DETROIT — Vercie M. Griffin, 87, of Detroit, formerly of Fort Smith, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Detroit. She was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Coal Hill. She was a homemaker, a member of Zion Temple Methodist Church CME, VFW Auxiliary, ATS Club and AARP and an usher at CME at Mount Zion Methodist Church.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a son, Green W. Griffin of Booneville; and a sister, Blanche Bettis of Detroit.
There will be no public viewing.
Robert D. Freeman
Robert D. Freeman, 61, of Paris died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, in Paris. He was a self-employed carpenter and a Baptist. He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Freeman.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Roller Funeral Home Chapel in Paris.
He is survived by his wife, Paulette Cearley Freeman of Paris; a daughter, Constance Sue Walters of Humble, Texas; two sons, Jeffery P. Freeman of Atlanta and Terry L. Freeman of Conway; three sisters, Earliene Level of New Blaine, Mary E. Powell of Paris and Linda Langston of Russellville; two brothers, Eugene P. Freeman of Pine Bluff and Jerry W. Freeman of Paris; and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be David Rayburn, John, James and Ray Adamson, Bill Lewis and Wayne Funderburg.
Honorary pallbearer will be James “Jim” Bowman.
Payton Alexander Trotter
Payton Alexander Trotter, 11, of Greenwood died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, in his home in Greenwood. He was a sixth-grade student and former member of the student council at East Hills Middle School in Greenwood. He was involved in football, motocross and stock car racing, enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of Greenwood First Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Greewood First Baptist Church under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Beth and Gary Pettway of Greenwood; his father, Donald Trotter of Hackett; two sisters, Josie and Lakin of the home; two brothers, Cole and Chris of the home; his grandparents, Pete and Athena Pasley of Greenwood, Plymouth and Lorene Trotter of Hackett and Verna Pettway of Greenwood; and great-grandparents, Sybal Pasley of Pangburn and Bessie Frangos of Albuquerque, N.M.
Stateroom hours will 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Eric Carman, Joe Goodwin, Jimmy Cook, Bill Dillard, Brandon Cheek and Bobby Reno.

Bayles Earl Cobb III
Bayles Earl Cobb III, 87, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was born Dec. 21, 1914, in Amarillo, Texas, and graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1931. He attended the Virginia Military Institute and the University of Texas in Austi0n, where he graduated with a degree in business administration in 1935. He was an overseas agent for Lykes Brothers Steamship Line in China, Japan and the Philippines when he met Marguerite Elinor “Madge” Aaron in Manila, where they were married
at the outbreak of World War II. Following the fall of Manila, they were imprisoned for more than three years in the Japanese internment camp, Santo Tomas in Manila, before being liberated by U.S. Forces. After the war, he returned with his family to Arkansas, where he owned and operated Southwestern Coal Co., Crown Construction Co. and Cobb Properties and other concerns. Over the years, he served on the boards of directors of First National Bank, Sparks Memorial Hospital, the Rosalee Tilles Home and the Fort Smith Art Center. He also served as president of the Fort Smith Public Library and of Hardscrabble Country Club.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Episcopal Church with private burial at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Madge; four sons, Bayless E. Cobb IV of San Diego, Alexander B.T. Cobb of Los Angeles, James L.S. Cobb of Raleigh, N.C., and Matthew B. Cobb of Fort Smith; and eight grandchildren.

William Adair
BIG FORK — William Frank Adair, 88, of Big Fork died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, in his home. He was born May 13, 1914, in Graham, Texas. He was an electrical engineer, a 32nd degree Mason of Wichita Falls, Texas, a member of Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and an elder, member and chairman of the board of directors at First Christian Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church with burial at Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
He survived by his wife, Gela; a daughter, Pat Chamberlin of Big Fork; six sons, Burney Adair of Wichita Falls, Texas, William T. Adair of Fairfax, Va., Robin F. and Jimmy Adair, both of Big Fork, Ronnie Adair of Desoto, Texas, and Larry Adair of Houston; a sister, Yvonne Cates of Conroe, Texas; 26 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Roy Chamberlin, Burney, Tommy, Robin, Jimmy, Ronnie and Larry Adair.
The family will visit with friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Kenneth Rogers
HEAVENER — Kenneth Edwin Rogers, 79, of Heavener died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was a veteran of World War II, a retired brakeman from Kansas City Southern Railroad and a member of United Transportation Union and First Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church with burial at Memorial Park in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; a son, Lowell Rogers of Owasso, Okla.; a sister, Sue Edmunds of Heavener; a brother, Allan Rogers of Tulsa; and two grandchildren; and a friend, Hazel Evans.
Zela Arter
BOKOSHE — Zela Inez Arter, 89, of Bokoshe died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in Pocola. She was born May 13, 1913, in Blue Mountain. She was the owner and operator of Arter Grocery Store in Bokoshe, a member of Old Bokoshe Baptist Church, where she served as secretary-treasurer, and a member of Order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Old Bokoshe Baptist Church with burial at Old Bokoshe cemetery under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Pocola.
She is survived by a son, Elbert Arter of Pocola; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Martha Hankins
Martha Jane Thomas Hankins, 68, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in her home. She was a retired bank officer, serving banks in Warren and Camden for 36 years, served as president of Arkansas Chapter of the National Association of Bank Women, the South Arkansas Chapter of Bank Administration Institute, also held several positions in other professional organizations, an active member of Fianna Hills Baptist Church in Fort Smith.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Fianna Hills Baptist Church in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Janie Baber of Marion; a son, Hank Hankins of Fort Smith; two sisters, Mary Lou Cook of Pensacola, Fla., and Jan Gleason of Tallahassee, Fla; a brother, Larry Thomas of Houston; and six grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends in the church fellowship hall following the memorial service.

RUSSELLVILLE — Andrea Holloway, 17, of Russellville died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002. She was born July 6, 1985, in Dardanelle. She was a senior at Russellville High School, secretary for Young Democrats, in National Honor Society, French Honor Society, competed at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith Media Day and earned award for on site competition in news writing, competed at Arkansas Scholastic Press Association Convention, earned excellent award for Front Page Design and overall award for excellence for Red and Black Newspaper.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Humphrey Funeral Service Chapel in Russellville with burial at East Point cemetery in Russellville.
She is survived by her father and stepmother, Mark and Sheri Holloway of Russellville; her mother and stepfather, Ronna and Earl Barber of Fort Smith; three sisters, Sara Martin, Peyton and Emily Holloway, all of Russellville; paternal grandmother, Louise Holloway of Wheatley; maternal grandparents, Ed and Linda Harness of London; and stepgrandparents, Lyndal and Gerrie Henderson of Russellville, Norma and Dale Gibby of Russellville and L.D. and Mary Williams of Comanche, Okla.

OZARK — Edna Ross, 62, of Ozark died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, in her home. She was a homemaker, a member of Abundant Life Fellowship Church and Ladies Auxiliary in Altus, the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Altus, Ladies Auxiliary VFW in Coal Hill, the EHC Club, Ladies Auxiliary at Altus Nazarene Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with burial at Mount View cemetery in Ozark.
She is survived by her husband, Gerald; a daughter, Beth Rowlett of Ozark; four sons, Randy Ross of Iowa, La., Mike and David Ross, both of Altus, and Mark Ross of Ozark; a sister, Carol Cordell of Ozark; two brothers, Robert Doss of Lake Charles, La., and Harold Dean Doss of Ozark; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

WAGONER, Okla. — Violet Adair Dupont, 78, of Wagoner, Okla., died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in Wagoner, Okla. She was a homemaker, of the Pentecostal faith and the widow of Louis Adair.

OLE REMY COMMUNITY — Fairy Mildred Allen, 93, of Ole Remy community, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in Muldrow. She was born Dec. 14, 1908, in Dora. She was a homemaker, a Protestant and the widow of John Wesley Allen Jr.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Upper Camp Creek cemetery northwest of Roland under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Roland.
She is survived by five daughters, Regina Allen, Oza Vae McAnelly and Camilla Finney, all of Ole Remy community, Murilene Wireman of Beaumont, Calif., and Vonda Allen of Catoosa, Okla.; a son, Wayburn Allen of Ole Remy community; 26 grandchildren, 42, great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren.

SALLISAW — Sharon Osburn, 60, of Sallisaw died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in Sallisaw. She was born Aug. 23, 1942, in Muskogee, Okla. She was the former language arts and communications teacher for sixth, seventh and eighth grades, a former member of Sertoma Club, Oklahoma Education Association and National Education Association and was a Baptist.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Agent Funeral Home Chapel in Sallisaw with burial at Akins cemetery northeast of Sallisaw.
She is survived by a daughter, Jana Taylor of Sallisaw; a son, Mark Osburn of Sallisaw; her mother, Iris Evans of Sallisaw; three sisters, Kathy Edwards of Coweta, Okla., Barbara Prichard of Oklahoma City and Michelle Marcum of Tulsa; and three grandchildren.
