Richard L. Hutson Jr.

Richard Leon Hutson Jr., 51, of Austin died June 17, 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Robbin Crossland Hutson; a son, Richard; daughter, LeAnn; brother, Bryan Hutson; sister, Debbie Gammel; parents, Richard and Ann Hutson Sr.; and grandchildren, Olivia Hutson, and Ryan and Nicole Prince.
He was a member of Union Valley Baptist Church.

Funeral was Friday at Huson Funeral Home Chapel, Little Rock, with Rev. David Gammel and Rev. Emery Crossland officiating. Interment was in Salem Cemetery in Lonoke County.

Willie Lee Hicks

Willie Lee Hicks, 87, of Little Rock, died Thursday, June 20, 2003.

He was born in Lonoke. He worked from 1936 to 1950 for the S.P. Stiles family, who owned a cotton plantation in Scott. From 1950 to 1981 he worked for Crow Burlingame Company and the Crow and the Lord families.

Funeral graveside service was Wednesday, June 25, at Roselawn Memorial Park, Little Rock.

Memorials may be made to Arkansas Hospice. Cremation arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home.

John H. Stone Jr.

John H. “Jack” Stone Jr., 73, a resident of Pine Bluff died Monday, June 23, 2003.

He went to work for the Cotton Belt Railroad in 1949, retiring in 1989 as a train dispatcher. He was a member and deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Pine Bluff. He attended Shell Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Sahara Shrine Temple; the Robert E. Lee Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, in Altheimer; the Little Rock Valley of Scottish Rite Masonry; a 32nd Degree Mason; and a member of Union Chapter #40, Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of the American Train Dispatchers Association.

He is survived by two sons, Major John H. Stone III, USAF (Ret.) of Cabot, and the Rev. Dr. Ronald E. Stone of Hoover, Ala.; one daughter, Amy M. Hoover of Sheridan; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were June 25, at the First Presbyterian Church in Pine Bluff with Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors in charge. Burial was in Brown Cemetery.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 3100 Samford Ave., Shreveport, La. 71103.

Charlie Thomas Bates

Charlie Thomas Bates, age 76, of North Little Rock, died June 18, 2003.
He was born in Lonoke County.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Judy Blackwood Bates; two daughters, Linda Day of Posey, Calif., and Carole Vestal of North Little Rock; two grandchildren and two great-grand children; four brothers, Ben F. Bates, Jr. and Neil F. Bates of Morrilton, Chester E. Bates of North Little Rock, and Fred J. Bates of Dallas, Texas.

He served in the Navy SeaBees in World War II from October 1943 to May 1946, receiving many medals and awards, including the Purple Heart. He was employed by Western Auto for 10 years, and at Haverty’s Furniture Company, serving as Vice President and General Manager of Davidson’s, a division of Haverty’s. He was named the Arkansas Furniture Association Retailer of the year in 1971. In 1977, he received the Award of Merit in Retail Marketing from the National Research Bureau. In 1982, he received the Arkansas Road Runner Award as Arkansas Furniture Dealer of the Year. In 1984, he received the Outstanding Merchant Award given by Broyhill Furniture Company. He was a member of both the Arkansas Furniture Association and the Seventh Street Furniture Association. In 1988, Chuck joined Rock City Furniture in Public Relations where he was active until 1999.

Funeral services were June 21, in the Chapel of Griffin Leggett Rest Hills, North Little Rock. Burial was in Lonoke Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

John Peter Simone

John Peter Simone of North Little Rock died June 19, 2003, at the age of 70.
He was a staff sergeant for 23 years with the Air National Guard. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors are his wife of 16 years, Evelyn Simone; stepson Jason Cates of Cabot; son, Larry Simone, and daughter, Tina Simone, of North Little Rock; two daughters, Mary McGriff of Star City and Veronica Simone of Little Rock; and two grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held June 21, at Immaculate Conception Church, North Little Rock, with interment at Rest Hills Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made in his honor to the Immaculate Conception Athletic Fund, 7000 J.F.K. Blvd, North Little Rock, Ark. 72116.

Hilda Bailey

Hilda Bailey, 79, died June 18, 2003.

She was a lifelong resident of Keo.

Survivors: three sons, James Bailey, Mabelvale, Larry Bailey, Cabot, and Michael Bailey, Keo; five daughters, Mary Harris and Ruby Maggard, Furlow, Linda Morrison, Fort Smith, Darlene Burrow, Benton, and Joann Shaddon, North Little Rock; three sisters, Reva Glover and Audrey Steveson, Conway, and Joyce Phillips, Carlisle; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three greatgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral services, Wilson Funeral Home in England, June 20. Burial, Keo Cemetery.

Roy Lee Garland

Roy Lee Garland, age 72, of Cabot died Tuesday, June 17, 2003.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in both the Navy and Air Force.
Surviving are his wife, Irene Beazley Garland; his mother, Nellie Garland of Austin; three sons, Richard Garland of Cabot, Marvin Garland of Vilonia and Gregory Garland of Cabot; one daughter, Cheryl Flor of Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; four brothers, Donald Garland of Tupelo, Jimmy Tommy Garland and Charles Garland, both of Austin, and Larry Garland of Scranton; one sister, Bobbye Jean Theiring of Cabot.

Funeral was Friday, June 20, at Westbrook Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Beebe Cemetery.

Mildred V. Welch

Mildred Virginia Cates Welch, age 81, died June 16, 2003.

She is survived by her son, Hal Welch of Carlisle; a sister, Jean Boyette of Oklahoma.

Graveside services were held at Carlisle Cemetery with arrangements by Boyd Funeral Home, Lonoke.

Ruby Frances Holt

Ruby Frances Holt, 58, of Sheridan, died Sunday.

She taught school in Sheridan for 20 years. From 1986 until 1990 she owned and operated Keep and Teach Day Care in Sheridan.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; three sons, Scott Holt of Newport, Va., Shea Holt of Little Rock, Shawn Holt of New Orleans, La.; two brothers, Gary Goode of Wright, and Harry Goode of Sheridan; six sisters, Georgia King of Sheridan, Ann Davis of Carlisle, Nancy Buckingham of Bryant, Joy Leatherwood and Kay Whitehead of Hot Springs, Teddy Carr of Searcy.

Services were June 21, at Buie Funeral Chapel, Sheridan.

Family requests memorials be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, Ga. 30368-2454.

W.J. McCarley

W.J. “Dick” McCarley, 76, died June 18, 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Ada; son, Dickie McCarley of Cabot; daughter, Leanne Prichard of Heber Springs.

Memorial service will be in Bokchito, Okla. Arrangements by Cabot Funeral Home.
