Sue Carolyn Laister Smith
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Sue Carolyn Laister Smith at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at age 66. She will be dearly missed and always remembered. Sue was a lifelong resident of Fort Smith and a graduate of Fort Smith High School Class of ’54. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Putnam and Louise Lasiter. She was an employee of Time Stripping of Van Buren.
To cherish her beautiful memory, she leaves her daughter, Marilyn Elaine Godwin Smith of Marietta, Ga., and her granddaughter, Ginger Renee Smith of Raleigh, N.C. She is also survived by her brother, James. P. Laister Jr. of Fort Smith, and a sister, Barbara Lasiter Fraser of Lavonia, Mich.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Edward Mercy Medical Center ICU Ward for all their love and support.
Memorial services were held Thursday at Fentress Mortuary, 1805 N. A St., Fort Smith, with the Rev. Tommy Wiley officiating.
It was Sue’s request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Sebastian County Humane Society, P.O. Box 10953, Fort Smith, AR 72917.
Roger Marshall England
Roger Marshall England, age 81, of Searcy died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, in a local nursing home. He was born Jan. 8, 1922, in Ratcliff to Marshall Monroe England and Jessie Early England.
Mr. England is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruby Stiles England; three sons, James Roger England of Slidell, La., Lester Eugene England of Fort Worth, Texas, and Ralph Marshall England of Russellville; a sister, Wanda Fite of Searcy; six grandchildren, Drew England of Baton Rouge, La., Carrie McFarland of Dallas, Casey England of Golden, Colo., Matthew England of Ruston, La., Allison England of Baton Rouge, La., and David England of Houston; two great-grandchildren, Connor England of Ruston, La., and Max McFarland of Dallas; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Alma Satterfield.
Mr. England was a Navy veteran of World War II, a deacon at First Baptist Church, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite, Shrine, Grotto, VFW and DAV.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at Roller-Daniel Funeral Home Chapel in Searcy with burial at White County Memorial Gardens.

Rodney Joe Sallee
Rodney Joe Sallee, 45, of Sapulpa, Okla., died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, in a Sapulpa hospital. He served in the Navy and had been a florist with Southwood Florist in Tulsa for 26 years.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
He is survived by his parents, Marlin and Yvonne Sallee of Fort Smith; a sister, Debbie Jones of Van Buren; three brothers, Marlin Sallee II and Victor Sallee, both of Fort Smith, and Eric Sallee of Van Buren; and a lifelong friend and partner, LeRoy Wasson of Sapulpa, Okla.
Pallbearers will be Mickey Bynum, Pat Walton, Joseph Watts, Greg Keith and Matthew Sallee.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Sallee, Billy Rhynes, Paul Bollinger and Jim Rogers.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial service will also be held at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Floral Haven Chapel in Tulsa.
Mattie V. Logan
Mattie V. Logan, age 75, of Fort Smith passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was born Oct. 7, 1927, in Mansfield and worked 38 years for Southwestern Bell Telephone in management. Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, George Logan.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Grand Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Stark officiating under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Mansfield. Serving as pallbearers will be Larry Mitchell, Jimmy Vaughn, James Goddard, James D. Sparks, Henry Oliver and Leroy Fry. Honorary pallbearers will Grand Avenue Baptist Church Love and Action Sunday school class. Interment will follow at Woodlawn cemetery.
Mattie is survived by two sons, Ronald Logan and Charles Logan, both of Fort Smith; a daughter-in-law, Pattie Logan; and two grandchildren, Danny and Mary Logan.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home in Mansfield. The family will visit with friends after the interment service at 4001 Spring Mountain Drive.
Memorial contributions may be made to Donrey Cancer Support House or Grand Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund.
Deborah L. Ellington
Deborah L. Ellington, 50, of Van Buren died Thursday, Feb. 13,2003, in a local hospital. She was a member of Rena Road Christian Church and was preceded in death by her father, James Bass.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Rena Road Christian Church with burial at Gill cemetery in Van Buren under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by her mother, Gwen Bass of Van Buren; two sisters, Paula Ellington of Van Buren and Karen and husband, John Richards of Van Buren; a brother, Jimmy and wife, Wanda Bass of Fort Smith; seven aunts, Lena Turner and Wilma Campbell, both of Van Buren, Lavonna Anderson of Fort Smith, Carolyn Hougland of Little Rock, B.J. Bake of Montana, Mary Henderson of Barling and JoAnn Roberts of Spring Valley, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Turner, J.R. and John Smith, Herby Anderson, Burl Harlow and Brian Summerhill.
Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews, Jimmy, Gerry and Joey Bass and Eric Richards.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Francis Marie Wilson Longley
Mrs. Francis Marie Wilson Longley, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, after a brief illness after reaching her 85th birthday on Feb. 6, 2003. She was born to Verda Price Wilson and Clarence Harold Wilson Sr. on Feb. 6, 1918, in Fort Smith.
Mrs. Longley graduated from Xavier University in 1940, where in her freshman year, she was awarded a gold medal personally by the famous black educator, Mary McLeod Bethune, for having earned the highest grade point average in the entire university and where in her senior year, she was voted most beautiful girl on campus. After graduation, she taught for a while in Cottonplant and then was offered a position teaching at Xavier, but declined the offer because she had settled down to raise a family.
She was married
to a highly regarded police officer in Fort Smith, Leland Andrew Longley Sr., but was widowed during the 17th year of marriage after 11 of their 12 children were born and a month before the youngest was born. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Lucretia C. Smith, and a brother, Clarence Harold Wilson Jr., both of Fort Smith; daughters, Frances Sylvia and Grace Bernadette, both of the home, Veronica Gaddis of Florida, Ruth Cecilia Jordan of Fort Smith, Teresa Williams of Louisiana, Mary Louise Longley of Massachusetts and Christine Gatewood of Little Rock; sons, Thomas Hubert Longley of Colorado, Joseph Dominic Longley of Fort Smith, Mark Longley of Iowa and Michael E. Longley of Georgia; 24 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by a son, Leland Jr.
She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church before it was closed and a communicant of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Smith.
Major Margaret Wynn
Major Margaret Wynn, 79, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in a local hospital. She retired in November 1988 as a major in the Salvation Army after 44 1/2 years of service. She was a solider in the Salvation Army.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at the Salvation Army Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Maj. James Wynn of the home; a daughter, Margaret Whitehead of Marietta, Ga.; three sons, Michael Wynn of Oklahoma City, John and Richard Wynn, both of Sapulpa, Okla.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Michael, John, Rich and Bradley Wynn, Howard Whitehead and Daniel White.

Amy Ruth Inman
Amy Ruth Inman, 58, of Scranton died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Scranton. She was a homemaker, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church at Crossroads. She was preceded in death by her father, Vernon Charles Cravens, and a sister, Nell Cravens.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Paris with burial at Ellsworth cemetery in Subiaco under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
She is survived by her husband, Bud Inman of Scranton; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Ronnie Pack of Atkins; a son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Teresa Inman of Scranton; her mother, Eula Mae Cravens of Scranton; two sisters, Nenah Jean Fulmer and Susan Houser, both of Scranton; and four grandchildren, Garrett and Victoria Pack, Toby and Joni Inman.
Pallbearers will be Mark and Charles Fulmer, Ron Lee, T.J. Brown, Jerry Stephens and Danny Porter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Louie Fox, Troy Houser, Danny Greenshaw and Wayne Gray.

Howell B. Davis
Howell B. Davis, 91, of Scranton died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Paris. He was born Oct. 31, 1911, in Scranton. He was a retired factory worker, a coal miner and a member of Scranton Holiness Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Scranton Holiness Church with burial at McKendree cemetery north of Subiaco under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Hughes of Scranton; a son, Jerry Davis of Scranton; a sister, Sylvia Cress of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a brother, Glen Davis of Glenpool, Okla.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be John and Gene Davis, Billy Birchfield, Kenneth Parsley, Dustin and Shane Hughes.
The family will visit with friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Retha “Cozette” Avlos
Retha “Cozette” Avlos, 84, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, in a local Fort Smith nursing home. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a devoted homemaker and business proprietor. She was also past president of Fort Smith Garden Society and Flower Show judge. She was preceded in death by her husband, William T. “Bill” Avlos; and a son, Dennis Avlos.
Mass will be 10 a.m. today at St. Boniface Catholic Church with burial at Holy Cross cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by three children, a daughter, Celeste Corbin of Bloomer; two sons, Douglas Avlos of Birmingham, Ala., and Greg Avlos of Fort Smith. She is also survived by a nephew, William Matthews of Ravel, La.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Michael Taylor, Brett, Rueben, Jason, Matthew and Greg Avlos.

James D. Shettleworth
James D. Shettleworth, 74, of Dyer died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in a local hospital. He was born March 24, 1928, in Stigler. He was a retired employee of Riverside Furniture Co. and of the Pentecostal faith.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Dyer City cemetery Arbor under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
He is survived by his wife, Dories Shettleworth of the home; two sons, Benny Wayne Shettleworth of Alma and Randy Jay Shettleworth of Dyer; a sister, Macklean Gates of Bartlesville, Okla.; two brothers, Roy Shettleworth of Spiro and Kenneth Shettleworth of Altus; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Don Odom
SPIRO — Don Odom, 76, of Spiro died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, in Spiro. He was a retired Spiro firefighter and a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of First United Methodist Church, VFW, American Legion and Spiro Chamber of Commerce.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church with burial at Spiro City cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Spiro.
He is survived by his wife, Bettie; two sons, Donnie and David Odom, both of Spiro; two brothers, Jack and Lawrence Odom, both of Heavener; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Neil Perrin, Jim West, Robert Roland, Wendell Mills, Mark Cox, Robert Sheffield, Jerry Smith and Jim Whitehead.

SPIRO — Elizabeth English Cloud, 31, of Spiro died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was attending nursing school to be an RN, earned a degree in Health Information Management from East Central University, and was a 1989 graduate of Spiro High School and a member of the Chi Omega sorority.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Spiro First Assembly of God with burial at Spiro City cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Spiro.
She is survived by her husband, Wesley; two sons, Jalen and Kaeden Cloud, both of the home; her parents, Larry and Sheila Garrett of Spiro; a sister, Nicole Garrett of Tulsa; and her grandmother, Billie Crockett of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Rusty Walker, Tyrone Bunch, Chas and Loss Robbins, Clayton Edwards and Chris Parker.
