POTEAU — Ben B. Smedley, 94, of Poteau died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, in Poteau. He was born July 4, 1908, He was a machinist-motor rewinding and a member of First Baptist Church in Poteau.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Poteau with burial at Oakland cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; a son, James K. Smedley of Octavia; a sister, Ruth Brown; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Faye Kincy
ARVIN, Calif. — Faye Jean Kincy, of Arvin, 74, Calif. died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003. She was born March 11, 1928, in Mulberry. She was a homemaker and a member of Arvin Assembly of God, the women’s ministries and Ladies Auxiliary VFW No. 8809. She was the widow of Truman Kincy.
Graveside service was held Monday at South Kern cemetery District under the direction of Arvin Funeral Home of Arvin, Calif.
She is survived by two daughters, Deborah Riley of Lake Isabella and Lawanda Jones of Arvin, Calif.; a son, Kenneth Kincy of Bakersfield; a sister, Dolores Oxford of Council Hill, Okla.; two brothers, Hugh Hale of Lompoc, Calif. and John Hale of Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Betty Miller
CENTRAL CITY — Betty Jane Miller, 76, of Central City died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Central City. She was born April 14, 1926, in Fort Smith. She was a retired first-grade teacher, a member of Audubon Society, the Sierra Club and the NEA and was a Protestant.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston with burial at Parks cemetery in Charleston.
She is survived by her husband, Joe; three daughters, Carol Foley and Jane Garcia, both of Fort Smith, and Ruth Adams of Atlanta; four sons, David Flatte of Pea Ridge, John Flatte of Conway, Russell Flatte of Staunton, Va., and Warren Flatte of Fort Smith; three stepdaughters, Sandra Miller Hayes of Washington, D.C., Elizabeth Speer of Charleston and Lynn Bartholomew of Fredrecksburg, Va.; a stepson, A.E. “Tom” Milller of Charleston; a sister, Shirley Haggard of Fort Smith; 14 grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Max, Robert and Britt Ulrich, Roma Lee Brittain, Ken Lawson and Fred Garcia.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

CABOT — Bessie Bernice Rogers, 87, of Cabot, formerly of Oden, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, in Jacksonville. She was born Jan. 23, 1916, in Montgomery County. She was a homemaker, a member of Oden Batpist Church and the widow of Hoyt Rogers.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oden Baptist Church with burial at Pine Ridge cemetery under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Rogers of Visalia, Calif., and Larry Rogers of Cabot; a sister, Eunice Mote of Fresno, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Milre Crain
QUINTON, Okla. — Milre Crain, 87, of Quinton, Okla., died Sunday, March 2, 2003, in Quinton. She was the widow of Otto Crain.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Pentecostal Church in Quinton with burial at Quinton cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Stigler.
She is survived by a daughter, Lora Quinton of Quinton; two sons, William Crain of McLoud, Okla., and John Crain of Quinton; three half brothers, Leon Hamlin of Oklahoma City, Fred Hamlin of Arlington, Texas, and Raymond Hamlin of Fort Worth, Texas; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Willis, James and Paul Quinton, Lee Crain and Anthony and Calvin Franks.
The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Mallory Funeral Home Chapel in Quinton.
Rufus Binz
CHARLESTON — Rufus A. Binz, 88, of Charleston died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, in Booneville. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a retired carpenter for John McConnell Construction Co., an Army veteran of World War II and the widower of Angeline Marie Binz.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Charleston with burial at Sacred Heart cemetery in Charleston under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
He is survived by two daughters, Vera Lee Binz and Rufina Binz, both of Charleston; a son, Dennis Binz of Fort Smith; three sisters, Lucille Smith and Lorene Mantooth, both of Charleston, and Laverne Farrington of Champaign, Ill.; a brother, Lineus Binz of Beaumont, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Billy, Gary, Kenneth, Jared and Johnny Smith and Reed Haynes.

BENTONVILLE — Bishop “Junior” Elmore, 83, of Bentonville died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003. He was born in Jenny Lind.
Funeral will be today at Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Mansfield with burial at Huntington City cemetery under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Mansfield.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; three daughters, Shirley Sandlin of Bentonville, Lavetta Cope of Santee, Calif., and Brenda Spink of Centerton; two sons, Harry Elmore of Escondido, Calif., and Hugh Elmore of Plano, Texas; three sisters, Melverta Beneux of Del City, Okla., Melva Trout of Texarkana and Jean Carson of Wagoner, Okla.; two brothers, Kennith Elmore of Huntington and Doyle Elmore of Ashdown; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

MULDROW — Charlene McElyea Matlock, 71, of Muldrow died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, in Muldrow. She was a homemaker and a member of Freewill Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Agent Funeral Home Chapel in Muldrow with burial at Cottonwood cemetery southeast of Muldrow.
She is survived by a daughter, Christine Gushea of Fort Smith; a son, Anthony Matlock of Muldrow; two sisters, Helen Stump of Muldrow and Polly Taff of Fort Smith; a brother, Harold McElyea of Muldrow; a grandchild and a great-grandchild.

Glen Scantling
WALDRON — Glen D. Scantling, 72, of Waldron died Saturday, March 1, 2003, in a Waldron hospital. He was a retired logger and an Army veteran.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Freedom Church with burial at Freedom cemetery in the Freedom comunity under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Waldron.
He is survived by his wife, Della Faye Scantling; three daughters, Glynis Cook of Bixby, Okla., and Joy Ballard and Donna Scantling, both of Waldron; a son, Russell Scantling of Waldron; five sisters, Eva Lou Hattabaugh of the Freedom community, Della Smith of Booneville, Loretta Anzar and Dorothy Posey, both of Peoria, Ariz., and Delta Smith of Sugar Grove; three brothers, Holt Scantling of the Freedom community, Donald Scantling of Boise, Idaho, and Ronnie Scantling of Bentonville; and six grandchildren.
The body may be viewed from 2 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the funeral home.

GANS — Doris Marie Gross, 78, of Gans died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, in her home. She was a homemaker and a Protestant.
No services are planned. The body will be cremated under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
She is survived by her husband, Nelson Gross; a daughter, Partricia White; two sons, Jimmy Ingle of Bakersfield, Calif., and Sammy Ingle of Stigler; two sisters, Mary Core of Bakersfield and Edna Cotten of Filmore, Texas; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

MULBERRY — Jessica Lynn Carter, 12, of Mulberry died Saturday, March 1, 2003, in her home. She was a student at Ozark Junior High School, a cheerleader and a member of the Church of Christ of Mulberry.
Funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mulberry Church of Christ with burial at Rankin cemetery under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
She is survived by her parents, Bruce Carter of Mulberry and Teresa Davis of Alma; her grandfather, Louis Carter of Ozark; three sisters, Kathren Carter of Van Alma, Amy Wilson of Van Buren and Sonny Davis of Kansas; and a brother, Bruce Carter Jr. of the home.
The family will visit with friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary Ann “Nanny” Whittaker
Mary Ann “Nanny” Whittaker, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, 73, of Fort Smith passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was in retail sales at Sears, a dental assistant for Dr. T.W. Brown and a waitress at Three Petes. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She received the “Best Mom Award” every year. She was a strong supporter of the Downtown Sertoma Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Whittaker; mother and father, John and Antonia Paskovich; four sisters, and six brothers.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Williams and her husband, Mike of Fort Smith and Marlene Whittaker of Fort Smith; two sons, Robert Whittaker and his wife, Kelly of Lavaca and Rick Whittaker and his wife, Rebel of Greenwood; a sister, Frances Chilcoate of McConnellsburg, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Christy, Erik, Kevin, Haley, Taylor and Wade; and two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Jackson.

Oleta Bentley-Davis, 83, of Aurora, Colo., died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, in Aurora, Colo.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill cemetery in Booneville under the direction of Roberts Funeral Home of Booneville.
She is survived by a daughter, Rita Glasgow of Ozark; a sister, Bertie Foster of Booneville; two brothers, Thurl Ward of Greenwood and Seaman Ward of Bakersfield, Calif.; two grandchildren, Shannon and Chris Crawford of Aurora; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary Brandall Joyce
Mary Brandall Joyce, 89, of Fort Smith died in her home Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003. She was born in Fairfield, Iowa, on April 21, 1913, and later moved to Greenwood. She was a member of Goddard United Methodist Church for more than 50 years where she taught Sunday school and was granted a life membership in the Women’s Society of Christian Service. Mary was a devoted wife and mother and a cherished friend to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, J.C. Matlock.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Goddard United Methodist Church under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, L.A. Joyce; two daughters, Nancy Joyce Matlock of Edmond, Okla., and Linda Joyce Laughlin and son-in-law C. King Laughlin of Dallas; seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Her faithful nurse and friend Mrs. Woodie Yates is remembered fondly by all the Joyce family.

Henry Christopher Bennett, 23, of Roseville died Sunday, March 2, 2003, in Paris. He was a recent graduate of Arkansas Tech in Russellville, with a bachelor’s degree in history and political science. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Paris.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, J.C. and Gerry Barber; and his paternal grandfather, Henry Bennett.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Paris with burial at Carpenter cemetery in Roseville under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
He is survived by his father, Gaylon Bennett of Ozark; his mother, Ann Marie Barber of Paris; a sister, Clesha Reading of Ozark; a brother, Derek B. Cisne of Little Rock; and a paternal grandmother, Mel Bennett of Roseville.
