MENA — Emma Lee Short, 90, of Mena died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Mena. She was born Dec. 9, 1912, in Umpire. She was a homemaker and worked at Campbell’s Dairy. She was the widow of Curtis Short.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Davis cemetery in Umpire under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by son, Dewitt Short of Mena; a stepdaughter, Pauline Tipton of Umpire; a stepson, Curtis Short Jr. of Puyallup, Wash.; two sisters, Farris Sharp of Texarkana, Texas and Clarice Holland of Fort Smith; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Velmar Maier
OZARK — Velmar “Buck” Maier, 86, of Ozark, formerly of Fort Smith, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Ozark. He was born Jan. 22, 1916, in Charleston. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a retired welder for Martin Machine Shop and was a Baptist.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
He is survived by a daughter, Patsy Reagan of Ozark; a sister, Imogene Allen of Fort Smith; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Myrle Shelton
OKLAHOMA CITY — Myrle McLellan Shelton, 79, of Oklahoma City, formerly of Panama, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Oklahoma City. She was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Pawhuska, Okla. She was a graduate of Panama High School in 1941 and attended Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. at Oklahoma Veterans cemetery in Oklahoma City under the direction of Vonell Smith Funeral Home of Oklahoma City.
She is survived by her husband, Cecil; three sons, Don of Garland, Texas, Jim of Boston and Bill of Oklahoma City; a sister, Hazel King of Sallisaw; and five grandchildren.

Mildred Humphrey
Mildred Jean Humphrey, 79, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in a local hospital. She was a retired owner and operator of a residental nursing home in Ventura, Calif., a member of First Baptist Church in Barling and the Fountain of Youth Day Center in Fort Smith. She was the widow of William Humphrey.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith with burial at Oak cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Deaton and Beverly Parks, both of Fort Smith; two sons, Charles Wright of Alma and James Wright of Van Buren; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be John Deaton, Norman Parks, Paul and Jacob Humphrey, Michael Bell and Stephen Ralph.
The body may be viewed beginning at noon today at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

Elmer “Red” Smith, 78, of Fort Smith passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was the retired owner of Fort Smith Fork Lift, a member of Faith Baptist Church in Jenny Lind and the Jenny Lind Lodge No. 503 F&AM.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Baptist Church in Jenny Lind with interment and Masonic Rites at Lovelace cemetery in Witcherville under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood. Viewing will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Smith of the home; two daughters, Carole Gunn of Fort Smith and Karen Smith of Oklahoma City; five sons, Raymond Smith and his wife, Lori, of Liberty, Mo., Troy Smith and his wife, Becky, of Greenwood, Phillip Smith of Vesta, Bill Fithian and his wife, Traci, of Arlington, Texas and Tim Fithian of Bedford, Texas; four sisters, Dorothy Phillips of Howard Hill, Inis Taylor of Jenny Lind, Merle Kerr of Howard Hill and Margaret Cook of Bear Hollow; four brothers, Al Smith of Huntington, Dutch Smith of Greenwood, Jim Smith of Fort Smith and Marion Smith of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Carl Nichols, Owen, Darrell, Kenny and Barry Smith and Daniel Taylor.

Patricia Pat A. Rothwell
Patricia Pat A. Rothwell, 56, of Alma died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, in Alma. She attended Liberty Assembly of God. She retired as administrative secretary for Universal Packaging.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Fentress Mortuary Chapel in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Vicki Rothwell of Van Buren; two sons, Jerry Rothwell of Alma and Jesse and his wife, Marsha Rothwell of Muldrow; a sister, Elizabeth Duquette of Van Buren; three grandchildren, Kendra and Darian Rothwell and Kasey Copeland; and a close friend, Terry Neissl and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to Donald W. Reynolds Cancer Support House, 3324 South M St., Fort Smith, AR 72903.

Noah Cooper
EUFAULA, Okla. — Noah “Slats” Eugene Cooper, 86, of Eufaula, Okla., died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003. He was born April 16, 1916, in Gilmore, Okla. He was a coal miner retired from Lone Star Steel Company, a member of AFL-CIO Coal Miner’s Union and was of the Baptist faith. He was the widower of Betty Lou Selsor and Goldie McClary.
Graveside service was held Wednesday at Vaughn cemetery in Gilmore, Okla., under the direction of Gregg Funeral home of Eufaula.
He is survived by three daughters, Shirley Jean Winkle of Stigler, Judith Ann Sweeden of Kinta and Frances Arlene Nelson of Eufaula; a son, Willard Eddie of McCurtain, Okla.; two sisters, Marilyn Sue Snow and Leslie Inez Lusk, both of Wagoner, Okla.; two brothers, Bob Wallace Cooper of Poteau and George Earl Cooper of Yuma, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Brian Mitchell, Chris Ames, Aaron and Eddie Cooper Jr., Shawn Sweeden and Marvin Short.

Marjorie Pringle
MENA — Marjorie J. Pringle, 69, of Mena died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was born Jan. 25, 1933, in Bakersfield, Calif. She was a retail clerk in Thrifty Drug Store in California, a telephone operator for Pacific Bell in California, a member of Retail Clerks Union and the Garden Club.
Graveside services were held Wednesday at Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by two daughters, Debra Fatheree of Eagleton and Katherine Pringle Gardner of Mena; two sons, John S. and Ervin G. Pringle, both of Mena; a sister, Leah Stuart of San Francisco; two brothers, Raymond Currier of San Francisco and Jim Currier of Maui, Hawaii; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a friend, Hal McNeely of Rocky.

Gwendolyn Lynch
MENA — Gwendolyn Ruby Lynch, 82, of Mena, formerly of Aubrey, Texas, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Mena. She was born Feb. 6, 1920, in Tulsa. She was a homemaker, a past matron of the Eastern Star in Pilot Point Lodge Chapter No. 1025 and the widow of Alvin Ray Lynch.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Belew cemetery in Pilot Point, Texas, under the direction of Huff Slay Funeral Home. Local arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Service of Mena.
She is survived by a son, William Lynch of Mena; a sister, Mary Gilbert of Mena; a brother, Adrian Carter of Mena; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Justin Schmitz
LANCASTER, Calif. — Justin Schmitz, 69, of Lancaster, Calif. died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in his home. He was born May 28, 1933, in Scranton. He grew up in Paris and attended school at Subiaco. He served in the Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War and a retired aerospace engineer.
His ashes will be interred at St. Joseph cemetery in Paris. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Valley Mortuary of Palmdale, Calif.
He is survived by a daughter, Tresa Schmitz of Lancaster, Calif.; two sons, Paul Schmitz of Chester, Md., and Matt Schmitz of Lancaster, Calif.; three sisters, seven brothers and two grandchildren.

Eric Forshee
POTEAU — Eric Anthony Forshee, 33, of Poteau died Tuesday, Jan, 21, 2003, in Fort Smith. He was born June 11, 1969, in Clewiston, Fla. He was employed at Tyson Foods.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Gospel Tabernacle in Poteau with burial at Oakland cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by his mother, Teresa Sullivan of Eustis, Fla., his father, James Earl Forshee of Fort Smith two sisters, Lori Purser of Fort Smith and Renee Gulledge of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, James Earl Forshee of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a fiancee, Kim Gentry of Poteau.
Pallbearers will be Charles Hayes, Pat Swearington, Jerry Collins, Carl Daniels, David Dennis and Keith Morris.

Dane Jeffcoat
CENTRAL CITY — Dane Wesley Jeffcoat, 38, of Central City died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Central City. He was born June 25, 1964, in Ozark. He was employed by Kuper Construction in Charleston and a member of Central Free Will Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Central Free Will Baptist Church with burial at Oak Valley cemetery south of Lavaca under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
He is survived by his wife, Jenny; a daughter, Dana Marie Jeffcoat of the home; a son, Channing Wesley Jeffcoat of the home; his parents, Howard and Virginia Jeffcoat of Central City; a sister, Vickie Najem of Central City; two brothers, Ricky Jeffcoat of Pea Ridge and Mark Jeffcoat of Lavaca; and his grandmother, Agatha Jeffcoat of Lavaca.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Raines, Tommy “Pete” McGuire, David Acord, Ryan, Brandon and Michael Jeffcoat.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Henry Turnbow
MENA — Henry L. Turnbow, 84, of Mena died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Mena. He was born Aug. 20, 1918, in Ardmore, Okla. He was an Army veteran serving in World War II, worked for Bell Helicopter as a quality assurance representative and a member of Board Camp Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Board Camp Baptist Church with burial at Liberty cemetery under the direction of Hall Funeral Service of Mena.
He is survived by his wife, Lavana; a daughter, Judi Bennett of Hurst, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Board Camp Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mildred Schultz
STOCKTON, Calif. — Mildred “Babe” Fowler Schultz, 83, of Stockton, Calif., died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003. She was born March 14, 1919. She worked at the California State Hospital in Modesto, Calif., and the California State Hospital in Stockton, Calif. where she worked as psychiatric technician. She was the widow of Harold Fowler Sr. and Walter Schultz.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Chapel of Millsap Funeral Service in Fort Gibson, Okla., with burial at Fort Gibson National cemetery.
She is survived by a son, Harold “Bruce” Fowler of Danville, Calif.; two sisters, Hazel “Sis” Whitlock of Ceres, Calif., and Ruby Broom of Bokoshe; three brothers, Jack Hamilton of Bokoshe, Junior Hamilton of Fort Smith and Duke Hamilton of Spiro; and one grandchild.

Michael Loney
MULBERRY — Michael Lee Loney, 53, of Mulberry died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, in his home. He was born Aug. 15, 1949, in Flint, Mich. He was a graduate of Michigan State University, a Navy veteran, an electronic technician and a member of Eagles.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Ozark; three daughters, Isrea Loney of Muskegon, Mich., Jennifer Bolf of Flushing, Mich., and Jackie Waits of Springdale; two sons, Michael Loney II of Murrieta, Calif., and Jeremiah Loney of Mulberry; four sisters, Shirley Nichols of Birch Run, Mich., Patricia Loney of Reese, Mich., Susan Loney of Flint, Mich., and Catheryn Szrainskia of Indian River, Mich.; and 10 grandchildren.

Raymond Frost
GREENWOOD — Raymond Frost, 68, of Greenwood died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, in Fort Smith. He was an Army veteran of Vietname War and retired from St. Edwards Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Branch Assembly of God with burial at Baxley cemetery in Paris under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
He is survived by his wife, Anna; two daughters, Rhonda Anderson of Greenwood and Darla Ascencio of Mesa, Ariz.; a son, Johnny Frost of Texas; two stepdaughters, Gail Graham of Mansfield and Bobbi Ann Gann of Hackett; two stepsons, Raymond Tankersley of Pocola and Elmer Tankersley of Cameron; two sisters, Reba Buck of Muldrow and Sue Brown of Paris; three brothers, Garland Frost of Roland, Doyle Frost of Charleston and Darvin Frost of Branch; eight grandchildren, 14 stepgrandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Raymond, Elmer and Cliff Tankersley, James, Frost, Jim O’Hern and David Cheoter.
The body may be viewed 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Laura Keaton
Laura Bell Keaton, 79, of Fort Smith died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, in a local hospital. She was a member of Saint James Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a church mother, the Women’s Missionary Society and the CRC Club.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Saint James Missionary Baptist Church with burial at Oak cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a son, David Keaton of Fort Smith; a sister, Malene Reeves of Dewitt; a brother, Will Reeves of Chicago; a stepsister, Betti Jo Fitzpatrick of Detroit; and a stepbrother, Robert Gamble of Tulsa.
Pallbearers will be Sam Smith, Kevin Moore, Edward James, Anthony Sauls, Rodney Corbin and Alfred Robinson.
