Dr. E.K. Landis
Dr. E.K. Landis, 74, of Fort Smith died Jan. 25, 2005, with his family at his side. He was born June 17,1930, in Pulaski, Va.
He graduated from Hampton-Sydney College, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh.
Dr. Landis was an emeritus professor at the University of Alabama, where he held teaching, research and administrative responsibilities during his 35-year tenure there. He worked with the Redstone Arsenal in development of solid rocket fuel used for the space program and was a consultant with the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Tuscaloosa, Ala., for many years before his retirement.
He was a quiet, unassuming man with a quick wit and engaging sense of humor. Devoted to his family, he was a much loved husband, father and grandfather and he will be sorely missed.
He was a member of the Fianna Hills Baptist Church and valued the Christian fellowship there. A member of the Noon Exchange Club, he enjoyed meeting with friends each week. Dr. Landis was an organ donor with the ARORA Program.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Dr. B.J. Landis of Fort Smith; three sons, Scott Landis and his wife Dana of Houston, Dr. Doug Landis of Baltimore and Andy Landis of Austin, Texas; two grandchildren of Houston; two sisters, Ruth Rhea Legard of Abingdon, Va., and Helen Hutton of Waynesboro, Va.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Dr. Landis will be held at the Fianna Hills Baptist Church on Friday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Ken Stadler officiating under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Burial will be at the College Hill Presbyterian Church cemetery in Oxford, Miss., on Saturday, Jan. 29, at noon under the direction of the Waller Funeral Home of Oxford, Miss.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel.

Vinita Bernice Woodhull
Vinita Bernice Woodhull, 76, of Mansfield passed away Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was a retired bookkeeper for Scripps Howard News Tribune in East Los Angeles, Calif.
She was a member of Northside United Pentecostal Church in Fort Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Woodhull Jr.; one daughter, Margaret Pinnick of Whittier, Calif.; one son, John Woodhull III of Mansfield; two brothers, James Roberts of Benton and Ralph Robertson of Norman, Okla.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial at the U.S. National cemetery at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31, under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
She is survived by one son, Wayne Woodhull of Mansfield; three sisters, Katie David of Colton, Calif., Janet Jones of Mansfield and Ruth Dudley of Bryant.; three grandchildren, Vinita Meeks of Lakeside, Ariz., John Woodhull IV of Little Rock and Aimee Woodhull of Paris; and one great-granddaughter, Maya Gustafson of Mansfield.
Family will visit with friends Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home.

Christina Mooring Springs, 41, of Fort Smith died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker.
Services will be 10 a.m. today at Woodlawn Memorial Park Chapel with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith. Local arrangements are under the direction Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by two daughters, Heather Mooring of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Chantele Mooring of Fort Smith; five sons, Matthew Mooring, Joshua Mooring, Jacob Springs, Michael Springs and Daniel Springs, all of Fort Smith; parents, Eddie and Monique Repking of Fort Smith; five sisters, Laura Eagle of Roland, Kelly Repking of Fort Smith, Renne Hahn of Muskogee, Okla., Ashley Repking of Fort Smith and Britnany Myers of Fort Drum, N.Y.; one brother, Stephen Dunn of Fort Smith; and two grandchildren.

Helen Bartlett Trout, 90, of Fort Smith died Jan. 26, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sisters, Betty Bartlett of Fort Smith and Freda Linhart of Fort Smith; a sister-in-law, Norma Bartlett; and two great-nephews, Bobby and Darin Person. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Miles Trout.

Donna Kaye Hayes, 60, of Barling passed away Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Barling and the former owner of D&D Video.

Dr. T. Wayne Lanier
Dr. T. Wayne Lanier, B.S., D.M.D., is a native of Sebastian County. He graduated from Mansfield High School and attended Arkansas Tech University before enlisting in the Navy soon after the outbreak of the Korean War. Following aviation electronics training he was selected as a member of the maintenance crew of the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Team, the Blue Angles, and later made a Far East deployment to Korea aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany, CVA-34.
Following the Korean War, Dr. Lanier entered the University of Arkansas where he earned a bachelor’s degree and did graduate in education followed by a doctor of dental medicine degree from Washington University in St. Louis. During his senior years he was elected president of Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity.
Returning to Sebastian County following graduation from dental school, Dr. Lanier established a private dental practice in Fort Smith. He is a past president of the Arkansas Dental Association and was editor of the Arkansas Dental Journal. During his 10 years tenure as editor he was elected president of the American Association of Dental Editors.
Dr. Lanier served two terms on the Arkansas Public Television Commission, appointed initially by a Democrat governor and re-appointed by a Republican governor. Before leaving the commission he served two terms as chairman.
Dr. Lanier is a retired Naval Reserve captain. During the second Reagan administration he was selected by the secretary of the Navy to become the deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for Reserve Affairs. The unexpected resignation of Navy Secretary James Webb prevented Dr. Lanier from serving in that position. The Senate Armed Services Committee invited Dr. Lanier to contribute to their hearings regarding the reorganization of the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine. His report, The Navy Dental Corps and Reorganization, is a part of the Congressional Record of 8 October 1985. Dr. Lanier was appointed to the Commissioning Committee for the guided missile cruiser USS Arkansas, CGN-41.
While practicing in Fort Smith Dr. Lanier served as president of the Fort Smith Dental Society, chairman of the Arkansas-Oklahoma State Fair & Rodeo board of trustees, president of the Fort Smith Exchange Club, chairman of the Civic Advisory Committee to the city of Fort Smith, president of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, and president of the Greenwood Education Foundation. Other civic activities include serving on the boards of the Westark College (now the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith), Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Fort Smith, Fort Smith Public Library, Fort Smith United Fund, Boy Scouts of America, and Bost School for Limited Children. Dr. Lanier was a Republican candidate for governor of Arkansas in 1986.
Dr. Lanier is married
to the former Helen Barnes of Mansfield. They have two children, a son, Lance Lanier and his wife, Laura of Van Buren; a daughter, Tara and her husband, Jon Allman of San Antonio; and five grandchildren, Benjamin Lanier of Van Buren, Wren Lanier of Van Buren, Kate Lanier of Van Buren, Braden Allman of San Antonio and Kylie Allman of San Antonio.
The Laniers are Methodist and Dr. Lanier is a past chairman of the administrative board of First United Methodist in Fort Smith. Dr. Lanier retired from private practice in 1997 to accept a position on the civilian staff of Tripler Army Dental Command, Hawaii. In 1999 Dr. Lanier moved to Landstuhl, Germany, where he became the European director for the Cherokee Nation’s European Dental Contract Project, providing more than 90 American civilian dental professionals to the Army in 25 Army Dental Clinics in Europe.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.

HUNTINGTON — Gladys Marie Elmore, 74, of Huntington died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, in her home. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.

She is survived by two sisters, Leona and Pauline Elmore, both of Huntington; five brothers, Armond, Jess, Paul and Jerry Elmore, all of Huntington, and Robert Elmore of Hartford.

CHERRY HILL — Bernice Evelyn Hoban, 77, of Cherry Hill, formerly of Lombard, Ill., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, in Mena. She was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Brookfield, Ill. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Mena.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Catholic Church with burial at Cherry Hill cemetery under the direction of Hall Funeral Service of Mena.
She is survived by her husband, John; two daughters, Mary Thieme of Villa Park, Ill., and Colleen Nolte of Lambard, Ill.; four sons, John Hoban of Russellville, Patrick and Thomas Hoban, both of Joliet, Ill., and Michael Hoban of Pine Ridge; a sister, Patricia Krieger of LaGrange, Ill.; a brother, Richard Trinko of Mena; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

OZONE — Mollie Mae Webb, 69, of Ozone died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was a homemaker of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband, Harrison; four daughters, Mary Keith and Helen Whitfield, both of Ozone, Martha Busby of Fort Payne, Ala., and Bonnie Webb of Menton, Ala.; two sons, Ronald Webb of Blountsville, Ala. and Andy Webb of Ozone; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Charlie Mae Deason McWilliams, 99, of Fort Smith died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was born Aug. 24, 1905. She was a lifelong Methodist and a member of First United Methodist Church of El Dorado, Broadmoor United Methodist Church in Shreveport, La., and Fort Smith United Methodist Church in Fort Smith.
