Betty Jo Chapman
Betty Jo Chapman, 72, of Cedarville died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Cedarville, she attended Christian Life Ministries on Uniontown Road, she was a retired nurse for Oak Lodge Nursing Home and was the widow of Carman Chapman.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Christian Life Ministries with burial at Hall cemetery in Natural Dam under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by two daughters, Darla Wiley Of Cedarville and Rebecca Walker of El Centro, Calif.; two sons, Clovis and Larry Miller, both of Cedarville; a stepdaughter, Donna Unden of California; three stepsons, Eldon Chapman, and Ike and John Lizaragua, all of California; a sister, Joyce Upton of Uban City, Calif.; four brothers, Bill Garrett of Van Buren, Robert Garrett of Alma, Johnny and Paul Garrett, both of Cedarville; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Billy Garrett, Rickey Garrett, Donnie Garrett, Justin Roberts, Stanley Sharp and Kevin Bean.
Granville C. Carpenter
Granville C. Carpenter, 86, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was born April 22, 1918, in Mountain View community near Booneville. He was employed at Fort Smith Smelter for several years, and retired from civil service at Fort Chaffee. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps and World War II, and a member of the VFW in Fort Smith.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Temple Baptist Church in Fort Smith with burial at Carolan cemetery in Booneville under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Dailey Kelley Carpenter of the home; one stepdaughter, Janice M. Kelley of Reno, Nev.; one stepgrandson, James P. Kessler of Reno, Nev.; four nephews, Howard G. Carpenter and wife Valerie of Hulbert, Okla., John H. Carpenter Jr. and wife Charlotte of Claremore, Okla., Kenneth M. Carpenter of Fort Smith, and Edgar L. Carpenter Jr. and wife Linda of Fort Smith; nine nieces, Elwanda Hull and husband Howard of Erie, Pa., Oneta Lucenta and husband Frank of Tulsa, Fannie Marie Sanders of Tulsa, Frances Donberger and husband Bill of Broken Arrow, Okla., Barbara A. McDermott of Broken Arrow, Okla., Carolyn Gann and husband Melvin of Fort Smith, Janice A. Butler of Fort Smith, Erma Dean Holmberg and husband Richard of Fort Smith, and Norma Taylor and husband Dale of Greenwood; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Carpenter of Fort Smith and Leona Underwood of Gulfport, Miss.; one brother-in-law, Leland Dailey and wife Violet of Pine Bluff; numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Woodson and Sarah Adeline Pennington Carpenter; two sisters, Nettie L. Carpenter Smith and Dovie A. Carpenter; and four brothers, John H. Carpenter, Elmer L. Carpenter, Samuel M. “Pete” Carpenter, and Edgar L. Carpenter.
Viewing will be 1 to 9 p.m. today at McConnell Funeral Home in Greenwood, where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be John Carpenter, Kenneth Carpenter, Eddie Carpenter, Richard Holmberg, Steven Holmberg and Dale Taylor.
Mary Kate Carruth Richards
Mary Kate Carruth Richards, 88, of Lavaca died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, in Charleston. She was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Lavaca to Will Carruth and Ada Weaver Carruth. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lavaca and a charter member of Lavaca Senior Citizens Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Enoch Richards; four brothers, Norris, Harace, Carl and James Carruth; and four sisters, Bessie Hunter, Bonnie Stewart, Addie Cook and Jo Smite.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Smith Mortuary Chapel with burial at Carruth cemetery northeast of Lavaca under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
She is survived by three sisters-in-law, Helen, Reba and Eunice Carruth, all of Lavaca; and numerous nieces and nephews considered as her children.
Pallbearers will be nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Lavaca Senior Citizens Center members.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Scott Nelms
Scott Nelms, 39, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, in his home after a long battle with cancer. He was a self-employed concrete construction worker. He was preceded in death by his mother, Paula Valdes; and one brother, Billy Joe Nelms Jr.
Memorial service will be Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 7 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home in Greenwood with Sister Frances Baker officiating.
He is survived by his father, Billy Nelms; one sister, Summer Valdes; and one brother, Cary Nelms, all of Fort Smith.
Johnnie “J.K.” Shepard
Johnnie “J.K.” Shepard, 68, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, in a local hospital. He was a retired roofing contractor, a member of Abundant Life Fellowship, was head deacon and head director of Abundant Life Fellowship Food Bank. He was a retired Air Force veteran and was a Mason with Belle Point Lodge No. 20.
Ministers on the service will be the Rev. Buddy Strickler and the Rev. Wayne Hall. The family will be having dinner after the service at Abundant Life Fellowship, 822 N. Fifth St. in Fort Smith.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Putman Funeral Home Chapel with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Donna of the home; four sons, James and Patrick Shepard, both of Barling, Donald Shepard of Lowell and Steven Shepard of Springdale; a brother, Henry Shepard of Mountainburg; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be James, Donald, Patrick, Steven and Brandon Shepard, Aaron and David Shepard and Bobby Woodrome. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Joe Nguyen and Sean Harvey.

Randolph Edwin Scarbrough
Randolph Edwin Scarbrough, 56, of Conway died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, in Little Rock. Born in Fort Smith, he was an educator, employed by the Department of Education in Little Rock and a member of the Church of Christ. He was an Army veteran serving in Vietnam.
Survivors include his wife, Regina Matthews Scarbrough of Conway; two sons, Matt Scarbrough of Walnut Ridge and Tucker Scarbrough of Conway; his parents, Clarence F. and Edwina Scarbrough of Van Buren; two sisters, Claudia Leftwich of Fort Smith and JoEllen Moore of Van Buren; two brothers, Ronald Dean Scarbrough of Kansas City, Mo., and Richard Scarbrough of Greer’s Ferry; and two grandsons, Zachary and Dylan Scarbrough of Walnut Ridge.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Arkansas State Veterans cemetery in North Little Rock.
Visitation is today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Roller-McNut Funeral Home in Conway.
Curtis Schmitt
MAGAZINE — Curtis Mark Schmitt, 48, of Magazine died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, in Magazine. He was a welder.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Roberts Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Booneville with burial at Swilling cemetery near Magazine.
He is survived by his wife, Oleta Brewer of Magazine; three sons, Kevin Schmitt of the home, Brian Schmitt of Magazine, and Wade of Booneville; his parents, Glen Schmitt of Magazine and Kathryn Schmitt of Paris; a sister, Kathy Davis of Paris; two brothers, Russ Schmitt of Magazine and Doug Schmitt of Seattle; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Glen, Russ, Doug, Brian, Wade, Kevin and Brad Schmitt.

CLARKSVILLE — Wilma Dean Payne, 77, of Clarksville died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, in Clarksville. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Clarksville.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville with burial at Oakland cemetery in Clarksville.
She is survived by her husband, Don; three sons, Larry Reece of Mount Ida, Don Payne of Apex, N.C., and Kenneth Wood of California; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Bettie Wilson
MULBERRY — Bettie L. Willson, 99, of Mulberry died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, in Alma. She was born Nov. 3, 1905, in Dyer. She worked on the line for Allen Canning Co. and was the widow of Tom Willson.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shaffer Funeral Home in Mulberry with burial at New cemetery in Mulberry.
She is survived by two daughters, Jessie Blanton of Pokeville, Ky. and Wanda Campbell of West Point, Calif.; three sons, Edgar, William and Joe Willson, all of Mulberry; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jim, Randy, Bobby, Donny and Ronny Willson and Joseph Fleener.

SCRANTON — Mary Dana Ihle, 62, of Scranton died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, in Paris.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Roller Funeral Home Chapel in Paris with burial at Wares Chapel cemetery in Dublin.
She is survived by three sisters, Dortha Marcus of Hobbs, N.M., Helen Kaelin of Fort Smith, and Sue Koenig of Subiaco.
Pallbearers will be Michael, Kevin, Brian, Greg, Joseph, Timmy and Peter Kaelin.
Loyd Hicks
MAGAZINE — Loyd Daniel Hicks, 45, of Magazine died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, in Magazine. He was born Nov. 2, 1959, in Los Angles. He worked as a construction worker, a volunteer fire fighter, first responder and EMT with the Magazine Fire Department.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Solid Rock Pentecostal Church in Magazine with burial at Evans cemetery under the direction of Roberts Funeral Home of Booneville.
He is survived by two sons, Daniel Hicks of Magazine and Christopher Hicks of Fayetteville; his mother, Nelda Baird of Henderson, Texas, and his stepfather, L.J. Baird of Henderson, Texas; a sister, Sandra Gardener of Henderson, Texas; and a brother, Boyd Hicks of Magazine.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Staton, Clarence Adair, Raymon Westmoreland, John Hicks Jr., Brooks Smith and Jonathan Davis.

CLARKSVILLE — Susan K. Magby, 52, of Clarksville died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, in her home. She was born May 8, 1952, in Sterling, Colo. She was a graduate of Hot Springs High School in South Dakota and a member of Stillwell Bible Baptist Church.
Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Stillwell Bible Baptist Church. The body was cremated under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home of Clarksville.
She is survived by her husband, John; a daughter, Brenda Magby of Bentonville; a son, Bernie Magby of Clarksville; her parents, Bud and Eunice Marks of Oral, S.D.; a sister, Linda Marks of Denver; and her twin brother, Willie Marks of Sheridan, Wyo.
Opal B. Pigg
Opal B. Pigg, 89, of Fort Smith passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Baptist Church, where she served for over 50 years as a Sunday school teacher for the children’s department. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil W. Pigg.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Estes of Fort Smith; sons, James Pigg of Van Buren and Roy Pigg of Moore, Okla.; seven grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with interment to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be John and Larry Horn, Rob and Rhett Pigg, Rick Estes and David Bernard.
The family will visit with friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ruth I. Maas
Ruth I. Maas, 74, of Fort Smith passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Altar Society, Presentation Circle and Quilters Guild and a volunteer for St. Edward Mercy Medical Center. She was the retired owner and operator of Carousel Flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Maas.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Maas of Dallas; two sons, Gary Maas of Madison, Ind., and Dr. Robert Maas of Des Moines, Iowa; three sisters, Melba Schultheis of Fort Branch, Ind., Kleo Selby-Beasley of Claremont, Fla., and Dorothy Addy of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Norman Rexing of Mooresville, Ind.; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Catholic Church with interment to follow at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
