Mary Ann Fant
Mary Ann Fant, 87, of Fort Smith died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, in her home. She was born Jan. 20, 1917, in St. Mary’s, W.Va. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Harlan Benton Fant.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by two daughters, Elaine Walker and Virginia Bruce, both of Fort Smith; two sons, William “Bill” Fant of Fort Smith and Jack Lee Fant of Springdale; a sister, Kathleen Allmon of Wellsville, Ohio; a brother, Robert Boley of Wellsville; 12 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Todd McCorkle, Tommy Bagwell, Tony and Michael Fant, Phillip Bruce and Joel Bowman.
Honorary pallbearers will be David and Kevin Bruce and Mark Walker.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Billy Oliver
MANDEVILLE, La. — Billy Joe Oliver, 78, of Mandeville, formerly of Fort Smith, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, in Mandeville. He was a convention decorator, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion.
Memorial service and burial of cremains will be 11 a.m. today at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Schoen Funeral Home of Mandeville.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters, Linda Noble of Houston and Charlotte Oliver of Mandeville; a son, Billy Reed Oliver of Seattle; two sisters, Mary Dial of Sun City, Calif., and Deane Greene of Atlanta, Texas; a brother, LeMoyne Oliver of Bellflower, Calif.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

PARIS — Otto Schmalz, 90, of Paris died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Catholic War Veterans, Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion and the Polar Bears Association of World War II.
Rosary will be 7:30 p.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paris. Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial at St. Joseph cemetery in Paris under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
He is survived by his wife, Freida; two daughters, Jeanette Frederick of Subiaco and Linda Ussery of Dickinson, Texas; a son, Larry Schmalz of Paris; a sister, Mary Schmitz of Paris; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Glynn Frederick, Brian Ussery and Ben, Joe, Mike and Dan Schmalz.
Honorary pallbearers will be Catholic War Veterans.

NEW BLAINE — Rocky L. Woods, 47, of New Blaine died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004. He was of the Christian faith and was employed at Suzie Q’s in Fort Smith.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Murry Funeral Home in Paris.
He is survived by a son, Bobby Woods of Roland; his father, Joe Woods of New Blaine; and four brothers, Jody Woods of Estell, N.C., Mark Woods of Eriell, N.J., Danny Woods of Paris and Mitch Woods of Greenwood.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ruth F. Futral, 83, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker, a member of First Baptist Church, and all-around sweet lady. She is survived by three daughters, Sandra and husband Edward Thicksten of Alma, Sharon and husband Charles Gunzburg of Gaithersburg, Md., and Barbara and husband Jeffrey Tribby of Lakeland, Fla. Seven grandchildren, Anastasis May, Cpt. David Tribby, Michael Tribby, Elizabeth Tribby, Spec. Regina Powell, Chris Thicksten and Karl Gunzburg. One great-grandchild, Delaney Tribby.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 1 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith. ST. LOUIS — James Dorsey Garner Jr., 63, of St. Louis, formerly of Fort Smith, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, in a St. Louis hospital. He was born March 16, 1941, in Stanton, Tenn. He was a retired staff sergeant with the Army, a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service and a member of Communion Church Ministries in St. Louis.

PARKS — Roger L. “Bill” Martin, 56, of Parks died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in a Fayetteville hospital.

OZARK — Joseph “Bud” McLaughlin, 87, of Ozark died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Ozark. He was born July 9, 1917, in Jethro. He was retired from the State Highway Department.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Belt cemetery in Ozark under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; a daughter, Sharon Blan of Ozark; two sons, Roger McLaughlin and Steve Carpenter, both of Ozark; two sisters, Pauline Hemingway of Georgia and Imogene Patterson of Oklahoma; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Rocky L. Woods, 47, of New Blaine passed away Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, of natural causes. He was of the Christian faith and was employed at Suzie Q’s Club in Fort Smith. He was preceded in the death by his mother, Dorothy “King” Woods of New Blaine.
He is survived by his son, Bobby Lee Woods of Roland; his father, Joe Woods of New Blaine; and four brothers, Jody Woods of Estell, N.C., Mark Woods of Eriell, N.J., Danny of Paris and Mitch Woods of Greenwood. He had four nephews, Toby and Jacob Woods of Paris, Andrew Woods of Eriell, N.J., and Brandon Wiley of Fort Smith; three nieces, Amber and Heather Woods, both of Paris, and Tamara Woods of Hackett.
There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. today at Murry Funeral Home in Paris.

Dale Garner, 69, of Greenwood died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in Houston. He was born April 29, 1935, and retired from the corrugated packaging business after many years and several positions.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 23 at the First Baptist Church in Greenwood with burial at Liberty cemetery under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Sue Garner of the home; two sons, Dr. Steve Garner and wife, Cheryl Black Garner, of Houston and Stan Garner and wife, Melissa Gibbs Garner, of Greenwood; one daughter, Karen McCullen and husband, Jon, of Greenwood; one brother, Frank J. Garner Jr. of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister Dorothy Jean Johnson of Clarendon; and six grandchildren.

Catherine Wright Cook of Daytona Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, in Daytona Beach. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church in Fort Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Cook.
She is survived by two sons, Roger Cook of Austin, Texas, and William Cook Jr. of Carbondale, Colo.; a granddaughter, Christa Renee Holt of Austin, Texas; one grandson, Russell Cook of Oahu, Hawaii. Also, four cousins, Betty Ann Creaghe of Denver, Marion Doss, Franklin Hawkins and Bob Hawkins, all of Fort Smith.
She was a native of Fort Smith and graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1942. Also, she was a charter member of PEO Chapter AS.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with a private burial at Forest Park cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

STIGLER — Bruce Lamont Hood, 68, of Stigler died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in Stigler. He was a university professor.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Hood of Connecticut; two sons, Jeff Hood of California and James Hood of Alaska; a sister, Patsy of Colorado; two brothers, Jim and John Hood, both of California; and two grandchildren.

BOONEVILLE — Kevin Scott Buffington, 38, of Booneville died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in his home.

Helen Yarbrough, 90, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born May 6, 1914, in Muskogee, Okla. She was a homemaker, a member of First United Methodist Church, the Stephens Society at First Gleaners Sunday school of First United Methodist Church.
Memorial service was held Thursday at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Meadows of Bellville, Texas; a sister, Lucille Cox of Sedona, Ariz.; a brother, C.A. Overstreet Jr. of Keota; and two grandchildren.

J.C. Young, 81, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in a local hospital. He was a Army veteran of World War II and a graduate of the National School of Aeronautics and Air Craft.
