Evelyn M. Weir, 88, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in a local hospital. She was born March 4, 1915, in Manitoba, Can., and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Church of the Nazarene with burial at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith. She is survived by her husband, Harry; a daughter, Diane Gomez of Baldwin Park, Calif.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

TULSA — Michael Hosea Austin, 59, of Tulsa died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in Tulsa. He was a 1962 graduate of LeFlore High School, attended Northeastern State University and was a retired firefighter with the Tulsa Fire Department with 30 years of service. He was a member of International Order of Firefighters, Tulsa Local Firefighters Union No. 176, the Summerfield Baptist Church, the National Rifle Association and the Oil Capital Rod & Gun Club.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Heavener with burial at Memorial Park in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela.

CAMERON — Ashlee Dawn Logan, infant daughter of Michael and Tracy Logan of Cameron, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in Poteau.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Greenhill cemetery in Cameron under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home of Poteau.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Michelle White of Cameron; a brother, Kaelin Jarvis of Rock Island; maternal grandparents, Steve and Kay Ward of Rock Island; and maternal great-grandmothers, Earlene Blair of Spiro and Bessie Ward of Pocola.
Sondra Wood
NUNLEY — Sondra Rae Doucet Wood, 55, of Nunley died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in her home. She was born May 7, 1948, in Fayetteville. She graduated for Joplin High School in 1966 and earned a bachelor’s degree in education history from Missouri Southern University in Joplin in 1971 and a master’s degree (natural and applied science) from Oklahoma State University in 1991. She held a lifetime teaching certificate from the state of Missouri, was oil landman in Oklahoma from 1987 to 1994, was employed in the State Aviation Office for the Oklahoma 
military Department from 1994 to 1998, was Department of the Army Civilian in Washington, D.C., worked as the executive secretary to the chief trial attorney for the Army and received several outstanding achievement awards from the Army in Oklahoma and Washington, D.C. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mena where she taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible school and sang in the choir and was past president of the United Methodist Women, founding member and officer for Polk County Family Mission program, charter member of Polk County Master Gardeners and life member of Polk County Genealogical Society where she served as membership secretary and library chairman.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Mena with burial at Old Dallas cemetery under the direction of Hall Funeral Service of Mena.
She is survived by her husband, Billy; a stepdaughter, Angela Wood of Dallas; a stepson, Maj. Yancy Wood of Fort Belvoir, Va.; her mother, Thelma Doucet of Webb City, Mo.; a sister, Paula Phillips of Sallisaw; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Henry Blair, George Humphries, George Rowe, Jimmy Smith, John Puckett and John Talley.
Memorial contributions may be made to Polk County Family Mission.
Tara Johnson
SALLISAW — Tara Mechelle Johnson, 15, of Sallisaw died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, in Sallisaw. She was born Aug. 21, 1987, in Fort Smith. She was a student at Sallisaw High School and a Protestant.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Agent Funeral Home Chapel in Sallisaw with burial at Akins cemetery in Sallisaw.
She is survived by her mother, Lisa Johnson of Sallisaw; her father, Jimmy Johnson of Sallisaw; two brothers, Cody and Jimmy Johnson, both of Sallisaw; her maternal grandmother, June Qualls of Sallisaw; paternal grandparents, Amos and Patricia Johnson of Sallisaw; maternal great-grandmother, Bonnie Craighead of Sallisaw; paternal great-grandmother, Helen Mount of Sallisaw.
Pallbearers will be David, Jessie, James and Darrel Johnson, Joey Gindhart and Merel Rowe.
The body may be viewed 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Millie Jane Mattox Remer
Millie Jane Mattox Remer slipped the bonds of this earth on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003. She was born in Burlington, Kan., to Jason and Lora Mattox on Dec. 7, 1904, the only girl among five siblings.
After several years in college, she taught all ages in the Otumwa, Kan., one-room school. Millie met Donald Remer at his brother Milton’s farm near Burlington, Kan. Married in 1927, they owned the only store at Sharp, Kan. Three children were born there to the union. The store burned during the ‘30s Depression and the family moved to Eldorado Springs, Mo., in 1935. Donald owned a Marshall’s Auto Supply store, served on the city council and both were active in the community. Millie was teacher and superintendent of the Christian Church.
The moved to Sedalla, Mo., in the late ‘50s. There Millie taught in a handicapped school for several years. Deciding to retire in Blue Ball, they bought four acres adjoining their son’s land. Don and Jack designed and helped build their two-story “log cabin.” Millie and Don became very active in the AARP Senior Citizens, Eastern Star and Masonic chapters. For several years she wrote a “memories” column for the local paper called “From These Hills”.
Her husband Donald passed over in August 1994. Millie spent her last years in Mitchell’s Nursing Home in Danville. She was preceded in death by her son, Jack Jason, grandson, Thomas Adam and great-granddaughter, Windy. Surviving her are daughters, Gretchen Demby of Olathe, Kan., Donna Jane Stewart of Kansas City, Mo., and daughter-in-law, Joan Remer; five grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She leaves a great gift of love, compassion and community service to all who would walk in her shoes. Beloved mother.
Visitation at Martin’s Funeral Home in Waldron will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Little Egypt Church in Blue Ball. Interment will be at Little Egypt cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to donor’s favorite charity.
Andrew Riley Sura
Andrew Riley Sura, 2 months, of Van Buren died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, in a local hospital.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with cremation to follow.
He is survived by his parents, Andrew and Michelle Sura of Van Buren; two sisters, Alexis Sura of the home and his twin sister, Jesse Sura of the home; his maternal grandparents, Bill and Mary Nunnery of Van Buren; paternal grandparents, Andrew and Jan Sura of California; and four great-grandparents.
The family will visit with friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Jeraldine M. Winner
Jeraldine M. Winner, 85, of Charleston died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, in Charleston. She was born Nov. 8, 1917, in Allentown, Pa., to Frederick E. Shaffer and Aida Cressman. She was a television pioneer, hosting “Jerry and Her Friends” in the early 1950s at KSFA in Fort Smith. She was worked for the Arkansas Basin Development Association in Tulsa and for the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce and was active in Republican politics in Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by a brother, A.R. Shaffer and two grandsons, Steven and Scott Oleksy.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston. The body will be cremated.
She is survived by two daughters, Laurie and husband, Ken Eaton of San Antonio and Heather Ann and husband, Brad Stinson of Anderson, Ind.; a sister, Leanna Carruth of Charleston; a sister-in-law, Maggie Shaffer of Charleston; four grandchildren, Brandon, Todd, Christopher and Craig; and eight great-grandchildren.

PARIS — Dana Ruth Kury, 85, of Paris died Thursday, July 31, 2003, in Paris. She was a homemaker and the widow of Steve Kury.
Private funeral services were held Saturday. Arrangements under the direction of Murry Funeral Home of Paris.
She is survived by a daughter, Dianna Henderson of Richardson, Texas; a son, Nick Kury of Central City; and two grandchildren.

WALDRON — Frances Oldaker Chronister, 88, of Waldron, formerly of Hunter, Okla., died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in Hunter, Okla. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Kirk cemetery in Cauthron under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Waldron.
She is survived by four daughters, Clara McCray of Hunter, Okla., Betty Jorgensen of Parlier, Calif., Joyce Carnelison of Greenwood and Mary Sparks of Waldron; three sons, Owen Chronister of Selma, Calif., Tommy and Charles Chronister, both of Waldron; two sisters, Mary Duncan of Cauthron and Pinky Scroggins of Parlier, Calif.; a brother, Clyde Olaker of Cauthron; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Ava Clawson
Ava Clawson, 91, of Van Buren died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, in a local hospital. She was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church, was retired from McDonald-Douglas Corp. in Huntington Beach, Calif., and the widow of Fern R. Clawson.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
She is survived by a daughter, Nan Lafern Smith of Van Buren; three grandchildren, Lee Smith and Janna Sue VanKirk, both of Van Buren and Lara Ann Brisson of Athol, Mass.; and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Lee Smith, Joe Wood, Sam VanKirk, Bob Greenwood, Buddy Williams and Joe Dyer.

Paul George Beshears
Paul George Beshears, 92, of Mansfield died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was a retired welder, having worked in a California shipyard, and served in World War II. He was a member of the California Longshoreman Union and a member of Mansfield Church of Christ. Mr. Beshears was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Edwards Beshears; his two sisters, Bernice Beshears and Eva Ballard; two brothers, Bruce and Gilbert Beshears; and his parents, George and Fannie Beshears.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Mansfield Church of Christ with burial at Bloodsworth cemetery near Elm Park under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Mansfield.
He is survived by a sister, Beatrice Canady of Fort Smith; several nieces and nephews.

Dion Thomas Johnson
Dion Thomas Johnson, 24, of Hot Springs died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Hot Springs. He was affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson, Kan., a member of the Honor Society, Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow, and Delta Tau Delta Fraternity at Kansas State University. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Bonnie Thomas; paternal great-grandparents, John A. and Claudie Marie Johnson; and paternal great-grandfather, Charlie Hardgraves.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26 at Roller Funeral Home Chapel in Paris with burial at Corley cemetery in Paris.
He is survived by his parents, Dennis and Deann Thomas Johnson of Hot Springs; one sister, Dustina Johnson of Hutchinson, Kan.; two brothers, Dray Johnson of Hutchinson, Kan., and Dane Johnson of Hot Springs; paternal grandparents, Raymond and Charlene Johnson of Paris; maternal grandfather, Frank Thomas of Oklahoma City; paternal great-grandmother, Virgie Hardgraves of Paris; a niece, Deana Johnson of Hutchinson, Kan.; a nephew, Dante Johnson of Hot Springs; two aunts, Pamela Howell of Edmond, Okla., and Deborah Hixson of Paris; one uncle, Kirby Howell of Edmond, Okla.

Russell Williams
Russell Williams, 58, of Van Buren entered into rest on Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in his home. He was born Feb. 13, 1945, in Chicago, the son of the late Henry and Gertrude Williams. Russell a licensed certified social worker on the faculty of the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Area Health Education Center in Fort Smith, he has a master of social work degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock; he received the lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the professional of social work at the annual meeting of the Arkansas chapter of the National Association of Social Work, he served on the faculty of the Area Health Education Center in Fort Smith. Mr. Williams also has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and a master’s degree in social work form the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, in addition to serving as a behavioral science faculty member at AHEC Fort Smith, Williams provided social services for Sebastian County, Arkansas Social and Rehabilitative Services, the Arkansas Office on Aging and Adult Services and Arkansas Development Disabilities Services. He also provided professional social work consultation for Brownwood Life Care Services in Fort Smith, a residential center for profoundly handicapped people, and directed the HOPE Coalition of Sebastian County. Mr. Williams was an Army veteran and of the Episcopalian faith. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Susan of the home; a daughter, Anna Elizabeth Williams of the home; a son, Matthew Russell Williams of the home; one brother, Wayne Williams of Muldrow. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith. She is survived by her husband, Dennis; two daughters, Virginia Lyssy of San Antonio and Ruth Ragan of Shady Point; four sons, Robert Haskins of Edmond, Okla., Ron Haskins of Alamo, Calif., Garry and Dexter Haskins, both of Poteau; 17 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

PANAMA — Carl William Sisco, 76, of Panama died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Panama. He was born Nov. 11, 1926, in Panama. He was a retired firefighter and from the Civil Service.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Shady Point cemetery under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by two sons, Carl and Bill Sisco, both of Panama; a sister, Elaine Anderson of Panama; a brother, Roy Sisco of Panama; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and the mother of his children, Doris Nunley.
