CLARKSVILLE — Alfred V. Pomrenke, 85, of Clarksville died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005. He was born Jan. 21, 1920, in Lutherville. He was a graduate of Lamar High School, retired from Eureka Brick & Tile Co., a farmer and the widower of Connie Pomrenke.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville with burial at Oakland cemetery in Clarksville.
He is survived by a stepdaughter, Mary Bittick of Tulsa; four stepsons, Jim and Gary Funderburg, both of Alma, Ronnie Funderburg of Lamar and Joe Funderburg of Clarksville; a sister, Mary Schlueter of Oaklawn, Ill.; and a brother, Julius Pomrenke of Reno, Nev.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
James Qualls
BALTIMORE — James Taylor Qualls, 82, of Baltimore, formerly of Clarksville, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005. He was born July 14, 1923, in Alix. He attended Clarksville Schools, served as a Marine in the South Pacific, and was a businessman.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Hardwicke Funeral Home in Clarksville with burial at Houston cemetery in Alix.
He is survived by three daughters, Mary Smith of Lutherville, Md., Vida and Elizabeth Qualls; two sons, Robert Qualls of Norristown, Pa., and James Qualls of Kingsville, Md.; two sisters, Stella Rankin of Yonkers, N.Y., and Ann Autry of Clarksville; two brothers, Frank Qualls of Hot Springs and Lonnie Qualls of Clarksville; and six grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

HARTFORD — Claude Hoopengarner, 75, of Hartford died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was retired from the Long Beach, Calif. School district, a veteran of the Marine Corps and the Korean War.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Chapel in Hartford with burial at Hartford Memorial Park under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Hartford.
He is survived by his wife, Jo; a son, Eddie Hoopengarner of Nuevo, Calif.; two brothers, Johnny Hoopengarner of Tulsa and Carl Hoopengarner of Hartford; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed 1 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

MENA — Sarah Jane Dreyer, 51, of Mena died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was born Oct. 19, 1953, in Kingsville, Texas. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Canaanland Church under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by her husband, Stanley; two daughters, Ginger Tulley of Springdale and Tatum McDowell of Tennessee; her mother, Ruth Shaver of Aransas Pass, Texas; a sister, Ruth Matthews of San Antonio; and one grandchild.
Juanita Stanley
UNIONTOWN — Juanita Hibbard Carver Stanley, 89, of Uniontown died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in a local hospital. She was born Nov. 21, 1915, in St. Paul. She was a retired nurse, a member of First Christian Church in Uniontown, the Gold Star Wives of American, the DAV Auxiliary and the E.H.C. Club of Uniontown, a former board member of the Area Agency on Aging and of the Crawford County Senior Citizens, served as Democratic Committee member, a R.S.V.P. volunteer and the widow of Elmer Stanley.
Funeral will be noon Saturday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a son, Audley Carver of Irving, Texas; three sisters, Imogene Chomor of Bay Point, Calif., Audra Denny of Chouteau, Okla., and Glenda Flippin of Uniontown; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Timothy and Bradley Carver, Aaron and Taylor Willis, Aaron Roe and Eddie Maestri.

SUBIACO — Tillie Werner Forst, 84, of Subiaco died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker, a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Subiaco, Mother’s Society, Catholic Women’s Union and Catholic Knights of America, and the widow of Jude Forst.

Jimmy R. Medlock
Jimmy R. Medlock, 70, of Alma died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in a local hospital. He was born June 20, 1934, in Mulberry. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner and a truck broker. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.E. Medlock Sr. and Elva Boen Medlock; two brothers, J.E. Medlock Jr. and Robert Lee Medlock; and two sisters, Evelyn Ree Ehlenfeldt and Mary Rebecca Hood.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Ocker Funeral Home Chapel in Alma with burial and full military honors at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Medlock of the home; a son, Jimmy R. Medlock Jr. of California; three sisters, Freda Adams and Anna Sue Galbert, both of Kansas City, Mo., and Naomi Ruth Medlock of Alma; and three brothers, Joe Medlock of Mulberry, Jerry Medlock of Van Buren and Jerald Medlock of Altus.

V.V. “Rube” Fletcher
V.V. “Rube” Fletcher, 88, of Fort Smith died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in a local hospital. He was born Nov. 29, 1916, in Bauxite. He was one of the original owners of Southland Furniture Inc., a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, an avid fisherman and a staunch Republican. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ocie Mae Fletcher; and son, John V. Fletcher.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith.

Mayme Brasuell Whittle, 92, of Alma died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in a local nursing home. She was born Feb. 2. 1913, in the Dripping Springs community to William Henry and Iva Mae London Hodges. She was a homemaker and a former nurse and was of the Freewill Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruth Cox; a half sister, Mary McGee; three brothers, Orval, Earl and Ray Hodges; and a husband, Roy Lee Brasuell.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ocker Funeral Home Chapel in Alma with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
She is survived by her husband, Herbert Whittle of the home; two daughters, Emma Lea Cox and her husband Paul of Harrah, Okla., and Trecia Ann Lloyd and her husband Joe of Alma; two stepsisters, Ellen Gregg and Thelma Phillips, both of Wichita, Kan.; six grandchildren, Anita Hurt, Adela Weaver, Adenia Miles and Ernest Cox, all of Oklahoma, Joe Lloyd III of Van Buren and Jennifer Hardcastle of Rudy; 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Lucille A. Taylor
Lucille A. Taylor, 95, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker, a member of the First Christian Church of Fort Smith, a former beautician and a bridge life master.
She is survived by a son, Edlin “Bud” Brannon of Fort Smith; a stepson, Joe David Taylor of Fort Smith; a sister, Louise Christopher of Fort Smith; her caregiver for the past 10 years, Kathy Stewart; three grandchildren, Susan Johnson, Marcille Grimes and Lisa Jennings; four great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.L. “Bud” Taylor.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial to follow at Oak cemetery in Fort Smith.

Wylie Brewer
Wylie Brewer, 62, was born Dec. 17, 1942, in Van Buren to Frank Brewer and Edna Carson Brewer. He was a lifelong resident of Crawford County, attended Amazing Grace Fellowship Church and was a former county clerk, having worked in the Crawford County Courthouse from 1961 to 1998.
He died on Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in Fort Smith. He is survived by his beloved wife Lillian of 43 years; two sons, Dale Brewer and wife Angie, and David Brewer and wife Sheila, all of Rudy; one brother, Boyne Brewer and wife Rena of Mount Ida; four grandchildren, John, Ethan, Dylan and Lakota Brewer, all of Rudy; several nieces and nephews and some very good friends.
Wylie was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Duane Brewer.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, 700 Jefferson St., Van Buren.
Ola Gray Philpott
Ola Gray Philpott, 105, of Van Buren died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Van Buren. She was the fourth of 10 children born to Margaret Ella Ray and William Russell Gray. She was born in Marble on May 24, 1899. The gray family, accompanied by W.R. Gray’s father, moved to Springdale around 1906. Ola told of the family putting all of its worldly goods on and behind wagons for the move that took two days. Occasionally the younger children ran alongside the wagons to break the monotony of the trip. The entourage rested for the night at a campground in the Spring Valley Community, about the halfway mark of the journey.
Around 1917, Ola moved to Fort Smith to live with her sister Amyl Jones and family and attend Draughn’s Business College. She was employed by The Music Company while awaiting the discharge of Zelmer “Cap” Philpott from the Army. Ola and Cap were married
on May 12, 1921. In the early years of their marriage, the couple lived in several cities in Washington and in Portland, Ore., and later in and around Los Angeles. Ola continued to work as a bookkeeper wherever they lived, and Cap sold Oriental rugs. At that time the Jones family lived in California also, so the couples shared housing.
In the mid 1920s the Philpotts returned to Fort Smith, and for nearly 20 years they lived on Rogers Avenue, where their home and a service station shared the same corner lot. The Philpotts retained ownership of their property on Rogers Avenue for several years after they bought a large acreage on Lee Creek near the Oklahoma border just off Dora Road. There they built a home to serve as a gathering place for all of the extended family. Having no children of her own didn’t cause Ola to miss out on having young people around her. “The Farm” was a haven for many generations of family to share, spend work time during weekends and vacations, and gather to meet their aunts, uncles and cousins who were drawn to the family matriarch. It was a working ranch, with cattle, horses, fences to mend, hay to bale and many chores to do. At high noon, a large bell would ring, which was a signal from Ola for all to gather for a hearty lunch, which hired hands and family would share together. The couple became affectionately known as “Aunt Ola” and “Uncle Cap” to their family and friends. Cap died in 1969 while at work on the farm, doing what he loved.
Ola’s hours in her flower gardens were truly a labor of love. No one who visited went away without a “care” package of plants. She was a member of the Fort Smith Garden Club for over 50 years. When the Garden Club hosted a 100th birthday party for her in May 1999, she said, “I’ve worked hard all my life, and hard work never hurt anyone. I’ve lived a full life and I’ve been blessed in so many ways.” Part of that blessing was having survived three tornadoes — two on the farm, many years ago, and one at her last home on Mount Vista in Van Buren on the night of April 21, 1996.
For many years, Ola was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Fort Smith. She inspired others with her faithful attendance. On a regular basis, Ola would drive from Van Buren to her church in Fort Smith while picking up other members who were unable to drive. Her care for others was also evident as she regularly spent time with friends who were in nursing homes, and as she prepared and delivered meals to those who were homebound.
In addition to her husband, Zelmer “Cap” Philpott, Ola was preceded in death by her siblings, Lelland, Amyl, Grace, Elbridge, Doyle, Pearl, Mary, Dick and Margaret Elizabeth. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Jimmy Eugene Shores
Jimmy Eugene Shores, 63, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in a local hospital. He was born March 4, 1941, in Murfreesboro, Tenn. He was a self-employed truck driver for 41 years.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by the mother of his son, Sandy; a son, Mike Shores of Fort Smith; a brother, William Shores of Witcherville; four sisters, Grace Adcock of Tampa, Fla., Beulah Mauphin and Louise Garrett, both of Murfreesboro, and Linda Sexton of Chattanooga, Tenn.; his faithful companion, “Mo Mo”; and one grandchild, Jordan Ashley Shores.
Pallbearers will be Sonny Davis, Luther White, Manuel Ray, Michael and Bill Shores and Kenny Whalen.
