, their first date was going snake and turtle hunting from the White River Bridge on a Sunday afternoon. They were married Dec. 14, 1946. Katy retired from the Cotton Belt Railway in 1983 after more than 39 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Stuttgart. Besides her husband George, she is survived by her son George Raymond Dyer and his wife Cherri Darlene, and their daughter, Rachael Darlene, all of Fort Worth, Texas. Funeral services, officiated by Dr. Sam Roberts, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Turpin Funeral Home chapel with burial following in Shady Grove Cemetery near Clarendon. Visitation will be from 5-7 Tuesday at Turpin Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Crandall Hagan, Calvin Warden, Steve Rawls, Walter Hillman, Vaughn Bennett and Jim Simpson. Honorary pallbearers are members of Beacon Sunday School class, and Ed Knight, Herman Yarbrough and Cleve Ferguson. The family requests memorials are made to the donor’s choice. Edith Mae Johnson Edith Mae Johnson, 90, of Humphrey, widow of Ollie Johnson, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Johnson was born April 29, 1918, to Robert Moore and Maggie Huffstuttlar Moore. She was a homemaker. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy Esquibel; brothers, Charles, Pete, Alvin and Bobby Moore; sister, Julia Maupin; granddaughter, Valerie Johnson; and great-great-granddaughter, Angie Ratterree. Survivors are three sons, Charles Johnson (LaVerne) of Humphrey, Jimmy Johnson (Irma) of Sacramento, Calif., and Donald Johnson (Margie) of Stuttgart; one daughter, Pat Quickel (William) of Reydel; four brothers, Billy Moore (Agnes) of Perryville and Kenneth Moore (Dorothy), David Moore (Alice) and Harold Moore (Ellen), all of Bigelow; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services, officiated by Bro. Burl Dycus, Bro. Joel Holmes and Bro. Guy Looper, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Turpin Funeral Home chapel. Burial will follow in Lone Tree Cemetery. Her grandsons will be pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Turpin Funeral Home. John L. Nichols John L. Nichols died Sept. 30, 2008, at Fort Roots – VA Hospital in North Little Rock, Ark. Nichols, a World War II veteran, proudly served his country in the North African Campaign. He was recognized as showing extraordinary heroism against an armed enemy in an attack at St. Cloud, Algeria. A tank driver in the First Armored Regiment, Nichols was badly wounded in the battle. In the confrontation, he lost an eye but earned the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart. Through his service he was also awarded the American Defense Service Medal and the Medal of Good Conduct. An avid sports fan, Nichols once enjoyed bowling, golf and coaching youth baseball. He was also a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. He is survived by his wife, Rita Nichols of the home; two sons, John D. Nichols and his wife, Rae-Lene Wolf-Nichols of North Little Rock and Ed Way and his wife, Dianna of Jonesboro. He also is survived by one daughter, Joyce Dempsey and her husband Jerry of Stuttgart. He leaves three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Nichols was preceded in death by six brothers, William Kavanaugh, Jarrell, Charles, Joseph, Billy Ray and Gene and two sisters, Naomi Nichols and Ruth Nichols Connor. The family would like to say a special “thank you” to Dr. Eddy Hord and the staff of Stuttgart Regional Medical Center and the entire medical staffs of McCellan and Fort Roots VA Hospitals in Little Rock.
