George Fisher
George Fisher, whose rustic cartoons about politics and government attracted a multitude of followers in Arkansas and nationally, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at his home at Little Rock.
Fisher died at his drawing board after finishing his weekly cartoon for the Arkansas Times and another cartoon for the Christmas week issue. He was 80.
Though he never syndicated his cartoons, preferring to draw mostly about Arkansas affairs, he was acclaimed as one of the great cartoonists of the 20th century. A number of his cartoons were widely reprinted, notably a cartoon he drew on the occasion of the Challenger space disaster.
Fisher didn¹t become a regular newspaper cartoonist until he was about 40, when he started drawing cartoons for the weekly North Little Rock Times, but when his cartoons began to appear regularly in the Arkansas Gazette in 1964 he developed a huge following. He would become an institution and almost the personification of the Arkansas Gazette, the oldest newspaper west of the Mississippi River..
