Walter Will Bryant
November 14, 1918 - April 20, 2004
Walter Will Bryant of Hot Springs, formerly of Pine Bluff, passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 20, 2004.
He was born November 14, 1918, in Cornerstone, Arkansas, to Will and Elizabeth Embree Bryant. He was reared and received his early education in Cornerstone, Arkansas.
Inducted into the U.S. Army in July 1942, he served in the Central European Theater attached to the 3rd U.S. Army of General George Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded four bronze battle stars for his service and was honorably discharged in December 1945. Walter married Juanita Grisham on September 14, 1946 in Altheimer. With his wife, he operated Walnita Farms near Altheimer, Arkansas, from 1947 until his retirement in 1993. As a farmer, he served on the ASCS Committee for Jefferson County for fifteen years, the Farmers Home Administration Board and the Levee District #3 Board. He and his wife were selected as the Farm Family of the Year for the Southeast District in 1993.
As an avid hunter, he was a charter member of the Swan Lake Duck Club, a forty-two year member of the Mozart Hunting Club, and an honorary member of the Shady Oaks Duck Club. He was featured in the Arkansas Duck Hunter's Almanac published in 1998. In addition, in 1995 the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission dedicated the new Walter Will Bryant / Cannon Brake Water Control Structure in the Bayou Meto Wildlife Management Area.
He was a long-time member of the Reydel Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Cletus Bryant; and two sisters, Pearl Bryant and Elizabeth Bryant.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Juanita Grisham Bryant of Hot Springs; three daughters, Gail Bryant of Hot Springs, Wilda Chadick and her husband Bitsy and Phyllis Norris and her husband Larry all of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; one brother, Archie Bryant and his wife Lurene of Little Rock; four sisters, Ethel Mullikin and Nora McPherson both of Pine Bluff, Mary Katherine Stephens and her husband Donnie of York, Pennsylvania, and Norma Tomlin of Altheimer, Arkansas; three grandsons, Trevor Norris and his wife Kim of Washington, D.C., Walter Chadick and Jess Chadick both of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and one granddaughter, Ellen Norris Hill and her husband Chris of Little Rock, Arkansas.
Funeral services will be Friday, April 23, 2004 at 10:30 AM at Lakeside United Methodist Church in Pine Bluff with the Rev. Jim Benfer and Rev. George Williams officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery
in Hot Springs at 3:00 PM. Visitation will be Friday morning from 9:30 until service time at the church.

Buster Fred ( Buck ) Godbold
January 28, 1925 - December 16, 2001
B. F. "Buck" Godbold, 76, of Pine Bluff died Sunday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. He was born January 28, 1925 at Cotton Plant, Arkansas to the late Horace Howell and Myrtle May Hicks Godbold. Mr. Godbold was reared and educated in Lake Village where he attended school.
He moved to Texas as a young man where he went to work for Miller Construction as a service man on oil wells. He worked mainly in Midland and Odessa, Texas. Mr. Godbold retired in December of 1986.
He married the former Louise Elizabeth Wallace on June 14, 1979 in Odessa, Texas.
Mr. Godbold was a Baptist by faith.
Mr. Godbold was preceded in death by his wife; Louise Elizabeth Wallace Godbold, daughter; Glenda Sue Clever, sister; Betty Ford, and a grandchild.
He is survived by his sons; John Godbold of Pine Bluff, Terry Davis of Pana, Illinois, daughter; Cathy Adkins of Pensacola, Florida, sisters; Vera Weathers of Slidell, Louisiana, Sue Warren of Eudora, Arkansas, Glenda Cotner of Pine Bluff, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several stepchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, 6 to 8 PM at Ralph Robinson's. The funeral service will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, December 19, 2001, Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son with Reverend Lex Eaker officiating. Burial will be in Lee Cemetery.
Faye Morgan Bolin
November 30, 1917 - April 21, 2004
Mrs. Faye Bolin, age 86, of Pine Bluff, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at the White Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born November 30, 1917, in Pope County, a daughter of the late Henry and Luecinda Burkhead Morgan.
Mrs. Bolin was reared and received her education in Pope County. She met Mr. Willie "Bill" Bolin in Pope County and they were married October 26, 1932 in Keo, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1966.
She had spent most of her life in Sherrill, Arkansas and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sherrill and a retired employee of Jefferson Regional Medical Center where she worked in the Snack Bar (now the Cafeteria) from 1966 to 1982.
Mrs. Bolin was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Barbara Davis; one brother; two sisters and one grandson, Michael Ray Talley.
She is survived by three sons, Willie Bolin, Jr. of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, T. J. Bolin of Sherrill and Billy Bolin of Pine Bluff; three daughters, Nina Talley of Shallowater, Texas, Joyce Kalkbrenner of Pine Bluff and Linda Lindsey of Van Buren; one sister, Mae Bolin of Beebe; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, April 23, 2004, at two o'clock in the afternoon at the First Baptist Church of Sherrill by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with the Reverend Hollis McDermott officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery
in Pine Bluff.
Martha Young Allison
November 16, 1937 - April 30, 2004
Martha Louise Young Allison, 66, of Pine Bluff, died Friday, April 30, 2004 in El Dorado, Arkansas. Martha was born in Malvern, Arkansas, in 1938, to Gordon Elmo and Elizabeth Gregg Young. She grew up in Pine Bluff and attended school there. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Lynchburg, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. She received her Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff. Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Cecil Duke Allison, Jr.; son, Gordon Young Allison (Susan) of Fayetteville; daughter, Catherine Anne Allison Atkinson (Drew) of Pine Bluff; beloved grandchildren Allison Bess Atkinson, Andrew William Atkinson, Gordon Young Allison, Jr., and Garland Howard Allison. She is preceded in death by sister Bettyed Young Newbern (David), and survived by sisters Catherine Young Cockrill (Howard), and Virginia Anne Young, both of Little Rock. Other survivors are aunt, Edna Earle Pence (Mrs. Richard) of Conway; uncle Paul B. Young (Marcella) of Pine Bluff; nieces and nephews, D. Gordon Newbern (Linda), Murry Aspesi, George Newbern (Marietta), John Newbern (Jennifer), Elizabeth Cockrill Ward (Bob), Ashley Cockrill O'Neill (Josh), Howard Gregg Cockrill, Jeffrey Morgan Young, Patrick Hobbs Allison, Jr., William Phillips Allison (Laurie); brother-in-law Patrick Hobbs Allison (Nell).
Martha was a lifetime resident of Pine Bluff, a member of First United Methodist Church, and civic leader. She was past president of the Pine Bluff Junior League, a member of the Planning Commission and founding member of the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas. A member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, she was a teacher and professional artist. She created the first art department at White Hall High School.
Martha had a lifelong love of learning and shared her talents and knowledge with countless students, friends and family members. She loved to cook and carried forward the tradition of Muddie's famous homemade bread. Relatives, close friends and acquaintances were all known as "Shug" and her humorous storytelling entertained all who knew her. She enjoyed the priceless quality, that all people, regardless of age, loved to be around her.
Martha, like her mother, had the spiritual gift of mercy and her generosity and kindness to others in need was legendary. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter-in-law and confidante and wisely mentored her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews until the day she died. With all of her talents, gifts and accomplishments, her consistent theme and calling card was and still is 1 Corinthians 13:13 (But now faith, hope, love abide these three; but the greatest of these is love). She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.
Services are at First United Methodist Church, Pine Bluff, at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 3, by Ralph Robinson & Son (Online register: www.ralphrobinsonandson.com). Committal service is at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Shadowlawn Cemetery, Malvern. The family will be at #4 Longmeadow, Pine Bluff. Memorials are requested to the donor's favorite charity.
M. Stanley Cook, Jr.
January 04, 1937 - April 30, 2004
Stanley Cook, Jr., 67, of Fairhope, Alabama, longtime resident of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, died at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Friday, April 30. Born in Pine Bluff on January 4, 1937, to the late Eugenia Oudin Cook and M. Stanley Cook, the 1955 graduate of Pine Bluff High School attended Culver 
military Institute Summer programs for several years. He attended the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Most of his adult life was spent in Pine Bluff before relocating five years ago to Fairhope. Active in many Pine Bluff civic and church-related activities, the longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, Pine Bluff, served as deacon and elder there. He was past president of the United Way of Jefferson County, serving on the boards of Pine Bluff Rotary Club, Pine Bluff Country Club, Fifty for the Future and Jefferson Preparatory School. Mr. Cook also served as a director of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center Foundation, Guaranty Federal Savings & Loan and the National Bank of Commerce.
For many years the Cook family owned and operated Standard Brakeshoe and Foundry Company with plants in Pine Bluff, Memphis, Tennessee, and Marshall, Texas. Mr. Cook and his son, Miles, later owned Cook Crane & Equipment Company in Pine Bluff. At the time of his death he and his son owned and operated Cook Coastal Rental/Volvo Rents in Fairhope.
Golf was a major part of Stanley's life from his teenage years forward. He and his brother, Joe, entered and won many golf tournaments as a team. Friends often chided Stanley that his love of the outdoors was strictly confined to the golf course. Stanley would always retort: "I hunt more than I fish!" ---because he did neither.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Sally McCutchen Cook; daughter, Sarah Cook; son, Miles S. Cook, III and his wife, Melissa; two grandchildren, Miles Cook IV and Emily Hardcastle Cook; and a brother, Joe E. Cook, all of Fairhope.
Services are Wednesday, May 5, at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, Pine Bluff, with Dr. Lee Kinney officiating, directed by Ralph Robinson & Son (Online register: www.ralphrobinsonandson.com). Elisabeth Stout ( Beebe ) Campbell
August 31, 1916 - December 17, 2001
Elisabeth "Beebe" Stout Campbell, 85, of Pine Bluff, died Monday, December 17, 2001, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. Born on August 31, 1916, to the late William Isaiah and Elta Coopwood Stout, she was reared and received her early education in Little Rock. Mrs. Campbell was a graduate of Little Rock (Central) High School and of the University of Texas at Austin.
A resident of Little Rock for 79 years, she was the widow of James Clyde Campbell who died in 1995. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock and a former member of the Little Rock Departmental Club. An avid traveler who enjoyed many trips overseas, she was a volunteer for many years with Friendship International. She moved to Pine Bluff in 1996.
She is survived by J. Clyde Campbell, MD, son, and daughter-in-law, Kathy, of Pine Bluff; Ellen Campbell Barker, daughter, and son-in-law, Robert, of Gate City, Virginia; Lisa Campbell Bischoff and husband, Vince, of Sonoma, California, Kerry Campbell Roy and husband, Kurt, of McKinney, Texas, Andrew Wankel of Richmond, Virginia, and Mark Wankel of Knoxville, Tennessee, grandchildren. A sister, Aleta S. Tisdale, died before her.
Graveside services will be Friday, at 10:30 AM, at Roselawn Cemetery
in Little Rock by Robinson's.

William L. ( Bill ) Burroughs

William L. "Bill" Burroughs, Jr., 81, of Pine Bluff died Sunday May 2, 2004 at Trinity Medical Center. Mr. Burroughs was born on September 8, 1922 in Little Rock, Arkansas to the late W. L. Burroughs, Sr. and Lucille Pickard Burroughs.
Mr. Burroughs was reared and received his early education in Little Rock, graduating from North Little Rock High School in 1940. After high school, he graduated from the New Mexico military Institute Junior College and attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where he belonged to the Sigma Nu Fraternity. In his senior year, he was called to active duty in the Marines and served in World War II as an officer in the Pacific Theatre.
William Burroughs married Nancy McNew in 1944 in Washington, D. C. In 1947 they moved to Pine Bluff and he went to work for McNew Realty Company.
Mr. Burroughs served on many boards and committees. He owned and served as President of the McNew Realty Company from 1973 to 1994. He served as the First President of Pine Bluff Home Builders. Mr. Burroughs also served as President of the Pine Bluff Board of Realtors and the Arkansas Realtors Association in 1972. He was Director of National Association of Realtors in 1972, 1977, 1978 and 1979 and was appointed by Governor Dale Bumpers in 1973 as a member of the State of Arkansas Real Estate Commission and served as Chairman of the Commission in 1976.
William Burroughs was a member of the Rotary Club for over thirty years as well as a Shriner and Mason. He took an active part in community activities, served on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors three different times. Mr. Burroughs served on many different drives for funds for the betterment of Pine Bluff, including serving as Chairman of the TB Association Drive in 1952.
Nancy Burroughs preceded her husband in death in 1996.
Mr. Burroughs is survived by one son, Lee Burroughs, III of Little Rock, Arkansas; three daughters, Lou Carnal of Pine Bluff, twin daughters Phoebe Roberts of Pine Bluff and Gale Holtzclaw of Ringgold, GA; one sister, Pat Withrow of Little Rock, Arkansas; and five grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday, May 6, 2004 at 10:30 AM at First United Methodist Church in Pine Bluff with the Reverend Charles Settle officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery
with full military honors by the VFW. Visitation will be at the former home of Mr. Burroughs, 1300 West 36th Avenue in Pine Bluff.

Gladys Majors Deam

Gladys Majors Deam, 83, a resident of Pine Bluff, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at her residence.
Born March 1, 1921, in Drew County, Arkansas, she was a daughter of Elmer L. and Ethel B. Handley Guthrie.
Mrs. Deam was reared and educated in Star City. She was a graduate of Star City High School. Mrs. Deam graduated from the Davis Hospital School of Nursing with a degree in Nursing. She was a loving, caring nurse in the office of Dr. J. S. Robinette, for whom she worked for 37 years before retiring in 1986. Mrs. Deam was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Deam was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Weaver Leon Majors; two brothers and five sisters.
Survivors include; her husband Les Deam of Pine Bluff, who she married on July 16, 1992, in Clinton, Arkansas; one son and daughter-in-law, Weaver L. and Carol Majors of Little Rock; two sisters, Jean Spencer of Pine Bluff and Evelyn Guthrie of Loma Linda, California; one grandson, Lee Majors and his wife Paige; one granddaughter, Leanne Franzetti and her husband Chris; great-grandchildren, Mary Carol, Meredith, Warren, Michael, Maria and Olivia.

A. Banks Dawson

A. Banks Dawson, age 81, of Rison, passed away early Wednesday afternoon, May 5, 2004, at the Pine Bluff Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Banks was born August 8, 1922, in Camden, Quachita County, a son of the late Lawrence Edwin and Allie Banks Dawson, Sr. He was reared and educated in Buena Vista graduating from Buena Vista High School. Banks moved to Pine Bluff, in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On August 6, 1961, Banks married Louise Patterson-Turner in Pine Bluff. Mr. Dawson worked as a telegrapher and train dispatcher for the Cotton Belt Railway system for 35 years; retiring in 1975. He was a life-member and past commander of the Hall - Morgan American Legion Post # 83, of Rison, The Sons of the American Revolution, and The Society of Washington Family Descendants. Banks served as a Chairman of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers. He was a volunteer for the Red Cross in Cleveland County and served as Manager of the Jefferson County Red Cross for six years. Banks was a member of the Board, and Assistant Scout Master of Troop Eight, in Rison and was a board member of the Pine Bluff Boys Club. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, of the Boy Scouts of America. He served as the court baliff for his brother, the Honorable Lawrence E. Dawson and private security officer for Governor Sidney McMath. He attended First Presbyterian Church of Pine Bluff and the Rison United Methodist Church. Banks enjoyed public speaking on Patriotic and Historical subjects and was widely renowned as an authority on the history of the Civil War. He actively participated in Jefferson County and Pine Bluff City Politics, having been a City Council member and was a political speech writer for many years.
Mr. Dawson is survived, by his wife of 43 years, Louise of Rison; three sons, Alexander Banks Dawson, Jr. of Nashville, TN, Bruce and his wife, Leah Dawson of Little Rock and Jeffrey Turner and his wife Jo Anne Turner of Rison; two brothers, Lawrence E. and his wife Margaret Ann, Dawson Jr. of Pine Bluff and John and his wife, Nell Jane Dawson of Camden, AR; two grandchildren, Nicholas J. Dawson and Anjinine Turner.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, on Saturday, May 8, 2004, at the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son, 807 Cherry Street, with the Reverend W. Lee Kinney officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery, Pine Bluff.

Claude Brown, Jr.

Claude Brown, Jr., 60, of Star City died Monday, May 10, 2004 at Gardner Nursing Home in Star City.
He was born December 28, 1943 in Rowell, Arkansas, a son of the late Claude Brown, Sr. and Gracie May Roberts Brown.
Mr. Brown was reared and received his early education in Pine Bluff, attending Watson Chapel schools. He worked for the Arkansas Highway Department for a few years. He moved to Gardner Nursing Home in 1995.
He was a member of First Assembly of God in Star City. Mr. Brown liked to fish and was also a craftsman.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Sue Sanderson and Shirlene Baxter.
Survivors include one sister, Edith Straughn of Melborne, Arkansas; three brothers, Kenneth Brown, Harold Brown and Marvin Brown, all of Pine Bluff; and many nieces and nephews.
Services are Thursday, May 13, 2004 at 2:00 PM at the First Assembly of God in Star City with Brother Jim Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in Cypress Memorial Gardens by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 PM at Robinson's. The family will be at the home of Kenneth Brown, 4416 West 28th Ave. in Pine Bluff.
