Bruce Lee Murphy

JONESBORO — Bruce Lee Murphy, 90, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Born at Jonesboro to the late Arthur and Bessie Murphy, he graduated from Caraway Central High School in 1937. A longtime farmer in Caraway, he moved to Memphis in 1965, then relocated to Jonesboro in 1996.

He enjoyed TV sporting events and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a great friend to all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene Wood Murphy of the home; three daughters, Norma Emison of Jonesboro, Linda Pyland of Caraway and Wanda Wonigar of Horn Lake, Miss.; a son, Keith Murphy of Germantown, Tenn.; a daughter-in-law, Freddie Lee Murphy of Caraway; two stepdaughters, Neva Brickell of Jonesboro and Mary Ann Christmas of Paragould; two stepsons, Harold Wood of Jennison, Mich., and Eddie Wood of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Terry Pyland and Lynn Pyland, both of Caraway, Karen Wallace of Monette, Kelly Benson of Jonesboro, Michelle Emery of Caraway and Kara Woodiel of Lake Cormorant, Miss.; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Booth Murphy; a son, Gerald Wayne Murphy; grandson, Lee Pyland; four brothers; and three sisters.

A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in Gregg Funeral Home at Jonesboro with Mike Johnson and Elder John Sawyer III officiating. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 in Gregg Funeral Home at Jonesboro.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Terry Pyland, Lynn Pyland, Mike Wallace, Bradley Wallace, Dallas Benson, Kyle Priest, Merritt Emery, Michael Emery and Kenny Woodiel.

Lasting memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or charity of choice.

Elva I. Stewart

LAKE CITY — Elva Stewart, 89, died Sunday, Oct. 5.

She was born Oct. 24, 1918, at Monette to the late John and Mary Bronaugh.

Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Taylor of Lake City; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Orville Stewart; a son, Orville Stewart Jr. “Wink”; two sisters; and three brothers.

A graveside service will be today at 3 p.m. in Macey Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Reed officiating under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home of Monette.

Alton A. Stracener

KEISER — Alton A. Stracener, 72, of Keiser entered into rest Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at his home.

Born Tuesday, May 5, 1936, at Humnoke to the late Grover and Lillie Stracener, and stepmother Jean Stracener, he was a member of Keiser Full Gospel Church, retired after 30 years of service in the United States Marine Corps, and was a welder and mechanic.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Stracener of Keiser; three sons, Anthony “Tony” Stracener of Oceanside, Calif., William “Bill” Stracener of Keiser and Millard “Muff” Stracener of Sydney; three daughters, Lucilla “Sissy” Reams of Jonesboro, Norma “Susie” Stracener of Boston and Laura Stracener of Keiser; four sisters, Frances Browder of Texas, Jeanette Eanes of England, Ark., Telitha Selskin of Scottsdale and Johnnie Dale Stracener of Osceola; four brothers, Tommy Stracener of Jonesboro, Grover Lee Stracener and Larry Stracener, both of Blytheville, and William Stracener of Mountain Home; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Eric Stracener; one brother, Landis Stracener; and one sister, Janice Bell.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday in Roller-Swift Chapel at Osceola with Jerry Weathers offciating. Burial will follow in Mississippi County Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 6-9 tonight in Roller-Swift Funeral Home.

Kenneth Abney

KENNETT, Mo. — Kenneth Earl Abney, 65, of Kennett passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center at Kennett.

He was born Oct. 2, 1943, at St. Louis and was the son of the late George Willard and Flora Mildred Miller Abney.

Survivors include one brother, Gaylon Abney; and three sisters, Jean Dunlap, Rose Williams and Donna Hunt.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel. Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott will be in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation is Monday at 6 p.m. in the funeral home.

Norman Clarence Calvin

RECTOR — Jack Calvin, 72, of Rector passed away at his residence Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008.

He was born to the late Everett “Slats” and Blanche McLain Calvin on April 4, 1936, at Marmaduke. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin sister, Addie “Jill” Calvin; and one daughter, Kristie McConnell.

Jack is survived by his wife, Jayne Duffel Calvin; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Allicia and Robert Wiseman of Wyoming, Courtney Calvin of Rector, and Kaycee and Tracy Glasgow of Paragould; one brother, Joe Calvin of Paragould; three sisters, Donna McGovern of Mississippi, Trisha Vangilder of Louisiana and Karen King of Texas; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Heim, Mandi Kimble, Candi Franks, Kaylee Calvin, Addie Parrish, Jack Henry and Jillian Glasgow; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. in Irby Funeral Home at Rector with Marston Carpenter officiating. Interment will be in Woodland Heights Cemetery.

Cecil Paul Cochran

BAY — Cecil Paul Cochran, 93, of Bay died Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

Cecil was born on Jan. 22, 1915, in Randolph County. He was a decorated veteran of World War II, serving from 1942-1945 in the European Theater from Normandy to Germany. He worked as a carpenter and at Barton’s Lumber Co. He was a member of Bay Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Phillips Cochran; two daughters, Kay French of Jonesboro and Amy Nicole Poyner of Bay; a stepdaughter, Loretta McReynolds of Rock Island, Ill.; two stepsons, William Charles Woodward of Black Rock and Denny Woodward of Okean; three sisters, Wanda Lee Martin of Bay, Lois Grant of Trumann and Lovis Fultz of Bay; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and many stepgrandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, L.G.B. and Johnnie Cochran; his first wife, Lois Cochran; two sisters; and four brothers.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Langford-Bookout Funeral Home chapel with Marvin Rickett officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kyle French, Gary Cochran, Kevin Cochran, Ronnie Harrison, Brad Bartelt and J.L. Poyner.

They will be receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

Mary Lou Dunbar-Turley

OZARK ACRES — Mary Lou Dunbar-Turley, 70, of Ozark Acres died Saturday, Oct. 11, at St. Bernards Medical Center at Jonesboro.

Mary was retired from Western Electric, a homemaker and of the Church of Christ faith.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Robin Propes of West Paducah, Ky.; sisters, Carolyn Garner and Shirley Murphy of Hardy, Barbara Matlock of Yorkville, Ill., and Jean Keiser of Knox, Ind.; and grandchildren, Will and Caleigh Propes.

Funeral service will be in Heath Oak Hill Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday with Joel Harris officiating. Burial in Baker Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time.

Archie Dean Frazier

WALNUT RIDGE — Archie Frazier, 61, died Friday, Oct. 10, at his residence.

Having lived most of his life in Walnut Ridge, he was a retired U.S. Marine and a member of Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Archibald and Geneva Smith Frazier; and sister, Barbara Jean Stephens.

Survivors include a daughter, Tonya of North Little Rock; sisters, Nancy Mabry and Martha Harris of Jonesboro, Peggy Tinsley and Patsy Foley of Hoxie, and Mary Liscomb of Walnut Ridge; brothers, Larry Frazier of Hoxie and Johnny Frazier of Walnut Ridge; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in House-Gregg Funeral Home of Walnut Ridge with Joe McMasters officiating. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Monday night from 6-8 in the funeral home.

Mary Ann Goldsmith

PARAGOULD — Mary Ann Goldsmith, 72, of Paragould passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008.

She was born Aug. 6, 1936, at Wardell, Mo., to Emery and Janette Huffman.

She is survived by five sons, J.R. Warren of Paragould, W.L. Warren of Lafe, Jessie Warren of Jonesboro, Winford Elliott Warren of Lafe and Ralph Warren of Jonesboro; four daughters, Opal Arronsman, Shelia Simmons and Tracy Goss, all of Paragould, and Phyllis Greenway of Jonesboro; 37 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; four brothers; and three sisters.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Phillip Goldsmith; two daughters, Robin Simons and Catherine Joyce Warren; one brother; and one sister.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 tonight in Phillips Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Center Hill Chapel at Phillips Funeral Home with Rick Bibbs officiating. Interment will be in Pine Log Cemetery.

Her children will serve as pallbearers.
