Lila Mae Hughes
JONESBORO -- Lila Mae Hughes, 94, former resident of Jonesboro, died Thursday, Jan. 4, in Wesley Medical Center at Hattiesburg, Miss., where she resided at Hattiesburg Convalescent Center.
She was born in Ravenden Springs on April 18, 1912. A high school graduate of Cash and school teacher for a short time, she later retired from the U.S. Postal Service at the Nettleton Office and was a member of the National Retired Federal Employees organization.
She loved working with people and will be remembered for her devoted services throughout the Mount Zion Association, Southern Baptist University in Walnut Ridge, where she served as dorm matron, Central Baptist Church and as a member of Nettleton Baptist Church, where her father, the Rev. L.G. Miller, was a former pastor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe Hughes, former postmaster and mayor of Nettleton; parents, L.G. and Maudie Miller; one sister, Goldia Jones; one son, Jim Burden; and one son-in-law, Rex Watkins.
Survivors include one sister, Sylvia Cantrell of Benton; one son, Bob Hughes and his wife Maxine of Nesbit, Miss.; two daughters, Betty Watkins of Jacksonville, Fla., and Sue Hopkins and her husband of Hattiesburg, Miss.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, in Langford-Bookout Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth R. Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow in Nettleton Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. today at Langford Funeral Home.
Honored to serve as active pallbearers are Dan Holmes, George Stem, Max Alexander, Ralph Morrison, Jim Lane and Bob Mooneyham.
Honorary pallbearers are Eddie Taylor, H.B. Holt, Tommy Carter, Fred Ruby, Don Carver and Gary Watkins.

Herman Ray Simpson
JONESBORO -- Herman Ray Simpson, 59, of Jonesboro died Friday, Jan. 5, in Methodist University Hospital in Memphis.
He was born in Jonesboro on July 1, 1947, to U.W. and Dorothy Simpson. He was an employee of General Electric Co. in Jonesboro and a 2-tour U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Simpson of Jonesboro; two daughters, Remona Beall and Latosha Hill, both of Jonesboro; two sons, Shaun Simpson Jurjens of Fountain, Colo., and Thomas Ray Mayhall of Knoxville, Tenn.; five brothers, J.W. Simpson, Robert Simpson, Raymond Simpson and John Simpson all of Jonesboro, and Mike Simpson of South Carolina; three sisters, Linda Brown of Strawberry, Susan Bounds of Jonesboro and Sandy Bell of Memphis; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, U.W. Simpson; one brother, Francis Whitaker; and one sister.
Funeral services will be held in Langford-Bookout Funeral Home Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. with Gary Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Log Cemetery
at Brookland.
Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 8, from 6-8 p.m. in Langford-Bookout Funeral Home, 1900 Washington Ave. Langford-Bookout Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Lillie Mae Choate Young
TYRONZA -- Lillie Mae Choate Young, 92, died Friday, Jan. 5.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Melvin Young.
Survivors include one son, Edward H. Young of Tyronza; three daughters, Shelba Stevenson of West Memphis, Carolyn Huckle of Naples, Fla., and Mary Brown of Cordova, Tenn.; three sisters, Clara E. Bearden of Marked Tree, Mary Tucker of Abilene, Texas, and Viola Childers of Memphis; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation is today from 4-8 p.m. in Roller-Citizens Funeral Home at West Memphis and Monday in Marked Tree Church of God at 11 a.m. with the funeral following at 1 p.m.
Kathryn Virginia Bolding
BLACK ROCK -- Kathryn Virginia Bolding, 82, died Thursday in North Little Rock.
She was a homemaker and had lived in Black Rock for 49 years, moving there from Smithville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Noel Wesley Bolding, who died in 1979; her parents, John and Zella Mae Cummings; a daughter, Palutta Johnson; and a sister, Bonnie Self.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Lou Bolding of Dallas, Debbie Thatcher and husband Larry of Imboden, Diane Tribble and husband Rick of Jonesboro, Sharon Lowery and husband Gary of Bald Knob; son, Michael Bolding and wife Lori of Mountain Home; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in Smithville Baptist Church with Harold Russell and Keith Marlin officiating and will be under the direction of House-Gregg Funeral Home of Walnut Ridge. Burial will follow in Old Bethel Cemetery
near Smithville.
Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. in the funeral home.
Charles Leo Cooper
JONESBORO -- Charles "Chuck" Leo Cooper, 77, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007 in his home.
He was born at Jonesboro and lived in California for many years before returning to Jonesboro in 1992. He served in the Navy during the 
Korean War and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Aden Cooper and Rollie Brust Taylor Cooper; and three brothers, Junior Lee Cooper, Frank F. Taylor and Barnie W. Taylor.
He is survived by his wife, Jeannette Cooper of the home; two sons, David G. Cooper of Carson City, Nev., and Dennis L. Cooper of Fernley, Nev. Also surviving are two daughters, Deborah K. Cooper of Hayward, Calif., and Ramona S. Hosman of Tracy, Calif.; one brother, James M. Cooper of Cheyenne, Wyo.; one sister, Essie L. Zeitler of San Antonio; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today in Emerson Memorial Chapel. Burial will be private with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
There will be no visitation.
Evelyn Pearce James
JONESBORO -- Evelyn Pearce James, 88, of Jonesboro, died of natural causes on Monday, Jan. 8, 2007 in Jonesboro Healthcare Center.
The daughter of Clay and Blanche Dunn Pearce, she was born at Hoxie where she graduated high school in 1937. She became one of the first civilian employees at the Pentagon in 1942.
She later came back to work for the War Department at Memphis and then Jonesboro, where she met and married Julian C. James, a longtime Jonesboro businessman and civic leader, in 1946.
They later operated Julian's Ladies Wear on Main Street for many years. She married James Skeen in 1975. She was a member of Eastern Star, UCT and First Baptist Church.
Evelyn is survived by a son, Julian Wilson James of Fayetteville; a brother and sister-in-law, Woodrow "Woody" Pearce and Madeleine of Glendale, Calif., three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a nephew, Phillip Pearce; and a friend and caregiver, Mary Kelley of Jonesboro.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a daughter, Renee James Jackson (July 3, 2006); and two infant children who died on Christmas Days, 1947 and 1954.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Langford-Bookout Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Emil Williams officiating.
The family will be receiving friends from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday in the funeral home.
Memorial may be made to the First Baptist Church building fund or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis 38105-1942
Tammy Louwayne Pierce
OSCEOLA -- Tammy Louwayne Pierce, 39, died Jan. 10, 2007.
She was a reporter for the Osceola Times and member of Midway Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, David Pierce; daughters, Kelli Pierce and Gracie Pierce; and son, Spencer Pierce, all of Osceola; parents, Jerry and Peggy Sellars; brother, Kevin Sellars; and grandmother, Mabelle Hart, all of Keiser.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Wilson Funeral Home at Osceola with burial in Mississippi County Memorial Gardens. Alvin Wilbanks will officiate.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Kermit Riggs
POUGHKEEPSIE -- Kermit Riggs, 80, of Poughkeepsie died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007 at Batesville.
He was born Sept. 4, 1926 at Manila to Logan and Elizabeth Dawson Riggs. He was a disabled Army veteran and member of Peaceful Harbor Pentecostal Church at Batesville.
Funeral services will begin Saturday at 2 p.m. in Qualls Funeral Home Chapel at Cave City. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery
located east of Cave City with arrangements by Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today.
Marie Saines
FORREST CITY -- Marie Saines, 76, of Forrest City died Thursday in her residence.
The treasurer of the Forrest City Baptist Church, she was a lifetime resident of Colt in St. Francis County.
Survivors include her son, McKinley Watson of Little Rock; one daughter, Houston Cobb of Colt; one brother, Tannie Saines of St. Louis; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church at Caldwell with the Rev. Rickey Benson officiating.
Burial will follow in Clark Cemetery
at Caldwell.
Visitation will be today from 5-7 p.m. in Woodard Funeral Chapel at Wynne.
