Hazel Dunlap
February 24, 1912 - January 09, 2002
Hazel Dunlap, 89, of Pine Bluff died Wednesday January 9, 2002 at Trinity Village Medical Center in Pine Bluff. Born February 24, 1912 at Wilmar, Arkansas, she was a daughter of the late Edward Lee Dunlap and Clara Lee Berryman Dunlap.
Ms. Dunlap was a graduate of Pine Bluff High School. She worked for General American Insurance while living in Kennett, Missouri. She also worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance, then went to work for Pine Bluff Monument Company where she was CO-owner.
Ms. Dunlap was a member of First Methodist Church of Pine Bluff where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the Wesley Friendship Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women. In 1971, she was elected KCLA's Woman of the Day. She was also a member of the Pilot Club until 1982.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Martel Dunlap of Pine Bluff; two nephews, Dr. James E. Dunlap of Glenview, Illinois and David A. Dunlap of North Little Rock; and two nieces, Dorothy Dunlap Cookus of Conway and Lee Ann Dunlap Boop of Germantown, Tennessee.
Services will be 1:30 PM Friday, January 11, 2002, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Charles Settle officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
There is no formal visitation. The family will be located at the home of Mrs. Martel Dunlap at 606 West 34th in Pine Bluff.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the First Methodist Church of Pine Bluff, 200 West 6th Street, Pine Bluff, AR 71601.
Curtis Leon Attwood
August 13, 1921 - January 10, 2002
Curtis L. Attwood, 80 of Mountain Home died Thursday, January 10, 2002 at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Arkansas.
Mr. Attwood was born August 13, 1921 in New Edinburg, Arkansas, a son of George C. and Ila E. Frey Attwood. He was reared and educated in New Edinburg where he graduated from New Edinburg High School. He also received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Arkansas A&M in Monticello.
Mr. Attwood served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy during World War II in both the European and Pacific Theaters as an Amphibious Scout. While in the Navy he attended Midshipman School at Columbia University.
He married the former Jo Welch on January 15, 1948 in Fordyce, Arkansas. They moved to Pine Bluff in July 1963 after living in Monticello for 15 years. Mr. Attwood worked for Arkansas Power and Light as a Commercial Service Representative for 39 years before retiring in 1986.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Mountain Home and a past member of South Side Baptist Church in Pine Bluff. Mr. Attwood served as a Deacon, Sunday School Department Director, Sunday School Teacher and on several other committees. He was a past member of the Lions Club, past President of Little League Baseball, a member of the Masonic Lodge #78 F&AM in New Edinburg and served on the District Board of the Boy Scouts of America.
Survivors include his wife; Jo Welch Attwood of Mountain Home, son and daughter in law; Fred and Bonnie Attwood of Mountain Home, daughter and son in law; Cheri A. and Jimmy Price of Monticello, sister; Veleria A. Hobgood of Evansville, Indiana, grandchildren; Tony and Chase Attwood, Kerri Gross, Courtney Price, Misti Bowen, and great-grandchildren; Saylor Bowen and Will Gross.
The family will receive friends Friday 6 to 8 PM at Ralph Robinson and Son. The funeral service will be 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 12, 2002, Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son with Dr. J. R. DeBusk and Dick Couch officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery
in Fordyce, Arkansas.
Gertrude Bea Jacks
June 02, 1924 - January 11, 2002
Gertrude Bea Jacks, 77, of Carthage, Texas, died Friday, January 11, 2002, at the Hospice Homeplace in Tyler, Texas. Born June 2, 1924, at Kingsland, Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late Lillie Golden Thompson and William Henry Hardy Thompson.
Mrs. Jacks was reared and received her education in Kingsland, graduating from Kingsland High School.
Mrs. Jacks had been a resident of Carthage for eighteen years, moving there from Baytown, Texas.
She was a homemaker, a Baptist and enjoyed painting and embroidery. She also loved her dog, an Alaskan Malamute named Blue and she enjoyed gardening.
Mrs. Jacks was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James Richard Jacks, whom she married June 7, 1941, one brother and one sister.
She is survived by one son, J. R. "Dickie" Jacks and wife Earlene of Carthage, Texas; one daughter, Betty Jacks Phelps and husband Randy of Rockville, Maryland; three brothers, James E. Thompson and wife Harriette and William H. "Will" Thompson and wife Betty, all of Carthage, Texas, Henry M. Thompson and wife Catherine of Little Rock; one sister, Margaret F. Reed and husband Maynard. Two grandchildren, Jon Jacks and Dean Jacks and wife Cyndi, all of Ft. Worth, Texas; one great-grandchild, Abby Jacks and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 14, 2002, at 1:00 PM, Robinson's Chapel with the Reverend Jimmy Watson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Dean Jacks, Jon Jacks, Maynard Reed, Jr., Robert Reed, Gary Cole and Joseph Cole.
James Howard Hood
February 18, 1981 - September 27, 2001
James Howard Hood, 20, of White Hall, Arkansas, died Thursday in Pine Bluff. Born in Pine Bluff on February 18, 1981, he was a son of James Michael Hood of White Hall and Peggy Lou Cotton of Sheridan, Arkansas.
He was reared and received his early education in Sheridan and White Hall, graduating from Sheridan High School. He loved to play the guitar and worked parttime with his father. A Christian, he attended First Christian Church in Pine Bluff and Junet Pentecostal Church in Sheridan.
Survivors include his parents; sister, Georgia Michelle Hood of Fayetteville, Arkansas; half-brother, Stanley Crutchfield of Sheridan; half-sisters, Kristie Ringer of Sheridan and Roseann Lockhart of Pine Bluff; grandparents, Avis Hood of Pine Bluff and Howard and Lou Cotton of Sheridan, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jim Hood.
Services will be Saturday at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Mitch Shelburne and Brother Al Michael officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the Hood residence at 4701 N. Rockwood in Pine Bluff. They request that memorials take the form of contributions to the donor's favorite charity.
James David ( Shorty ) McGarity
July 24, 1934 - January 13, 2002
James "Shorty" David McGarity, 67 of the Hardin Community in Pine Bluff died Sunday, January 13, 2002 at his home.
He was born July 24, 1934 in Pine Bluff, a son of Jesse James and Eula Hudson McGarity, Sr. Mr. McGarity was reared and educated in Pine Bluff where he attended Sunshine School. He was a lifelong resident of Pine Bluff. Mr. McGarity worked for Central Moloney as an Overhead Crane Operator for 23 years. He was a Baptist by faith and an avid fisherman and duck hunter.
Mr. McGarity was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister; Jessie Coleman.
Survivors include a brother; Jesse James McGarity, Jr. of the Hardin Community and a sister; Idolia Freeman of Tyler Texas.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 6 to 8 PM at Ralph Robinson's.
Graveside services will be handled by Ralph Robinson and Son; 3:00 PM, Wednesday, January 16, 2002 in Hardin Cemetery
with Reverend Clyde Jones officiating.
Ethel L. Waldroup
March 17, 1917 - January 16, 2002
Ethel L. Waldroup, 84, of 6810 South Hazel Street (formerly of 2702 Colonial Avenue), Pine Bluff, Arkansas, died Wednesday, January 16, 2002, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Waldroup was born March 17, 1917 in Warren, Arkansas to the late Joe Mark and Edna Dolan Howard.
Mrs. Waldroup was reared and educated in Warren, Arkansas. During WWII, she was a certified welder for Ingall's Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
She married W.W. Bill Waldroup in 1957 at Greenville, Mississippi. They moved to Pine Bluff in 1965.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and millinery work. She was a member of East Side Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Larry Burnett of Montgomery, Alabama, Joe Burnett of Orlando, Florida, two sisters, Margaret Baker of Pine Bluff, Valarete Phelps of Clarksville, Arkansas, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, W.W. Bill Waldroup, who passed away March 3, 1986, and a brother.
The graveside service is scheduled for 1:00 P.M., Saturday, January 19, 2002, at the McGehee Cemetery, McGehee, Arkansas.
Ruby Mae Harris
February 18, 1916 - January 19, 2002
Ruby Mae Harris, 85, of Hot Springs died, Saturday, January 19, 2002 at Quapaw Health Care. She was born February 18, 1916 in El Dorado, Arkansas to John W. and Lena Slaughter Meggs.
Mrs. Harris was reared and educated in El Dorado where she graduated from Myrtle Grove High School. She married Charles Ross Vance in 1935 in El Dorado. They moved to Pine Bluff in 1961. Mrs. Harris married Holland James Harris in Pine Bluff in 1977. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Pine Bluff and the TEL Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Harris was a seamstress and devoted mother and wife. In 1998 she moved to Trinity Village Lodge. She moved to Hot Springs to be with her son in November 2001.
. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Ross Vance, who passed away in 1975; her second husband, Holland James Harris, who passed away in 1983; parents, John W. and Lena Slaughter Meggs; grandson, Barrett Vance; and brothers, Wiley Meggs and Webster Meggs.
Survivors include her sons and daughter in laws, Randall and Sandra Vance of Hot Springs, Chester and Ellen Vance of Orange Beach, Alabama; granddaughter, Amanda Proffitt of Little Rock; sisters, Melba Bollinger of North Little Rock, Evie Brasher of El Dorado, Morene Holder of El Dorado and Agnes Smith of El Dorado.
Graveside service will be held 1:00 PM, Monday, January 21, 2002 in Graceland Cemetery
by Ralph Robinson and Son with Reverend Rex Newman officiating.

Dorothy Ezell DuPree
December 24, 1903 - January 22, 2002
Dorothy Ezell DuPree, 98, of Pine Bluff, died Tuesday, January 22, 2002, at Trinity Village Medical Center. Born in Pine Bluff December 24, 1903, a daughter of the late Richard Fain and Beatrice Taylor Ezell, she was reared and received her early education in Pine Bluff. She was a graduate of Pine Bluff High School and attended National Park Seminary in Washington, DC.
She married Vivian Ira DuPree in Pine Bluff on May 30, 1923. Active in the civic and cultural life of Pine Bluff throughout her life, she was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and a past president of Presbyterian Women there. She was a charter member of the Pine Bluff - Jefferson County Library System Board of Directors, serving on that board and its predecessor for 53 years and as its treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the John McAlmont Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a charter member and past president of the Junior Mathontes Club, a charter member and past president of the Jefferson Regional Medical Center Auxilliary, an emeritus member of the Junior League of Pine Bluff, and a member of Synergy Forum, Inc., the Birthday Club and the Pollyanna Club.
Survivors include Judge Thomas E. Brown, Richard DuPree Brown, David Rhine Brown, and Virginia Brown Scriber of Pine Bluff, Ann Brown Turner of The Woodlands, Texas, great-nieces and nephews; and Pat Rhine Brown of Pine Bluff. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980, and in 1987 by her nephew, Edward Ezell Brown, and by her sister and brother-in-law with whom she and Mr. DuPree lived for several decades, Edward M. and Annie B. Brown. The family will be at the home of Judge and Mrs. Thomas E. Brown at 1715 West 35th Avenue in Pine Bluff.
Services are at 2:00 PM Wednesday in the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wm. Lee Kinney and Rev. Jeff Price officiating. Interment will follow in Bellwood Cemetery

Leonard Coyle
March 27, 1926 - January 22, 2002
Leonard Coyle, 75, of Pine Bluff died Tuesday at his home.
He was born March 27, 1926 in Springhill, Louisiana, to J. G. and Bessie Lee Beene Coyle.
He graduated from Springhill High School in 1944, then served in the U.S. Navy, and later received a Bachelor's of Science in Physical Education from Northwestern College in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He played football in high school and college.
After college he worked for B&S Building Industries, until 1965, when he started Professional Builders and Realty.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, the Pine Bluff Board of Realtors, Homebuilders Asscociation, and a former member of Pine Bluff Rotary and the Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Selma Mahfouz Coyle, son, David Coyle III of Pine Bluff, three daughters, Martha Womack, Barbara Stratton, and Janet Cole, all of Pine Bluff, two sisters, Willie Fred Bollier of Pine Bluff, and Nell Hedgepeth of Monticello, Mississippi, ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Coyle was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A. M. Thursday, at First Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be 3:00 P.M. Thursday at Springhill Cemetery, in Springhill, Louisiana, by Ralph Robinson and Son.
The family will be at the Womack home, at 8410 Gaddy Koonce Road. They will receive friends at Ralph Robinson and Son, Wednesday, 6-8 P.M.
Memorials may take the form of donations to the Building Fund at First Baptist Church, 6501 S. Hazel, Pine Bluff, 71603.
