James Russell Young, 53, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in a local hospital. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, a Marine veteran and an associate for Wal-Mart.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Ocker Memorial Chapel in Van Buren.
He is survived by his mother, Emmaloisa Welch of Oklahoma City; three sisters, Freda Van Ginkel of Fort Smith, Marcia Martin of Augusta, Ga., and Glenda Wilkinson of Oklahoma City; two brothers, Charles Young of Fort Smith and Lesley Welch of Bakersfield, Calif.
The family will visit with friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Elton Freeman
OKLAHOMA CITY — Elton Freeman, 71, of Oklahoma City died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in Oklahoma City. He was born Nov. 26, 1932, in Summerfield, Okla. He was retired from sales for Otasco Stores and a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 145.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Sunday at Evans and Miller Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Poteau with burial at Oakland cemetery in Poteau.
He is survived by his wife, Liz; a daughter, Cindy Freeman; a son, Rick Freeman; five sisters, Rose Bellany of Arizona, Lorene Owens of Oregon, Wyoma Heflin of Clayton, Okla., Zona Hopkins of Stockton, Mo., and Marcell Johnson of Oklahoma; four brothers, Merrion Freeman of Arkansas, Roosevelt Freeman of Arizona, and Delton and Jimmy Freeman, both of California; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Ricky, Kevin and David Freeman and Dustin Collins.
Lois Moore
CHICAGO — Lois G. Moore, 99, of Chicago, formerly of Heavener, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Chicago. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Heavener and wrote the church history of First Baptist Church. She was a lifetime member of Eastern Star and the widow of Henry Moore.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Heavener with burial at Memorial Park in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
Herman Lee Stubblefield
Herman Lee Stubblefield, 81, of Charleston died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born Nov. 13, 1922, in the Union community in Sebastian County to Lonnie Lee Stubblefield and Nancy Evergreen Jones. He was a member of Mt. View Free Will Baptist Church; a 50-year life member of Charleston Lodge No. 155; past master of Charleston Lodge; past high priest R.A.M. 32nd degree life member of Western Arkansas Scottish Rite; retired from Dixie Cup, a farmer and a World War II Army Corp veteran.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Mt. Free Will Baptist Church north of Charleston with burial and Masonic service at Mt. Hope cemetery north of Charleston under the direction of Smith Mortuary Inc. of Charleston.
He is survived by his wife, Ima Stubblefield of the home; one daughter, Myrlene Stubblefield of the home; four sons, Jimmy Stubblefield of Baytown, Texas, Alton Stubblefield of Charleston, Terry Stubblefield of Charleston and Alan Stubblefield of Charleston; a sister, Willie “Bill” Robertson of Charleston; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Troy May, Cary Stubblefield, Dennis Stubblefield, Harold Thompson, Leo Robertson and Shane Storey.

Elbert E. Winner, 51, of Van Buren died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, in Gainsville, Fla. He was a self-employed truck driver.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Jan. 12, 2004, at Gill cemetery in Van Buren under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of the home; two daughters, Michelle Winner Williams of Van Buren and Amanda Winner of Quincy, Ill.; a son, George Garvin of Tulsa; a sister, Luetta Schwartz of Pittsfield, Ill.; an uncle, Jesse Winner of Van Buren; and five grandchildren.
Opal Banhart
Opal Banhart, 83, of Ozark died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, in Ozark. She was born Aug. 27, 1920, in Webb City to Tommy Langston and Vera Stephens Bearden. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Mulberry. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon Kay Edgin.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Shaffer Funeral Home Mulberry Chapel officiated by the Rev. Ted Darling with burial at Highland cemetery in Ozark under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Mulberry.
She is survived by her husband, Iphis Banhart of Ozark; special friend, Marilyn Hawkins of Mulberry; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and JoEllen Banhart of Van Buren; son-in-law David Edgin of Ozark; a brother, W.W. “Jinx” Bearden of Fort Smith; five grandchildren, Sonya Wickens of Ozark, Brenda Warren of Ozark, Tiffany Harris of Ozark, Jessica Banhart of Van Buren and Ryan Banhart of Van Buren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Steve Wickens, John Warren, Todd Harris, Ryan Banhart and David Edgin.

Darla Sue Capetillo
Darla Sue Capetillo, 45, of Fort Smith left our lives on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004. She was born to Darla Sue Ross on May 23, 1958. She lived as a wonderful mother and homemaker.
Graveside services will be held today at 3 p.m. at the New Hope cemetery in Spiro under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She was survived by her husband, Jesse; twin daughters, Mandy and Melissa Batt of Fort Smith; one son, Shawn Batt of Arkoma; her mother, Sandra Swaim of Natural Dam; four brothers, Robert Ross of Arkoma, Frank Ross of Waldron, Rodger Ross of Fort Smith and James Pendleton of Van Buren; one sister, Maelena Glass of Virginia; three grandchildren, Paisley, Skylar and Nakiyah, all of Fort Smith; and many other friends and family who loved and cherished her time here on earth.
The family will receive visitors at 1610 S. M St. in Fort Smith following the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in her memory to the family to help with expenses.
Fred Dombek
Fred Dombek, 70, of Paris died Jan. 8, 2004, in Paris. He was a veteran and served in the Air Force for 12 years. He was a retired engineer and attended First Baptist Church in Paris. His other interests included golf, photography, hunting, fishing and wood carving. He was a stained glass artist. He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Dombek; and a brother, Jim Stanley Dombek.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. today at the Roller Chapel-Paris with burial at Oakwood cemetery in Paris under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Lillian “Sherley” and Chester Stephenson of Paris; a sister, Paula Lee Carollo of Bentonville; three brothers, Bobby Joe Dombek of Bixley, Okla., George David Dombek of Goshen and Donald Gene Dombek of Fayetteville; three nephews, Eric Dombek of Conway, Frank Dombek of Greenbrier and Dr. Clint Hutchison of St. Louis; and two nieces, Darla Hutchinson Phillips of Clarksville and Marsha Dombek Kuykendall of Bixby, Okla.
Leroy Ford
Leroy Ford, 48, of Booneville died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, in Booneville. He was a resident of the Booneville Human Development Center in Booneville.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Roberts Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Booneville with burial at Oak Hill cemetery in Booneville.
He is survived by his mother, Annie Mae Washington of Earle; three sisters, Louise Scott of Detroit, Erdell Jones of Indianapolis and Leneay Washington of Earle; two brothers, Benny Foster of Memphis and Charles Washington of Indianapolis; and many other friends and relatives.

Olin Edward Smith
Olin Edward Smith, 88, of Van Buren left our lives on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004. He was born on Sept. 11, 1915, to Calvin and Della Jordan Smith in Mountainburg. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Catherine Patricia Johnson Smith, and his brother-in-law, M.M. “Pete” Tankersley. He served in the Navy during World War II and graduated from the University of Arkansas. He was the owner of Olin Smith Grocery from 1950 until 1980, when he retired. He loved to go camping, fishing and hunting.
Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren, officiated by the Rev. Chester Smith, with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
He is survived by one daughter, Pam Smith of the home; two sons, David Smith of Van Buren and “Smitty” Smith and wife Joyce of Kibler; a sister, Irene Tankersly of Van Buren; eight grandchildren, Brandi Smith and husband Coby and Jake and Justin Smith, all of Van Buren, Kim Madsen and her husband Tyler of Fort Smith, Melissa Fowler and her husband Shawn of Kibler and Sandy, Lindsay and Katherine Smith, all of Tampa, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren and Paige Smith of Van Buren and Logan Fowler of Kibler.

Evelyn M. Britt
Evelyn M. Britt, 87, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a retired realtor for Britt Realty and retired manager of Gaslight Gifts in Central Mall. She was a member of Goddard United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Mires Britt Sr., and a son, Carl Mires Britt II.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with graveside service 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elmwood cemetery in Morrilton.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Ludington and her husband Samuel R. Ludington Jr. of Fort Smith and Jo Claire Emerson and her husband Jim Emerson of La Mesa, Calif.; two sisters, Lola M. Hays of Hot Springs and Cathryn Harrison of Springdale; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Ryan M. Keener
Ryan M. Keener, 31, of Fort Smith was called to be with the Lord on Jan. 9, 2004. He was born to Vickie Lynn Keener on March 9, 1972. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church, a graduate student at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith and interned as a football coach for the Greenland Public School System.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Ocker- Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Oak cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his parents, Bill and Vickie Cowan of Fort Smith; maternal grandfather, Vernon Keener of Fort Smith; a sister, Ashlee Cowan of Fort Smith; and a stepbrother, Tom Cowan of Fort Smith; an uncle and aunt, Mike and Joan Keener of Fort Smith; and two cousins, Audrey Keener of Fort Smith and Brandon and wife Elizabeth Keener of West Hollywood, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Lucille Keener of Fort Smith; and a stepsister, Sarah Cowan of Fort Smith.
Ryan will be greatly missed by his family, many friends and his four dogs.

Katherine Henderson “Katie” Smithson
Katherine Henderson “Katie” Smithson, 67, a member of an early Fort Smith family, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004. Katie was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Dorothy Little Henderson.
Katie was a 1958 graduate of Randolph-Macon Women’s College of Lynchburg, Va., where she received her B.A. in English. She received her master’s degree in special education from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, a lifelong Episcopalian and a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild. She was a member of the Junior League of Fort Smith and served on the board of Habitat for Humanity, where she volunteered. Katie was known for her intellect and her love of books as well as her keen wit. She was a special education teacher at Northside High School for 20 years. Her love of her family and her students was evident to her many friends.
She is survived by two sons, Lt. Col. Gray and wife Michelle Smithson of Atlanta and Lt. Col. Lee Smithson and wife Betty of Jackson, Miss.; two daughters, Polly Smithson and her partner Max Cloninger of Fort Smith and Betsy and her husband Brian Robinson of Fort Smith; two sisters, Dotty Peters of Fort Smith and Linnah Schoen of Minneapolis; and six grandchildren, Natalie, Andrea, Ann, Jack, William and Wyatt.
Memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church with entombment at St. John’s Columbarium under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
The family will greet friends in the Parish Hall following the service.

Dorothy M. Griffith
Dorothy M. Griffith, 88, of Fort Smith departed this earth to be with her Lord on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a member of and former Sunday school teacher for Rye Hill Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Herman R. Griffith, and a daughter, Mary Kay.
A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, John Hugh and LaVeda Griffith and Norman and Miria Griffith, all of Fort Smith. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Retha Kernan, Darren Griffith, Norma Krahe, Gregory Griffith, Heather Sartin, Melinda Robertson and Thomas Griffith, and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rye Hill Baptist Church with interment at Oak cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood. Visitation for Mrs. Griffith will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Boudie, J.T., Sam G., Carl, Sam M. and James Griffith.
William “Junior” Morse
William “Junior” Morse, 78, parted from this life after a long battle with cancer on Jan. 10, 2004, in his home with his family present. Mr. Morse was born on May 4, 1925, in Mulberry to William and Lydia Morse. He was a retired carpenter and cabinetmaker.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel in Van Buren with burial at New cemetery in Mulberry under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean Morse; one daughter, Patty Patterson of Van Buren; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Suzanne Morse of LaPorte, Texas; a son, Earl Morse of the home; three sisters, Jean Ryggs of Moorehead City, N.C., Sue Parrott of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Ruth Edens of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; five grandchildren, April Peacock and Amanda McKinley, both of LaPorte, Ronnie Morse of Houston and Misty Powell and Cody Patterson, both of Van Buren; and five great-grandchildren, Jake and Justin Peacock, Jared Morse and Cheyenne and Alex Powell.
