James H. Groves
James H. Groves, 79, of Fort Smith died Sunday, March 17, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was born in Poteau, on July 19, 1922. He is survived by his sister, Nell Tatum and brother, Claude Groves, both of Fort Smith. Following a committal service at 11 a.m. at Roselawn cemetery, a memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. in the First Christian Church, 3600 Free Ferry Road. Services are under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Jack Sallee, Keller and Bob Groves, Bill Moran, Pete Hatley and Randy Alexander.
James graduated from Fort Smith High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago.
He received an honorary discharge from the Army following service in the European Theater of War during World War II. During his tour of duty, James continued his musical studies in Hungary. In the late 1940s, he served on the faculty of Mills College in San Francisco and continued his studies under renowned pianist/composer, Igor Petrie. Following his stint at Mills College, James appeared in concert under the auspices of the U.S. State Department, performing in several European countries. He returned to Fort Smith where he served as director of music for First Christian Church. James formed the first handbell choir in the State of Arkansas and composed and arranged music of handbells. He returned to San Francisco in 1968 and served as music director in several churches, the last of which was Lakeside Presbyterian Church.
Upon retirement James returned to Fort Smith and again served as music director for First Christian Church. He was area chairman of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, Inc. in 1974 and honorary chairman for the Silver Anniversary Festival of American Handbell Ringers in 1979. Under Mr. Groves direction the Disciples Handbell Choir of First Christian Church gained national recognition.
For the past several years, James used his musical talents for “Project Compassion” in many local nursing homes and retirement center.

Owen Jones
MOUNTAINBURG — Owen Jones, 56, of Mountainburg died Sunday, March 17, 2002, in a local hospital. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a former employee of Action Rooter.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by a daughter, Edriss Tackett of Bokoshe; a sister, Barbara Nepple of Jacksonville; a brother, Tommy Jones of Fort Smith; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy and Ricky Cluck, Ralph Bogner, David Shepherd and Jackie McMaster.
Mattie Lohmeyer
LAMAR — Mattie Lemons Lohmeyer, 90, of Lamar died Monday, March 18, 2002, in Clarksville. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Chapel Pentecostal Church of God.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. today in Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville with burial at Lamar cemetery.
She is survived by three sons, Danny Evans and Clifton Newlan, both of California, and Jimmy Evans of Scranton; two brothers, Elva Lemons of Wisconsin and Leroy Lemons of Clarksville; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Campbell, James Childers, Charles, Bill and James Holt and Larry Don Riley.
Barbara Curry
Barbara E. Curry, 90, of Fort Smith died Thursday, March 14, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was a retired vocational rehab counselor for the State of Iowa and a member of the Church of the Pines.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13 in Church of the Pines in Van Buren. The body will be cremated under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Beth Cooper of Fort Smith; four grandchildren, Jon, Stephen, Peter and Christopher Cooper.

NORMAN, Okla. — Evelyn Hall, 68, of Norman, Okla. died Tuesday, March, 19, 2002, in Norman. She was born Oct. 28, 1933, in Clayton, Okla. She worked for the Daily O’Collegian in Stillwater for 17 years and worked for Decision Point Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Services in Rogers for four years.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday in Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel in Norman, Okla., with burial at 1:30 p.m. at Newalla Pilgrims Rest cemetery in Newalla, Okla.
She is survived by her husband, Wendel; two daughters, Raenina Fricks of Fort Smith and Zarina Ventris of Stillwater, Okla.; two stepdaughters, Janet Prather of Oklahoma City and Cindy Turner of Noble, Okla.; two stepsons, Clayton Hall of Oklahoma City and John Arlon Hall of Las Vegas; a sister, Francis Lick of Grawn, Mich.; one half sister, Linda O’Neal of Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

HEAVENER — Gerald Buster Runnels Sr., 76, of Heavener died Monday, March 18, 2002, in his home. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of First Assembly of God in Wister.

BARLING — Nguyen Thi Muon, 83, of Barling died Monday, March 18, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker and a member of Eastside Baptist Church of Fort Smith. She was the widow of Phan Van Theo.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday in Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by three daughters, Cao Phan and Hong Phan, both of Barling, and Nga Phan of Dallas; four sons, Hoa Phan of Houston, Loc Phan of Fort Smith, Tho Phan of Atlanta and Son Phan of Barling; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jordan Marie Hayes, 23 months, of Fort Smith died Thursday, March 14, 2002, in a local hospital. She was born April 5, 2000, in Fort Smith.

Art Burris, 63, of Fort Smith died Monday, March 18, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was retired from Whirlpool Corp. where he worked in the maintenance department and was of the Jehovah Witness faith.

Charles Arbukcle
MOUNTAINBURG — Charles Malcolm Arbuckle, 83, of Mountainburg died Monday, March 18, 2002, in a local hospital. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Sunflower Lodge, Scottish Rite, High 12 and Eastern Star Ivy Leaf in Wichita, Kan., a lifetime member of Mountainburg Clear Creek Lodge No. 332, past worthy patron of Clear Creek Eastern Star, the American Legion in Wichita, a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Wichita, Kan., and attended the Mountainburg Presbyterian Church and was retired aircraft inspector for Boeing Aircraft for 45 years.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday in Mountainburg Presbyterian Church with burial at Conley cemetery in Mountainburg with Masonic graveside services under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Charlotte L. Pate of Wichita, Kan. and Sally J. Arbuckle of Garfield; a son, Stephen P. Arbuckle of Phoenix; five stepdaughters, Donata Reindehl of Mountainburg, Mary Quallo of Florissant, Mo., Judy Humble of Van Buren, Maggie Butler of Fort Smith and Brenda Morgan of Alma; a sister, Mildred Morgan of Battlecreek, Mich.; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Helen Baker
Helen M. Baker, 71, of Fort Smith died Sunday, March 17, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was born Sept. 15, 1930, in Sulphur Rock. She was a member of Goddard United Methodist Church and was the widow of William F. Baker.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Goddard United Methodist Church with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by two daughters, Connie Moore and Maurine Baker, both of Fort Smith; two sons, Bill Baker of Denver and Rick Baker of Fort Smith; three sisters, Ernestine Marston of Lamar, Colo., Willie Smith of San Jose, Calif., and Virginia La Fever of Vero Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was a graduate of Magazine High School and attended the College of the Ozarks, a member of Tri T Society, a 50-year member of Clarksville Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 172, charter member of Clarksville Supper Club and the Johnson County Senior Democrats. She was the widow of James Randolph Ford.

KINTA — Geneva J. Spessard, 82, of Kinta died Monday, March 18, 2002, in Stigler. She was a 1937 graduate of Charleston High School and owned and operated a beauty shop for more than 25 years.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday in First Assembly of god in Stigler with burial at Sans Boise cemetery in Kinta under the direction of King & Shearwood Funeral Home of Stigler.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandy King of Kinta and Geannie A. Jackson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a son, Ronald M. Spessard of Martinez, Calif.; a sister, Nita Arnold of Charleston; six grandchildren, Shay, Dori, Matt and Pam Spessard, Michelle Eaton and Jeff King and four great-grandchildren.
