Beverly Rollins Carpenter
Beverly Rollins Carpenter, 48, of Calhoun, Ga., formerly of Fort Smith, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
She was born Thursday, Nov. 8, 1956, in Heidelberg, Germany, and was the daughter of William Rollins and Sylvia Rofkahr Rollins of Fort Smith. She was employed by Mohawk-Home Industries for 28 years as supervisor in the sample department.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Carpenter of Calhoun; her parents, William and Sylvia Rollins; four sisters, Deborah Rollins, Cynthia “Cindy” George; Cheryl “Sherri” Davis and Karen Przybysz, all of Fort Smith; two brothers, Douglas “Doug” Rollins of Fort Smith and David Rollins of Van Buren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, seven nieces, 10 nephews, six aunts, five uncles, four stepchildren and five step-grandchildren.
She was of the Roman Catholic faith. Funeral service was held on Nov. 14 at Thomas Funeral Home with burial service at Gordon Memorial Gardens in Calhoun.
Vere Carty
Vere Carty, 88, of Mulberry died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Franklin County, the daughter of Carmen E. Patrick and Lula Peters. She was a homemaker and a member of Vine Prairie Baptist Church in Mulberry, preceded in death by husband James Ray Carty.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Mulberry with burial at New cemetery in Mulberry under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Mulberry.
She is survived by a daughter, Kaye Wheeler and husband Darrell of Mulberry; two sons, Roger Carty and wife Sandy of Mulberry and Danny Carty and wife Cindy of Mulberry; two sisters, Pauline Helsem and Patsy Van Buren, both of Yuba City, Calif.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be John David Pannell, Bill House, Jessie House, Jeff Marvin, Ricky Huggins and Justin Gatewood.
The family will visit with friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mulberry Chapel, 606 Church St. in Mulberry.
Verna Kissinger
Verna Kissinger, 92, of Van Buren died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Bethlehem Freewill Baptist Church and the Home Demonstration Club of Van Buren. Mrs. Kissinger was preceded in death by her husband, Carl.
She is survived by a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Gene Estep of Alma; her caregiver and her husband, Coreena and Loyd Cockrum of Van Buren; one sister, Nellie Burkhart of Rudy; three grandchildren, Pam Barry and Darla Bond, both of Alma, and Karen Justice of Fort Smith; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Sonny Reynolds, Bert Kenner Jr., Gene Estep, Jimmy and Bobby Burkhart and Ricky Bond.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Robin Cuevas
Robin Denise Cuevas, 48, of Fort Smith died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born April, 11, 1956, in Tacoma, Wash. She was a former truck driver for SDS Transportation and attended Crossroads Church in Alma.
Memorial service will be 5:30 p.m. today at Crossroads Church in Alma. The body will be cremated under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
She is survived by three daughters, Danielle Davidson and Louise Cuevas, both of California, and Samantha Cuevas of Alma; a son, Ricardo Cuevas of California; a sister, Cherly Davidson of Fort Smith; and a brother, Rick Davidson of Fort Smith.
Bessie Kuykendall
PARIS — Bessie L. Kuykendall, 98, of Paris died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, in Charleston. She was a homemaker and a longtime member of Paris Church of Christ and Paris Senior Citizens.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Roller Funeral Home Chapel in Paris with burial at cemetery Ridge cemetery in Etna.
She is survived by a daughter, Lila Grist of Charleston; two sons, Edsel Kuykendall of Howe, Texas, and Floyd Kuykendall of Paris; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be friends. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Greenhurst Nursing Home.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Robert Walston
RANGER, Texas — Robert “Bob” B. Walston, 74, of Ranger, Texas, formerly of Mena, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, in Texas. He was born Jan. 1, 1930, in Mena and was raised in Shady. He was a Air Force veteran, a retired mechanic and welder for Ames Construction in Phoenix and a member of the American Legion. He was the widower of Norma Walston.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Shady cemetery under the direction of Hall Funeral Service of Mena.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; a daughter, Virginia Broyles of Pettigrew; three sons, James Walston of Pettigrew, Jason Walston of Pendleton, Ind., and Bobby Walston of Ranger, Texas; a sister, Othele Walker of Texarkana; a twin brother, Bill Walston of Missouri; and four grandchildren.
Stanley Bassler IV
MAGAZINE — Stanley Harrison “Tobby” Bassler IV of Magazine died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, in Paris. He was a tile man for Watt Tile Service of Paris, a high school graduate and a Roman Catholic.
The body was cremated under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady Of Assumption Catholic Church in Booneville.
He is survived by his mother, Susan Jorden of Magazine; his father, Stanley Bassler III of Lebanon, Tenn.; two sisters, Latasha Bassler of Spiro and Nicole Jorden of Booneville; two brothers, Christopher Bassler of Magazine and Joshua Bassler of Lebanon, Tenn.; his grandparents, Bob and Wanda West of Magazine and Stanley and Patricia Bassler of Magazine; and great-grandmother, Mercedes Bessler of Pittsburgh.
Lula DeLeon
MANSFIELD — Lula DeLeon, 83, of Mansfield died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in her home. She was a retired accountant and rancher and a veteran of World War II; she attended Mansfield First Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mansfield First Baptist Church with burial at Beverly cemetery in Beverly, Kan. Local arrangements under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Mansfield.
She is survived by three daughters, Orla Engstrom of Arkansas, Doreen DeLeon of Hollywood, Fla., and Nathalia Hiatt of Ponca City, Okla.; and two grandchildren.
The body may be viewed from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Grace Knight
Grace C. Knight, 91, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a member of Goddard United Methodist Church in Fort Smith, the Wesley Sunday school class, Chancellor Choir and Republican Women’s Association. She worked for Salvation Army with the Angel Tree, AARP and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was the widow of George Knight.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Goddard United Methodist Church with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary.
She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Moore of Fort Smith; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bill, Michael, Timothy and Derek Moore.

Hugh S. Lewers
Hugh S. Lewers, 95, of Alma died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in his home. He was born May 9, 1909, in Alma. He was a lifelong resident of Alma, a member of First Presbyterian Church in Alma, a former co-owner of Lewers & Bradley Grocery Store, and retired owner of Lewers Hardware of Alma.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Alma City cemetery under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
He is survived by a son, Joe Lee and wife Doris Lewers of Alma; two grandchildren, Lee Lewers of Alma and Deena and husband Billy Winn of the home; and two great-grandchildren, Cassie and Colby Winn of the home.
Pallbearers will be Jan Nordin, Jim Ogilvie, Guy and Tom Wilson, Billy Winn, Earl Owens and Walter Kincy.
The family will visit with friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, 917 U.S. 64 East in Alma.
Lula H. DeLeon
We will surely miss Lula H. DeLeon, beloved mother of Doreen, Nathalia and Orla. Departed from this life Monday, Nov. 22, 2004. Born in Kansas on Nov. 18, 1921.
Our mother was an accomplished lady whose list of accomplishments included: World War II veteran. She was one of a few selected ladies who honorably served as a BAM (Beautiful American Marine), woman’s division. Following this she married
Harold Craig and enlisted as a Red Cross volunteer and lived in Europe for several years.
Upon her return to Arkansas she opened and operated a coal mine fulfilling her father’s dream. Several years later she remarried
and adopted three girls, where she strived to produce a nurturing and loving environment.
She was an accomplished artist, which included drawings, paintings and stained glass. She also was an excellent seamstress, cake creator and story teller. An avid reader, she was knowable in many facets of life.
During her lifetime she was employed as an accountant, plant manager, night watchman and constable. Her greatest passions in life included raising her three girls, and her innate love of animals. During the latter part of her life, she became a rancher where she raised her beloved Brahmans. A lifetime of dog and cat ownership produced wonderful stories about her relationship with animals. Mother, you live on in our hearts and minds. We love you.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. today at Mansfield First Baptist Church with interment at Beverly cemetery in Beverly, Kan. Local arrangements by Martin Funeral Home of Mansfield.

Naomi Tanner
GOSHEN — Naomi E. Tanner, 77, of Goshen died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in Fayetteville. She was born June 18, 1927, in Jackson, Miss. She was a homemaker, of the Pentecostal faith and the widow of Marvin Tanner.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove cemetery under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by six daughters, Mittie McCormick, Martha Carter and Mary Dillard, all of Goshen, Shirley Tanner of Portland, Ore., Linda Dial of Claremore, Okla., and Patricia Bird of Washington; two sons, James Tanner of Mena and Joseph Tanner of Claremore; 27 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
John Jones Sr.
John W. Jones Sr., 83, of Van Buren died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, in a local nursing home. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired supervisor for Allen Canning Co.
Funeral will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene; two daughters, Francean Pense and Loretta Hunter, both of Van Buren; three sons, John Jones Jr. of Muldrow, Randy Jones of Van Buren, and Billy Jones of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a sister, Francis Baxter of Wynne; a brother, Marvin Jones of Pocola; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
William Kelley
COVE — William Quince Kelley, 90, of Cove died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in Mena. He was born May 5, 1914, in Erath County, Texas. He was the oldest member of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and music director. He was a longtime employee of Piggly Wiggly and the widower Mildred Kelley.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Cove with burial at Pleasant Grove cemetery under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
He is survived by two sons, Bill and Curtis Kelley, both of Cove; two sisters, Lorene Williams and Eloise Golden, both of Mena; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Earl Risenhoover
ROLAND — Earl R. Risenhoover, 73, of Roland died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was born Nov. 9, 1931, in Sequoyah County. He was self-employed truck driver, vending machine operator, Core Drilling Foundation and a Protestant.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Agent Funeral Home Chapel in Sallisaw with burial at Brushy cemetery in Sallisaw.
He is survived by a daughter, Lisa of Sallisaw; a son, Edwin of Glencoe, Okla.; three sisters, Maggie Carter of Manford, Okla., Ona Hightower and Donna Gist, both of Sallisaw; two brothers, Bill Risenhoover of Stigler, Okla., and Joe Risenhoover of Sallisaw; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Fair, Clinton Enyart, Dale Harrison, Steve Garvin and Keith Tubbs.
