CONE MAGIE, 81
Futha Cone Magie, 81, of Cabot, died March 27, 2006. He was born Oct. 12, 1924 in England to Albert Hugh and Rose Beauchamp Magie.
He was a member of Cabot United Methodist Church since 1955 and served as a Sunday school teacher, member of the administrative board and on church committees.
His newspaper career began at age eight when he was a carrier for the Arkansas Gazette in England. In high school he edited his school newspaper, The Lion, and swept floors at the England Democrat.
In 1945, Magie married
Elizabeth Anne 'Betty' Rice of Lonoke. He served aboard the U.S.S. Pocomoke in the Navy during World War II and used his G.I. education benefits to study journalism at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
Upon graduation in 1949, he went to work for the Madison County Record in Huntsville, published by Orval Faubus, who later became governor. After a short while, he took a job publishing newsletters for the Arkansas Farm Bureau, then the Iowa Farm Bureau, followed by the American Farm Bureau in Washington.
In 1955, Magie and his wife returned to Arkansas and founded the Cabot Star newspaper in Cabot. Within a few months, the Magies purchased the Cabot Herald and merged the two into the Cabot Star-Herald, which has been published by the Magie family for 50 years.
The Magies added the Lonoke Democrat, the Carlisle Independent, the Jacksonville Patriot and the Sherwood Voice to their family newspaper operation.
Magie worked with State Rep. Bill Foster and local leaders to guide highway officials to extend Hwy. 321 to Hwy. 5.
He loved his home state and proudly served 17 years on the Arkansas Parks and Tourism Commission, during which time, a 1/8-cent sales tax was passed by Arkansas voters that continues to provide money for state park improvements.
He was a delegate in the Arkansas Constitutional Convention in 1979, and was a member of the Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Veteran's of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and Cabot Masonic Lodge.
His career highlights include serving as Arkansas Press Association president, and both he and his wife were named Arkansas Journalists of the Year in 1991. Last year, the Magies were inducted into the Lemke Journalism Alumni Society Hall of Honor at the University of Arkansas.
Magie was preceded in death by his twin sons, Larry Cone and Gary Louis, and a brother, Leland Beauchamp Magie.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, of 61 years; two daughters, Shelly Magie Moran of Siloam Springs, and Connie Magie Buckingham and husband Mike of Van Buren; one son, Mark Magie and wife Susie of Cabot; seven granddaughters, Kelly Terwege and husband Mike of Garland, Texas, Leslie Pacheco and husband Ernie, Elizabeth Buckingham and Meagan Magie of Fayetteville, Sarah Buckingham of Conway, Emily Buckingham of Van Buren, and Mallory Magie of Cabot; two great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Jack Terwege of Garland, Texas; three brothers, Albert Hugh Magie and wife Grace of Heber Springs, Dr. Jimmie John Magie of Conway, and Richard Casey Magie of Winnelli, Australia; and a dedicated newspaper staff.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Moore’s Cabot Funeral Home. Funeral services are planned for 1 p.m., Thursday at Cabot United Methodist Church followed by Interment at Concord cemetery in Furlow.
Pallbearers will be Magie’s nephews.

DIANA STEVENS, 48
Diana Lynn Stevens, 48, of Austin passed away March 27, 2006 in Searcy. She was born on Dec. 30, 1957 in Jacksonville, to Kenneth and the late Shirley Hamby.
She is survived by her husband, John Stevens Jr. of Austin; father, Kenneth Hamby of Texarkana; daughter, Nina Stevens of Lonoke; sons, John and wife Rebecca Stevens III of Austin and Joey and wife Alicia Stevens of Beebe; sister, Sharron LaBruno of N.C.; brothers, Kenneth Allen Hamby of Little Rock and Charles Hamby of Cabot; grandchildren, Skyla, Jose, Marcus and Katelynn.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moore’s Jacksonville Funeral Home Chapel followed by Interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Park.

FRANK AVERETT, 59
Frank Meredith Averett, Jr., 59 of Sherwood died March 27, 2006 in North Little Rock. He was born October 18, 1946 in Nashville, Tenn., to the late Frank M. and Margaret Lumsden Averett, Sr. Frank served in the Army and was a member of the Hobby Club.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela K. Averett of Sherwood; foster parents, Buck and Dixie Buchanan of Cabot; two sons, Arthur Cave of Tucson, Ariz., and Orville Cave II of Pensacola, Fla.; daughter, Tamela Cain of Jacksonville; two half-sisters, Annette Simmons and Scarlet Messick and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Moore’s Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville.
Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to cancer research.

DELMER CORBIN, 76
Delmer Lee Corbin, 76, of Cabot, died Tuesday March 28, 2006.
She was a homemaker and a member of Bible Missionary Church in Cabot.
She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Mark Brown of Cabot, Lydia and Wes Mills of Kensett and Paula Jones-McFadden and husband Mark of Cabot; one sister, Ruby Mickle of Jacksonville; eight grandchildren, Timothy and Matthew Brown, Britney Horner, Amber and Ashley Cathey, Madison and Preston Jones and Colton 'Pumpkin' McFadden.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Bible Missionary Church in Cabot with the Revs. Ed Manis and Andy Buege officiating.
Burial will be in Wattensaw cemetery.
Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8p.m. Thursday at Cabot Funeral Home.
DONNA ALLEN-BRITTON, 43
Donna Ann Allen-Britton, 43, of Tyler, Texas, passed away April 15, 2006. She was born Aug. 3, 1962 to Barry and Patricia Spears in New Milford, Conn.
She was preceded in death by husband Dennis Lee Allen, and brother, Tommy Spears.
Survivors include husband Charles Britton of Tyler; daughters: DeAna Phillips, Charlene Allen and Elizabeth Layrock all of Searcy; step-children: Rebecca Boswell and Kayla Vanaman of Sherwood, Linda Weathers, Charlie Britton and Clarissa Britton of Providence; parents: Barry Spears of Florida and Patricia Spears of Texas and Charles and Elise Allen of Augusta; sister, Debbie Schmidt; brothers Toby Spears and Tim Spears all of Texas; five grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Victory Baptist Church in Cabot with Interment at Providence cemetery. Memorials may be made to any Cancer Research Organization.

REV. ANDREW RUTLEDGE AND LENA RUTLEDGE, 89
Rev. Andrew Jackson Rutledge and his wife, Lena Geneva Rutledge, formerly of Jacksonville, went to be with the Lord this weekend in Springfield, Mo.
Mr. Rutledge died on April 14, 2006 at the age of 89, and Mrs. Rutledge died on April 16, 2006 also at the age of 89.
The loving couple were married
on Aug. 30, 1940, and spent 66 beautiful years together.
Mr. Rutledge was born in Horneback, Tenn., on July 28, 1916 to the late William and Ethel Webster Rutledge. Two brothers also preceded him in death.
He was an Assembly of God minister. Mrs. Rutledge was born in Zalma, Mo., on Aug. 14, 1916, to the late William A. and Ina M. Mansfield McKenzie. Five brothers and a sister also precede her.
Survivors include one son, William A. Rutledge and his wife, Lois, of North Little Rock, two daughters; Joyce Garman and husband Kelsey of Springfield, Mo.; and Donna Jenkins and husband Danny of Ward; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Moore’s Jacksonville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Royce Lowe officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 on Wednesday night at the funeral home.

CHARLES DAVIS, 64
Charles Wayne Davis, 64, of Cabot passed away on April 16, 2006.
Survivors include his special friend Michael Faught and family; the nurses and residents of Spring Creek Living Center and his church family at Victory Baptist Church in Cabot.
Visitation will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home and from 8 a.m. until service time Thursday at Victory Baptist Church in Cabot with Bro. Ben Leonard officiating.
Interment will follow at Sylvania cemetery.

MICHAEL YOUNGBLOOD, 42
Michael Gene Youngblood, 42, of North Little Rock, passed away on May 8, 2006. He was born on Aug. 17, 1963, in North Little Rock to Jerry Allen Youngblood and Shirley Wilson Youngblood.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother Jerry Allen Youngblood Jr.
He graduated from Jacksonville High School and was retired from Jerry's Appliance Co. in North Little Rock.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Youngblood of North Little Rock; his mother, Shirley Pauline Youngblood of North Little Rock; a son, Michael Gene Youngblood II; a daughter, Mycha Denise Youngblood; a sister, Lisa Renee Thompson and her husband Don, and numerous other family and friends.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Moore's Jacksonville Funeral Home Chapel followed by Interment in Arkansas Memorial Gardens in North Little Rock.

MILDRED TAYLOR, 77
Mildred L. Oakley Taylor, 77, of El Paso was born May 27, 1928, in El Paso to Quince and Opal Jones Oakley, and died May 4, 2006. She was a member of Union Valley Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Carrol Taylor; three sons, Windell Taylor and his wife Deborah of Enola, Gerald Taylor and his wife Evyonne of Vilonia and Mike Taylor and his wife Wanda of Quitman; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Doyne Oakley of Searcy and Carthel Oakley of Morrilton; one sister, Carolyn Sarringer of Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, James Taylor; sisters, Shirley Safley and Nell Cates.
Funeral services were held Monday at Union Valley Baptist Church with burial in Grissard cemetery. Arrangements by Westbrook Funeral Home in Beebe.
DARRELL HOUSE, 74
Darrell Eugene House, 74, of Jacksonville departed this earth April 14, 2006.
He was born Nov. 6, 1931, in Swifton to the late Richard and Della Mae House.
House is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Judy Puckett of Jacksonville five sons; Brian and his wife Dawn House of Jacksonville, Michael House of North Little Rock, Richard House of St. Louis, Mo., Danny House of North Little Rock, and Jimmy House of Ferndale; two grandchildren Darrell and Natalie House; one brother, Carl House of Little Rock; two sisters, Beatrice Haigwood and Mildred Cochran both of North Little Rock.
Funeral services were held at Tuesday at Stanfill Baptist Church in Jacksonville with Brother Gene Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Stanfill cemetery.

REV. LONNIE AUTRY, 74
Rev. Lonnie D. Autry, 74, of Sherwood, passed away Feb. 26, 2006. He was the pastor of Berea Baptist Church of Jacksonville and retired from the Corp of Engineers. Rev. Autry was a sergeant in the Air Force during the Korean War and past treasurer of the North Pulaski Baptist Association.
He is survived by his wife, Verdarose Adkins Autry; daughter, Mariell A. 'Dee Dee' Autry of Sherwood; sisters, Emily Ewing and Ann Heron and husband Kenneth all of Jacksonville, Belle Gregory and husband Lloyd of Bonnerdale; brother, Doyle Autry and wife Mary Beth of Van Buren; sisters-in-law, Christine Autry of North Little Rock and Jo Autry of Cabot. Rev. Autry was preceded in death by his parents, Garner S. Autry, Sr. and Mary Etta Hayes Autry; brothers, Garner and Aubrey Autry.
