Marie Bernard
Marie Bernard, 89, of Van Buren died Sunday, April 18, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a member of the Concord Baptist Church, a former member of the Bible Study Fellowship and a member of the Uniontown Extension Homemakers Club. She was the retired postmaster of the Uniontown Post Office after 30 years of service and was the widow of M.H. “Manie” Bernard.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at the Ocker Memorial Chapel with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by three daughters, Judy Oliver of Van Buren, Marlene Denny of Collinsville, Okla., and Peggy Baker of Conroe, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
John Robert Burns
John Robert Burns, 52, died April 11, 2004, at his home in Fort Smith. He was born June 8, 1951, in Pine Bluff, a son of the late Homer and Rubye Gilkey Burns.
He servied his country in the United States Army from December 1971 thru December 1974, received an honorable discharge and re-enlisted in March of 1979 and served through September 1983. He served in the Vietname War as an airborne/ranger in the 3rd Battalion 75th Infantry. He received the U.S. Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Expeditionary Forces Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal, RVN Gallantry Cross with Palm, the RVN Campaign Medal, Airborne Wings, Combat Infantryman’s Bade and the Army Meritorious Citation. Upon returning to the United States, he served as an EMTA in Clarksville and received an associate of applied science degree in law enforcement. He finished his career by serving the city of Fort Smith as a police officer until his medical retirement in 1992.
Cremation services are by Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith. Burial will be at the Arkansas State Veterans cemetery in North Little Rock.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday, April 23, 2004, at Fort Smith National cemetery Pavilion under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
Survivors are a sister, Sandra “Sandy” Mois and her husband, Alan of Conway; a brother, Jim Burns; a stepbrother, Harry Burns of Norfolk, Va.; nephews Shawn and Cory Moix of Conway and Samual Burns of North Little Rock; and his beloved cocker spaniel, Corky.
Honorary pallbearers are the United States Army personnel and the city of Fort Smith Police Department personnel.

Dorothy Sue Cross Denton
Dorothy Sue Cross Denton was born March 21, 1923, in Blytheville to Reba Vivion and George Cross and was a member of the First Christian Church there. She retired in 1989 in Ozark after working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for more than 35 years.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Susan Alston and husband, Ronnie of Ozark; son, Carl of Poteau; nephew, John Cross and wife, Candee of Fort Smith; sister-in-law, Sue Cross of Fort Smith; grandchildren, Beth Chancey and husband, Charley, Ronnie Keith Alston and wife Lisa; plus six great-great-grandgirls, Charleigh Ann, Kaitlynd, Brandi, Megan, Monica and Abigail, all of Ozark.
Dorothy spent her last days on this earth at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith surrounded by family and friends. She requested that she have no funeral and that her ashes would be scattered to the winds. Family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society in her honor.
Marian Mae McCurdy
Marian Mae McCurdy, 54, of Van Buren died Tuesday, April 20, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born Sept. 1, 1949, in Mount Pleasant, Mich., to Harold L. and Coralie J. Thorp. When she was 9, they moved to Breckenridge, Colo. On May 6, 1967, she married
Gary Lee Cross in Buena Vista, Colo. They had three children. In 1973, they moved to Rudy, and in 1982 Gary and Marian divorced and Marian married
Charles McCurdy of Van Buren. Charles had a son who was welcomed by Marian. Over the years, they moved to Colorado and California. In 1999, they moved back to Van Buren and have made this their final home. She attended the Butterfield Assembly of God church. She is preceded in death by her father, Harold L. Thorp; and a brother, Loyd Thorp.
Funeral servied will be 1 p.m. Friday, April 23, 2004, at Ocker Memorial Chapel with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by her husband, Charles McCurdy of the home; one daughter, Connie Catherine Zeleznikar and her husband, Shane of Barling; three sons, Gary Lee Cross and his wife, Cherise of Van Buren, Ronald Bruce Cross and his wife, Valarie of Pahrump, Nev., and Charlie McCurdy of Van Buren; her mother, Coralie Thorp of Buena Vista, Colo.; two sisters, Pam Schneiter of Buena Vista, Colo., and Gloria Sanders and her husband, John of Atlanta, Texas; a brother, Doug Thorp and his wife, Rhonda of Muldrow; seven grandchlidren, Bruce, Shana, Benjamin, Ashley, Anthony, Brandon and Ronnie; several nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The family will visit with friends Thursday, April 22, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, 700 Jefferson, Van Buren.
Guy Lee Haralson
Guy Lee Haralson, 34, of Fort Smith died Sunday, April 18, 2004, in a local hospital. He was a resident of Fort Smith and an employee of Moll Plastic. He was preceded in death by his father, David Haralson; and a sister, Stacy Lynn Dodd.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Ocker Memorial Chapel under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by his mother, Sharon Haralson of Fort Smith; a nephew, Denver Joel Dodd of Alma; several aunts and uncles.

Terri White
Terri White, 39, of Greenwood died Sunday, April 18 with her husband, Ed White, in their home in Greenwood. She was a beautician, owner of Terri’s Barber Shop in Greenwood and a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 22 at the Greenwood United Methodist Churh with burial at Liberty cemetery under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by one son, Nicholas Brandt of the home; one daughter, Brittany Ann White of the home; her parents, Vincent and Helen Claire Mueller of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, Kevin Mueller of Sheboygan, Wis., and Bryan Mueller of New Orleans; maternal grandmother, Helen Claire Shea of Omaha; mother-in-law, Barbara White of Hattiesburg, Miss.; three sisters-in-law; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ed White
Ed White, 39, of Greenwood died Sunday, April 18 with his wife, Terri White, in their home in Greenwood. He was employed at Weyerhaeuser Co. in Fort Smith, a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 22 at the Greenwood United Methodist Church with burial at Liberty cemetery under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
He is survived by one son, Nicholas Brandt of the home; one daughter, Brittany Ann White of the home; mother, Barbara Keller White of Hattiesburg, Miss.; three sisters, Mary Windham of Seminary, Miss., Martah Williams of Hattiesburg and Lisa Barrett-Handley of Venice, Fla.; four nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph White.

John E. Chamberlin
John E. Chamberlin, 86, of Fort Smith passed away on Monday, April 19, 2004, at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center surrounded by members of his family. On the other side, his wife of 57 years, who died in 2000, awaited him. As a young man, he served his country with honor as a horse cavalry sergeant major and infantry first sergeant during World War II and an artillery master sergeant during the 
Korean War and was a father figure to men under his command. He was a member of Goddard United Methodist Church for more 40 years. He and his wife served as youth counselors for the youth fellowship. He was also PTA president, Scoutmaster and Cub master in Clarksville. He was elected county auditor of Humboldt County, Iowa, the county of his birth. As manager of hatcheries in Clarksville for Prebo and Sons and later in Fort Smith for OK Foods, he inspired his employees by example to work hard and still have a good time. He loved to go fishing with his buddies and to watch baseball. He was not only respected, but enjoyed and loved by family, friends, employees, neighbors and all those whose lives he touched. He will be sadly missed and gratefully remembered by all those who love him.
Funeral service will be noon April 22, 2004, at Goddard United Methodist Church with burial at the U.S. National cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
He is survived by his two sons: John G. Chamberlin and his wife, Shannon, of Little Rock and Charles E. Chamberlin and wife, Susan, of Arcata Calif; one brother: Alden M. Chamberlin of Monroe, Iowa; five grandchildren: Katharyn Daniel of Loveland, Colo., Mary Chamberlin of Little Rock, Johnnie Chamberlin of Little Rock, Sarah Chamberlin of Arcata, Calif., and Matthew Chamberlin of Los Angeles; one great-grandchild: Lorelai Daniel; and by his extended family, his newest daughter, Maria Sidorenko, an international exchange student from Russia; Jim and Caye Hurt; and others not too many to love but too numerous to mention.
Pallbearers will be Larry Gordon, William May, Gerald Geren, Guy Smith, David Blount and Tommy Fowler.
Honorary pallbearers will be Sam Brown, Ragon Call, Lloyd Conrady, Glynn Shults and Bill Larsen.
The family will visit with friends after the interment on Thursday, April 22, 2004, at 2900 S. 39th St., Fort Smith.

Joe Neely
HEBER SPRINGS — Joe C. Neely, 71, of Heber Springs died Saturday, April 17, 2004, in Searcy. He was born Feb. 7, 1933, in Dalhart, Texas. He was of the nondenominational faith, a mason contractor, a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association and a member of the American Paint Horse Association.
Memorial service will be noon today at Mountainburg First Assembly of God in Mountainburg. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Olmstead Funeral Home of Heber Springs.
He is survived by his wife Linda; a daughter, Melody Ebeling of Lubbock, Texas; two step-daughters, Carrie Kessler of Roland and Cathy Botchlet of Oklahoma City; three sons, Mike Neely of Catoosa, Okla., Kyle Neely of Rogers and Kane Neely of Alma; and 10 grandchildren.

Adam Mospan
McCURTAIN, Okla. — Adam Mospan, 87, of McCurtain died Friday, April 16, 2004, in Arlington Heights, Ill. He was a graduate of McCurtain High School, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stigler and past member of Knights of Columbus in Poteau and the McCurtain senior citizens organization. He did surveying work for the Civilian Conservation Corps in his youth. He was a rural mail carrier and substitute postmaster for United Postal Service for many years and raised cattle and farmed.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with burial at Miners cemetery in McCurtain under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Stigler.
Edwin Towry
COVE — Edwin Towry, 79, of Cove died Monday, April 19, 2004, in Mena. He was born May 19, 1924 in Albany, Texas. He was a World War II Army veteran, where he served in the South Pacific and received a Purple Heart, Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, AP Theater Liberation Ribbon and a Bronze Star. He was a truck driver, auto mechanic and member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Vandervoort.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Vandervoort First Baptist Church with burial at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Cove under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
He is survived by his wife, Eda; a daughter, Sharon Aleshire of Mena; a son, Charles Towry of Wickes; a sister, Ruth Bunch of Chester, Calif.; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
Virginia Baker
BENTONVILLE — Virginia A. Baker, 66, of Bentonville, formerly of Fort Smith, died Monday, April 19, 2004 in her home. She was born Oct. 4, 1937, in Hope. She was a homemaker, a member of the Central United Methodist Church and God’s Daughters of Rogers.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Stamps with burial in Sardis cemetery in Stamps.
She is survived by her husband, Wilson; a daughter, Beveraly Baker; a son, Wilson Baker Jr.; and a grandchild.

Carl Parlement
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Carl Parlement, 91, of Springfield, formerly of Big Fork, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, in Oregon. He was born July 4, 1912, in Big Fork. He moved to Mena in 1943 where he worked as a truck driver. He worked at Booth Kelly Mill in Springfield, Ore., and retired from Wood Components in Eugene, Ore. He was the widower of Thelma Parlement.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Big Fork under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
He is survived by three daughters, Jean Harris of Fort Worth, Texas, Carlean McMellon of Lincoln City, Ore., and Carolyn Caudell of Springfield; a sister Lucille Tuberville of Oklahoma City; a brother Eugene Parlement of Mount Ida; 12 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 31 great-great-grandchildren.
Boyd Birdsong
ALTUS — Boyd Elmer Birdsong, 90, of Altus died Monday, April 19, 2004, in Altus. He was born April 10, 1914, in Clarksville. He was a furniture maker, an Army veteran and the widower of Madeline Birdsong.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Houston cemetery in Altus under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
He is survived by three daughters, Peggy Hennessey of Alix, Inga Tobin of Altus and Ava Imotichev of Norwalk, Calif.; two sons, Don Birdsong of Sacramento, Calif., and Hugh Birdsong of Martinza, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

CENTRAL CITY — Lillian Irene Clinard, 86, of Central City died Sunday, April 18, 2004, in Charleston. She was born April 8, 1918, in Barling. She was a homemaker, a member of Mount Harmony Baptist Church in Greenwood and the widower of Charles Decker and Joseph Clinard.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Central Freewill Baptist Church in Central City with burial at Barling cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
She is survived by two daughters, Doris Neihouse of Central City and Pat Friedline of Austin; two sons, Connie Clinard and Fred Clinard, both of Central City; 27 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
