Mildred Duke

PIGGOTT — Mildred Rhea Duke, 86, of Piggott passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008.

She was born Feb. 22, 1922, at Franklin, the daughter of the late Victor Green Redman and Mae Rose Royles.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Roy Thompson and Onas Duke; her son, Roy Thompson Jr.; six brothers; and one sister.

She is survived by one daughter, Julia Jean Parks of Jonesboro; grandson, Shawn Parks; granddaughter, Lisa Parks; and two sisters.

Graveside services are in Piggott Cemetery today at 2 p.m. with Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott in charge of arrangements.

Edmond Grubbe

JONESBORO — Edmond Grubbe, 78, of Jonesboro died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at his home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Lyman Hagen

JONESBORO — Dr. Lyman B. Hagen, 86, of Jonesboro died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at St. Bernards Medical Center at Jonesboro.

Born at Austin, Minn., and raised in Everett, Wash., Dr. Hagen lived in Washington before moving to Jonesboro in 1969. He was a professor emeritus of English at Arkansas State University and retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of lieutenant col­onel.

Dr. Hagen was a World War II veteran and had 30 years’ total active and reserve military service.

Dr. Hagen earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Washington and a Ph. D. from the University of Portland. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at Jonesboro and a member of American Association of University Professors. He was a founding member and past president of the ASU chapter of the AAUP. He held memberships in military Officers of America Association, American Legion, Elks, VFW and Friends of the Library.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia “Pat” Hagen.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Theresa Louise “Terry” and David Bullock of Columbus, Ohio; brother, Alvin G. “Gerald” Hagen of Albuquerque, N.M.; granddaughter, Elizabeth Louise “Ellie” Bullock of Columbus; nephew, Mark; and four nieces, Janet, Carol, Joan and Jean.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Mark Wood officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at Everett.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 in Emerson Funeral Home followed by a rosary service at 7.

For lasting memorials, the family asks that consideration be given to the Dr. Lyman B. and Patricia L. Hagen Endowment, c/o Craighead County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 4033, Jonesboro 72403.

Larry Wayne Holladay

JONESBORO — Larry Wayne Holladay, 57, died Saturday, July 19, 2008.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are entrusted to Gregg Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Justin Bradley Lindley

SHERWOOD — Justin Bradley Lindley, 28, of Sherwood, formerly of Jonesboro, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008.

He was born Aug. 13, 1979, in Jonesboro. Justin was a free spirit, loved his music, his preppy clothes and his children. Most of all, Justin loved life — in his words, “Don’t see the exterior of society on us, but see the light that shines in every one of our souls.”

He is survived by his children, Austin Lindy of Sherwood and Jaycie Lindley of Cabot; mother and stepfather, Teresa Bradley Jacobs and Terry of Sherwood; father and stepmother, Ron and Connie Lindley of Jonesboro; brother, Tyler Jacobs of Austin; sisters, Jill Jacobs of Sherwood and Amber Lindley of Jonesboro; sister and brother-in-law, Shalla and Eddie Wilbanks of Jonesboro; grandmother, Etta Bradley of Jonesboro; stepgrandparents, George and Patricia Jacobs of Melbourne, Fla.; and nephew, Kael Wilbanks of Jonesboro.

He is also survived by the mothers of his children, fiancée Stacey Cody of Cabot and Robi Stevens of Sherwood. He leaves behind special friends, Ron and Terry Cody of Cabot.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eldridge Bradley, Morris and Mildred Lindley, all of Jonesboro.

The family requests and Justin would want you to attend his service in casual dress, so please dress comfortably.

The family will receive friends in Huson Funeral Home, 7700 Highway 107, from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Huson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Arkansas Memorial Gardens.

Norman Roy Moore

BROOKLAND — Norman Roy Moore, 71, of Brookland died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

He was born at Lake City and lived in Brookland most of his life. He was owner and operator of Brookland Septic Tank at Brookland, member of Brookland Church of Christ and a Navy veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Nina Moore; and two brothers, Jerry and Bobby Moore.

Survived by son, Jason Moore and wife Sherry of Black Rock; two daughters, Charlotte Marks of Eagan, Minn., and Rhonda Mann and husband Bob of San Francisco; brother, Freeman Moore of Riverside, Calif.; two sisters, Nola Houston of Jonesboro and Connie Smith of Southaven, Miss.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral service and burial will be private.

Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Tuesday in Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Virgie Scott

HOLLY, Mich. — Virgie R. “Robbie” Scott, 74, of Holly died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Genesys Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, Mich., with the Rev. Jim Reid officiating and burial in Crestwood Cemetery at Grand Blanc, Mich.

Those desiring may make contributions to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. Thursday until time of the service in the funeral home.

Virgie was born at Marmaduke on Oct. 28, 1933, the daughter of the late Shelby and Lucendia Lacewell. She was a resident of the Flint area for 34 years before retiring to Rector in 1988. She married Doyne E. Scott on March 12, 1954, at Rector.

She was active in playing music and singing at community centers in her home vicinity and centers all over Northeast Arkansas and the Flint area.

Surviving are her loving husband, Doyne; five daughters, Sheron and husband Rocky Piccobotta of Flint, Darlene and husband Stephen Beebe of Holly, Brenda and husband Craig Defoy of Flint, Laura and husband Alan Culp of Las Vegas and Genie Scott of Holly; grandchildren, David Beebe of Holly, Mandi and husband Scott Hatchew of Flint, Martina Piccobotta and fiance Paul Gonzales, all of Montrose, Mich., Erika Guldi of Holly, Katie Rutherford of Flint, Jennifer Defoy of Warren, Mich., and Stacie Defoy of Flint; five great-grandchildren, Madison, Nicholas, Makenzi, Anthony and Devin; brothers, Quinton and wife Sally Lacewell of Mount Morris, Mich., Shelby and wife Renee Lacewell of Millington, Mich., and Danny Lacewell of Holly; sisters, Berniece Sexton of Canton, N.C., and Freda and husband Larry Hayes of Asheville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Erma Cardwell and Cindy Gillenwater.

Richard E. Smith

JONESBORO — Richard E. Smith, 61, of Jonesboro died Saturday, July 19, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

Born at Pontiac, Mich., he lived in Jonesboro for the last 18 years. He was retired from Box Board Packing Co. and a member of Central Baptist Church.

He is survived by three brothers, Tim Smith of Norwalk, Ohio, Roy Smith and Don Smith, both of Jonesboro; and sister, Brenda Swartz of Norwalk.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ruby Smith.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Gibson Cemetery with Wynndel King officiating.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home.

Bobby Ray Thomas

LEACHVILLE — Bobby Ray Thomas, 77, of Leachville died Saturday, July 19, at Methodist University Hospital at Memphis.

Born at the Silverdale community near Arbyrd, Mo., he was the son of the late Dennis Alexander and Madge Layne Thomas and had been a Leachville resident since 1961.

Ray was a well-known businessman who, along with his wife, owned and operated several grocery stores and restaurants in Leachville for many years. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Ray had many hobbies including golf, gardening and a special interest in hummingbirds. However, his true passion was his family and spending time with them.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Wayne Thomas; and his brother-in-law, Bob Looney.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Anna Beth Mallo­y Thomas of the home; daughter, Candice Denny and husband Larry of Leachville; brother, Dennis Thomas and wife Linda of Arbyrd; two sisters, Jo Nell Malloy and husband Doc of Leachville and Bette Carroll and husband Raymond of Senath, Mo.; his sister-in-law and special helpmate, Maryln Looney of Leachville; uncle, R.J. Thomas of Senath; two grandchildren, Amanda McFall and husband Darrin of Leachville, and Blake Denny and wife Lauren of Bay; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew, Brady and Sophia McFall.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Leachville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Rudy Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Leachville Cemetery under the direction of Howard Funeral Service of Leachville.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 in the funeral home.
