Glenn Phelps
Glenn Phelps, 68, of Booneville passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, in Fort Smith. He was owner and operator of Western Auto in Booneville for 37 years, a member of First Baptist Church in Booneville and past president of the Rotary Club. He also served on the board of directors of First Western Mortgage Co. and the Booneville Hospital Board.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Booneville under the direction of Roberts Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Phelps of the home; a daughter, Kelley Nettles of Booneville; three sons, Mark Phelps of Cabot, Chuck Parker M.D. of Fort Smith and Tom Parker of Fayetteville; a brother, Jon Phelps of Tulsa; five grandchildren, Jenifer Herrera, Amie Parker Coatney, Angela Parker, Dillon Dust and Alex Dust; and two great-grandchildren, Maddie Herrera, Brooks Herrera.
Pallbearers: Billy Bob Cauthron, Gene Remy, Jay Smith, Bill Perceful, Roy Townsend, Dr. Tom Dupree, James Foster and Jerry Oswalt.
Honorary pallbearers include the Middle Creek Home Economics and Poker Club.

David Lee Taylor
David Lee Taylor, 62, of Clarksville died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in Clarksville. He was a native and lifelong resident of Clarksville, he graduated from Clarksville High School, attended University of the Ozarks and graduated from Arkansas Tech University with a degree in business administration. As a business developer he owned and operated the Clarksville Sears Catalog Store, Arkansas Valley Mini Storage, Best Western Motel, Mazzio’s Pizza, along with other businesses. He currently was involved in commercial real estate development. A member of First Baptist Church, he was also on Regions Bank Board of Directors, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Airport Board Commission.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at First Baptist Church with burial at Oakland cemetery in Clarksville under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home of Clarksville.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Carolyn Felkins Taylor; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Darrell Weathers of Clarksville; and two granddaughters, Taylor Weathers and Whitney Weathers, both of Clarksville.
He was loved and raised by mothers, Wanda Miller, Kittie Pitts and Ruby Shuffield, brothers and sisters, Larry Taylor, Gloria Jean Shahegh, Bobby Cryns, Jimmy Ray Miller and Jack Branch. He was preceded in death by his father, Gorman Taylor.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Gould, Glenn Hartlein, Roy Johnson, Max Slaughter, Kenney Elkins and Gene Talbert.
The family will visit with friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel.

Mildred Lucille Shankle
Mildred Lucille Shankle, 82, of Hartford died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of the Hartford Assembly of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Leon Shankle; and a daughter, Sharon Kay Shankle.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24 at the Hartford Assembly of God with burial at Hartford Memorial Park under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Hartford.
She is survived by one son, Shon Shankle and his wife, Frances, of Monroe, Okla.; four daughters, Sidney Weaver and her husband, Bill, of Mansfield, Mary Roberts and her husband, Jim, of Hartford, Foye Jean Shankle of Poteau and Sherry Barnes and her husband, Don, of Monroe; one brother, J.L. Autry of Monroe; two sisters, Joy Hale of Broken Bow, Okla., and Violet Madison of Lake Eufaula, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23 at McConnell Funeral Home in Hartford, where the family will visit with friends from 2 to 4 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Chris Roberts, Keith Roberts, Terry Roberts, Brett Barnes, Pete Cepeda and Marty Blanchard. Honorary pallbearers will be Justin and Jared Weaver in Kuwait, Bill Weaver, Jim Roberts, Don Barnes and Tommy Riley.
Ben O. Holmes
Ben O. Holmes, 81, of Fort Smith passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005. He was retired from the Army after 25 years of service. After his retirement from the Army he worked on heavy equipment and worked in the medical supplies field. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Sebastian Masonic Lodge No. 706 F & AM, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Amrita Grotto, and the Center of Arts for Education in Van Buren. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post No. 31.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with interment at Roselawn cemetery with full military honors.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn; one daughter, Paula Vaughn and husband Jerry of Pocola; two sons, Charles Holmes of Chester and Ben Holmes Jr. of Conway; one sister, Mamye Brooks of Dallas; two brothers, James Holmes of Fort Smith and Don Holmes and wife Yvonne of Mexia, Texas; and one grandson, Jeremy Vaughn of Pocola.
Pallbearers will be William Warren, Kenny O’Hagan, Jerry Vaughn, Billy Franklin and Larry and Bob Johnson.

Mr. Jesse Harold Gilmore
Mr. Jesse Harold Gilmore, 80, of Alma died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in a local nursing home. He was a retired ironworker for Buckner and Flemings Construction, a member of The Solid Rock Tabernacle Church in Alma and Ironworkers Local No. 584 in Tulsa, and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Mae Dillard Gilmore.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Butterfield Assembly of God in Van Buren with burial at Alma cemetery in Alma under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
Mr. Gilmore is survived by three daughters, LaVonne Whitlock of Alma, LaVerne Stephens of Grove, Okla., and LaNelle Schmelzer of Alma; two sons, the Rev. Harold Lee Gilmore of Kibler and the Rev. Ronnie Gene Gilmore of Alma; a half-sister, Peggy Fuqua of Indianapolis, Ind.; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Curtis and John Housley, Michael and Tim Whitlock and Cody, Jason, Steven and Travis Gilmore. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Mr. Gilmore’s Sunday school class at The Solid Rock Tabernacle in Alma.

Layton Norman Gray
Layton Norman Gray, age 93, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, after a relatively short illness. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen; his daughter, Ann Scott Gray Winters and her husband Robert L. Winters of Fort Smith; his sister, Lucille Cochran of Batesville; his step-grandson Matthew and great-grandson Joseph Mark Winters, both of Fort Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews and close cousins.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Gleaners Sunday school class, the men’s Thursday Bible Study, the Breakfast Bible Group and Bible Study Fellowship. After 40 yeas of service he retired as an engineer with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. and was a member of the Pioneers, an SBC retirement association.
He graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College, where he was actively involved in all athletic activities, holding the state high hurdle record from 1937 until it was broken in 1961. Layton was an avid sportsman from childhood on. He especially enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Ouachita Anglers Fishing Club. Layton’s anchors were his faith, his family, his friends and fishing.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Gleaners Sunday school class of First United Methodist Church.

Lonnie Floyd Hunter
Lonnie Floyd Hunter, 81, of Alma died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, in a local hospital. He was a retired furnace tender for Harding Glass Co. in Fort Smith. He attended Full Gospel Church in Mulberry and was a member of the Van Buren Masonic Lodge for 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Plummer and Bessie Hunter; two brothers, Harvey and Earl Hunter; and a stepson, Billy Hunter.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn cemetery with Masonic graveside rites.
He is survived by his wife, Dewilla of the home; two daughters, Joette Evans of Van Buren and Brenda Crowell of Mountainburg; a son, David Hunter of Alma; one godchild, Casey Lynn Pierce of Van Buren; three sisters, Mildred Lampe of Fort Smith and Sue Tuck and Alivern McDonald, both of Van Buren; two brothers, Leonard Hunter of Muldrow and Alvin Hunter of Fort Smith; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Freddy, John Cecil and Charles O’Kelley and Lanny, Dennis and Ricky Hunter.
Dixie Irene Adair
Dixie Irene Adair, age 51, of Booneville died Jan. 20, 2005, in Little Rock. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lutheran Church.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Roller Funeral Home Chapel in Booneville with burial at Cauthron cemetery in Booneville.
She is survived by her husband, Leo Wayne Adair of Booneville; her parents, Harry and Shorty Garman of Magazine; two daughters, Montez Jones and Jason Piles, both of Parks, and Nancy and Terry Bourlon, both of Van Buren; a son, Lee Adair of Booneville; a sister, Deeanna Woodall of Mountain View; four brothers, Clell Garman of Booneville, Mikel Garman of Nashville, Tenn., Rodger and Donna Garman of Delaware and Kenny Garman of Magazine; seven grandchildren, Danielle Lace Randolph, Ashlea Lauren Piles, Dylon Tylor Piles and Amberlin Donea Piles, all of Parks, and Lindsey Bre Ann Bourlon, Laura Irene Bourlon and Terry Wayne Bourlon II, all of Van Buren; several nieces, nephews and so many dear and wonderful family and friends.

Darla Rachelle McGrew-Morris
Darla Rachelle McGrew-Morris, 45, of Fort Smith died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in a local hospital. She was a member of Wood Memorial Christian Church and a homemaker.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
She is survived by a daughter, Ashley Hatley of Fort Smith; three sons, Jason Smith of Van Buren, Travis Morris of Texas and Steven Blasdell of Arizona; her parents, Robert and Janis McGrew of Van Buren; two sisters, Monica Baber of Van Buren and Kendra Elliott of Tennessee; two brothers, Robert McGrew III of Fort Smith of Kenneth Hays of Tennessee; and four grandchildren.

James Edson
ROGERS — James Edward Edson, 91, of Rogers died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004. He was born Nov. 23, 1913, in Fort Smith. He graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1933, attended the University of Arkansas, was athletic business manager who traveled with the football team, owned Edson-Hix Furniture Manufacturing in Fort Smith, was president of Theta Kappa Nu fraternity and Lambda Chi, a member of First Methodist Church in Fort Smith, where he was president of the Gleaners Class, a Sunday school teacher and usher, a member of the Scottish Rite, a 32nd degree Mason of Belle Point Lodge No. 20 in Fort Smith, a member of Central United Methodist Church in Rogers, where he was head usher, and the widower of Mary Edson.
A celebration of life service was held in December at Central United Methodist Church in Rogers and with a Masonic graveside service. Arrangements were under the direction of Callison-Lough Funeral Service of Rogers.
He is survived by a daughter, Lou Hoffman of Mansfield, Texas; a son, Jim Edson Jr. of Monticello; one grandchild; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Dorothy Crockett
Dorothy Jean Crockett, 79, of Van Buren died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, in her home. She was born July 6, 1925, Breckenridge, Texas. She was a retired schoolteacher in Corpus Christi, Texas, member of North Park Baptist Church, the Eastern Star, started special education school in Kingsville and organized first Scout Troop for handicapped children, and was the widow of Walter Crockett.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chamberlain cemetery in Kingsville, Texas.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Crockett of Van Buren and Karen Cookson of Brampton, Canada; a son, Jerry Crockett of Crosby, Texas; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
